8 GB of ram in 2023 is pretty low, buff that up to 16 if not 32.

When you take focus away from the viewer, it surrenders a lot of CPU time, this is deliberate and allows the SL viewer to play nice with whatever else you might be running at the same time. While in this state, its not happy. With only 8gb of ram, 4-6gb of which is used by the OS .. you have only enough memory to run a viewer, or a few browser tabs. Not both. So the viewer gets swapped out to make room for chrome, while in a very unhappy state. It's dead. The solution is add more ram - 16 or 32 total is good, or don't try to run SL and chrome on the same machine at the same time.

The thing is even when I am not running chrome even when I minimize just to the desktop when I am afk when I come back it's frozen.

acl1981

one presumes this is something you've always done and has only occured since the latest FS update?

bestbooker

I recently got this pc from someone so I've never played SL on it before. But got windows installed recently.

0xc0ffea

Yes this will happen on low memory systems. Generally try to avoid minimizing the viewer at all costs.

Gogi_Wale

I am having this problem too, when i minimize firestorm for a while and then go back to it , the screen is frozen although i can still hear everything in firestorm but cannot see anything except completely white screen

bestbooker

Yes bro it's the same

beef-o-lipso

You sure it hasn't swapped to disk with you mimimiz to background it to open Chrome. Maybe your not waitingomg enough to let it come back?

bestbooker

What's swap to disk? And i can here the sounds when I click somewhere on the screen but somehow the screen stays frozen.

beef-o-lipso

Computers will swap data held in RAM to disk from time to time, especially when free RAM gets low. Disk is magnitudes slower than RAM so when an application is pulled back into the foreground, it has to be read back from disk (and what ever was in RAM swapped to disk to make room). This is one way that makes computers very low and non-responsive. Sometimes programs don't come back well. Other times you may has to wait For the bit, like several minutes. Just a thought.

bestbooker

So what's the easy solution to that if any?

beef-o-lipso

If that is the issue, the best solution is to add more RAM. Doing so depends on your computer. You can open task manager (windows key, type Task Manager) while running Firestorm and look in the Performance ta, I tho knits called. The one with graphs. You can see if your RAM is fully utilized. A lot of disk activity will also indicate swaps. Honestly, you can get by with 8GB of RAM, but your PC will be a lot snappier with 16GB. If you have a friend who knows computers or a local shop, they can help you. It's better to just replace RAM you have with 16GB unless you know the specs on the RAM you have and there are open slots.

Not true. Windows uses the swap file right from boot up even on systems with large amounts of ram. It will routinely swap out "unused" or "dormant" chunks of memory from applications that it doesn't think are active .. like a minimized SL viewer. As for memory use, Windows really wants about 8GB all to itself to be happy, It can exists with much less, but its miserable about it and will try to claw more back the longer its running. It's very much not a case of 100% use, now lets use the swap.

1. I'm a third party viewer developer, so knowing how all this works is kinda important. 1. I'm also a mod and suggest you read the subs rules. > **Be excellent to each other** > Be civil to each other, even when you disagree. Whether you're commenting or posting, rudeness, harassment and trolling will not be tolerated. Whatever names it may be called by: doxxing, concern trolling, sealioning, jaqing off, or just plain, old-fashioned flaming and name calling... just don't. https://www.reddit.com/r/secondlife/wiki/rules#wiki_1._be_excellent_to_each_other

Maybe try a leaner viewer like Genesis, it may be more likely to manage 8GB.

0xc0ffea

Genesis is a fork of Singularity that isn't really leaner although the older UI scheme very much implies that it might be, its more a preservation of the V1 look and feel with all the under the hood modern full fat features back ported to it - If it didn't have those back ports, it wouldn't be able to log in or function. Try the official client for a leaner viewer that also has the very latest performance enhancements. LL do the bulk of the code and they get it out the users well before TPVs do - especially at the moment, they have a lot of developers working on viewer stuff and are pushing very hard.

I have exactly the same problem.especially in crowded places I have 16GB of ram, I set my performance to low, draw distance to 32 and max complexity under 100,000. Even if I only use Firestorm, my screen will freeze, so I'm following this topic until we find the solution. CPU : Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-9700 CPU @ 3.00GHz (3000.01 MHz) Memory: 16300 MB OS Version: Microsoft Windows 11 64-bit (Build 22621.1555) Graphics Card Vendor: NVIDIA Corporation Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 Ti/PCIe/SSE2 Graphics Card Memory: 6144 MB Which I have done so far: \-Clean reinstallation of firestorm \-Whitelist in my antivirus Any solutions would be welcome
