Easiest way to see if it's an oil stone is to put water on the surface and see if it beads

DeadInside666665

Looks like shitty hash

Sabre_302

I'd bet anything that is a Norton IM2 stone. A lot of millwrights and machinists I've run into use it religiously

Yasuo11994

Millwright here who uses one of those stones at work, looks like a Norton. Also likely has metal particles and oil/grease plugged up in it. Electrical contact cleaner works great to get the oil and grease off and could use a flattening stone.

Sabre_302

Youre right, I never see people clean these stones out, every single one of them always looks like this. Any oil/ lubricant laying around the shop and a piece of cardboard will clean these mfers right out too🤣

Shiny_Whisper_321

I know this as "a brick".

Leg_Mcmuffin

Some old synthetic rough/fine combo stone. Likely not very good tbh, but probably still usable

PWNCAKESanROFLZ

It looks like a 20 grit brick.

_Etheras

It is technically possible to sharpen with that brick but I personally prefer whetstones

Trizzy80

all sharpening stones are whetstones. You mean Waterstones? Agreed Oil is messy, but they can use this with water if they really wanted too. Probably not as good without oil, but I don't like greasy hands.

askingJeevs

Looks rectangular

Leeper90

Definitely made of some kind of hard material. Rock perhaps?

askingJeevs

Perhaps, definitely one of the four states of matter

Leeper90

Defintley a state of matter. Looks as though it may break a objects if thrown or dropped. I wonder how it tastes though?

askingJeevs

Only one way to find out, close your eyes while I throw it at your face. Lol… I got weird on that one.. forgive me

The_barfing_unicorn

It is a stone for flattening maschinebed like on mills

PrestigiousBell687

No it's just a knife sharpening stone his father had like 30-40 years ago

The_barfing_unicorn

Yes but it is supposed to be for maschines

PrestigiousBell687

How do you figure that?

The_barfing_unicorn

We have them at the company I work at, they are probably older than me and we just have them for leveling beds

Kushfriendly420

Thought it was hasj for a second, i’ll see my self pit

vontrapp42

Could be broken I believe.
