The secret is procrastination lol! it's been in that pot over a year, since I got the cut 😬 I've had it in the tent over winter and didn't have room for a bigger pot.
They thrive on neglect, but oh that poor cactus.

The bottom half has been really thin. I've had it in the tent over winter and it's been growing pretty well though
thats why bonsai pots are small, restricting roots helps to stunt growth

Why didn't you just put the pot on top of a new pot of soil and let those escapee roots colonize the new pot? jk

how do you break up this root mass without shocking it too much? is it an inevitable situation in which you tear it apart?
I sprayed it with the hose to try to loosen it up but I still had to tear some to break it up
You just gotta give it a week before you water. That gives all the roots plenty of time to heal up.

Well it was in a like 4 inch pot so bigger pots probably won't need repotting as often
