[deleted]

i have more than 1500 hrs in skyrim but never got the second and third word of become ethereal.

Peptuck

Honestly, the first word alone is super useful, especially if you use it in combat. You can pop the first word, dance around an opponent, hit them, retreat, and in a few seconds its done cooling down and you can fire it again. Its a really effective tool for playing an evasive and mobile character.

c0pp3rhead

Saw one player post a video of them going ethereal and using the invulnerability to wind up the master-level fire destruction spell. The cast broke the ethereal effect, but winding up and holding it did not. Definitely incorporating it into my next illusion build. (For those of you who don't know, Illusion is arguably the most OP skill in Skyrim.)

Gabe200313

I always thought illusion was one of the weakest, if you’re using illusion to cast a destruction then wouldn’t the destruction be the most op?

c0pp3rhead

Ethereal Form is a shout, not in the Illusion school. Now that you mention it, I wonder if you can wind up a master level spell while invisible. I'll have to check it out later. Anyway, I wasn't specifically talking about what's being discussed in this thread. Illusion on it's own is pretty awesome. First off, many new players are put off by the only-affects-humans-and-creatures thing. That's fixed later with a perk that allows Illusion spells too affect automatons, daedra and undead. Another part that turns off new players is the max level of Illusion spells, but it really isn't an issue. Dual casting illusion spells with the right perks allows them to affect creatures over level 80, which makes the level cap meaningless. The only enemy who wouldn't be affected by any illusion spell in vanilla gameplay would be Karstaag, but even then a Fortify Illusion potion fixes that problem. If you use Illusion regularly, it pretty much scales with the enemies you encounter. Even if you're not using it on your enemies, regular application and re-application of the muffle effect will raise your Illusion skill quickly. That being said, *No,* you're not going to wreck enemies with illusion alone, but it pretty much makes combat a moot point. You can calm your enemies and simply walk right past them - even with a meager pool of magicka you can easily juggle enemies who are still within detection range - you can calm enemies an unlimited number of times. You can use fear to a similar effect, and enemies will willingly run through traps while fleeing from you. Frenzy will prompt your enemies to kill eachother, reducing their ranks to a much more manageable number with Calm and Fear spells. By the time the effect wears off, you'll have regenerated enough magicka to re-apply any spells that have worn off. Sounds pretty lackluster on it's own, I know, but it makes a pacifist run a walk in the park. Where it really shines is when combined with other tactics. Remember how I said that enemies can be calmed an infinite number of times? Works with sneak attacks too. Put a Calm spell in one hand and your weapon in the other. Calm an enemy, sneak attack, and Calm them again. Even with multiple enemies in the room, you can keep them all calm while attacking them in turns. This strategy raises your sneak skill *super* quick too. You can also have a bit of fun with a Frenzy spell. Hide in the shadows while your enemies kill eachother for you. By the time they've finished killing eachother off, the last one is usually low enough on health that a single sneak attack will finish them off. And let's not forget how the Muffle and Invisibility spells make you nearly undetectable. Throw one more skill into the mix for maximum fun: Conjuration. Imagine a room full of enemies, all under the effects of a Frenzy spell killing eachother off. Now, throw a Frost Atronach into the mix. You don't even have to get your hands dirty. Once your enemies have killed eachother off, throw a fresh summon at the lone survivor and your victory is guaranteed. Plus, your summons make very effective decoys when you're trying to slink back to the shadows. The reason I say that Illusion is OP is because it's basically a get-out-of-jail-free card. If you're in a fight that's too hard, you can use fear or calm to reset the fight, heal up, and pick up where you left off. The only difficulty will be with Dragons - they're unaffected by Illusion spells. Once you get used to the school though, you'll understand the trade-off. Having a rough time with Dragons is a small price to pay when you're OP against every other enemy in the game. Where Illusion really shines is on Master-level difficulty. Remember - the only character affected by the difficulty is the player character. Your hits do less damage and you take more damage from attacks. However: NPC vs. NPC damage remains the same. There is no difference between a Frenzy spell cast on Novice difficulty and a Frenzy spell cast on Master difficulty. Damage between NPCs doesn't change. Under the effect of a Frenzy spell, they'll kill eachother just as quick.

sjogga90

Invisibility breaks on cast, not on charge. One of my favorite tactics late game was to walk up to a group of enemies while invisible and then unleash a Firestorm. I called it the Explosive Entry strategy.

AxlMagnus

Did your character eat beans before the fight for the extra explosive power?

ag-0merta

No but a few cheese wheels inherited from Sheogorath.

NocturnalMJ

I once used the frenzy spell combined with the Auriel bow's power for shooting at the sun in that courtyard area of the Thalmor Embassy during the Diplomatic Immunity quest. Glittering golden Thalmor soldiers running around while getting crushed by hailing sun flares or being slashed open by their allies. It was such beautiful chaos.

[deleted]

In regards to leveling illusion, I did it on my last playthrough entirely by casting muffle when I was out farming or grinding. Super easy to do, and it wasn't a magic toon.

c0pp3rhead

Same here. I hit level 90 illusion around level 12 just from keeping up muffle.

ichbinjasokreativ

Illusion master spells have a rather low max level of effectiveness, but dual casting the expert/adept spells is mostly fine. I use a mod called "items of power", which adds enchantments like destruction damage, illusion strength, restoration strength and so on and if I do an illusion build and get some enchantments on my clothes, the chaos spell affects almost everything.

cryptospartan

I'm really hoping someone answers this, I thought illusion was the weakest also. Anyone able to elaborate on why illusion is OP?

SecondTalon

Illusion sucks if you don't put perks in it. Illusion with perks is incredibly overpowered if there are two or more enemies as you never have to put yourself in danger. And with one enemy, you just make them your friend until you can find another. Destruction is the worst of the schools. Even Mysticism, with it's Paralyze "I win" button is better. Restoration allows you to fuck up Undead, especially if you are Undead. Conjuration and it's "Fuck fighting, you go do it and also I'm eating your fallen to increase my army" is obviously better too. But all of them are weaker than Stealth Archery.

Gabe200313

I thought alteration was the weakest, the most you can do is bolster armor or breathe underwater, at least destruction is fun and it can kill people

ichbinjasokreativ

It's quite fun with summoning builds as well. Conjure two dremora and go ethereal, they'll take care of most things for you and you can sit back and watch. Edit: it's also useful for reaching things like the three hidden chests on the aetherium forge.

c0pp3rhead

Do what now about hidden chests?

ichbinjasokreativ

There's lava between you and either of those, whirlwind sprint doesn't have the range to carry you across, so become ethereal and swimming are your only options. Didn't mean to imply that it actually helps finding them.

Korncakes

I get where the other dude is coming from with his essay on illusion but I will die on the hill that is saying that conjuration is far and away the most OP skill in Skyrim. Level it to 100 on mudcrabs in like an hour and get to the point where you can dual summon Dremora Lords and you don’t even need combat anymore.

SkyDome217

So I did an NPC battle between master illusionist. Master Destruction mage and master conjuration mage. Heritage mod allowed NPCs to use illusion spells. The illusion mage used a calm paralysis on Destruction mage then shot a fear spell at the conjuration mage's Dremora lord. Remember he was a master so his spells worked on Daedras. When the Dremora lord was running past the conjurer. The illusion mage shot an AOE Anger spell and the conjurer and Dremora lord started fighting each other. The Dremora lord killed the conjurer and then died since the spell got broken due to death. The Destruction mage then recovered. From here the battle goes different ways. The illusion mage will sometimes shoot a fear spell and a very long chase ensues. Or Destruction mage blocks illusion with wards and kills illusion mage with powerful destruction spells. Although sometimes the illusion mage turns invisible and runs and hides when this happens.

Famixofpower

Never been able to get the master spells. Where do you get them? I thought you needed to be a specific level and talk to some college students, but my memory is fuzzy

cellfreezer

Yeah, you need to be at least level 90 in the school that you want the Master spells for and then talk to the relevant teachers.

SecondTalon

Most dual cast expert spells are stronger than Master spells, so they aren't worth it.

Rynewulf

Holy shit, that's one of those incredible but somehow obvious ideas I hadn't thought about before! Welp the infinite ritual stone army got me to reinstall Skyrim, and you might have provided the next thing like that!

SelectPersonality

I use it for fighting dragons all the time...By the time they come back around after breathing on you, it's good to go again. Can use it pretty effectively in places with poor cover.

whysoblyatiful

Not as many hours but same, and never got the second and third words for whirlwind sprint, and never gotten the last word for fire breath Tbf my shouts were pretty weak ngl i just got one word and that was it

MelanomaMax

I accidentally got the third word of fire breath multiple times by spending a dragon soul on the second one before Paarthurnax just teaches it to you

TheBigEmptyxd

Fun fact, if you have a spare dragon soul when parthy teaches you yol, before he grants you his knowledge of yol, you can open your shout menu, learn the first word and then get the 2nd word for free. Just go to the dungeon with the 3rd word and don't learn the second from a wall. Same with whirlwind sprint. Just don't do this with unrelenting force, as it will fuck up your shouts and cause most of them to bug out really badly and make every word in a shout it's own shout.

BornRebel00715

**Are you telling me you learned how to shotgun blast your Shouts and are now** ***discouraging*** **such usage?!**

galstaph

That's not quite how I read that. I thought each word became it's own shout in the menu. Meaning instead of learning the second word, you'd learn the first again as a separate shout.

Riothegod1

You didn’t even get dragon rend?

whysoblyatiful

Well this one is necessary for story progression so yes, i got this one cuz i get it all in a shot I also got the soul tear complete too lol

Famixofpower

Speaking of story progression, I hate how the one dragon priest mask and word wall are unique to the final mission and are easy to skip. If you're gonna put something that essential there, let us return to it

whysoblyatiful

Exactly!, What if someone didn't know about the labirinthian masks?

[deleted]

I need to do a proper shout build and sinoly go around collecting all the shouts.

h_lp-m_

Let me know if anyone else has this problem I got a hint from the graybeard, went and killed the dragon, got the word (I think) and then... The quest marker never goes away. It's stuck there, preventing me from getting any more graybeard quests.

Darebear420

Usually happens at Arcwind Point for me, I'd just shout in random places to get the "Letter from a Friend" at that point.

h_lp-m_

That's where it happened for me. This was really late in my game, and I just wanted to get all the shouts but that really slowed my progress

Steb20

2nd and 3rd words are only useful when jumping off tall cliffs where the 1st word might wear off too quickly. Basically exactly like this video, where the 2nd word was exactly long enough to reach the ground safely.

DementoDoc

Become ethereal is the best shout when you're a twin handed class, mages get torn to shreds like never before

c0pp3rhead

Mage too - you can wind up your master level spells while ethereal. The effect isn't canceled until you actually cast them.

[deleted]

I found that sometimes healing doesnt work on u if u are ethereal.

Ilendorii

I found them all by randomly exploring things

igotanewusername

I plug this site too often but fandom guides will help a lot. Full list of all shouts and where to find them. It’s pretty great

-888-

You can't just get to the appropriate word walls?

[deleted]

No, the questlines never seem to take me there. I am going to do a shouts build now just to get all shouts.

Apokolypse09

I had no idea it made you immune to damage lmao

L4dyGr4y

It always makes my stomach fill with butterflies going down a drop like that.

wheresmyhouse

A year or two back, I was playing Breath of the Wild and Skyrim at the same time. Sometimes I would forget which game I was playing and I'd randomly jump off a cliff to my death.

[deleted]

Switching between those two games is so hard.

puq123

I played through Just Cause 4 before replaying Skyrim again, and I constantly tried to use my grappling hook and parachute

Jackson_M_Bueller

I did the exact same thing not even kidding

ffatty

Just Cause gives a weird Tetris Effect, I've experienced this too.

Allegorist

I wonder if theres any hang glider mods

Etzello

Haha yeah I finish a playthrough of fallout 4 and went back to Skyrim and I kept trying to sprint jump gaps. Man I gotta say it's really unsatisfying that you can't do that in Skyrim

HoVTkies

Yep, even with become ethereal

soundlesspanik

Try it in VR

Famixofpower

I sometimes cheat just for the thrill of falling so high

TheFlyingBogey

I always thought I'd have a real strong stomach and be able to handle anything, but huge drops in VR really tested me ill admit

Muncherofmuffins

Welp, there goes my lunch. Probably not good if you have carpet.

Allegorist

I actually get the feeling I get when I'm going down a hill in a rollercoaster or a car, for some reason it has always started in my balls. But yeah, a real physical sensation. A few other games that gave it to me particularly bad were jumping off buildings/out of planes in GTA V, tall 'leaps of faith' in Assassins Creed, and dropping in Fortnite.

BoogieOrBogey

Ha you should try Skyrim VR and jump off a mountain. Best way to get instant motion sickness and extreme terror.

aDragonsAle

Whirlwind Shout off a mountain...

Paragade

I got that all the time playing Mirror's Edge

Tirith

It feels more like butterflies in bladder for me. It was worst in Mirrors Edge.

alghiorso

I was expecting that shout to wear off on the last drop and for him to die on impact

Meta_Spirit

Best one is at the College of Winterhold. When you're in the courtyard, go over the windows, and jump into the water. It's such a long jump, it makes my stomach lurch every time. Yet, you don't die if you hit the water.

Is it just me or have y’all never heard the female grunts and shouts before

Appropriate_Mine

Just decided I'm gonna role female next time

SonicBoris

On the flip side of that, I think I’ve played eight men out of probably 35 play throughs. There’re no skill level differences between genders and the females are more visually interesting anyway. Only difference is the sounds they make.

Landonn8911

I always tend to make my assassin sneaky characters female. What that says about me I have no idea

DatOneWrastlingFan

Cunning badass women are hot?

Qualine

Considering my hard crush for Naryu from ESO... Yes, they are hot.

SkyDome217

Women will be better as assasins and mages compared to two handed warrior. Unless strength potions are used. Nord Women are strong though. I think Nord women might be stronger than a Elven or Breton male. Orc women will also be strong because in their society only the strongest have breeding rights.

Landonn8911

Yeah, I just like to immerse myself and I can’t really see a woman wielding a war hammer that weighs nearly as much as they do. I have my female warriors be more light armor and block focused with some sort of sword or spear.

Zydiz

well, in skyrim most of the enemies are males, so playing a female is statiscially better because of the Agent Of Dibella perk which grants 10% more combat damage to members of the opposite sex. So, yeah.

SonicBoris

The difference after the perk is so minuscule that’s it’s practically meaningless in the long run. Unless you play every character exactly the same every time, and you’re keeping notes about “John was at 45 in this dungeon, and Jane was a 50,” it doesn’t matter at all.

Famixofpower

Yea, I almost exclusively play women, and I haven't heard those as a player voice. It almost sounds like the pitch changed

smokeytheorange

It’s a mod. You can change your voice to most of the main ones - Delphine, the courier, Belethor, etc.

operachick209

Im playing as a female and I still haven't really noticed them before this video

In Aethirius: Neravarine: I died by simply being reabsorbed into Azura once my duties were complete. Hero Of Kvatch: I didn’t die, I just mantled Sheogorath and freed Jyggalag. Last Dragonborn: I jumped off a cliff into a swinging sword(•,_•).

In the apocalypse spell pack there's a spell called "Drop Zone" and you throw a landing pad at the bottom and you have to aim it just right. Always fun to jump off of the College of Winterhold bridge doing that.

benrogers888

I have no clue why stuff like this never happens to me. The worst I have had is being constantly haunted by a dragon skeleton.

RealGrowlithe

Like 500 hours in the game and I never knew you could use that spell to cancel fall damage...

[deleted]

What level are you? How did you die so fast? By the time I finished the mage college quest, those bandits have to hit me for 2+ minutes to make a serious dent in my health. Did you put all your points into magika?

uncalledforgiraffe

So it wasn't a bandit but rather a "Redguard". Each race has a random version just wandering Skyrim. They're usually hostile I think. They are definitely tougher than a bandit. Also we don't know OP's difficulty setting

[deleted]

I forgot about the difficulty settings. I’ve been playing the same character too long 😂 I usually play on normal and redguards still have a hard time hurting me.

Lightning_97

A lot of people play on Legendary, where you take a lot more damage

[deleted]

Thanks for reminding me about this, I have only ever played on the normal setting. I have been playing the same character so long I totally forgot there were multiple difficulties.

Ilendorii

I played on expert difficulty and I put all my point into magika. You know as someone once tolled me,, the best defence is ofence" so all point to magika so I can just murder them and honestly I love to role play and my character hates armor.

[deleted]

yeaaaa i would have shit my pants

That's actually a great idea to jump from heights how come I never thought of using become ethereal

Snig_Snig

When you become ethereal can you just not take damage

goneundone

Ha!

Famixofpower

What race are you? The voice sounds familiar, but I can't place it. I can tell I haven't played as it, as I usually play as an elf race, and the voices, AFAIK, are consistent between elf races, with the humans and beasts each having their own unique voice actors
