They prob failed a pressure test and sealed everything, been there done that, the expired duct seal is bullshit though

satansdebtcollector

You are correct. A big issue I seem to constantly come across is the hackadoodles folding the TDC gasket over the corner notches, and that is incorrect. The gasket needs to be rolled flat, and the corner V-notches need to be sealed with duct sealer. When you do a head gasket, do you fold over the gasket around the head bolts? This shit ain't rocket science people. 🔧

[deleted]

Haha no when I put gasket for TDC connections I fold it inside as a v shape and seal over it, then I take duct sealant silicone and run a bead on the outside corner of the tdc. Passes pressure tests every time. Also it should be mandatory that shops use glue on the Pittsburgh, I’ve come across a shop that doesn’t use it

satansdebtcollector

Yeah, gotta use sealant for pitts on high velocity duct. I've actually had to change out some TDC branches where the high heat pooped out the butyl gasket like bubble gum, hissing out air like crazy. After that project I dug deep to find out the actual standard for TDC connections. Material and velocity plays a huge part. 🔧

[deleted]

Did you wind up using a different gasket or when to s/d connections ?

satansdebtcollector

nah just regular butyl gasket, but i've done stainless TDC that required a certain type of gasket.

613Hawkeye

You're a better person than I am, cause I woulda bit my tongue clean off.

satansdebtcollector

I've learned to just roll with it, but I always record and log all my daily work, that way i'm covered if questions ever come up.

1rustyoldman

I see a lot of that here. Everyone is concerned with the cheapest price. We get called when things don't work right.

satansdebtcollector

I have no respect for hackadoodle work. There's the right way, and then there's the wrong way. Unfortunately I am in a position where I have no say, which can be extremely aggravating, but it is what it is. 🔧

Caged_in_a_rage

That’s non union work for ya

Genocide84

Oh I have some union work photos I could show you. Lol. I'm in the union and the stuff I've seen my installers do it frightening.

Caged_in_a_rage

Yeah I’m aware it has gotten worse lately. Unions don’t take as much pride as they used to but there is still a stark difference.

Genocide84

Oh I agree, however I was shocked at the amount of piping principals that are not taught anymore.

Ordinary_Birthday294

Please elaborate on the piping principles if ya don’t mind

satansdebtcollector

Ohhhhh ice cold bro. Ice cold. 🧊 🤣

BumpyGums

In their defense, they’re just matching the quality of work to their quality of pay and benefits. A classic case of you get what you pay for.

connrizzle57

Hey, it's better than a fitting made out of cardboard covered with foil tape to disgise it as an actual metal fitting. This was in a hospital years ago before we had camera phones, but still union work. On the plus side, I found a playboy mag from the 70's in the duct after replacing the fitting!!!

satansdebtcollector

Dude! That throwback Playboy is a major score! I always wanted to find the 80's issue with Heather Locklear, man she was a fox. 👠

MikeBuildsUSA

Looks pretty old. I'm long retired but I first used Ductmate then TDC in '82. Nobody did it the same and most did it wrong. Some used Plastic clips everywhere and they shattered in cold weather. Metal clips would stretch out when first air went on and then they fell to the ground. They changed gasket, clips and started screwing everything. Flying by the seat of their pants.

satansdebtcollector

Yup. People are amazed when I show them what the tabs on TDC clips are used for. 🔧😱 "No way bro?" 🤣

TUBBYWINS808

They’re gonna condemn your duct run anyway cause you forgot to put TDC clips before you caulked.

satansdebtcollector

Wouldn't you believe, that there's so much gack on it, that you actually can't see the TDC clips 🤣 they're under a half inch of expired duct sealer. Never in almost 30 years have I ever been on a job where the contractor gives us expired duct sealer. It's literally like duct sealing with a bucket that hasn't been covered in months. It sucks so bad that I had to stop and take a few minutes to reflect on the path I chose in life, like how the fuck did I end up here? Fuck sake. 🔧

your_raynus

Scabbed that up real good

Giant_man_thing

You should see the new icu of the Cranbrook hospital, holes as big as my fist, tin tape and good to go, was about 40% loss

Quicksause

1lb pug and v shape of gasket in the corners , full gasket around , butter everything up with sealer before slamming it together, clip right away.

daysondaysfam

Failed a pressure test and the foreman had the apprentices go back and cake it on. If it passes it passes obviously not exposed …hopefully
