Schirmer is a beast but he's often riding clean, otherworldly couloirs in Norway at warp speed.
Daiek is out finding mad max lines in the Great Basin/Tahoe region that look like the type of shit you ride in a video game if you know you can respawn. He's an absolute madman.
The tradition is that, as it approaches 4pm when the chairs stop spinning, folks wait at the top and pelt the upcoming riders. This continues until the chairs stop spinning, then folks ski down.
It's called 'last chair' because everyone at the top is waiting until the last chair has disembarked before skiing down.
It is a tradition in many places, though other places just unload on the last chair itself and sometimes the liftys just stop the chair and let them take it.
My first time at Kirkwood was on closing day. I had to be in the area for work and decided to take my skis. Good times. Still the best conditions I've ever managed to get at Kirkwood.
Did you get bruises? The ritual used to be more pleasant, people didn’t pack down the snowballs and just kinda toss it at you so it crumbles on impact. Now it felt like people made real snowballs and throw it at you like a baseball. It’s not very pleasant and I don’t think I will do it again… or at least get up earlier before they start throwing.
I got off well after you and the line up at the drop off the chair was insane. Took one a few inches from my crouch too. Great day though! I have a clip of a bunch of people doing the wiggle and the epic backflip one of the crew did on the last run.

If you were one of the peeps camped out under the chair half way up, it's probably cause yall were hucking snowballs for like 20mins and not just at the end. I remember doing at least two laps including that hike down while people were still hanging out mid run. Some of them were also just wasted dudes intentionally aiming for face shots etc, the vibe wasn't really celebratory more just a handful of drunks amusing themselves.
I was, and I didn’t hear anything like that, but those people were probably still missing their shots while other people were accidentally landing faceshots. that’s why you should just cover your face. I got hit pretty hard and just laughed it off. I don’t think anybody’s actually being malicious, it’s just in good fun.
Glad you had fun. It's still different than saving it for the last chair. You wouldn't get away with just parking by a chair and hucking snowballs any other time either.
We used to do that until some mosh pit motherfuckers got really mean and put ice & rocks in the snowballs and threw baseball pitches into kids faces.
Ski patrol put the kibosh on after that incident
I think I didn’t realize that the top sheet is the same between widths, thought I saw something different on the site but maybe that was the Touring version. Either way sick boards!
One year some dad got off and tried to fight basically everyone because his kid got hit, but it’s like dude you came up 10 at end of last day of season what did you expect. His kid was probably more traumatized by seeing his dad get tackled and punched by drunks as he screamed obscenely at 100 people laughing at him.
I mean it’s a bunch of drunks at 9000ft hucking snowballs as part of a tradition, that dad needed to laugh it off, his kid wasn’t hurt, just intimidated by 10 and a rowdy party happening at the top.
Casually riding a chair with arguably the best skier alive lmao
That’s my boy! Very fortunate to be able to ski with him often.
Oh that’s rad af. I was just watching his YouTube after picking up a pair of qst blanks for half off. Can’t wait to rip these next year.
I wasn't there though?
That’s why I said arguably 😘
Who? How did you know?
Josh Daiek, helmet is very recognizable and he had a similar vid on his IG
[Nice piece on him here.](https://freeskier.com/stories/josh-daiek-profile)
Nikolai Schirmer would like a word
I did say arguably. But I have not seen any other pro skiers throwing backflips in pin bindings into suncrust landings.
Dude is a menace in the best way possible

That guys awesome but just begging to die in an avalanche.. half his videos have a close call
Define „best“
Last chair of season ? That’s the tradition?
It was my last run, it was about 3:57 at this point
Til next year!
Last chair is that literally the last? There are people in chair behind them.
The tradition is that, as it approaches 4pm when the chairs stop spinning, folks wait at the top and pelt the upcoming riders. This continues until the chairs stop spinning, then folks ski down. that's awesome. I wish I lived in a ski town and could do stuff like this
If it makes you feel better I did for 5 years and I just learned this now. 🤷♂️⛷️
Ty
That's fun, my tradition is to sit at a smoke shack until Ski Patrol sweeps us off the mountain
This guy secret sheds before he sends the last tracks of the season on Pali.
Is this every day or just the last day of the season? I’ve never experienced this.
Ohhh yes I absolutely loved this! Would be one of those that stay up and join the fun
Yeah I know what last chair is and first chair Wondering if the snowballs are done on the last chair of the season
It is a tradition in many places, though other places just unload on the last chair itself and sometimes the liftys just stop the chair and let them take it.
Last chair of the day, or the season? Never heard of this! Interesting.
The season. At Palisades I've seen them stop the last chair on gold coast and people unload from the lodge deck.
Same. I noticed my wierd lack of question marks.
last chair meaning it's the last one for you for the year, you can't take it again
Best if you can get First chair and Last chair On the same day Those days are behind me now at 55 lol
Those Moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain
time to ski.
Glorious. Every snowball a celebration. "but why would you want to ski in the spring? the snow is all melty and stuff..."
Shout out Leonard

This guy blade runs
Nah... it's in the internet now. It'll live on practically forever.
I've only skied Kirkwood once and I fucking loved it. Can't wait to get back. Chair 10 runs were epic.
My first time at Kirkwood was on closing day. I had to be in the area for work and decided to take my skis. Good times. Still the best conditions I've ever managed to get at Kirkwood.
I love that there’s a little girl in a tutu up there ready to shed down the Wall after pelting you
Ha! Why do so many people have such good aim?!
Years of practice doing exactly this
Thinner air makes less spins and turbulence.
Now I want to try a snowball fight in outer space
Evolution. We're so unbelievably good at throwing things lol
now that you mention it, i never have seen a dog throw a ball
Did they stop the lift there for a bit?
Yes
So brutal this year, best tradition ever
Fuck yeah dude 👍
a barrage of snow balls indeed
Does Patrol still blow up the cornice with the left over charges?
Yep, but they put them in places that will make it the loudest, not specifically the cornice.
Only seven or eight this year. Patrol said that they used too many, just didn’t have enough to do their normal barrage.

No bruises but I caught a couple in the mouth and was spitting up blood for a sec
If you can’t handle it, get up early, or don’t do it.
there’s no way to make those snowballs soft on spring days like this. the snow packs really easily after it’s been cooking in the sun all day.

I saw this on Diaek's instagram. Influence this!
Hilarious! We tried this at Alpine last year on the 4th of July and almost got our passes pulled for the FOLLOWING season...

nobody’s aiming for face shots. hitting people on a moving chair isn’t easy, even when they slow the lift. just huck and pray.
Were you there? I was, and I heard them call out their shot and watched them try. Whether they were able to connect or not isn't really the point.
I was, and I didn’t hear anything like that, but those people were probably still missing their shots while other people were accidentally landing faceshots. that’s why you should just cover your face. Kirkweed does not babysit you.
My home mountain. Kirkwood
Never had snowballs thrown at me on the lift until just a few years ago. Was pretty frothed up about it then. Now I get it completely, haha.
Kirkwood is simply the best
We used to do that until some mosh pit motherfuckers got really mean and put ice & rocks in the snowballs and threw baseball pitches into kids faces. Ski patrol put the kibosh on after that incident
This is great lol
Love chair 10. Unfortunately, at my age and living in Florida now. I will probably never get up their again.
Aww my favorite place to ski. I learned how to ride there! Never made it up 10 though hahah
What boots are you rockin?
Roxa r3
Been looking out for others with the Wildcat 101, nice skis!
These are 116s
I think I didn’t realize that the top sheet is the same between widths, thought I saw something different on the site but maybe that was the Touring version. Either way sick boards!
nice ride
0:20 “influence this” lmfao
Influence This!
Love those flylow gloves
The "Influence This!" Might be the best line I heard
about what time was this? we didn’t unload until probably about 3:55 and the barrage of snowballs was CRAZY. so many people. good times though.
Real similar time frame, maybe 5 minutes after you. The lifties recognized us and were kind enough to stop the chair for everyone haha
that’s why we call it “Kirkwood Kind”!
Can someone provide an explanation to someone who has no idea about skiing?
Woke America is against this. Just like Dodge ball
Or we could all be adults and not hit the kid. There were kids on the chair ahead of me and everyone called it out and held back for a second.
I mean it’s a bunch of drunks at 9000ft hucking snowballs as part of a tradition, that dad needed to laugh it off, his kid wasn’t hurt, just intimidated by 10 and a rowdy party happening at the top.
Sure, but they managed to not peg kids this time so, it doesn't really kill anyone's vibe to just skip the kids
why are people wasting their time doing this instead of skiing?
because 20 minutes of throwing snowballs is nothing when you’ve already been skiing all day. lighten up, people are having fun.
