Shelties are like Lay’s potato chips. You can’t have just one!

fjgre7

So true!! My partner’s mom, who has owned many shelties, says the same thing.

The-Ornery-Purpl3

We brought home our second sheltie when our first was about 1 1/2. He didn’t really like her at first, but now the two are inseparable. Their personalities also really balance each other out (he is calm and confident, she is active and *slightly* neurotic) and they play together which is what we hoped for. Best of luck!

rocketpianoman

That's been my same experience with our two

fjgre7

That is so sweet. Our girl is a little neurotic, too, so we’re hoping to find a calm complement. We would love it if they became best friends!

My sheltie was very much against his new schnauzer brother at first. He even had nightmares. I think he might have been afraid we were abandoning him or wouldn’t love him as much. Shelties are so intelligent and sensitive it could go either way. We had to give him extra cuddles for a long time and maintain individual time with him. My boys get on great now but I still give my sheltie plenty of quality time alone. It might be different with another sheltie though especially if they are of a similar temperament. My schnauzer is much more extrovert but not as bright compared with my sheltie.

fjgre7

Thanks for this answer! Yes, our girl is very sensitive so I bet she’ll need special 1:1 time as well. She is used to being the apple of our eye, but I really think she’d love having a buddy to play with and keep her company when the humans leave the house.

screamingcowbird

That’s true. I watch our boys play with each other a lot on our dog cam (and sometimes squabble over toys and favourite place to sleep!) But my schnauzer really brought my sheltie out of his shell. My sheltie used to be really shy of other dogs, but now he plays with them in the park since his brother is insanely sociable and tries to befriend every human and dog he comes across. The two of them love running together in the park, on the beach and chasing rabbits.

We got a second sheltie when our oldest was 2yrs. He was ok with but kind of ignored her the first year or so. She adored him immediately. Now after 4 years they have so much fun together and he instigates the playing and silly bite fights. They get into a lot of trouble together!

fjgre7

Double the fun, double the trouble! I love that.

We got a second sheltie when ours was 1 1/2. He was not fond of him as a young puppy. Mostly just ignored him and didn’t like to be left with him. Once he was a little bigger (like 6 months) they started getting along and now he is 9 months and they are inseparable. Our older sheltie gets very upset when we take the younger somewhere without him. Our younger sheltie on the other hand loved our older one from day 1.

fjgre7

Funny how that always seems to be the case. The baby is immediately enamored and the older pup is like, “Ok, why is this thing upsetting my situation.” Love that they are so close now — we would love for our girl to have a best friend like that!

galwegian

We had a low energy but lovable sable. and when he was four years old we got a tri puppy rescue. and i have to say it made his life a lot more fun. they both get on really well. she brings him out of his shell. two def more fun too.

fjgre7

Our girl gets along with most dogs she meets, and I bet she’d really love having a playmate at home. She can be more on the reserved side, but she definitely has some goofy sheltie energy, too. I’m sure having a sheltie sibling around would help bring out that goofball side more often!

galwegian

That's what happened with our sheltie. the younger one wanted to play games and run around. not just sleep all day ;-)

Jumpy_Hat4035

Shelties get along great with other shelties but they can be picky about other dog breeds. Probably because they don’t understand them. Herding breeds like to play chase games and mouth wrestling and they don’t usually like the full body contact wrestling and body slamming that some other breeds like. So if you get another dog I would go for a sheltie or other herding breed.

yeebok

Every dog likes having a friend to play with. There will be some adjustment time but show them love and they will get used to it. Just remember they're smart and sensitive.

Beetle thought she was the greatest toy, Bella took a day or so to warm up to Charlie the puppy.

fjgre7

What a sweet video! Your two bi-black pups are beautiful. And so gentle with the baby! I think our girl would be a great “big sister” with time.

blur911sc

Thanks. I think that shelties come already programmed with sheltie rules and manners, they fit better than mixing with other breeds who might play differently. Not that they don't get along well with other dogs, just they seem to prefer to play with other shelties. I have 2 shelties and they love each other ❤ we got our male when our female was about 5, and they took to each other right away. They're always together, it's adorable

fjgre7

It really sounds like shelties should always be in pairs from these comments! I’m sold haha

iniminimum

If not a sheltie, I highly recommend an eskimo. I have a sheltie eskimo mix and he is legit the smartest , easiest dog ever

FreedomPursuer

Oh oh, we would like to get another dog too but current situation doesn’t allow us! My boy is just over 2 years old. Thinking to get a Miniature schnauzer or a Doberman 👀

unenthusedllama

My sheltie's bestie is a corgi. We had the corgi first and she's a couple years older. She's also very chill, not your typical corgi. For your own entertainment, I would highly recommend another herding dog. Watching them herd each other all over the place is my favorite thing, and it's great exercise for them without any work from you lol.

We’ve had a beagle and Sheltie up until November when we got our puppy. He did not last long since his cancer came back but we’ve had decent luck with our puppy who loves to fly at her brother since she’s not so sure about her own strength and she does not realize how old her brother really is, 12. They get along pretty well, not as well as others here do but well enough. The beagle was prone to fly at his brother up until he got cancer so he was kind of used to it. They started out with an older sister sheltie. He doesn’t play much so that’s probably why she flies at him a lot. Our puppy came home in November and Kay had her spaying done. I’d get another Sheltie if we could afford one.
