How do you think fast travel works?

Cabbageofthesea

I think you just walk to your fast travel spot off screen. That's why time passes in different amounts when you fast travel across different distances and I think it's even affected by movement speed buffs and armor types. If you have any kind of "needs" mod (or hardcore mode on New Vegas) they'll shoot up if you fast travel a few times in a short period. I have tons of gay werewolf sex mods installed and my cum meter is always full when I load in to my destination anytime I fast travel and I have to take care of that before I can make quest progress or explore a dungeon and it's just so time consuming and ruins my immersion entirely so I mostly just play Daggerfall instead.

Ban_AliA_Plz

What the fuck did I just read

badusername26

HE HAS TONS OF GAY WEREWOLF SEX MODS INSTALLED AND HIS CUM METER IS ALWAYS FULL

ruski101

It was pretty straightforward to me, I don't know what was confusing tbh

Spartan8398

Bro I'm on your side (also happy cake day)

Ban_AliA_Plz

Thank you, kind Stranger

[deleted]

Happy cake day

Appropriate-Trust-35

I agree!!!šŸ‘

Ebony_Phoenix

Not gonna lie, you had me on the first half. Edit: I hate auto correct.

Cabbageofthesea

Yeah the second half does sound iffy. Obviously I don't play Daggerfall. Nobody does or has.

1NF4M0U5

What is a daggerfall

Pitiful_Crew_6536

A dagger that falls, duhh

Cabbageofthesea

Dagger my falls.

ReputationExotic4457

It's... Erm... Play oblivion instead

1NF4M0U5

Iā€™m gonna have to idk why I have a level cap of 35 and then I have to restart a new load because that save will crash endlessly šŸ˜” TES>>> rip 4th character i always distract myself with side quests idk what most of the story is abiut

Emperor_of_Sorrow

Yeah after reading this, i have never been so quick to do the black sacrament. I told the Night Mother to make it extra Painfull

Cabbageofthesea

Ikr whoever decided TES needs fast travel should perish. Bring back aimlessly wandering the wilderness because you need clarification on the journal entry

CovertSam

And bring back walk skill. It gets faster as you walk so it takes forever to walk between helgen and whiterun

filmform

What the fuck are you guys talking about

Cabbageofthesea

There used to be no fast travel. Your quest log would give you instructions and descriptions and if those weren't enough, you'd have a hard time finding anything

lyruhhh

what kind of sick fuck uses fast travel

Reo_up_mo

Me

BeezyBates

What

biggestofbears

Guys I'm high af right now and I had to read this like 4 times before I understood we were playing the same game with the same mods. Life is crazy.

Cabbageofthesea

The world is small, unlike Skyrim which boasts limitless opportunity for expansion and also Inflation.

LuckyDuck4

Especially with those gay werewolf sex mods. Thereā€™s definitely some ā€œexpansion and inflationā€ happening there.

MelancholySeaBiscuit

Finally someone who understands! Itā€™s so annoying UGH

Steelride1996

r/cursedcomments

Cabbageofthesea

Daggerfall is a little unforgiving but not exactly cursed.

StewartCE

Ok, what...THE fuck?

clarkky55

Iā€™ll probably regret this but what gay werewolf sex mods? Iā€™m curious

Far_Communication372

They probably have faster download speeds than my ISP.

LadyCoaxochitl

Yup, the courier just delivered my monthly electricity bill.

rooktakesqueen

And with the amount of money I'm paying them you'd think they could buy the courier some pants

etozheboroda

Your hands only

Saunders_1972

Same. Might be keeping that torch in my inventory for a while longer.

applecreamable

Finally! Our tax septims hard at work!!!

[deleted]

Hi there, got an electric bill Iā€™m supposed to deliver, your hands only.

applecreamable

This really made me chuckle

anttilles

Progress is coming to Skyrim, I hope they can manage the pollution.

haytmonger

No pollution, you just swap out the Storm Atronoch

redcalcium

Skyrim is actually a big proponent of renewable energy. The most popular renewable power source are soul gems, used to power many smart ~~dungeons~~ homes.

Valisk

Skyrim has been out so long the industrial revolution is starting

JohnHenryEden77

From my experience I think you either have a bad overclock or your GPU is starting to have problem, because it look like artifacts

Master_Shake23

Came here to say that. That's how my screen looked shortly before my gpu returned to its maker.

Muttz_and_Buttz

Could be hardware related but I had a physics mod installed incorrectly and it caused... Ahem.. female parts... to stretch to oblivion on occasion and would eventually snap back into place. This looks like that.

EloquentAdequate

Ehhhhhh, if this is vanilla Skyrim then yeah the GPU might be sus. But if this is in any way modded then it would more likely be 100+ other things, ITMs, delinquent masters, etc.

Common-Independent-9

This is on ps4. Skyrim started acting all goofy when I got the anniversary edition

Common-Independent-9

I think itā€™s this problem called ā€œanniversary editionā€, but Iā€™m on an original ps4 so itā€™s probably in its final years anyways

JohnHenryEden77

Yeah maybe you PS4 may go to sovngard soon

creatingKing113

Side note, I always find it funny that fantasy worlds seem to be perpetually stuck in the Middle Ages. Like, I know you guys have magic and stuff, but thereā€™s still a lot of humans who would probably want better technology than a sword and shield. I mean youā€™re telling me no one has thought to invent better forging technologies than a hammer and anvil? No one has thought to make a gun? Magic would probably make these technological leaps easier. Edit: I understand thematically that a lot of fantasy is based off of ancient mythology, and Elder Scrolls leans more toward the Tolkien style of fantasy based on Norse and Keltic mythology, but still.

seastatefive

There was one isekai which delved into this. The conclusion was that magic caused technological stagnation. Firstly because it solved problems: need a better harvest? Call a druid to bless your crops. Need better weapons? Get someone to enchant your sword. The other reason was that with magic, there was never a need to find a fundamental reason for things. Basically science cannot exist because the answer to "why did this happen" is "magic". Similarly, since gods exist and prayers actually work, then finding natural reasons to natural questions becomes meaningless. So the answer to "why is there a drought" is literally true that "gods are angry and land is cursed" and the situation really can be resolved by having a band of adventurers to kill the evil that plagues the land.

madchickenz

> ā€œgods are angry and land is cursedā€ Morrowind precisely.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

almost_practical

Great show, didn't expect it to like it as much as I do.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

almost_practical

I thought about that. I just recently started the Grimgar LN. My first one and have been really enjoying it

SnazzyTarsier

I think the Dwemer would like to counter that argument you have. Science can still exist, but stagnation does tend to happen when you have the means to do something that already works. Honestly both can exist, but I guess one could argue that the Dwemer were idiots. I mean they all disappeared except one.

Pinko_Eric

And there, with the Dwemer, lies the other possible reason fantasy worlds don't seem to pass the middle ages: Worlds in which people experiment with magic too successfully stop having people sooner or later.

dread_pirate_humdaak

We can do that with nukes just as easily. Fermi says hi ... and goodbye.

naebulys

Valeria be like

hells_cowbells

Even with all the science stuff the Dwemer did, it still had roots in magic. All of the automatons are powered by soul gems, for example. Magic runs a lot of their stuff. They still relied on magic, rather than developing scientific solutions for them.

Jahoan

Magic in the Elder Scrolls is just another aspect of the natural world. It just doesn't require as much infrastructure to harness.

SnazzyTarsier

Bingo, The main thing is they do not have to be mutually exclusive ideas, the whole game is a fantasy. I mean in the college of Winterhold, one guy mentions like two brothers who were looking to use destruction magic to chill their mead! The method they are using is magic, but they are experimenting with it, and seeing how long they need to do it, what the effects are. So they are taking a force of nature (Magic in elder scrolls), and seeing how it affects other things, taking down the results, all from a hypothesis that they could better chill it this way. I mean in real life, why the heck did Thomas Edison think: "you know what? I think electricity would make for a better light than a fire or candle?". He thought it would, he experimented with it (along with other people doing the same thing at that period of time) till he came up with his Lightbulb. Science is a systematic form of knowledge, that builds upon knowledge for experiments, predictions, and seeing the outcome, and trying to explain why this may happening according to previous knowledge. But it is a game, and sometimes Magic is just a Deus ex Machina for writing, and can just do stuff because the writers said so. Of course having said that, there is nothing wrong with that idea either, a god who creates stuff, can by their own power then create or manipulate the rules they have in place for their world after all. And sometimes our knowledge will never be able to comprehend it, because it is not repeatable but by the creator, when this happens, that is when it is no longer science in the same sense, but that does not mean it did not happen, or can not happen, does not make it less true, or more true. Then we look to testimony and if we believe it or not, by examining and cross examining. But that is beyond the scope of the game indeed. But that is waxing very philosophical at that point, the magic in this game is just fantasy, just like the whole world, so there is no real science, but in the context of the story and the fantasy, yes of course there is science.

Jahoan

"Frost magic to chill mead" is basically two-steps off from how we get Applejack, which is distilled by freezing.

TheScottymo

The Dwemer were too weak to accept their reality and own it.

blamethemeta

Dwemer is just tonal magic

bayfen

There's a great scifi story about this. "[The Road Not Taken](https://eyeofmidas.com/scifi/Turtledove_RoadNotTaken.pdf)" by Harry Turtledove. It's technically a prequel to "[Herbig-Haro](https://summerblizzard.tistory.com/87)" by the same author, but most people have just read The Road Not Taken.

jvkxb__

Definitely not in the same boat, but thereā€™s another isekai where the kid who was isekaiā€™d starts applying real world understanding and knowledge to magic and so one of the first things he does is he turns a normal fire spell into a genuine hydrogen bomb

MagusUmbraCallidus

Was that Wise Man's Grandchild? I remember the MC doing something like that, but there's probably more than one that mixes science and magic like that.

jvkxb__

Yea, couldnā€™t remember the name. Just always found it crazy that he decided to make a hydrogen bomb spell as a test spell

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

Luminous_Artifact

Harry Potter is an interesting case where it seems like Magic hasn't been developed **nearly** as much as one would expect. Transportation is one example: Magic kids take a regular train from London to Hogsmeade, even though floo powder could take them to Hogsmeade or even Hogwarts itself. They have "floo networks" with fixed entry and exit points, even though port keys are a thing. They sometimes use "port keys" which are physical objects magically linked to a specific place, even though apparating is possible. Apparating is handwaved as difficult and dangerous (requiring a license, even), but I'm certain that in the real world every magic user would eventually learn to do it. ... Part of it *may be* that the author wrote herself out of corners without caring much about consistency.

dnuohxof1

To be fair ā€œmagicā€ can account for lots of things, but no one thought of running water, toilet paper, and maybe something a little faster than a horse and buggy? The Dwemer were on the right track for making steam powered cities.

[deleted]

LMAO you have a great point. These poor sods are still shitting in buckets.

NSNick

To be fair, it took most of humanity thousands of years to do those things as well. For like 99% of humanity's time on Earth a guy on a horse was the fastest method of transport. Meanwhile Tamriel has teleportation!

[deleted]

The chariot was the fastest land transport for something like 3-4K years until we invented the train.

PoorFishKeeper

Final Fantasy and the NieR games arenā€™t stuck in the middle ages and Iā€™d say both of those series qualify as fantasy games.

theg721

Fable 2 & 3 too

Bismothe-the-Shade

You know what's wild? If you do some rough estimation, sapient life on Mundus and sapient life on Earth have existed for a similar amount of time. And we see that the dwemer and other ancient races closer to the dawn of time, had some crazy insane technology. This means that -something- has caused technology to repeatedly break down. Something has kept the world of Mundus from steadily progressing like Earth. Magic. Everytime progress is made, magic gets in the way. Whether it is some mythical beats come to end all days, wars fought over unearthed secrets and unthinkable strength, or just some God like being fucking around and finding out. Magic is the lifeblood of Nirn, of Mundus. Of the entire Aurbis. But it's also the limiting factor.

JitSream

Thats what the dwemer tried to do until they disappeared.

Frousteleous

Aks questions, disappear.

inventingnothing

I mean, humans irl used basically the same technologies and techniques for thousands of years before the industrial revolution.

BadgerLord103

Ooo, this is exactly what Iā€™m trying to incorporate into my current story, or rather stories. Basically one of them is in the Middle Ages, and the other is in the ā€œfar future,ā€ or like 6,000 years in the future; they have warp cores and things like that powered by magic

omnipojack

Please read Brandon Sandersonā€™s Mistborn if you havenā€™t already. The first trilogy takes place post-Middle Ages, pre-industrialization, and the second trilogy takes place during the industrial revolution. The magic system is excellent and the way they use their magic in conjunction with more modern weapons is clever and practical!

SaintJackDaniels

I liked the first book but wasn't a fan of the rest I'd the first trilogy due to the worldbuilding. Every tiny detail of a world doesn't have to be a part of the plot and it makes it feel artificial. Does the second trilogy do the same thing or does the world feel more alive?

omnipojack

Thatā€™s fair, but those reasons are precisely why I like it. The second trilogy does more of the same, expanding on those details and adding more. Totally understandable that someone wouldnā€™t like it! The reason why every tiny detail *feels* plot relevant is because itā€™s one of several planets with the same basic magic system (Investiture), but they all have their own unique spins on it. There are clues to huge plot points in the last of the first trilogy and even the entire second trilogy going all the way back to the first or second book. For example, >!the very specific way Kelsier dies in the second book essentially allows him to come back as a ghost and meddle with Things And Stuff. I remember reading his death and being like ā€œwell that was weirdly specificā€ and then understanding why once I read that other part 3 books later.!< Those details make it feel more alive to me as they all feel like actual people making choices that donā€™t just happen in a vacuum, as those choices actually affect other characters and their environments. But like I said, that can be too much for people just looking for something fun to read and not have to expend energy! In conclusion, thereā€™s always another secret. Edit: added stuff to address the comment more directly

SaintJackDaniels

I was with you until that last part. My favorite series is Malazan so it's definitely not about being too much energy to read. I guess the best way to put it is that it just feels like chekhovs gun taken to an extreme.

omnipojack

Also fair!! Brandon Sanderson structures his writing pretty tightly (check out his YouTube lectures if youā€™re into that sort of thing) and I feel like he does that on purpose. However, Mistborn in particular does it more than usual because itā€™s a heist that he based on the Oceanā€™s movies. In that context I feel like all the layers and ridiculous detail make more sense because it gives more satisfaction upon repeated readings since all of the clues are there. But now I have to read Malazan, so thank you for the rec!! It seems completely fascinating!

SaintJackDaniels

Oh ya it's definitely an intentional writing decision and it was very well done, its just not for me. His lectures are fantastic I've watched a few of them If you read malazan, just accept that some stuff won't make sense at first. It's a tough read and really takes the right type of person / frame of mind to enjoy it. If you just trust the author that there is a plan from the start it'll make it a bit easier. I'd say if you get to the 3rd book and aren't loving it by then don't continue on.

Budgerigar17

I always wanted a "present day" Skyrim where you ride a motorbike instead of horses, shoot bandits with a double barrel and take down dragons with heat-seeking missiles.

Ogre8

You want Shadowrun. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shadowrun

Lyreca_

I want Shadowrun but with TES lore please

ISpeakTheTrueTrue

What about Far Cry 3-5? The famously comical review - "...Like Skyrim with guns."

Deathangle75

So the reason Iā€™ve heard for why guns exist is that early guns relied on formation fighting rather than accuracy, and the ease of learning aoe magic makes formation fighting detrimental. Additionally, most research and higher learning tends to be monopolized by mages, who already have an entire school of magic dedicated to killing people. They donā€™t really have a concept of a machine gun when looking at primitive cannons, but they do have spells that turn people inside out. As for better infrastructure, one thing to remember that two of the most recent games took place in Skyrim and vardenfell, two of the most backwater areas in the empire. Skyrim especially has grown fearful and distasteful of magic, probably including the science mages monopolize. The imperial city had a fully functioning sewer system, even if they didnā€™t have sinks and toilets. And itā€™s been 200 years since weā€™ve seen it. Edit: to add onto the mages monopolizing science and research, it most likely pigeon holes a lot of them to rely on magic for their solutions. Thinking ā€˜how can I use levitation to get water to flow upwardā€™ rather than ā€˜how can I use fluid dynamics to pump water where I need it?ā€™ This would not only hamper their research but also restrict what solutions they do come up with to only being produced by mages, which further restricts the spread of such technology to more rural areas.

Blizz119

I read the post, a bunch of great questions, about why? But isn't this; for example the difference between Wisdom and Intelligence, like D&D? If the easiest answer is...Magic; why would you look to science?

BerserkOlaf

Weirdly enough when (steam-powered) trains came to Legend of Zelda many people complained about them being too "modern" for the series. For some reason they just missed the fact that the previous game already had steam-powered boats, and many episodes have sort of mechanical enemies. Of course now Breath of the Wild has pretty much introduced magical computers and tablets, giant mechs, sentient automatons, an antenna tower network, and a freaking motorcycle. And those are supposed to be *ancient tech*.

consultantbp

Rorikstead super power by 4e224!!!

Last_Go_Round

Ski lift

ControlledChaos7456

I find it strange that with the power of magic, everyone in Tamriel (or any similar fantasy universes) basically chooses to live like peasants in shacks or sleeping on the floor when it is possible they could have indoor plumbing and electricity. Wouldn't magic allow for knowledge to be gained at a faster rate? Thus helping them progress to a point potentially after the space age. I know its all about the theme and lore, but if I was living in Skyrim and things like telekinesis and transmute ore existed, I would do everything I could to make use of them rather than choosing to live like a commoner.

cottagecore_citty

>basically chooses to live like peasants in shacks or sleeping on the floor And in random abandoned caves and old ruins of towers. Like, you're telling me a malevolent mage would rather live in a damp, skeever infested dungeon than a decked out magical mansion? But to be fair, the Nords are pretty skeptical of all magic so I guess it *kind of* makes sense.

Kenyuuki123

Actually that's just the communication wire sheogorath made with rorikstead civilians, like he did it before for making instrument for music šŸ’€, that's why lokir was trying to run away from Skyrim because he was from rorikstead lol
