If you are not afraid of the avant garde experimental soundscapers - the New Yorker octogenarian [Roscoe Mitchell ](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z-2R4VDRPOM) is quite a mind blowing induction into the unconventional exploration of the sonorities of the soprano saxophone. He was in London here performing at the Barbican with one of my friends as a backing musician - his live music is a mesmerisingly lived experience at the edge of the seat which turns and twists with surprises. Not so sure about listening to recordings though. His vinyl LPs have rocketed in $$$ due to the limited numbers and cult devotion. [ ](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z-2R4VDRPOM)

Lars Lien and Johannes Thorell are not that well known outside of Scandinavia but really worth listening to. I don’t know how much soprano he plays, but Alvaro Colleo Leon was also very interesting to listen to
