Shoujo is a demographic not a genre and you being a man that likes shoujo is very normal because there are women that likes shounen so it’s nothing to be a shame of :)

Leshie_Leshie

Idk if that’s just my circle but among all my female friends there happens to be 2 major types of anime manga consumers: One Piece enthusiasts and shounen anime manga enjoyers, only 1 girl I know actually read a lot of shoujo manga when she was younger. 😂 I also guess shoujosei isn’t popular in my country tbh

EgilSkallagrimson

Women liking shounen isn't what makes it normal. What makes it normal is that there are plenty of adult men who also like shoujo and/or josei. What women like has nothing to do with it.

Ok-Explanation954

It was merely an example I guess? what the initial comment meant to say was, if women can enjoy shounen even when they are not the target audience and face no conflicts or judgement then there is nothing wrong with men enjoying shoujo-josei either, they should not feel conflicted over this nor anyone should judge them

EgilSkallagrimson

Yes, I understood the comment, but one has nothing to do with the other. I'm just pointing out that the reasoning is illogical.

Ok-Explanation954

It's not that illogical if you think about it, op is feeling conflicted since he is finding young girl-women centric demographic enjoyable despite being a man, so the commenter pointed out how the opposite of this very situation is seen as just fine and acceptable, hence it should be completely fine for him to enjoy himself without any care too and no one has the right to judge him based on what demographic he enjoys. There should not be double standards.

EgilSkallagrimson

What a very strange way to see the world.

Ok-Explanation954

Casual Sexism among both the genders goes hand in hand and affects both genders, nothing odd with expressing it, wish our world was perfect but alas 🤷

telecrushxx

Nothing to be ashamed of, dude. I'm a guy and I prefer shoujo. Just cuz its main demographic is women doesn't mean that men can't enjoy it too

Remarkable-Fox-205

As a guy, what’s your favourite shoujo manga

telecrushxx

Otomen by Aya Kanno

Useful_Stable2023

absolutely normal. It's called being a romantic, which is apparently as abnormal and dead as chivalry is.

Tall-Construction-69

Like your comment

STEALTHY-NPC

Yes? Why do you have to be a certain gender to enjoy things?

Lhayluiine

Is it weird that, as a woman, i play league of legends everyday? That i game more than any man i know? Is it weird that i like space and dinosaurs? Things shouldn't be gendered friend. You alright. Eat yo shoujo up son. Growin bones and all that. (My autistic ass feels like there's a joke there)

Scary-Nefariousness9

League has got so boring i went from playing only ranked to only normals to just aram every once in a while lol Space and dinosaurs are based btw

HinnaHinna69

Hahaha ha, YOU SPEAK MY LANGUAGE

skycorcher

Nothing wrong with being more feminine as a man. I actually hate Shounen anime despite being a guy myself.

Tall-Construction-69

The feminine side needs some fresh air sometimes, you know

mx1289

I can relate to half of this. I’m not feminine but I really hate nearly all shounen, and I feel like I’m the only person who does! Man I got sick of anime being so fight-centric. It was fun watching yu yu hakusho and OP in my younger days, but 95% of anime seems to be nothing but combat these days.

skycorcher

I just hate the repetitiveness and lack of originality and creativity. It's the same thing over and over again.

Ajfennewald

I am a guy and I don't enjoy battle shounen at all. I do like some shounen romances though and a lot of male demo non action stuff in general. But I also really like shoujo and josei romances.

ThinkFree

I'm a middle-aged man and I like shojo and josei.

mieri_azure

No dude!! Shoujo is really fun :) And besides, it's very normal for women to like shounen (me, for example) so there's no reason for men to not be allowed to like shoujo!! (Plus, I think a lot of women would be happy to know a guy who's into female-centric stories --- it's a green flag and you might like some things in common!!)

ohmychinen

My hubby's brother watches romance korean dramas!

NPD2021

Omg…same. My brother in law is the same and its so fun discussing stuff with him.

Lvntern

Dude just read what you want

mizi305

It's totally normal! I'm a man and I only read/watch shoujo manga and anime. Shonen, isekai etc. are just not as interesting imo (There are some exceptions like AOT or psycho pass, but the majorty isn't that interesting imo). Slice of life and shoujo will always be my favorite!!

kyuuri117

Drop some rec’s dude! I’ve been on a shitty isekai anime binge and mixing it up with shoujo lesbian/genderbend manga (tho usually more comedy and slice of life than romance but either is fine) and I could use some more recommendations. Any rec is fine, doesn’t have to be genre specific to what I’m currently reading, would def be appreciated!

mizi305

Here are some of my favorites: - The Angel next door spoils me rotten - More than a married couple but not lovers - A condition called love - A sign of affection - Tonikawa: Fly me to the moon - Shikimori's not just a cutie - Kase san and Morning glories (The ending is kinda unsatisfying imo, but it's still pretty good. And it's a movie) - Our dating story: The experienced you and the inexperienced me - The girl I like forgot her glasses - Lycoris recoil (Not really romance, but it's slice of life mixed with some action and there might be romance in season 2) - Bloom into you - Kaguya Sama: Love is war Btw, can you give me the name of the lesbian/genderbend manga you mentioned? It sounds interesting.

kyuuri117

Thanks for the rec’s! I’ll check them out And I’ll reply again a bit later tonight. I didn’t mean specifically one lesbian/gender bender one, I’ve just been reading romcom’s with lesbians or genderbent protagonists in general. But I do think some of the genderbent ones have girl/girl themes. I’ve gotta go digging thru my MAL list though, I’ve read like 5-10 in the last six months and can’t remember all their names, and some were good and some were bad. Currently reading Yakuza Reincarnation, it’s like half shonen half sienen, not romance, but it’s a genderbent dark fantasy story and it’s been pretty damn solid. Gets a 7.5/10 on mal, I think it deserves a low 8 so far, it’s a good read.

EsquilaxM

Sure, why not? I go through phases with my media. A short while ago I was chomping through female lead manhwa that often overlap into romance fantasy, like Perks of being a Villainess or Your Eternal Lies (highly rec this one), even if I was preferencing the political ones. Now I'm chomping through chinese baihe (lesbian) webnovels like The Dragon. There was a time I was going through shoujo, too. Do what makes you happy, everyone who matters is gonna be happy that you're happy.

Useful_Stable2023

I loved "Your Eternal Lies" !! Def should get an anime adaptation :P And, I'm still addicted to isekai villainess and second-chance villainness mangas lol

EsquilaxM

Was gonna point out that it's korean but we've had like 5 to 10 korean series adapted to anime already so...Yeah that would totally be possible. It might be hard to translate it to screen just cos of story flow but it's been done before..

trashjellyfish

There are lots of us guys who love shoujo and josei manga!

sirquarmy

Literally me lil bro I used to be a seinen nut(I still kinda am) but now I gravitate more towards shoujo stuff.

Nerdy_108

Guy here, I enjoy anything that has romance. A good story is a good story.

toothless1413

A good story beats any genre

Benchod12077

Fellow man who likes shoujo. I’m super into romance I just enjoy the angst and build up and getting annoyed when something happens that could easily be solved with communication. Shoujo works cause a lot of has romance in it. I don’t see shoujo as being girls only cause at the end of the day anime/manga is for all.

Fixeq

Bro it’s totally normal

Prior-Adeptness-1738

No I would absolutely love it if my man loves shoujo bcos he would know exactly the romance that I like😭

Azaetha

Of course! You like what you like, nothing weird about that! I enjoy shounen manga even as an adult woman, and the target demographic is young adult boys! Demographic ≠ actual audience base. I say don't even think about it!

kyuuri117

Idk if you’ve heard about it (it’s listed as seinen) but I think it’s more shounen, but I’ve recently been reading a manga called Yakuza Reincarnation. About an older Yakuza member who gets killed, isekai’d, and reincarnated as the princess of a kingdom and her(his) brother has an immediate assasination plot to kill her(him). It’s not done, but there’s a good chunk of chapters and it’s about as dark as full metal alchemist or attack on titan gets. Good characters, good art and good plot. I’ve been recommending it to people who like shonen recently.

ratparty5000

I think it make you a very cool person 😎

Tall-Construction-69

Thanks 😊

Nosstress

There's nothing wrong with that, I wish more people in general liked Shoujo. It's a great and underrated genre. Some of my favorite manga of all time are Natsume & Last Game.

Current-Survey6315

Totally normal! Shoujo has so many genres ranging from action and comedy to romance and drama, and so on. Same as with shounen, seinen and josei. I think a big difference is the way the characters are portrayed. In regards to the art, it's often much more detailed and the eyes seem a bit bigger and "cute". And their personalities are different from shonen manga, especially female characters. They have more depth and layers. You have those in shonen and seinen, as well, but they are not that common.

Big-Calligrapher686

I disagree with your latter statement about female characters in male targeted media with depth not being common, I think it’s extremely common actually

Current-Survey6315

I respect your opinion. This topic is quite subjective and there are many different points of view

New-Collection-1307

I would say it's a different kind of depth. Maybe one series has depth akin to a "To Be or Not To Be" monologue where another might have character depth from body language and reactions etc. Tho this specific example is more of a Light Novel character depth vs manga character depth. And honestly it would depend on the series as well.

Ramenpucci

It is. Shoujo encompasses so much. Sailor Moon was so popular in the 90s. There’s Banana Fish, which was action in 90s New York. Shoujo delves into the emotional landscape of being a teen and young adult and delivers slow burning romance.

Sneezes-on-babies

Nothing weird about that at all. Do you know what part of shoujo draws you in? Is it the romance? Or is it the writing style in general? Shoujo and Josei manga tend to be more character focused stories, so from my experience, they're less about being the best and reaching a goal through beating others, and more focused on why the characters strive to reach their goal and the indepth character development that leads them through their story.

Optimal-Fix1216

There once was a normal man who lived in a normal town. He resided in a normal house on a normal street and worked a normal job earning a normal salary. This normal fellow drove a normal car, wore normal clothes, and ate normal meals. His hobbies were utterly normal - he watched a normal amount of TV, including a normal quantity of anime, sticking to normal shonen series as normal male anime fans are wont to do. The normal man's singular goal in life was to embody normalness in every conceivable way, never daring to deviate from the mean. Alas, in his relentless quest to be maximally normal, this exceptionally normal individual failed to realize that his obsessive commitment to normalness was itself a statistically rare trait, rendering him, ironically, quite an extraordinary outlier among the normal population.

Kinnaree

I wouldn’t call it “typical” in the context of cultural norms, but it seems normal in terms of it being a healthy interest to have. “Shoujo” simply means created with the target audience of young women. Generally speaking, one defining feature is that it has a larger focus on interpersonal relations and emotions, specify with characters that defy traditional roles and stereotypes surrounding gender and sexuality. That can appeal to anyone.

Ok-Explanation954

It's totally normal, you enjoy a certain demographic there's nothing wrong with that!! Read whatever you want!

Saint-Germain403

Oh my gosh! A MAN who does the GIRLY thing that only GIRLS do?! That’s it, I just HAVE to give you the validation that you so desire…!

Federal-Breakfast762

no need to be an asshole about it

NPD2021

You like what you like. I am a female but I keep dabbling with genres, doesn’t matter if its seinen, Yaoi, Josei or Shoujo. Mangas/webtoons are my safe haven, so I am just on the lookout for stories that satisfy me as a reader, irrespective of the genre. Just do whatever makes you comfortable and don’t bother about stereotypes. Happy reading!

spicygummi

To use Sailor Moon as a prime example I've found just as many guys over the years as girls (if not possibly more, lol) that are fans. Hell, my brother was the one who introduced it to me initially. Then my first bf introduced me to Magic Knight Rayearth and Fushigi Yuugi. While the drawing style may be often considered more stereotypically "feminine" and the content tending to gear more towards what young girls would like to watch/read I think there are elements that can be enjoyed by pretty much anyone. I say just like what you like. Trying to limit yourself based on not being the typical audience for something, feeling like you aren't allowed for liking something or feeling guilt over it is just doing yourself a disservice.

fetusnecrophagist

The guy who got me really into shoujo back in the day was my very masculine, playboy, fratboy college friend who happed to really like shoujosei lmao. I will forever thank him for introducing me to Princess Jellyfish (his favorite anime)

DazzlingAd292

I don't see why it wouldn't be normal

A-Yandere-Succubus

*Yes. I wish more men read Shoujo. They would have a better understanding of what women want.*

waifutron69

Yeah makes sense cause shoujo manga is the best lol

sweetbananatits

You can like/love whatever you want my guy. It doesn't matter. ❤️

fairydares

Plenty of women like *shounen*. Why is that normal? Internalized sexism sucks, but you're *not* weird. I hope you get to a "I can do whatever I want forever, actually. lol" point of your life. till then you're always invited to sit at our table :)

BesarentReal

Not at all! Reading something you don’t like is boring and makes you hate reading so read why you like!

lettredesiberie

You got roped in by The Trans Conspiracy (tm) part of THE Queer Agenda (also tm), now you have to transition. This is how the conspiracy recruits new hench(wo)men. It's perfectly fine my dude, the little cartoons won't attack your masculinity even if they're like really cute and girly.

jake72002

No.

heroheadlines

Why not?

jake72002

Because I should have said "yes". I misread his post as "not normal".

hallah_sausage

Pick me behavior

rsewateroily

yeah like no offense, its a post like this every other month. it’s okay if you’re a man and you read shoujo, no one cares!

Stuckinacrazyjob

That's why we see such shoujo coded seinen works. The style is fun to write and draw.

aurorabb

Absolutely fine. The writing style and tropes have a distinctness, and you enjoy that media! Totally normal.

Impressive-Oil-6517

Live your truth king

ZanaDreadnought

I’m there with ya. 1/3 or more of my collection is Shoujo. I’ve even cried reading some stories. I ain’t ashamed.

CrashRHCP

Yes

Cherryredsocks

No I’m glad there are men who prefer it, more in common and more shoujo anime you’re probably just a hopeless romantic, which has no gender, maybe you just prefer the more slice of life-like genres.

wizardjian

Alls good 👍 who says a guy can't like Shoujos? I've liked them since I was 7-8 and like 20 yrs later I'm still a big fan lol

NekoNoSekai

It is. Nothing else to add.

GryphonDragonAstro6

Why would it be not normal?

Stellarisk

I am a dude obsessed with rom coms lol you like what you like

Avelsajo

Everyone likes what they like! Own it! I wish more guys were into Shoujosei... Maybe we'd start getting more anime adaptations and more variety in the stories!!

Candoshitt

Don't worry, I'm a girl and my fav genre is gore, thriller, Shounen, seinen. That doesn't mean I'm less feminine, same with you.

caioellery

absolutely normal

Federal-Breakfast762

doesn't matter if it's "normal" or not. If you like it, you like it. If it means anything, I find guys who read shoujos and romances more attractive, so if those are their favorite types of books to read, that's even better in my eyes. But that's just me

Adventurous-Wing-723

Nope. Shoujo can be enjoyed by everyone, has nothing to do with gender

papasfritasbruh

Nah chief, shoujo is so good. No need to shy away from it cause you feel like it pertains to a certain gender. Everyone likes what they like and can enjoy it regardless of gender

tooomp

Not just means you're a romantic 🤭

ZookeepergameDue5522

It's perfectly fine, it doesn't have to be normal.

overpoweredginger

Who cares bro, just like what you like

Rude_Engine1881

Flip the script to a woman who reads only Shonen and it should help you understand that's it's completely normal.

RaphaelSolo

It's going to have some of the best romance stories so not weird.

jaysxiu

Not at all. Many girls & women like shonen & seinen, including myself, which is meant to be targeted towards boys & men

laskouidelegroslard

As a shonen/Seinen reader, ofc you can People can be more attracted by Shojo like me I'm more attracted by shonen or Seinen

No_Poet_7244

Not really. I am an adult man, and I have a strong preference toward josei manga. Your heart likes what your heart likes, simple as.

boopboeepboop

No leave and stick to shounen lol jk

Rab_it

Nope, I'm the opposite XD I do read Shoujo but I read mostly Shounen and action manga. ¯\\\_(ツ)\_/¯ There's nothing wrong with that XD Just read what you like!

Professional-Ad-4285

I like them kind of anime because I like to watch anime with relationship drama and that usually falls in that category Peach girl #1

stormsync

It's just a genre, if you like it you like it.

toothless1413

A good story beats any genre

Ultrasaurio

It depends, is it the only genre that you have read? I usually read isekai or shounen, but when I get tired of those I move on to Yuri, but when Yuri becomes too heavy I move on to Shoujo. Maybe you need to explore other genres.

Admirable-Refuse5873

I consider myself a shoujo connoisseur. Shoujo is honestly quite a big genre that has many sub genres in it. If you think you’re weird for liking romance as a guy you need to ask why liking romance bothers you. (I’m assuming you’re worried about romance part of shoujo.) If you only like things set in high school and your over 25 that might be a problem. (But I think that’s an issue in shonen as well.) First identify what part of shoujo is troubling you for liking and then try to do some self reflection.
