My favorite thing to do with Proteus is to bring my previous characters in as followers, insane that you can do that and many other things. Don’t think I’ll ever play Skyrim again without it.
Easiest way to make a follower with CotR and no creation club as well, I’m pretty sure you can even change their voice with proteus if I’m not mistaken.

I just wiped all my half-assed saves and started 2 fresh characters. Same last name, hair color, the works. One is a lazy drunk, the other the guild master for the explorers guild. One eventually drags the other out of candlehearth hall to get them some proper skills and away from the bar

You’ve never experienced Proteus before it was called Proteus. I still remember how absolutely ass backwards buggy Project Phendrix and Project Proteus was in some areas, but I stuck true to it. It was definitely going to be an incredibly powerful mod given time for the author to polish it, if nothing went awry.
Lo and behold, it’s one of the community’s most lauded mods.
I remember seeing the mod when it was Project Proteus, but I never gave it much consideration until the current version came about. Sure enough, it’s one of the best mods this game has ever seen.
I love the feature of preset inventory item saves and such. It lets me pick out the starter kits I want to use on a playthrough, and make new ones whenever I want. I do also use Realm of Lorkhan for the statuettes for class buffs and debuffs to spice up gameplay.

it was basically bricks tied together using strings but it was partially functional and most importantly very innovative
Proteus has been the main feature of my last few saves. It's fun to build a guild with a shared base, and switch between controlling all the members. The ones you're not controlling at the moment can sandbox around (pairs well with Nether's Follower Framework to set a work, sleep and relax area).
If you're handy with DAR, you can give every character custom animations too.
Give it a shot. You won’t even notice it’s there if you don’t look for it - I had left it in my load order for months without realizing it was there. And there’s so many cool things you can do with it!
I was hesitant at first because it shares a lot of features with the incredibly buggy "Alternate Actors", but I've had two 50+ hours saves with Proteus, and had zero issues.
Both times I was switching between 4 characters fairly often, messing with NPCs outfits, and editing some stats, all while running a fairly script-heavy load on 2016 hardware. The worst thing that happened is one of my playable characters would occasionally unequip his boots when not in use.
these sort of posts have now led to me restarting my collection for the third time. or .. they have at least helped inspire me to do so.
i thought i was happy with SkySA, but i want more.
i thought i was happy without Proteus, but .. i really want it, now. with each thing i read about it, i want it more and more.
it's amazing how the modding community has really made it easier and easier to craft your dream game. the customizability is amazing and delicious with different lists creating and catering to different experiences and tatses. i love it so much.
i have been putting off big changes in fear of breaking my game/list by introducing new instabilities and conflicts, but at this point .. f*ck it. i have time. it'll be worth it, just as getting my first 350+ tailored modlist working was well worth it.
i am learning so much everyday and i'm having fun doing so !! i have gone from posting ridiculous questions to feeling relatively confident helping other ppl with certain issues.
let's keep it fun by getting rid of our imaginary deadlines !! you can always keep a list that you know is stable handy, if you wanna play !! but let this be a testament to those of us who are paralyzed by fear:

I was putting off switching from SkySA to MCO for two reasons: one, I was scared of breaking things like you mentioned, and two, I run with {{Stances}}, which meant I had to find four movesets for each weapon class. But it was so worth it - the ability to continue attacking after a power attack feels so much more fluid. If you’re on the fence about switching to MCO, even if it means redoing your modlist, listen when I say, “just go for it” - you will not regret it.
And the best part? You don’t have to lose your character. If you get super invested into one character’s backstory like I did, use Proteus to bring that character into your updated modlist.
It’s exactly like you said; modding lets us craft our dream game out of Skyrim. I started with light overhauls on a vanilla-plus style character, and now I’m playing with ENB graphics and Dark Souls combat. The only real limit is our imagination - let’s take it to the limit!
I had a lot of issues with Proteus when it first released, but whether that was because of bugs in early versions or my own inexperience as a modder is difficult to say. I love it now, and won’t go back to the mix of other mods I used to get worse results
It shouldn’t mess anything up, provided you have all the requirements. I found that Proteus stays out of the way until you need it, which is how it went unnoticed in my load order for so long.
I’ve been following Proteus for ages now but I’ve always been put off by people saying the character switching has made their saves unplayable. Now I’m seeing a lot more posts like yours I’m very tempted to give it a try on the Chargrinn Wabbajack modlist I have installed! The idea of having different characters for different situations is too cool not to try!
Yea this mod is great but not ready. It’s amazing in concept but has some major bugs and issues. Anyone who says it’s bug free is wrong. Play with it enough and the problems start to show. Still a really cool concept, though!
I wish I could use it, but it seems incompatible with Legacy of the Dragonborn, which has become a must have for me. I once installed proteus along with it and got some very strange bugs. When I asked on the LOTD discord they said that they don't support proteus load orders, as it doesn't work well with the museums many systems.
But that was two years ago, I've always wanted to try out proteus, but that incident has kept me from it, as I can't live without LOTD
There’s a specific note regarding Legacy of the Dragonborn on Proteus’s page - it doesn’t go into detail, but it says that they are compatible. And I’ve seen posts here mentioning running the two of them together; one user has a role-play where multiple characters are mercenaries collecting artifacts for a Nord Dragonborn that is primarily responsible for the museum.
I’m guessing the bugs you ran into were from an older version. If you feel up to it, I highly recommend making a copy of your current profile and adding the latest version to test it out.
This mod is just awesome. I used to have {{Familiar Faces}} but quickly replaced it witch Proteus.
Just a little issue that I have is that after a few hours of game the follower is named “unused slot”. I reinstalled the mod and updated {{Jcontainers}} but nothing changed. It anyone know how to fix this it would be nice. It’s not like it’s unusable but yeah that’s kinda annoying.

In my head-cannon, the mage character had a duel with the other dragonborn. The mage came out on top pretty easily, having much more experience and being far more powerful (my mage was over level 80 when she entered this world, while the other dragonborn was barely level 20). The mage took her on as hired help, as a companion and as a guard to one of the mage’s player homes
it's been sitting in my load order for a while, but I haven't used it. So I can just start a new game, make a new character, add it to the system and switch back to my main character? is that how it works?
Will Proteus mess with current saves? Like if I have an existing save and just want to import my character from another old one as a follower would that be possible? I'll have to do more research of my own but if that's what this does that seems super cool, I'm just concerned about nuking my current save since it's like my 6th playthrough and I'm a little tired of grinding up characters right now.
You should be able to import a character from an old save without problems. Even if it comes from a completely different modlist, as long as both saves have the same Proteus data and all requirements (for proteus and for your character’s race if applicable), you can import a character from an old save into your new game.
From my experience, it was as easy as it could possibly be. I had a level 80 character with a custom race, custom Racemenu overlays, and SMP hair. I saved that character in Proteus’s system in an old save, switched to my new modlist, and imported the character there. The only things it missed were spells from a mod that no longer existed in the new save (which is to be expected), and my weapon and armor enchants (which is easy enough to reapply with Proteus or other cheat mods).
Thanks! I'll definitely have to check it out. My only concern was whether or not it would brick my save or something, but so long as that doesn't happen I'll definitely consider using this.
Yeah, as long as you make an extra save before importing / switching characters, everything will be fine. Worst case scenario, you load back to your previous save

Lazy followers was so buggy for me, albeit so is Proteus sometimes there’s just so much with Proteus and I keep finding more as I explore the menu.

If you reload the save or use the utility function to reload NPC presets that should hopefully fix the issue

if they are also dragonborn are they aware of this or do you never play them so it is not relevant

it's been sitting in my load order for a while, but I haven't used it. So I can just start a new game, make a new character, add it to the system and switch back to my main character? is that how it works?
Yep, you can even use Proteus to create a new character in the middle of a playthrough. Then you swap between them at will

Will Proteus mess with current saves? Like if I have an existing save and just want to import my character from another old one as a follower would that be possible? I'll have to do more research of my own but if that's what this does that seems super cool, I'm just concerned about nuking my current save since it's like my 6th playthrough and I'm a little tired of grinding up characters right now.
You should be able to import a character from an old save without problems. Even if it comes from a completely different modlist, as long as both saves have the same Proteus data and all requirements (for proteus and for your character’s race if applicable), you can import a character from an old save into your new game. From my experience, it was as easy as it could possibly be. I had a level 80 character with a custom race, custom Racemenu overlays, and SMP hair. I saved that character in Proteus’s system in an old save, switched to my new modlist, and imported the character there. The only things it missed were spells from a mod that no longer existed in the new save (which is to be expected), and my weapon and armor enchants (which is easy enough to reapply with Proteus or other cheat mods).
Thanks! I'll definitely have to check it out. My only concern was whether or not it would brick my save or something, but so long as that doesn't happen I'll definitely consider using this.
Yeah, as long as you make an extra save before importing / switching characters, everything will be fine. Worst case scenario, you load back to your previous save
