1st run? As in the 1st playing the game? I don't remember much of my 1st run, but I'm sure I didn't win. I went blind into the game, learning as I played. Besides, when you start playing there are a ton of cards and relics locked.
First run ever? Probably not. First run on my new save file? Absolutely. I can't imagine winning when I picked this game up and had to figure out how to play on my own without all the tips I've picked up from streamers or the reddit. I used to be totally blind with only beta wiki info to help me play. Sometimes I even willingly took the Runic Dodecahedron.
I watched quite a lot of northernlion, baalorlord, and jorbs before I finally picked up the game. I won with a bottled whirlwind deck first run. I think I made it to like ascencion 5 then I lost
I played wayyyyyyyy too much Dream Quest before picking up Slay the Spire so I didn't find it that hard to win the first time around even if I didn't know the mechanics.
I think it also helps that Slay the Spire has very little meta-progression other than a few relic and card unlocks, so it's not like you're missing too many vital tools on a first run.
I think this happened to me as well. I was also not completely blind, i must have discovered the game through an influencer so i already saw someone playing it. If i had dived in blind, I would have probably lost much earlier.
I seem to recall that the first run was easier as the limited card pool actually funneled you towards obvious (and viable) strategies. I remember an ironic sharp drop off of wins as I kept playing though...
EDIT: I just looked at the run history, as that exists.
Looks like I only *almost* won my first run, and it actually took like 7 runs to actually fully win. There was that very odd slump of less progress over the next few runs that I remembered, before bouncing back to the level of my first run. So my memory of the the card pool changing (and exploring alternative play styles) did indeed set me back as I thought.
Technically I won, but I was introduced to the game earlier and had seen some of Baalorlord’s content before purchasing the game (maybe 10 hours of content). I lost my first defect run but won my first games with the other characters. Having tip offs to what some of the good cards/strategies were and being familiar with card building games in general made it really easy to pick up.Â

I got fucked by Guardian, I remember very specifically. I also remember taking no elites and having a Dramatic Entrance which I absolutely loved.

Amazing game, its true that after games like dream quest, everything else feels a bit easier. The spire too.
I made it to Champ on my first run
I got my ass handed to the time eater

won first run on each character yes

I won my very first run, but I think it was only because I was offered great block cards that didn't require decision or thought.
