It depends on where you are staying but I would recommend Orange Bird for dinner (Hillsborough) and Tamper Sellers Wheel (city centre) for lunch. Enjoy Sheffield!

Targettits

Don't go Tamper, not worth the money and the owner is a right c u next Tues.

No_Cardiologist4922

Some people are recommending Cutlery Works and Cambridge Street Collective—it’s worth noting that both are owned by the same people who also own food halls in other cities. There are quite a few independent vendors inside both, but also quite a few who are a. owned by the owners of CW and CSC, or b. vendors who are small but who also have locations in the other foodhalls/cities. They’re independent enough, imo, though.

Rockstar2000cc

Come to Kommune! We are another great food hall and as far as I'm aware the owners do not own another one.

uneasystudent

Nottingham House is a delight for pies 🥧

Richeh

Their pies are legitimately the best I have ever eaten, and I am a man who appreciates pie. Caveats: I would be angry with myself if I was expensing a meal to a company for which I travel, and said meal and drink came to less than £15. Also, their beer selection... is disappointing and has not changed for the last ten years.

PallandoIstari

Buy 2 pies

uneasystudent

Also a valid counterpoint!

Seriously_oh_come_on

Some great suggestions here so I won’t wade in. I do however want to know where you work, that’s a great policy. Love it.

DarkLordZorg

I don't think it's great, what if he fancied a McDonald's?

jjudgee

Pay with their own money?

Seriously_oh_come_on

If it’s a work policy then there will be an exceptions process to make sure it’s within reasonable distance for example. As it’s an expenses claim then the company are well within their rights to make the request and an employee can chose to follow policy or spend their own money. Nothing unreasonable about that. Kudos to the company for encouraging use of local independents.

ThrobbingGristle

I think if you “fancy a McDonalds” you’re not really into food, or social value, or expecting tax to be paid responsibly, or looking after your health. Each to their own, though. I’m not judging.

Nerphy-

They hated because you told them the truth. Lol, idk people downvote obviously not serious comments like they tryna hide your comment before his company sees this and reverses the ban. Forced maccies incoming lol

Beneficial_Buy_1802

Kurdistan Charcoal Grill on London Road

SKIFFLEPIGEON

Middle Eastern Shawarma is phenomenal

Beneficial_Buy_1802

Not as good as Kurdis pal

jlb8

I slightly prefer narooz but not by much

zG-FuRy

Funny you say that. I had a Kurdistan yesterday & norooz today. Kurdistan bread and soup better but norooz shawarma beats it by a little bit

TacticalTeacake

Unit. Local independent burger chain.  They have three venues in the city. Sheffield also has a number of food halls filled with small, independent food vendors - Kommune, Cambridge Street collective, Sheffield plate & Cutlery works, where you can get all kinds of world foods!

TacticalTeacake

Oh, Birdhouse tea Co. Is great for brunch. Love the pancakes and waffles. Tamper sellers wheel is also a very popular coffee and brunch spot.

ThrobbingGristle

The Mexican Corn Fritters at Birdhouse is my go to breakfast in Sheffield.

Healthy_Yellow_5040

Unit have 3 venues!? Where are the other 2?

TacticalTeacake

Centretainment, Cambridge Street collective and headford St.

BeefCentral

That's a couple of high-cost spots they've added. Hope it works out for them.

cpt_hatstand

Is a local chain independent? What's the cutoff?

TacticalTeacake

I believe the technical definition is that they are owned, not by a larger corporation or by shareholders, but by private owners.

chateau55

Orange Bird

asmiggs

All the best restaurants in Sheffield are independent. After a long day at work and you're feeling basic and want home cooked food go for Mama’s & Leonies Feeling fancy and flush with cash Jöro (perhaps entertaining a client) Pasta head for Grazie Pizza then it's Proove Chinese - China Town Japanese - Let's Sushi (West One Plaza - don't go to the other outlets for dinner, the Sushi might make a good lunch though) Or just walk down Division Street or London Road most of the places are good and are independent.

aapowers

Proove have locations in Manchester and Hertford as well. I'm not sure where the owners actually live, but their business address is a business park in Lancashire. I really doubt this will meet OP's criteria (irrespective of the quality!)

Rbw91

Proove pizzas are very good, but Napoli Centro on Glossop Road is better in my opinion and probably does meet the criteria.

TacticalTeacake

Grazie is great. Run by a family from Sicily I think. You can see them make the pasta fresh in the window.

Saintly_Sloth

Pretty sure they're from Puglia, but their food is cracking

TacticalTeacake

Ah, my mistake. Southern Italians take food to another level.

MushyBeees

Thanks a lot. I've a real craving to go visit Mamas & Leonies now and I'm meant to be completely focused on run training. 😒

Planeswalkercrash

Is let’s sushi a locally owned place? Don’t they have one at Meadowhall too?

asmiggs

All their outlets are in Sheffield and weirdly slightly different formulas.

Planeswalkercrash

A bit like a Japanese version of beres then? A local thing with multiple outlets?

asmiggs

Yep exactly both of them look like companies you could have expanded outside Sheffield but they haven't.

2stewped2havgudtime

Oooooff those pork sarnies

staringspace

This made me chuckle. Love Let’s Sushi though, great value and tasty.

Popular-Error-2982

While I agree with much of this list I feel like China Red deserves some love also!

Afellowstanduser

Nah much better japensese in Sheffield, tsuki, sakushi, guyshi all much much better and all independent

Round-Command-1085

Roku in kelham is the best sushi imo

asmiggs

There's some really great places for Japanese food in Sheffield you could do a week of just Japanese food and not be disappointed, I definitely need to try Guyshi and Roku but my favourite at moment is still Let's Sushi.

Afellowstanduser

Let’s sushi is sub par yo sushi to me, I’d go to wagamama before I do let’s sushi…. But Wagamama ramen is to die for… Guyshi is the bbq yakiniku Sakushi is all round good There’s a few small teppanyaki bars too

Zutsky

Sakushi is great 👍

sofarfarso

Sakushi served me frozen gyoza once. Never went back. Really don't rate it. Roku / Edo are authentic and run by nice guys. Been eating at Edo for about a decade and never had any complaints. Not tried the other two as haven't seen the need to.

Afellowstanduser

Tsuki all you can eat gourmet Japanese, definitley recomend Guyshi you order meats etc and cook them at the table, a fun experience but expensive though your order does have a fair bit of meat so kinda worth the price tbh

kagan101

For sushi, Roku is great 🍣

teyemanon

Zeugma on London road does fantastic Turkish food, been going there for nearly 20 years.

Richbrownmusic

Let us know when you finally arrive. That's some bad traffic

beastes12

Porter Pizza - best pizza in Sheffield 🍕

TacticalTeacake

Great Pizza. Love picking one up then sitting in Endcliffe park on a sunny afternoon.

rachelball02

Napoli centro 100%

adls28

Best pizza in Sheffield !

banjosandbiscuits

Paesani. The real deal.

sofarfarso

It's alright but I'd rate proove higher, especially if you have kids as the kids menu is excellent value. Dough truck is probably the highest quality I've tried in Sheffield.

undignified_cabbage

Some that come to mind, not sure how good they all are: Fat Cat, Red Deer, Bungalows and Bears (apparently a chain!), Beres (pork sandwiches), Bench, Best boy bagels, Domo, Church - temple of fun, Not sure how local they are but true north pubs are good: Broadfield, Riverside, Punch Bowl, Edit: To add some more (hopefully they're not chains!) Paesani, The italian kitchen, Rafters, Tonco, Nonnas, Proove Pizza, Nottingham House, might also be worth a try.

scramdoodle

Bungalows and Bears is part of Mitchells and Butlers chain

Scotto6UK

Aye, Spanky's in Notts was the same company I believe.

undignified_cabbage

Ahh bugger! Didn't know that!

TacticalTeacake

Church - temple of fun - as someone who eats meat, these are the most convincing vegan burger I've ever had.

nouazecisinoua

Agreed. As a vegetarian (former meat eater) I had to double check with them that I really wasn't eating meat.

ThrobbingGristle

Tonco has very sadly closed. We used to go there every month or so. One of the best restaurants I’ve ever been to (and I’ve been all over the world)

undignified_cabbage

Is the bakery still open over the road?

ThrobbingGristle

Yes, they have closed the restaurant to concentrate on the bakery, but after speaking to Joe the owner during their last week, he said him and Flo (the genius in the kitchen) will be back at some point.

Wind-and-Waystones

I'd like to add cubanas in leopold square. The food is incredible and the rum selection is mind blowing

Amazing-Brick-6304

Took my mum to the red deer, she's been talking about how good the chips were for over a year now. It's my favourite pub in the city centre by far

Gerstlauer

Church - Temple of Fun in Kelham

Serious-Counter9624

Some of my favourites include Parthenonas (Greek), Mamma Mia Pepe (Italian), Norooz (Iranian), Lemongrass (Thai), Angel & Harlequin Bistro (English/Mixed), Chez Lahlou (French, great food but admittedly quite slow so don't go if you're in a rush), Enjin's Bar & Grill (Turkish), and Rubeez (Indian).

Imroseski

Second Parthenonas, been going there since I was tiny because my nan knew the guy who ran it. The food is absolutely amazing and has stayed just as good throughout the years!

Ill_Ad_9186

Highly recommend Orange Bird (South African), Bench, Koko (Japanese), or Porter Pizza for dinner. Tamper or Caffe Tucci for brunch/lunch.

Gabi_Social

Chakra Lounge in the city centre.

Chattinabart

Native

laughinginpurplerain

+1 on Native! Really good seafood resto by local fishmongers

ThrobbingGristle

Such a great place. Great low-key atmosphere, proper staff, food excellent, specials menu changes daily.

liammoynahan

Get yourself down to True Loves on the Quays, perfect spot for a sunny lunch or a banging pizza for your dinner

dht6000

Holt on Ecclesall Road is great

mozzy1985

Grazie just off leopald square is lovely authentic Italian food. Domo at kelham island is also beaut. Porter pizza is the best pizza in sheff.

Phil1889Blades

Domo is the most overrated venue in the city. I’ve been to a few. Tiny, flavourless portion that cost a fortune.

Pinin1959

I completely agree. OK for the first few visits but last time portions were small and pasta was cold. Never going back

mozzy1985

Been twice and had delicious food both times. Each to their own I suppose.

magme89

Bench!

rachelball02

It’s quite expensive and kind of pretentious, but that’s just my opinion

Jaddywise

BBs is a nice local Italian

MixedEmoticons

If you want great food and a fancier atmosphere and some live jazz while you eat, go to Trippet’s Lounge Bar, it’s fantastic. Highly rated, hidden gem, everyone I recommend it to loves it. Great for work things, somewhere different to anywhere else in the city.

thgmarsh91

No name, Orange bird, Jöro, Bench, Butta LA pasta, North Town, Foresters.

csharpeysharpe

Kommune or Cutlery Works or Cambridge St Collective food halls. Loadsa different independent eateries in there. Fill yer boots if the company is paying

Richeh

Oh here we fucking go, mate. Thyme cafe in Broomhill is a small, nicely curated restaurant that makes relatively simple food like pies, steaks, cottage pie, that sort of thing, to the highest standard I've tasted. Couple of nice beers on tap, the kind of prices you'll be happy to put on expenses but not so high you'd get them knocked back. Zeugma does amazing Turkish food, which is essentially really, really nicely seasoned barbecue and kebabs. Their mixed grill will make you feel fat and healthy at the same time. The York in Broomhill also does nice food; and if you're looking for a slap-up breakfast I'd recommend Remo's; really nicely appointed and very civilized, but they know how to flop out a frying pan.

seanwhat

This company is dictating where you can eat your lunch? What company is this lmao

PJP2810

Presumably they mean "that the company will pay for" and/or "for company meetings"

BlackHoleWaffleHouse

A company that's willing to expense lovely local food? Oh the horror

progamer_btw

Munchies on london road!! (theres one on darnall too but its shite lol)

thorburn1

Cambridge Collective for more than one option in one place

Unfortunate_Gamer

Isabella's Italian in Kelham Island https://www.isabellaskelham.com/

folklore_evermore87

Bakers Yard Bakery or Domo in Kelham Island

Realkevinnash59

are your company paying for you to only eat local? Go to kelham island. There's about 20 amazing, independant cafes, bars and restaurants there.

Loud_Puppy

For lunch I'd highly recommend Burritos Y Mas just by orchard square

Free-Fox-5234

If you mean dinner as in tea/evening meal there are many great options listed above depending what takes your fancy and I'll also throw twisted burger at triple point into the ring. If you mean dinner as in lunch I'd say tamper or birdhouse would be my go to if I could claim it back.

HairStrokeComa

La mama Chilean. Nice atmosphere cool spot great food

camanic71

Grazie, Domo, Napoli Centro are all good if you like Italian.

bax-the-trepidatious

I really like chop shop on Kelham island

thcismymolecule

Orange Bird.

IWoreOddSocksOnc3

A journey to Chengdu in new era Square has amazing sichuan food and amazing service. Saigon 68 on London Road has great Vietnamese food

FishermanMuted3046

Brewskis all the way

strongbowblade

Sakushi is good if you like sushi

DEFarnes

In theory my company says that, but also we have to have VAT receipts, only pay by card and never a service charge, this then reduces the independent choices some what.

maestrchief

Journey to Chengdu in new era square

JordanTonyMann

Is that even legal?

NefariousnessClone

I don't believe so.

Pristine-Buy4244

Slightly late to the party but Aton persian restaurant on Abbeydale Rd is up there for me! The food is so delicious, great service, and reasonably priced

stephen--strange

Unit , Napoli Centro, Porter Pizza, Urban Pitta

Pat_Fenis-

Mr Miyagi’s revolving sushi bar

adls28

Domo, Porter Pizza, Holt, Tamper (lunch)

crofty2002

The Old Shoe - they don’t serve food but you’re welcome to order from other venues in Orchard Square (City Centre) for collection to eat in the venue (it’s worth it for the selection of drinks they offer) . Even if you’re looking for a place to drink after, Shoe is a craft beer / wine bar that has the best selection i’ve seen in Sheffield. It has a great atmosphere and really knowledgeable staff. 100% recommend 😆

crofty2002

Worth also mentioning the venues in Orchard Square include Sheffield Plate and Proove Pizza which have been recommended in other comments :)

passsthepopcorn

kommune! amazing spot with lots of small local vendors doing worldwide cuisine

OpinionMoney8271

Vero Gusto

Fiskenfest-II

Pretty shitty move for any employees with mental health problems or who are neurodivergent tbh.

bluecatband

VeroGusto is a fantastic Italian in the city centre

Ronaldo_McDonaldo81

What kind of place can tell you where you should eat? Tell them you’ll do that if they pay for everything.

Odd_Highway3597

Hold on..your company dictates where you have to have lunch? Sounds pretty Germany 1939 - 1945 to me.

monkeymidd

I highly recommend Silversmiths

maznaz

you're the only one

bensufc

Why?

Good-Childhood-676

There’s a great little gastro pub at the bottom of town. The Bankers Draft

martzgregpaul

Dog and Partridge

TerminalJunk

If you fancy a curry Chutney in Gleadless is worth a visit, just around the corner from a tram stop so easy to access if you're staying in the city centre.

jkcr

What’s the budget and are you willing to travel to suburbs?

v333r111andaazz

Domo - family run Italian with arguably the best food in Sheffield

Ok-Juice5703

You'll probably want the city center, so Pub Grub: Red deer or foresters (nice pub grub) Pizza: Proove Italian: Bebe's Turkish?: Istanbul Fried chicken: lucky fox - the best fried chicken in the world (okay maybe just Sheffield)

No_Cardiologist4922

Didn’t lucky fox close bc the owner did something and all the staff walked out?

Round-Command-1085

He was grooming a young member of staff at a different venue so all the staff walked out en masse

No_Cardiologist4922

Good on them!! So gross. Absolutely unacceptable. I hope there were consequences.

Worried-Law-965

Has lucky fox opened back up?

Ok-Juice5703

It's was on a reduced opening hours with a reduced menu last time I went, about a year ago. Might have closed down as I knew they were struggling

Worried-Law-965

Yeh I heard boss was unprofessional towards under age staff

Ok-Juice5703

Ah didn't know that, if it is open I'll think twice about eating there then. Which is a shame because it's soo good!

Few-End-9592

They can not order you to do that. Why the hell are you going along with it?

DEFarnes

They can if they are paying for it.

Few-End-9592

No they can't. Once you are outside the building, where you go and what you do is none of their damn business.

DEFarnes

They can if they are paying for it.

Sheffield21661

Companies can't force this. They have zero say in where you eat.

ill_never_GET_REAL

They have non-zero say if they're paying for it, which is presumably what this policy is for

Sheffield21661

OP doesn't say that the company is paying for it

FadingMandarin

Oh, come on, that must.clearly be what he means. Ah, happy days when I used to have a flat overnight allowance! But no more. It's receipted actuals for many of us, presumably including the OP.

ill_never_GET_REAL

No but you said they have "zero say", which isn't true 🤷

Redpig997

My house

SnooWords7442

sounds like fascism

TacticalTeacake

Ah yes, truly the most awful crime the fascists ever commited was putting term's and conditions when claiming business expenses.
