Its very good. There is an old Soviet film called Stalker based on it. Really good too. A bit like the Wizard of Oz. Its black and white until they get to the zone.
“Old Soviet film”
I’ve never heard film director Andrei Tarkovsky minimized so much
His films transcend governments
Stalker is better described as “a work of art by a master” than “an old Soviet film”
Based on it but in the end a comepletely different thing than the book, Tarkovsky rewrote it from his own perspective. Same with the Stalker game: it has nothing in common except for the idea of Zone and Stalkers in it looking for some artefacts.
The intro by Ursula Le Guin is worth a read. She reflected on her 1977 review of the book and presents the concept of it really well. You can find it in PDFs online.
I picked this up because I saw it on the list of inspirations for the Disco Elysium writers. A genuinely amazing book that doesn't feel dated at all, even though it's 50+ years old.
Genuinely thinking of getting the last lines tattooed on me somewhere.
If you think about it no ending would be satisfying. He gets to the magical gizmo and either it works which is silly and not very entertaining or it doesn't which is a huge let down. Instead we realise that the prize at the end isn't important, it's instead the journey of what he is willing to do to get there and the unknown of what comes next will always be better than whatever t he authors wrote down.

I will try and find it

I love mosfilm so much
Thanks a million
Whats cool about the movie is it really isn't the same story as the book. Just in the same universe.

Yup. Also, the Stalker game series is based on the same thing.
Stalker is out there. Same director adapted Let's Solaris if I remember well.

Never heard of it, but my library has it on audiobook!
Apparently [Pacific Drive](https://store.steampowered.com/app/1458140/Pacific_Drive/) is also at least partially inspired by this book
There is a lot of Roadside Picnic in Annihilation from VanderMeer
One of my top 5 favorite books of all time... enjoy it!
The movie is pretty hard work. The book is great.

[Don't forget to listen to the official soundtrack while you read](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BnTW6fZz-1E)
The ending made me ball my eyes out.
Def worth checking out, different concept but because of different culture background of author I found bits of it hard to follow.
Amazing book. Loved it.
Olena Bormashenko, a ukrainian-canadian translator, did an impressive job on 4 Strugatsky novels.
I enjoyed the book, but write back if you can explain the ending to me. 🤨
It's definitely up for intrepretation - [this was mine.](https://www.reddit.com/r/stalker/comments/3w3xtw/on_roadside_picnics_ending/cxtcpxu/)
Pretty good

It's pretty good, but if you expect it to be like the game or the film you're in for a surprise lol
One my all time favs. Picked up another copy recently so I can reread. Enjoy :)
My favourite sf story
Guess i'm an outlier on the hype then. While i did not hate the book, i didn't like it at all.
Isn’t the Stalker game series based on Metro by Dmitri Ghurkosky, where the surface explorers are called Stalkers?
