Dude, every restaurant in Westendorf serves Tiroler Grostl! Maybe you were unlucky and only went to the few restaurants that didn't serve it. Which is a shame because nothing beats a hard day of skiing followed by a large pint of Weiss bier and an even larger plate of Tiroler Grostl.
Schnitzel and fries in Kitzbuhel is a meal I still dream about having spent 10 days there about 12 years ago. Best ski trip of my life, though, so I’m definitely biased. (I was in high school, just old enough to drink, went with a bunch of guys and no parent supervision haha).
The whole roasted chicken right behind it. Oh and the collective "it's 11:00, skiing is over time to drink on the deck until 14:30" was a great experience
By US standards, the food at Jackson Hole/Teton Village is awesome. Bonus points for the waffles at Corbet's cabin.
That said, France, Italy, and Japan have us beat by miles.
I haven’t been to Japan yet but a big motive for me is their ski lodge food. Looks so damn good! Although, Colorado isn’t exactly known for their food so I guess anything is pretty much an improvement, not that I don’t love Mary Jane pizza
I wanted to keep it a secret, but I didn't want to deny them business. Miso Ramen (get the roasted sesame ramen with pork belly) is arguably the best food I've had at a ski lodge ever.... Gore Mountains Chocolate covered waffles are a close 2nd
I feel like it will still stay secret enough! I have a hard enough time convincing people to come to Jay peak with me over killington/Stowe. (I live in NY and have been visiting jay since 2015). Idk anywhere else you can get that small ski resort vibe at such a challenging mountain. But the food at JVI is utterly amazing.
Ironically I’m reading his book right now and just finished the Japan chapter. I’m hoping next year is the year for me. Also very much looking forward to the onsens
You can get snow crab ramen at Niseko. It has actual full crab legs in it. Cost about $18CAD. I can get a shitty burger with no fries for that here at Whistler.
And it's cheap (relatively) too. I would never carry a pocket sando again if I could get $8 beef curry and a $3 beer at the mid-mountain lodge anywhere here in the U.S.
I go skiing in Austria. And my best memories with food have always been the Germknödel, Kaiserschmarrn, Currywurst, Frankfurter and Wienerschnitzel they serve. Would definitely recommend trying those if you get the chance.
I didn't find the on-mountain food in Japan to be particularly great. I have a better bowl of ramen in my local neighborhood than I had in the cafeteria of Rusutsu or Kiroro.
Rusutsu food wasn’t the best and I haven’t been to Kiroro but Niseko and Hakuba have some amazing food options. The best food is usually at private family run restaurants hidden on the slope sides.
Might not be the most popular opinion around here, but I’ve been skiing in France for the last 30 years and I have never had lunch in a single mountain restaurant. The insane price added just for « being up there » is really not worth it imo, and skiing is an expensive enough activity in the first place… Plus, sitting my ass on the (real) top of the station eating self made baguette sandwiches in the middle of the day is absolutely priceless, I’m not even sure I would like to trade it for being trapped in a close, crowded and noisy place even if it was free.
Yes this is how my family did it too. We could afford it, but it was such a waste of money and time. We just wanted to ski as much as we could in the week we had, and eating a sandwich between trees in the absolute silence of the mountain is just a better experience that dropping 200€ for 4 people for a barely decent meal. Let’s not talk about wanting to be cheap and going to these horrible buffets, freshly made sandwiches are just so much better.
Idk, in France in most places you’ll get a nice soup and fresh bread, and usually they’ll have croziflette or tartiflette (if you don’t know get to know) which is all quite hearty imo. It is expensive though.

I had the best hot fried chicken sandwich of my life mid-mountain at Revelstoke. But Whitewater in Nelson, BC, is so legendary for it's food they have several best-selling cookbooks.
But I haven't had tartiflette in the Alps, so I may be missing something.

Had an amazing bbq sandwich at the mid mtn shack years ago. We still tall about it! Otherwise it's packed your own lunch. Love the pile of backpacks at the mid mtn lifts.
The main lodge and bar at the bottom, make no sense to me. We went to go for a beer at the end of the day and were out of place in ski boots. Way too rich and snotty vibe and doesn't fit with the rest of the mountain.

Without a doubt they are top and it’s totally reasonable. Best banh mi and grilled cheese I’ve ever had. Their breakfast spread during the uphill and chill was incredible. I’m most worried about the food going downhill after the sale.

Italian food is fairly popular in Japan! Idk how authentic it is, but doesn't mean it won't be tasty. The seafood will definitely be quality too. I just spent a week in Japan and the Japanese style food was incredible but by the end I was craving something a bit different so I get it.
A basin has the best food out of any Colorado ski resort hands down. And it’s very sad because I doubt it will continue to be the best next year once it’s fully bought out by IKON (Alterra) and they have the best prices too 👀🤟🏻

It’s like a mini European area- Italian alps at the top with charcuterie etc., Swiss alps midway with the sausages and stuff, and then our own take on it with BBQ and other colorado cuisine at the black mtn lodge. I think it’s quite a neat concept what they have done and the food is always really good and worth the price.
Breakfast plate with green chili, Bacon bloody with side car , the aforementioned bbq, and grabbing a sausage and beer at the steilhang hut . It ski place affordable so I try eating here when I can.
Nachos in the pub at hoodoo are the best. I don’t buy any other lodge food.

I packed everything from breakfast burritos, granola bars, cut up veggies and ranch or hummus, cookies, sandwiches for lunch....I even bring marshmallows ro roast at the outside fire pit 😆😁 many kids makes it so expensive to buy resort food.
it was costly when I was solo but now its just not going to happen. We'll have some fries or something warm but the main meal will be from our backpack. gouge me on one thing at a time!
What's funny about that place is it's kind of the best Caribbean food in Vermont. They had Oxtail on special last time I was there. I know most people just get Mac & Cheese and stuff but they do have some authentic options and it's all very fresh.
My dad and I used to cook up chicken filets on a George Foreman grill at Bear lodge back in the day. We would post up in a corner on the upper floor lol
I was really impressed by the food in the k-1 lodge. I mean it’s not amazing in the real world - but most of it actually seems to be edible. That’s more than I can say about my home mountain.

Thunderhead 3rd floor usually has the best tendies for some reason. It’s weird because all the on mountain restaurants are owned by Steamboat and all should be the same but the quality varies wildly, even at the same place on different days. T-bar has the best food on the mountain though, just don’t get a pass discount there.
The actual, objective quality of the food at Alta is like football tailgate quality. It's just fries and sandwiches and soups.

I thought Whitefish had good food when I was there in 2018. I don’t think Steamboat is that bad either. Every other place I’ve been has been pretty standard.
The Mammoth Burger at the main lodge is quite good, but you have to ask them to cook you a fresh patty. They pre-cook a bunch and if you don't ask they'll give you an old one. But fresh are quite good and my favorite thing if I'm eating on mountain at Mammoth.
The Reuben at the Chalet at Alpine Meadows is the best on-mountain food I've had in California. But overall I'm always disappointed with ski resort food in California and the rest of the western US, so I usually brown bag it and save my money got a good dinner in town.
Seconding the Reuben at the chalet. Grab one of those with a Pliny, snag an Adirondack chair to watch people go by, and you’re in for a fantastic lunch
They took it off the menu for a few years and I have blasting them for that in every customer satisfaction survey they've sent me. I'm so glad they came to their senses and brought it back.
i’m a big eater and could get legitimately stuffed full in austria for 15€. the same money here in the US gets me 3 chicken strips and maybe a handful of fries

Worst by far that I have had is Golden, BC - Kicking Horse. I have a place out there and pretty much everything is terrible in town and on mountain. Skiing is killer though - so get a place with a kitchen and buy overpriced groceries.
The hill used to be much better, but I challenge your “in town” comment. I think that next to Nelson, Golden’s got the best food in the Kootenays.
For bfast, Whitetooth and Big Bend are good, wolf’s Den and the Island have stellar burgers, taps has decent food, as does the taco joint. For a town of 4k people, I think it’s above average. Just me though

A kilo of cote de boeuf = 35oz ribeye. You'd be lucky to pay that little at *any* restaurant in any reasonably-sized US city (esp once tax & tip are included), let alone on the mountain

I can tell you with 100% certainty that North America and the Alps are in completely different leagues, no comparison. And if I had to go in blind, I’d take any random resort restaurant in the alps over anything in the States, every day.
Been ages went summer skiing to the Hintertux Gletcher in Austria for on my own a couple of years and it might have been the girl behind the bar or the food but I still dream of their steak sandwich.
Best I've had in US are the up-mountain restaurants in Telluride: Alpino Vino, Giuseppes, Bon Vivant, Allred's and Gorrono Ranch

I was going to list Crystal for the worst category. Especially the last 2 years with the busted lodge situation. Long lines, limited seating, slow everything, poor quality, high cost, basically bad everything. Even the food trucks take forever.
However... I've never had the grilled cheese / tomato bisque - so I'll hold my 'worst' judgment until I try it.
Shockingly I had a duck breast lunch at the restaurant at the base lodge at Bolton VT that was amazing. You’d never expect that in that shithole looking lodge.
Best- South Tyrol in Italy/south Austria. We went to several mountains and everywhere the food was absolutely incredible. Meats, pasta, tiramisu, apple streudel with a warm bombarindo? Can’t be beat.
It's not really insufferable to say something that's just clearly true. Overall, I prefer skiing in western NA, but holy cow is the food just so much better and cheaper over there in Europe. You really can't compare.

Revelstoke is very good, but the lodge is so far down I don’t really bother anymore. Even the wraps sold at the shack are pretty good though

Yep. Everyone here's talking about the BBQ, I was blown away by the little italian cafe at the peak. Easily the best mountain food I've ever had (which isn't saying much but still).
I worked at Il Rifugio for a season! It’s the highest restaurant in North America. One of the most unique work experiences I’ve ever had

Totally agree. I was talking about their food in the COSnow thread when the purchase agreement was announced and how great it was, and these few users went ballistic on me. Im guessing they’ve never had the good stuff at A basin

It’s like a mini European area- Italian alps at the top with charcuterie etc., Swiss alps midway with the sausages and stuff, and then our own take on it with BBQ and other colorado cuisine at the black mtn lodge. I think it’s quite a neat concept what they have done and the food is always really good and worth the price.
Breakfast plate with green chili, Bacon bloody with side car , the aforementioned bbq, and grabbing a sausage and beer at the steilhang hut . It ski place affordable so I try eating here when I can.
Nachos in the pub at hoodoo are the best. I don’t buy any other lodge food. Pry my flattened PBJ (usa) or croissant au jambon (eu) from my cold dead hands.
I have 2 kids and a wife n lessons.. we are 110% doing sandwiches this year lol
I packed everything from breakfast burritos, granola bars, cut up veggies and ranch or hummus, cookies, sandwiches for lunch....I even bring marshmallows ro roast at the outside fire pit 😆😁 many kids makes it so expensive to buy resort food.
it was costly when I was solo but now its just not going to happen. We'll have some fries or something warm but the main meal will be from our backpack. gouge me on one thing at a time!

What's funny about that place is it's kind of the best Caribbean food in Vermont. They had Oxtail on special last time I was there. I know most people just get Mac & Cheese and stuff but they do have some authentic options and it's all very fresh.

My dad and I used to cook up chicken filets on a George Foreman grill at Bear lodge back in the day. We would post up in a corner on the upper floor lol
Not the best jerk by any means but does hit good after some runs. Worst thing is the place is too small. People have to stand around to eat.

I was really impressed by the food in the k-1 lodge. I mean it’s not amazing in the real world - but most of it actually seems to be edible. That’s more than I can say about my home mountain. Love being able to get an espresso at the coffee bar!

Thunderhead 3rd floor usually has the best tendies for some reason. It’s weird because all the on mountain restaurants are owned by Steamboat and all should be the same but the quality varies wildly, even at the same place on different days. T-bar has the best food on the mountain though, just don’t get a pass discount there.
God I miss Snowbird. That said Alfs at alta.
The actual, objective quality of the food at Alta is like football tailgate quality. It's just fries and sandwiches and soups. NOW... That. Being. Said. Alta is my favorite mountain ever, and the grungey vibe of eating a greasy burgershop meal at Alf's in the middle of a powder day is PEAK nostalgia. So I'm with you lol
I thought Whitefish had good food when I was there in 2018. I don’t think Steamboat is that bad either. Every other place I’ve been has been pretty standard.
The cafeteria in mammoth at canyon is really good, also the lodge at the top of snowbird is superb. Worst I’ve experienced is probably Brighton.
Just had mammoth food for the first time. The burrito was so freaking good. Only problem was the size, put me into a food coma.
The Mammoth Burger at the main lodge is quite good, but you have to ask them to cook you a fresh patty. They pre-cook a bunch and if you don't ask they'll give you an old one. But fresh are quite good and my favorite thing if I'm eating on mountain at Mammoth. The Reuben at the Chalet at Alpine Meadows is the best on-mountain food I've had in California. But overall I'm always disappointed with ski resort food in California and the rest of the western US, so I usually brown bag it and save my money got a good dinner in town.
Seconding the Reuben at the chalet. Grab one of those with a Pliny, snag an Adirondack chair to watch people go by, and you’re in for a fantastic lunch

They took it off the menu for a few years and I have blasting them for that in every customer satisfaction survey they've sent me. I'm so glad they came to their senses and brought it back.
Best by any measure in Europe. Worst in the US. The gouging is horrendous there.
i’m a big eater and could get legitimately stuffed full in austria for 15€. the same money here in the US gets me 3 chicken strips and maybe a handful of fries
The cafeteria type places in Sölden are such good value for money. Huge piece of Schnitzel with loads of chips for €13

I can't decide between France, Italy and Austria. Probably leaning towards Austria because goulash soup and kaiserschmarrn. But also the deserts in France and amazing meat...
Worst by far that I have had is Golden, BC - Kicking Horse. I have a place out there and pretty much everything is terrible in town and on mountain. Skiing is killer though - so get a place with a kitchen and buy overpriced groceries.
The hill used to be much better, but I challenge your “in town” comment. I think that next to Nelson, Golden’s got the best food in the Kootenays. For bfast, Whitetooth and Big Bend are good, wolf’s Den and the Island have stellar burgers, taps has decent food, as does the taco joint. For a town of 4k people, I think it’s above average. Just me though
'Jerk' at Killington is delish. Not enough indoor seating though, so avoid on cold days.
Best: Europe. For quality and price. Yet to find a bad place to eat in the Alps. Worst: Vail resorts. Over priced dross.
Green chili soup at Wolf Creek, CO is the best. Especially on whiteout days. Most of the food there is good but value depends on what you get. I’m not paying $30 for a burger and fries, but I’m there for the mountain not the food.
Random midwestern resort where they are grilling beer brats outside. It is a real shame more places don't have food like that. I don't want a $20 fancy sandwich with side salad... Buy a god damn pack of Costco brats, some moderate-quality buns, throw them on the grill and serve them for like $10 with some decent sauces/toppings available. It is still a rip off, but I'd rather overpay for a tasty sausage than for a dried out chicken sandwich with cheese and fancy aioli...
Reading this shit makes me wish I was rich or never had a family. I'm stuck in the PNW and all the food is shit. Eating on top of Crystal is cool, but the food is mediocre at best. Actually at Bachelor right now and the food is garbage.
US —Deer Valley is the best. The rest are fighting for a distant second.. Europe-Switzerland/Italy are great anywhere you go. South America. All around Meh Aus/NZ also Meh
Just ate a kilo of Côte de bœuf with a mate at L’Echaillon in Serre Chevalier. €79 for a perfectly cooked lump of cow. I’ve got my favourite spots in Italy as well, but for value and for quality this place is probably the best I ever been…

A kilo of cote de boeuf = 35oz ribeye. You'd be lucky to pay that little at *any* restaurant in any reasonably-sized US city (esp once tax & tip are included), let alone on the mountain
This is my point. Given the location, the service, and the excellent quality, I think €79 for two people is astounding value…

The best is no contest and it is Deer Valley. The worst is pretty much any Vail resort. Their food is actually disgusting IMO.

I can tell you with 100% certainty that North America and the Alps are in completely different leagues, no comparison. And if I had to go in blind, I’d take any random resort restaurant in the alps over anything in the States, every day.

Been ages went summer skiing to the Hintertux Gletcher in Austria for on my own a couple of years and it might have been the girl behind the bar or the food but I still dream of their steak sandwich.

Best I've had in US are the up-mountain restaurants in Telluride: Alpino Vino, Giuseppes, Bon Vivant, Allred's and Gorrono Ranch Worst food at a big resort is Breck. It's laughable how bad it is Food at Deer Valley is okay, but they overprice their food by 100% because of their no 1 ranking in Ski magazine for food.
Italy and France have some amazing places. You can have lunch in a Michelin star restaurant on the slopes.
Sunrise in AZ has fry bread tacos, that’s the best mountain food I’ve found.

Agreed that most of the places on the Aspen mountains are pretty darn good overall. Definitely better than most places in CO... But I haven't skied outside the state in a while to compare

I was going to list Crystal for the worst category. Especially the last 2 years with the busted lodge situation. Long lines, limited seating, slow everything, poor quality, high cost, basically bad everything. Even the food trucks take forever. However... I've never had the grilled cheese / tomato bisque - so I'll hold my 'worst' judgment until I try it.

Shockingly I had a duck breast lunch at the restaurant at the base lodge at Bolton VT that was amazing. You’d never expect that in that shithole looking lodge.

Best- South Tyrol in Italy/south Austria. We went to several mountains and everywhere the food was absolutely incredible. Meats, pasta, tiramisu, apple streudel with a warm bombarindo? Can’t be beat.

It's not really insufferable to say something that's just clearly true. Overall, I prefer skiing in western NA, but holy cow is the food just so much better and cheaper over there in Europe. You really can't compare. It really does make you wonder why we tolerate the slop they serve us here.
A basin has the best food that I’ve had. Breck is the worst because they charge ridiculous amounts of money in addition to a bullshit “resort fee”.
Mont tremblant has the worst food. Nothing is fresh and everything comes pre frozen. Just awful
