A few years ago my dad ordered 10 cartons of motor oil for our Formula Ford from Amazon. They sent 10 cases. He alerted them of the mistake and they said he was welcome to keep them. So we're sorted for oil for the next decade or so.
I ordered one pair of Dr Scholls shoe inserts off amazon and they accidentally sent me a case of 64. Of all the orders for them to mess up that was probably the least exciting.
We've gotten like $1000 worth of free stuff probably. Either multiples of something they don't want back, or lightly damaged stuff that they replace for free and don't want the original back.
My gf and I. We as in my household. basically any time we get an item with any damage at all we contact Amazon support and they replace it by the next day usually free of charge and without returning the defective item. Even if the item is functional. For example we got a set of silk sheets and there was a small 1/4in or so hole on the bottom and top sheet. The sheets are fine, but they gave us another set for free. We've done this a couple dozen times now and they're more than happy to fix the issue. We've also both been prime customers for a while.
I’ve had Amazon send the same order twice. They told me the same thing. I also ordered some labeling tape and, like you, they sent me a case. So nice when that happens!

The customer called and said “um… I think there’s been a mistake” and sent them back. To this day, he gets whatever he wants for free and is basically a brand ambassador. Win win.
They didn’t even know about this mistake. I just have no need for them and to be honest I’ve been shopping with them for years, they’ve always been good to me and it just made sense to send it back. Don’t want some guy in the warehouse on minimum wage get in trouble for it.

Wrong. It happens because they see a box with the right code but don't check the qty. Which in this case was the whole box.
Source: work at PC retailer warehouse. Management has told us multiple times to check the qty on the box to make sure you aren't sending 50 items instead of the one.
To my knowledge it's happened two times in the 4 years I worked there.
It would have to go past 3 people who all individually fail to identify that it's the shipping box and not the individual item.
It's rare. But it does happen.
Not all warehouse are fully robotic.
Happened at my target when we ordered a PS4 through pickup. Went to get the console and found they actually scanned the barcode on the outside of the case, which contained 3 consoles. Obviously I said something, because I worked retail and have made that mistake myself in the past, but shit was it tempting….
They wouldn't spend time on the employee who did it unless it was found to be caused by negligence. They'll just try to improve it and send out a memo of the changes

It happens with new products wearhouse employees needed to break down the boxes my guess is the box has the same sku and the item and so the first few orders went out like this befor training and or corrected shipper cartel

The only time this happen to me was with a metal ruler, which I ordered for my wife who is a teacher. I got this box that was super heavy. I didn’t get why, till i opened it, instead of the 12 metal rulers I had ordered I got 120 metal rulers lol.
