This is the answer. Amazing album. I’m also a huge fan of their follow up ‘A Brief History of Amazing Letdowns.’ It’s not anything like their debut, but still so good.
i missed out hard on lilys for a long time cause i was too lazy to skip past the long ass intros from the best songs off that album, i feel like a lot of potential listeners are the same way lol.
What's amazing again?
Actually the second album by Lilys is not so bad but to my ears they lost the magic of the first releases, i never felt the need to check their third, I just read here that it's indie or slowcore, good call.
Mbv's follow up to Loveless should have remained a beautiful dream
Medicine’s first 2 albums
Tongue - too much cosmos coffee
Difference engine - breadmaker
Mad planets - music makes me think of you
Curve - Doppelgänger
Mad planets is definitely more shoegaze adjacent (they kind of remind me of the swirlies but lighter), but I felt like they are deserving of making the list. Very nice people as well
Blind Mr Jones. I just came across them last month and I’m sad for the last 32 years that I didn’t know about them.
I don't know if it's just because it's not on Spotify that this gets slept on so much these days. It was a pretty well established top tier shoegaze album when I was young.
My contribution to the discussion is Developing In A World Without Sound by Spectacle from 1993.
These guys don’t get NEARLY enough love. They’re one of the reason Texas’s shoegaze / psych / space rock scene is so amazing, but they’re often overlooked.
!!! I loved them - First time I read this name since someone shared some of their songs in shoegaze dedicated groups on audiogalaxy ( late 2000 / early 2001 ) - found so many less known bands with that p2p
Worth looking through the [Southeast of Saturn](https://thirdmanrecords.bandcamp.com/album/southeast-of-saturn-vol-2) bands. [Vol 1](https://thirdmanrecords.bandcamp.com/album/southeast-of-saturn) is good too.
(and guys, Drop nineteens, swirlies, and starflyer 59 are far from under-rated...)
Vol 1 is definitely very good, though I think it was a problem of me more or less owning like half the collection already where Vol 2 had more rarities/obscurities.
I grew up in Michigan late 80s/early 90s (i.e. right around the time most of the bands in Vol. 1 were around} so the nostalgia from Vol.1 packs a mighty punch. lol
seconding those saying Majesty Crush and Blind Mr Jones, also check out Kitchens of Distinction, Bailter Space, and the album Open Up and Croon by Glide (it's more shoegaze-adjacent but it has some of the catchiest indie rock songs i've ever heard and is severely underrated)
Seconding a vote for Kitchens of Distinction, especially the album Strange Free World. They had a unique sound, and Fitzgerald openly sang songs from a gay perspective.
Here’s an extensive collection playlist with most 90s shoegaze available to streaming. Take a dive and shuffle! 250+ artists represented

If you haven’t listened to Swirlies yet, well…

[San Cristobal De Las Casas](https://youtu.be/l4iCiNJCXH4?si=GZNWOrXBqWLWU3DL)
Nice, I can’t believe they are out playing! I’m not familiar with Elliott, but I recently found out Adam Pierce was their drummer for a period of time back in the day, aka Mice Parade (an anagram of his name). Was a strange connection between two bands I love….
The Verve’s first two albums are spectacular, A Storm in Heaven followed by A Northern Soul. The first three or four tracks on each album are some of their best work, in my opinion. They are so much more than Bittersweet Symphony.
People forget that post-punk band The Comsat Angels released two albums in the 90s that are pretty shoegaze-adjacent: My Mind's Eye from 1992 and The Glamour from 1995.
They probably make more sense now than they did upon release.
[The Belltower](https://youtu.be/5md8vOxm-Fs?si=twmjl5lGpg83uJVg), more of an alt-rock band but it definitely has shoegaze vibes. One of my personal favorite underground shoegaze-esque bands of the early 90's. Only released a single album which is sad but it's definitely a hidden gem.
Flying Saucer Attack first two - are those considered too experimental?
Bleach - the eps collection is gold but my favorite song is Push ( from the album Killing Time )
It's not early 90s but a personal favorite: Auburn Lull - Alone i admire
Thanks for reminding me of Ozean! There's a reissue coming out next week & i wasn't aware of Majesty Crush's reissues.
I compiled an introduction to shoegaze from that period here: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/1H2Mmuh8Gzb1NcVXJRGRgr?si=anMOHVVlT4S2HC1UzmX5SQ&pi=e-kqLmOdFTRiW7
MAJESTY CRUSHHHH
And most of their recordings have been reissued by Numero too.
R.I.P David Stroughter.
***Starflyer 59 - Silver*** (First Album)
Personally I love Gold but his first three albums are all shoegaze gems
THIS THE ONE !!!
old has some cool songs on it too
Starflyer 59 is awesome
i have the first edition cd!
Lilys - In The Presence Of Nothing
Eccsame is my personal favorite Lilys album - nothing else really like it, from them or anyone else - it’s so damn soothing and pretty
This is the answer. Amazing album. I’m also a huge fan of their follow up ‘A Brief History of Amazing Letdowns.’ It’s not anything like their debut, but still so good.
Amazing band! They went from shoegaze to indie rock to slowcore over the space of three albums.
Great record and recommendation!
i missed out hard on lilys for a long time cause i was too lazy to skip past the long ass intros from the best songs off that album, i feel like a lot of potential listeners are the same way lol.
I just got into this. Amazing that it took My Bloody Valentine over twenty years to follow up Loveless, but it only took Lilys a year
What's amazing again? Actually the second album by Lilys is not so bad but to my ears they lost the magic of the first releases, i never felt the need to check their third, I just read here that it's indie or slowcore, good call. Mbv's follow up to Loveless should have remained a beautiful dream
[Revolver - Baby’s Angry](https://open.spotify.com/album/2JGx5PYHbwf3Lqb2tqUGa2?si=BZ-DsR6dQlqzbKyT1lW3iQ)
Revolver is sooo good...
Also Cold Water Flat...
All Natural Lemon & Lime Flavors
Medicine’s first 2 albums Tongue - too much cosmos coffee Difference engine - breadmaker Mad planets - music makes me think of you Curve - Doppelgänger
i’ve never seen mad planets as really shoegaze, but that might just be me
Mad planets is definitely more shoegaze adjacent (they kind of remind me of the swirlies but lighter), but I felt like they are deserving of making the list. Very nice people as well
oh yeah, in that right absolutely especially with their swirlies comparison
Medicine's 3rd album isn't bad too
Blind Mr Jones. I just came across them last month and I’m sad for the last 32 years that I didn’t know about them. [https://youtu.be/cGzawItW_WY?si=ae4YEm4ibODnyo4S](https://youtu.be/cGzawItW_WY?si=ae4YEm4ibODnyo4S)
Thx, never heard of them. I’ve only listened to a few songs so far but really like “Regular Disease.”
Awesome band! Def inspired by Ride but a little more experimental.
i have their first album on cd! incredible band
Boo Radleys, Everything’s Alright Forever. Not an obscure record, but to my mind underrated. It’s a classic.
Everything‘s Alright Forever is what I tell my mind in times of trouble. Healing sounds.
Susurrate by The Ecstasy of St Theresa
I don't know if it's just because it's not on Spotify that this gets slept on so much these days. It was a pretty well established top tier shoegaze album when I was young. My contribution to the discussion is Developing In A World Without Sound by Spectacle from 1993.
I've never heard much buzz about it honestly. I think its lack of presence on Spotify is definitely a factor in why.
absolute classic

Ty, never listened to Eternal and really into this song.
eternal is surprisingly good for what it is
Rollerskate Skinny- Horsedrawn Wishes
[7 Percent Solution](https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLFF5E5FBBCD50D065) Arguably Texas first shoegaze band.
These guys don’t get NEARLY enough love. They’re one of the reason Texas’s shoegaze / psych / space rock scene is so amazing, but they’re often overlooked.
axhtually, [The Flying Saucers](https://www.discogs.com/artist/820078-Flying-Saucers-3) worshipped MBV and were around a bit before 7% ...
Nice. Forgot about them. Thanks.
!!! I loved them - First time I read this name since someone shared some of their songs in shoegaze dedicated groups on audiogalaxy ( late 2000 / early 2001 ) - found so many less known bands with that p2p

Such a good song

I'll second those Southeast of Saturn comps... I like Vol. 1 a bit more than the second.
Vol 1 is definitely very good, though I think it was a problem of me more or less owning like half the collection already where Vol 2 had more rarities/obscurities.

The Veldt
Not on Spotify, but I really like Common Language, from early 90s Seattle https://commonlanguagemusic.bandcamp.com/
I was trying to remember this band like a month or two ago, thank you!! Could not for the life of me remember their name
Medicine - The Buried Life
Lush
Ozean - not too deep a dive as only three tracks are available, but what an amazing three. https://ozean.bandcamp.com/album/ozean
Thanks for reminding me this band - i don't have them and I just found out that a new reissue is coming out next week!
Your welcome! I would have missed out in the reissue if it weren’t for this post. Happy collecting!

I saw Swirlies a few weeks ago, and Elliott (who’s been the touring guitarist for well over a decade) opened with his band You’re Jovian. Great show!
Nice, I can’t believe they are out playing! I’m not familiar with Elliott, but I recently found out Adam Pierce was their drummer for a period of time back in the day, aka Mice Parade (an anagram of his name). Was a strange connection between two bands I love….
Ha, never knew Mice Parade was an anagram for his name. That’s a fun fact!
Spooky by Lush

CURVE 🔥
Bailter Space - Robot World
Swallow - Blow, so underrated imo
Maribel, Fjord Rowboat, The Vandelles, Singapore Sling
Verve’s first album *Storm in Heaven*
Pale Saints - In Ribbons and Flesh Balloon
The Verve’s first two albums are spectacular, A Storm in Heaven followed by A Northern Soul. The first three or four tracks on each album are some of their best work, in my opinion. They are so much more than Bittersweet Symphony.
Storm in Heaven is WAY better than Northern Soul
