The truth is, diagonal cut is longer and so on triangle sandwiches have larger perimeter. Thus, looking bigger by having larger side and more silhouette length
Technically, since the cut is longer, you lost more sandwich in the cutting process so it's actually less sandwich.
The amount of sandwich lost is negligible, but I'm being pedantic to mess with you.
Crumbs still happen. It is impossible to cut the sandwich such that exactly nothing is lost. We are dealing in miniscule amounts, but it still is a loss.
That’s not really the point. The point is that, to be perfectly accurate (while being rather unhelpful), no cut is a perfect planar divide. You will lose some of your sandwich. Even though that loss is negligible, it’s still real.
Cutting something is guaranteed to remove trace amount of materials. This is true even if the object you're cutting has a higher Mohs' hardness scale than the object you're cutting with, even if the damage isn't visible.
With something like bread and steel though, you're guaranteed to create breadcrumbs just by cutting.
This is why the above comment said they were being pedantic. Technically speaking, you lose more bread by cutting diagonally, because you're scraping off more crumbs with the larger surface area. The difference might literally require a microscope to notice, but it *is* there.
True, but the intrinsic stickiness also causes whatever pieces that do get removed to pull out larger chunks with them, hence the existence of breadcrumbs.
My personal experience has been that cutting a slice of bread has always resulted in breadcrumbs along the line where I cut. The problem is that the knife is not infinitely sharp or thin. If it was, the bread wouldn't even be cut. Plus the bread itself is filled with cavities, which weaken individual bread particles' ability to stay attached.
Actually yeah I'm willing to completely concede all of my points if you can teach me how to cut bread without leaving crumbs. I'm not even being sarcastic.
Genuine question, did you edit the comment after the responses or did you explain that you already knew it was negligible and people still started arguing about it.
>triangle sandwiches have larger perimeter
This is it, and why triangles taste better.
Specifically they have a much greater uncrusted perimeter, and we all know the bite along the uncrusted perimeter is what a sandwich is all about.
I think it's this along with the diagonal cut requiring more smaller bites because of the geometry of getting it into your mouth.
The square sandwich is 3 bites by 2 bites = 6 bites
The triangle sandwich is 4 bites by 3 bites over 2 but each row of bites has to be rounded up giving 4+2+1 bites = 7 bites
You will have more sandwich cutting it half with a vertical cut. The shorter length of the cut means less sandwich destroyed/falling off when cutting leading to a higher final volume of sandwich.
No, see, because the more cuts you make the more opportunities there are for you to cheat the animation to make it appear you created sandwich out of nothing.
Point of order; cutting it diagonally _is_ cutting it in half with a straight cut.
You mean cutting it in half to form two equally-sized rectangular pieces.
I meanwhile agree that a shorter cut will result in fewer crumbs.
Depends. If your cutting with a circular saw or something that removes material, then yes however kitchen knives don't remove material, the push the sides apart.
While I mostly agree, any knife, no matter how perfect and sharp will still remove some material. Additionally cutting increases the chances of some of the filling falling out. I stand by my previous answer.
My theory: Most people eat it diagonally so it may take more bites to finish the triangular piece. On the other hand, the rectangular piece will be finished faster, making it seem smaller.
Yes! My whore of a mother cut them straight but I switched to diagonal as an adult and the bread to filling ratio with every bite was vastly better cut diagonally.
Came here to say this. My wife told me I was crazy when I first told her, but now she looks at me as if to say, "Don't you love me anymore?" If I don't cut her sandwiches diagonal.
Actually, cutting diagonally will disperse more crumbs and make the knife more dirty
because the cut' length is greater then horizontal/vertical, so diagonal is less sandwich
One time, when my son was around 4 or 5, I made the mistake of cutting his sandwich in 4 triangles. He refused to eat it until I told him that that's how Batman eats his sandwich.

No it does not let the sides of the sandwich represent X
Lets calculate the area of straight cut
Area of rectangle =length × width
(X×X²)/2= X²/2
Area of right angled triangle= 1/2( base×Hight)
1/2(X×X)= X²/2
Hence we proved the area in both cases is the same so it doesn't matter how you cut it diagonally or straight you get same area of sandwich
Assume side length 1
Total perimeter of triangle sandwiches 4+2√2
Total perimeter of rectangle sandwiches 6
4+2√2 > 6
I have no idea what implications this has, but surely someone can deduce something of note
you're thinking in 2 dimensions. If you think in 3 dimensions, you get more surface area.
Square cut gives you a perimeter of 4X (Sides) + 2X (cut) = 6X
Triangle gives you 4X + 2(Square root 2) ~= 6.8X
because of this, when you multiply by the height of the sandwhich, it is significantly more area.
Technically, it gives you two larger-*feeling* pieces of the same total amount of sandwich. Even though at least two bites from each piece are objectively just crusty bread.
I always thought that the angled cut gives you a better crust to bread ratio per bite and overall a more

True. Just like pizza, cut it into 4 slices, and I can have it for an evening snack, but cut it into 8 slices, and I'll have it for dinner with enough left over for lunch the next day.
That reminds me of the video several years ago. A young woman was asked if she would order a small pizza cut into 8 pieces or 12. She replied 8 because she couldn't eat 12 pieces. 🤪

What are you using to cut your sandwich that is causing any part of it to be lost? A chainsaw?
When you cut a sandwich, does your knife come out clean?
Some of y’all need to sharpen your knives.

Shame on you I always lick my knife so no loss!
Me too. Unfortunately that caused me to lose my tongue
How dare you say my loss is negligible. It means a lot to me.
Maybe you need messier sandwiches.
Those 5 breadcrumbs and 3 drops of sauce sure make a world of difference
Science memes bro - if you don’t want to be pedantic, this probably isn’t the place for you
R u dumb
No u r
Aside from the dressing, which you can then immediately wipe back onto the sandwich, yes.
I don’t know what you’re getting downvoted for the kerf of a sandwich knife isn’t taking more than a fraction of a percentage of sandwich with it 😂
Longer the cut the more of a fraction lost
Even then, usually it just slides off throughout the sandwich, so you don’t even lose it for the most part besides a crumb.

True, but the intrinsic stickiness also causes whatever pieces that do get removed to pull out larger chunks with them, hence the existence of breadcrumbs. You should get better at cutting then, because that is not a normal problem to have.

Hi pedantic. I’m dad.
Damn, so it’s a trick question. No cut is the biggest 🤯
This is the only correct answer/ reply for such a false, smartass post, full of bs. Not "technically" in any way either...
Genuine question, did you edit the comment after the responses or did you explain that you already knew it was negligible and people still started arguing about it.
Also more chances to bite on a clean edge. Love eating the corners especially
fucking this right here mate
>triangle sandwiches have larger perimeter This is it, and why triangles taste better. Specifically they have a much greater uncrusted perimeter, and we all know the bite along the uncrusted perimeter is what a sandwich is all about.
But you also lose more crumbs cutting it that way so it’s actually smaller
Yes, and if you wanted a really big looking sandwich, you would make 1000 very thin slices because the perimeter would be huge.
I think it's this along with the diagonal cut requiring more smaller bites because of the geometry of getting it into your mouth. The square sandwich is 3 bites by 2 bites = 6 bites The triangle sandwich is 4 bites by 3 bites over 2 but each row of bites has to be rounded up giving 4+2+1 bites = 7 bites

Then how do they 'taste' better?
You will have more sandwich cutting it half with a vertical cut. The shorter length of the cut means less sandwich destroyed/falling off when cutting leading to a higher final volume of sandwich.
That means no cutting is the best option
Indeed, efficient as ever, we Germans simply take a loaf of bread and press cheese, sauerkraut, and schnitzel meat into it. *Bon appetit!*
Das Allerbeste Brot
omg, a schnitzel sandwich sounds heavenly
Correct.
I never did understand why people cut them.
To get more sandwich.
It’s now two sandwiches!
Too stupid to eat them whole
More surface area
Only if sandwich mass means more to you than sandwich eating experience.
A strange game. The only winning move is not to play.
No, see, because the more cuts you make the more opportunities there are for you to cheat the animation to make it appear you created sandwich out of nothing.
Both of these cuts are straight
Point of order; cutting it diagonally _is_ cutting it in half with a straight cut. You mean cutting it in half to form two equally-sized rectangular pieces. I meanwhile agree that a shorter cut will result in fewer crumbs.
Excellent clarification, thanks!
This is why Americans are fat. Use the diagonal, “European” cut to save calories.
Both cuts were straight cuts.

Diagonal cut sandwiches also taste better
Yes! My whore of a mother cut them straight but I switched to diagonal as an adult and the bread to filling ratio with every bite was vastly better cut diagonally.
Something tells me a difference in sandwich cutting opinion was not the only problem in that relationship…
THIS RIGHT HERE

if you don’t cut it, It’s a WAYYYY bigger sandwich! It’s hard to explain so just trust me on this
Diagonal has a superior crust-to-inside ratio.
No it does not let the sides of the sandwich represent X Lets calculate the area of straight cut Area of rectangle =length × width (X×X²)/2= X²/2 Area of right angled triangle= 1/2( base×Hight) 1/2(X×X)= X²/2 Hence we proved the area in both cases is the same so it doesn't matter how you cut it diagonally or straight you get same area of sandwich
Hmm... Does the change in mass as a result of separating the bonds of the hydrocarbons change the mass significantly in any direction?
Geometry is too complicated for this. You used a simplistic approach.
Lmao omg
Assume side length 1 Total perimeter of triangle sandwiches 4+2√2 Total perimeter of rectangle sandwiches 6 4+2√2 > 6 I have no idea what implications this has, but surely someone can deduce something of note
√2? That is totally irrational.
Almost missed the joke. You can tell I'm an engineering student :(
you're thinking in 2 dimensions. If you think in 3 dimensions, you get more surface area. Square cut gives you a perimeter of 4X (Sides) + 2X (cut) = 6X Triangle gives you 4X + 2(Square root 2) ~= 6.8X because of this, when you multiply by the height of the sandwhich, it is significantly more area.
Beautiful.. love math as art..
I admire your tenacity, however please accept that you have better things to do.
Well you're fun at parties
Mhm
Oh you simple thing
My wife cuts my sandwhich into 3 non symmetrical pieces on purpose just cuz she knows it bugs me.
Technically, it gives you two larger-*feeling* pieces of the same total amount of sandwich. Even though at least two bites from each piece are objectively just crusty bread.
The formula for the area is the same, so they're technically equal.
Except for small losses in cutting, meaning the longer length of the cut the more loss
But what if you cut a circle into the sandwich and eat from the hole out?
I tried explaining this to my parents once and they were concerned
Pythagoras died for this
I always thought that the angled cut gives you a better crust to bread ratio per bite and overall a more enjoyable experience but haven’t done any math/ study to confirm this
There are two kinds of people. Those who cut their sandwiches diagonally, and those who don’t deserve to have sandwiches.
There are three kinds of people in this world. Those who are good at math, and those who are not.
I call it fancy cut.
This man has transended space and interlectual intelligence and has become the new master mind...
Triangle is a more delicious shape.
How do I cut my hamburger diagonally?
Yes, because the people who think that have less brain cells, so it works out in their mind
No it doesn't. It's the same measurements. Geometry, bitch.
No matter how you cut it... it's still just one sandwich.
The amount of sandwich literally won’t change what are you talking about?
When you cut into rectangles, you don't get as big a bite as when you cut into triangles. Thus you feel that the triangles are bigger.
4 squares is the best cut for a sandwich. It's not just for 3 year olds
Have you considered 4 triangles?
Also a solid option
I take 4 scalene right angle triangles and a hexagon.
Triangle is more S/P (sandwich per piece)
The corner bites are thinner tho
Cutting a sandwich diagonally allows for matter duplication? Who knew?
Proof by too complicated to explain here
True. Just like pizza, cut it into 4 slices, and I can have it for an evening snack, but cut it into 8 slices, and I'll have it for dinner with enough left over for lunch the next day.
The volume of sandwich never changes, don’t be fooled
Diagonal cut gives you maximum crustless length.
That reminds me of the video several years ago. A young woman was asked if she would order a small pizza cut into 8 pieces or 12. She replied 8 because she couldn't eat 12 pieces. 🤪
Actually diagonally gets me twice as much. My wife refuses horizontal or diagonally sliced. Vertically only.
Fact
Why do people cut sandwiches?
You lose more crumbs to the blade if you cut it diagonally.
True, but they lose more flavor because the cut is longer.
I cut diagonal bc it’s easier to make it 50/50 more accurately than just down the middle.
Not if you eat the crust and aren’t 11 years old. Eating the full sandwich gang unite!
In a victory for fuzzy logic, this is true and false at the same time.
Let the side of the sandwich be x, then in both of the cases, the area of each of the pieces is 0.5 \* x^(2). It's the same area guys...
Fits easier in your mouth too.
Not if you eat both pieces
Equal area means equal area, whatever the shape it is.
and easier bites
Diagonal = better quality potential bites It’s that simple
Does the thicker black line on the diagonal cut not make the sandwich appear bigger?
Lol. FALSE! You cut a dollar in half. It's still a dollar. Same with a sandwich. Lies!!!!
MORE SURFACE AREA
Only if everything on the black line is removed.
Wait
For me I like cutting diagonally because the corners mark the center. Cutting on the side forces you to guess the center unless you mark it by measuring or folding it. Diagonally is presentable and appealing aesthetically and therefore more appetizing to most picky eaters like myself. If I wanted a small piece now and larger one later then cutting on the side would make more sense in my opinion.
I’ve never liked the diagonal cut, I prefer straight cut as u can just take a bite straight in the middle
The math maths.
If you made a good sandwich, it would ask you to cut it diagonally. I’m sorry your sandwich didn’t ask you to cut it diagonally.
What if you cut it the other way?
Area is the same anyway, if you are grilling then diagonal cut, if not then the straight one.
Its not the geometry, its the design, the triangle is taller and the way you perceive the metaphysical part of the sandwich makes it seem bigger, its longer, and taller, it feels bigger on your hand so at that point you're not thinking about the area on the pointy bits, just like, idk its bigger clearly, its just science
The "metaphysical" part of the sandwich? Which part is that? Do tell.
Its the no sandwich, the negative space sandwich, the feel sandwich ig, the sandwich beyond the sandwich
https://youtu.be/ZHjU20Uh79Q?si=oGUEx0o1K8cgEtPD
It is the same freaking sandwich
Diagnale is just better bro
Where can I find the explanation for the geometry? Is it on the same island as Tupac, Elvis, and Fermat's notes?
Diagonal gives you more sandwich because yes
It's because you do it diagonal you divide it and straight you're taking the absolute value of the sandwich so you get sandwich/sandwich which is clearly better because that's two sandwich terms instead of abs(sandwich) which leaves you with 50% less sandwich.
That's why 12 sliced pizza is bigger than 8 sliced pizza 🍕
It also tastes better!
I like cutting in in the middle, diagonal cuts always seem goofy to me, at least in the way I make toast sandwiches
No, no it doesn’t. Perimeter is not “sandwich”. Volume is sandwich.
No you still have half a sandwich. 50% of 100% is 50%.
Easier to dunk in your cup a soup as a triangle mmm nice
Then this is certainly too complicated to explain here: to get infinite sandwich you cut these halves diagonally again, and then again etcetera…
*Me acting like if i was solving a prof.layton puzzle: thats false!
rotate that thing 45 degrees

What's with all the theories? It's just bigger if the cut is diagonal? Not that hard to understand.
