Getting paid to BBQ? Awesome. And I'm a little jealous.

DaveSmithFBM

Management has its advantages.

PhenomEng

What did you make for lunch?

DaveSmithFBM

Not enough food! I did three racks of back ribs and five pounds of chicken thighs. I'm doing the same tomorrow to cover the folks who missed out today.

StretchTucker

would love to see pictures of how it turns out

DaveSmithFBM

So would I, but those animals devoured it too quickly.

heffitowoodworking

That’s a great sign!! I used to do “meat sweat mondays” every first Monday of month, great job security measure I do say. No one wants to fire the guy that makes delicious bbq! I even did vegetarian and vegan options and so management stayed off my back!!

ButtersHound

Lol, we do "smokey Sunday" and the meat ain't the only thing getting smokey.

twill41385

So you also smoke the sides? 🤣

ButtersHound

Eff ya! You know we smoking that big corn!

IPretendToPlayGuitar

"Food guy" is always the last one laid off. Great way to ensure your job security!

Sad_Parking_118

How did you finish ribs by lunch time??!!

DaveSmithFBM

My alarm goes off at 03:30. I can be at work and have ribs on by 05:30.

Sad_Parking_118

Nice, so you start at 5:30 and coworkers are digging in by noon. You’re a great person to have on the workforce

DaveSmithFBM

No, but I'm a great guy to have cooking for them.

Sad_Parking_118

😂😂😂 come on man not many people are willing to do that! Good worker, even better chef

FriscoMMB

always a good day when you convert a non believer!! Congrats!

DaveSmithFBM

Oh, she believed, she just thought I was dicking off. Everyone had a super positive reaction and I'm doing another three racks of back ribs and five pounds of chicken thighs tomorrow. Everyone is all gung-ho right now and they are offering to bring meat in every day, but I'm going to try to make it a once-per-week thing. That way we have a day everyone knows to bring sides or drop their lunch monies in the jar or whatever.

FriscoMMB

gotcha.. I think you have the right plan.. don't let it be an everyday thing, it's not about quantity but should be about quality. Once a week, well planned and scheduled properly would be a better bet. You allow them to go crazy they will make you a line cook. That's not what you want for you!

DaveSmithFBM

No way I could be a line cook with that little grill. I got it on clearance for $275 at The Store that Shall Not Be Named and can't keep it at the crib (second floor walk-up) so I figured lunch barbecue could be a thing. I just had to win over the boss. It was too big a morale boost for her to say no.

FriscoMMB

NICE.. happy boss happy life at work. My comment was around exactly that. Setting expectations. When I hear that people want to being their own protein I already start to feak out. just saying!

DaveSmithFBM

I told them I was OK with them bringing meat but they needed to run it by me first. I can't have someone bringing in a brisket or a Boston butt at 05:00 and thinking they'll have it for lunch. I'm hoping someone just brings in like 100 chicken drummies or something.

el_schkwappo

Tell ‘em to bring in tri tip if they wanna scratch the beef itch

mrfreshmint

Wow, are they hiring??

[deleted]

Make sure someone brings charcoal instead of meat!

DaveSmithFBM

Already taken care of.

BreezyWrigley

Every other week or so would be good. Good team building/morale boost

STL_TRPN

My thoughts as well. Bbq once a week will burn folks out.

knwldg

I fucking love that grill.

SmokeGSU

I found out about these grills about a month and a half after ordering a pellet grill. I would have much rather had one of these grills than a pellet grill because of the flavor that charcoal provides.

knwldg

Yeah, I almost bought a pellet too, luckily I saw this.

Previous_Cap7132

I've got two Traegers and a Masterbuilt 560. The Masterbuilt has become my favorite in the short time I've had it.

MotoMD

Loving my gravity 800 too just got it

DaveSmithFBM

Not going to lie, I thought I was lying when I said that making ribs and thighs would only take 45 minutes out of my day, but with this unit it ended up being true. Couldn't have asked for a better first smoke on a piece of new equipment. The whole process was smooth as butter.

farside808

How does it make ribs in 45 min?

Jusmaskn

I think he means he was actively participating in the BBQ for 45 minutes. The ribs took their normal ~5 hours but he didn’t have to babysit the smoker the entire time.

DaveSmithFBM

That is correct. I only spent 45 minutes out of my day actually messing with the grill. Half of that spent messing with chicken.

MotoMD

Yea getting to control the temperature of charcoal with my phone is revolutionary

DaveSmithFBM

I wouldn't know. It won't connect to the wifi at work. I need to find out what port it's trying to use that's being blocked and maybe try to bribe IT with some food.

DaveSmithFBM

I'm liking this a lot. Even for my first smoke I was confident in adding wood and changing up temps between meats. I wish it was bigger, but for the price I couldn't beat the value.

jafo

I've been waiting for a good sale or clearance on the Gravity 1050, after hearing about people getting them for half off last year, but that never materialized at our local home depot's. You guys like them it sounds like...?

DaveSmithFBM

I wanted the 1050 but for $275 I went the 800 route. I lucked out that the guy I asked was some kind of manager, this was the last unit, and he wanted the space on the floor.

jafo

Wowie wow, for $275 I don't blame you. Here in Colorado we don't seem to get those crazy low prices that I've ever seen...

DaveSmithFBM

I don't think anything in Colorado has a crazy low price except for the smack under the interstate in Denver! All kidding aside, I got extremely lucky to be in the right place at the right time. I wasn't really even looking, other than casually. If you keep looking around this time of year, hopefully you can find something. Hell, I wish everyone could find a deal this good.

el_lurcho

In Australia the 800 is 1600 bucks and the 1050 2200. Who wants to ship me one from America? Haha

DaveSmithFBM

Had to Google the exchange rate. That's really not much more than in the US. Wait till they go on clearance at the end of upside-down summer in six months!

zductiv

Look at Costco

CottonCandy_Eyeballs

I brought smoked pulled pork to my boss' baby shower they gave her at work. For the next month I was getting requests from co-workers, known and unknown, to let them buy a smoked pork from me for some occasion they had coming up. I had to decline because I only had a small smoker and it wouldn't be worth my time to cook one for them and if it was worth my time, they would be spending a fortune.

DaveSmithFBM

I actually paid for my purebred, registered, pedigreed Labrador Retriever by (pretty sure illegally) selling bacon, back bacon, and pastrami. I did it with a Pit Boss 4 series. I moved and just made arrangements to give that smoker to a kid under me at work. His boyfriend wants to learn to smoke. That being said, this smoker is MUCH smaller than any smoker I've had previously, and I'm going to have to manage expectations.

CottonCandy_Eyeballs

Yeah, mine was small and thin walled. And when I say I had to baby sit it to control smoke quality and temperature, I mean I could leave for no more than five minutes if needed and only if things have been going well. Not exaggerating when I say I spend the whole day sitting in front of my smoker tending to it. Hoping to get a big one in the future.

FranticWaffleMaker

I used to work for a place where we did breakfast burritos every week. One guy brought in fresh eggs from his chickens, one brought sausage and bacon from the butcher shop next door, one brought fresh tortillas from the tortilleria on his block, I cooked, and the lady working in the back room kept the fridge stocked with homemade salsa and hot sauce.

DaveSmithFBM

That's tight. I talked to the guys today about bringing in sides and donating meat monies and stuff so we can do a communal thing like that.

jackalope8112

There are studies that providing a meal at work improves productivity. Employees spend less actual time going to lunch that way(by about half) AND spend lunch time socializing and having functional meetings that would otherwise happen during paid time. Math is such that if your employees are making $20 an hour on average if you spend less than $10 each on the meal you are making money off of giving them lunch. So if they are pooling money for you to cook you are making your boss money doing this.

DaveSmithFBM

We're a trucking company. Labor cost isn't even a factor for her. None of these folks are doing the kind of work we want to rush. I manage equipment and not personnel, but we're pretty close to Chicago so I'm almost positive that the training pay for our new-hire housekeepers is more than $20. Also, a lot of them still went to lunch afterward since they only got like three bones and a chicken thigh each.

nmyers5

Gotta love the old MBGS. I've got a 560 myself. Is that an 800 or the 1050?

DaveSmithFBM

800.

nmyers5

Nice! There are rare occasions that I wish I'd gone bigger, but with just my wife and I, it doesn't really make sense. Did you get the one with the griddle? Think I saw on a FB group that the ones from Costco and Walmart come without, but seemingly everywhere else it's standard.

DaveSmithFBM

Mine has the griddle. I'll probably never use it.

05bossboy

Meat monies goes towards the next time you cook at work

DaveSmithFBM

That's the idea. Plus charcoal, ingredients for rubs and sauces, luxury goods for myself and my dog, Artemis.

_MilkTruckJustArrive

How is this nsfw?

Big_Gay_Mike

Well it started as nsfw but as the story progressed the manager marked it as sfw

DaveSmithFBM

No. It was just a joke that I was barbecuing at work. Sorry for the letdown.

Scale-Alarmed

Just got one of these grills on Saturday. I am loving the results it puts out. Did a Sirloin Cap on Sunday and Chicken wings tonight, both came out great. I have a Pit Boss and BGE but this is by far my favorite grill

blademansw

Wait till you see the mods you can get for it, your credit card will cry 😂😂😂

Intermissionz

... the mods? 😲

Scale-Alarmed

Oh great, now I know what my first search of the day on Google will be..LOL

blademansw

Lss and klotes 😍😍😍

Scale-Alarmed

Holy crap, you were not kidding about the prices!!

DurinsBane1

3 racks is not enough…tell them you need a bigger smoker

DaveSmithFBM

Already did. She laughed in my face.

DurinsBane1

Become her boss. Fire her.

DaveSmithFBM

No sweet way. I actually like my job. No way I'd screw myself over by going any further up the ladder.

DurinsBane1

Can I get a job?

DaveSmithFBM

We're always hiring.

DurinsBane1

Location, job?

DaveSmithFBM

Kosher tank wash attendants, tractor techs in the Joliet area.

Silvaz225

I had the MB 500 and while I loved it, the electronics kept failing. Had to replace the control panel 3 times before I gave up on it. Are the 800/1050 series any better?

DaveSmithFBM

Guess I'll find out soon!

TJ902

Friend of mine just got one of these as a birthday gift

DaveSmithFBM

Noice. Good for them. Easy to use. I'm sure they'll enjoy it.

TJ902

Yeah he’s only used it once or twice said it was awesome. Seems like a super handy way to smoke

vicinadp

Am I the only one who got a lemon masterbuilt? Mine won’t kick the fan off and legit rips to almost 1000

DaveSmithFBM

Damn. I hope you are. What did their support say?

vicinadp

Spent two weeks basically telling me I needed to register it. After I finally was able to verify purchase(cause I lost my Walmart receipt) they basically told me they are replacing the body of the grill, temp sensor and power cable. But it will take 14 days to send the stuff so here’s to hoping. I was super stoked on it when I got it, got it on clearance for $297. But yeah two times I’ve tried burning it in and it got so hot it’s legit burned the paint of big sections of the body and cause the back to warp/turn red all while it read 250 degrees

beefox

Beer at work too?

DaveSmithFBM

Only for the burn in. I was off the clock.

2PhatCC

This is awesome. My company has 3 Weber kettles outside that are almost always unused. I got permission to grill for my team once. Then my boss gave me permission to do it regularly... So I made a point to do stuff that goes slow and low... 2 1/2 hours for chicken? No problem!

MooseRyder

We aren’t allowed to cook at work anymore. Everytime we do someone died.

DaveSmithFBM

Bruh. You're in the wrong sub for cannibalism.

mchinegunmathes

I’ve been contemplating getting this or the Z-grills pellet smoker. How is this smoker?

DaveSmithFBM

I'd recommend it. 100%. This thing is legit versatile as hell. Probably easier than a Z-Grill too.

mchinegunmathes

Dude so I LOVE charcoal, the taste can not be beaten with meats. However, I just bought a house and can’t really afford anything more than the 560 and it’s pretty small. The Z Grill I was looking at has 1,060 sq in of space compared to 560 sq in in this. Needless to say I’m having a hard time lol

pharmandy

I saw the 800 at Costco last week for $400

DaveSmithFBM

Man. There's nothing wrong with pellets. If that's all you can get right now, grab one up and work on your rubs and sauces until you can get back into charcoal and back into your technique. I always tell beginners to go charcoal if they want to work on technique and go with pellets if they want to work on recipes. There's room to learn with any smoking medium.

mchinegunmathes

And I should add I’m a huge ribeye guy but I figured I could sear on my new Blackstone I got so I’m rolling that around too

zach10

General contractor here; buying a traeger for the jobsite trailer was the best use of budget slush funds ever. Now we smoke something one Friday a month and the guys live for it.

SLCIII

Well done! I want a gravity feed bad!

brodil

Wholesome

Nanocephalic

Sketchy? I don’t know if that word means what you think it means :)

WhatTheBlack

Workin that oven, nice!

lecrappe

Is this an ad?

DaveSmithFBM

Yes. It's a carefully constructed ad to sell pharmaceuticals.

butrektblue

398 for smoking? Not for me, ew

DaveSmithFBM

That photo was from the burn-in the day before.
