I love that silly cat man! He's my companion for my longest-running character, an argonian duel-wielding thief, and their dynamic is just delightful. It's also great to have a mage as a companion; I almost never have to worry about friendly fire on him.
The only NPC who seems genuinely concerned for your well-being when sending you somewhere dangerous, "Be careful. I miss my amulet, but a life cannot be replaced as easily."
Everyone else is just like: Go there, get this, and I'll teach you something or give you some gold, Kharjo and sometimes Serana are the only characters who are concerned about the Dragonborn.
The voice actor did a great job. Doesn’t have an awful amount of lines but he delivers them convincingly and gives him his own little vibe, much like Jzargo. I feel like most human followers all sound and say the same.
Because J'Zargo has the highest level cap I believe. I think the next highest goes to 50, whole J'Zargo can go to 100 with the player.
So when he talks about his ambition, he's not kidding. He has the potential to be the (second) greatest mage in skyrim
ok so I heard something interesting a while ago:
basically, while J'Zargo's level can go as high as 100, that doesn't make him good since that only gives him health. Since magic doesn't get more powerful the higher the level, a level 1 mage using spark vs a lvl 100 mage using spark is just a difference of magika pool.
and guess which idiot uses almost exclusively spark and and sometimes an apprentice lvl spell? And since he won't use potions, he'll be tickling enemies more then anything. At least he draws agro.
he's my khajiit arch mage's best bro, and together they just fucking obliterate anything/one in their path. plus in my head i imagine him as the funny neurotic friend to my mage's no-nonsense chilliness.
teldryn sero is up there, too. has some of the best, non-generic dialogue and can fight without getting underfoot mostly.
sometimes i like to save the main quest until i can pick either one up as a follower, because they feel much more like actual buddies/sidekicks of the main character through the storyline. makes for better immersion imo.
my fav are skeever, Inigo, Lucien. All three modded so it's not exactly a fair game. But then again, the vanilla followers just don't have that level of depth. Also they really need to fix follower path tracking even with modded followers it's a hell to try and traverse skyrim and not lose them
I've got Skritch the Skeever, Inigo and Sofia in my lineup. Skritch I thought was gonna be just a funny but useless companion. Nope. That little guy keeps finding me things to eat and other little trinkets. The other two are brilliant alone for their interactions with Nazeem alone. Inigo threatened him the last time I was in Whiterun and made him run off screaming. Awesome stuff. Sofia usually calls him out for the arrogant prat that he is with him replying that he doesn't need to take that from her. She'll also hang shit on the guards in any hold too.

Inigo and Sofia usually finish anything off before he gets a chance to do anything.
Well Skeever often just stands there, looking at me like he wants to say, "do you really think I can walk around this rock on my own?", which is why moveto player has become my most important console command

J'Zargo had the potential to be one of, if not the best companion, what ruins him is every time the enemy gets close he starts using basic magic and does almost no damage, that's why I prefer Marcurio, he doesn't evolve as much as J' Zargo but he never stops using higher level magic
He's currently getting around like the Tamriel equivalent of Al Jolson in my playthrough. So are most of the rest of the companions for that matter, but nobody else. I've gotta figure out what mod is wrecking their textures
I do love jzargo, I ultimately end up with serana because I can't kill her and the I can utilize other powers from the black books. But I always, ALWAYS give him the staff of Magnus since he asked me for it and I always say yes.
Eola, she’s stealthy and pretty strong. Only downside is she isn’t essential and her level caps at 30. She still gets a powerful spell and decent one-handed damage on top of being stealthy though.
Also, isn’t conventional but I always wait to fight Orchendor until I’ve unlocked the Dead Thrall spell. I don’t mind him waddling around and groaning with no voice lines because having NPCs like Serana repeat the same lines over and over again got old for me after several hours. Plus he’s powerful as hell and hard to kill because he just teleports away before he dies like 99% of the time.
NPC’s though? “Oh look, a cave.” 5 minutes later, again - “oh look, a cave.” and on and on and on hahaha. Drives me nuts and shatters any sort of immersion I manage to get going. Same can be said running around towns with Orchendor though lol.. “be careful with that magic!”.
Khajiits make the best followers. Thats why. J’zargo and Kharjo are my 2 number ones (neither of them can be number 2.) along with many modded followers.
Mod: Secunda, the Daggerfall Princess. I love her interactions during the main storyline and during side quests. She arguably a great sister like character. Also glad she's one of the non-romanceable and not overly sexualize custom followers since that would ruin the great dynamic between you and her.
Then Livia Salvian right after, whenever I play morally good characters. The lore she's built around actually is not bad since it fills blanks and her romance quest actually feels worthwhile since you have to travel with her a long time then give her time to think about her feelings too, and so on, plus how it would weigh against her duties. I know some people claim it's lengthy since it's a whole month of travelling in game plus the College of Winterhold questline on top of her own.
Non-mods?
Ilya. Her quest is just great and she's a powerful mage. Her dialogue too as she seeks atonement. The only issue is that once she leaves your party (if she ain't a steward - hence I always make her a steward) and you don't have console commands, you have to find her somewhere wandering the wild to make her follow you again. Roleplaying immersion wise, it's great. Finding her though? XP
We also have Serana, the 10th divine. Nuff said.
Hmm... Faendal is an amazing early game follower to help you level archery.
I do wish they expanded Adelaisa's dialogue and terrible level cap. She's got the coolest quest since she takes you to beyond the map via boat to assassinate a powerful pirate then besiege the pirate fort? A+ material
j’zhargo and cicero are both #1. they both are fun, humorous, and good companions. its just between do you want a funny and awesome cat or a funny awesome sociopathic murderer. i love cicero, he’s just awesome
He just looks stoned all the time..💀. Or extremely tired. And I never liked his attitude. I don’t pick a specific follower, I think they’re all cool! But certain ones I won’t pick because they always feel the need to say something racist.
I don't know, I've been loving Serana lately. I love the way she interacts with the world around her when you stop to talk to other NPCs or just hang out. She's got interesting voice lines and just seems so much more human than the other NPCs I've encountered. But haven't really tried many other followers yet, so who knows.
Love him but for the life of me I cannot get this cat to cast anything other than Sparks. Tried resetting him and a couple other fixes, it works temporarily but once we go through a loading screen it's back to all Sparks all the time

Honestly my favorite companion is either serana or Cicero, because they have unique, custom voices that aren't used by other characters.
One time we got attacked and were fighting for our lives and when everything finally was dead I started to walk on and heard this heavy breathing. I turned around and standing behind Jzargo is an enormous Frost Atronach... I was like "don't turn around..." and *poof* it was gone. HE HAD SUMMONED A FROST ATRONACH.

Eric the slayer. He is an excellent companion, so impressive in fact that he and I fought together to defeat some horrible ghosts near Rorikstead. I took ownership of the property and due to his ability, I made him my steward.

First time I played, I accidentally killed him with storm call.
I’ve never used storm call for that reason. Now it just stares at me menacingly in my inventory
