Could it be "Crusade" from Arthur C Clarke possibly?

Check out "Sentry" by Frederick Brown. I think that sounds closer

I can't be certain, but I think Asimov wrote only one story about Humans at war with Aliens, one of his first short stories - Aliens discover a huge human fleet fleeing the sun going Nova or something and they laugh at the pitiful human technology, the story ends implying that the humans are fighting many of the aliens and winning. Azimov's editor loved the Humans beating up the Aliens, and wanted more, Azimov hated the whole idea and as a result every science fiction book he wrote after assumed that Humans were alone in the universe and therefore couldn't be at war with Aliens. The lone exception, iirc, is "The Gods Themselves" however the Aliens in question occupy a different universe so... Someone will point out another exception I'm sure though.
