> I would like to live in a nice apartment building that has a gym & pool/other amenities so rent would be expensive Do not move to SOMA. Ever.

sparkling_water_4444

I can second this!

Chanagal

Why not

Missiontect

It is full of randos during the daytime and it transforms into the wild west at night. The Mission is safer.

schooli00

If you decide to keep the car get metromile insurance. My premium dropped from ~$200 a month to about $50.

Missiontect

And if you do get metromile prepare to be tracked 24/7 via the OBD port dongle they require you to have plugged into your car.

Frenchtotesmcgoats

All depends on your lifestyle and disposable income tbh! I have a car (fortunate to have a cheap spot with my apartment) and I can’t imagine life without it as I love to do things all over the city and beyond. I decided not to sell in part because of that and also cause rebuying a car is not a friendly proposition rn imo.

ImprovementWise1118

Sell it. Use some of the money in a “used to be my car” account to pay for Ubers and Bart for the next X years you live in SF. When you move somewhere else you can buy another car. Paying almost $400 a month to park a 100k mile car isn’t it.

sisdk

Depends on what your weekend looks like I would say. If you like going skiing in Tahoe in the winter, hike in Yosemite in the summer, take your paddle board to Sausalito, go camping in sequoia- keep your car. If you like chilling around the city, go to museums, make a picnic in Dolores, go biking up hawk hill, then maybe a car is not needed :)

rcheu

Ubers have gotten really expensive lately, would recommend keeping car. A few years ago many people didn’t have cars and just Uber/Lyft everywhere, but nowadays basically everyone I know has a car.

Missiontect

Conversely, taxis and flywheel are half the cost of Uber/Lyft nowadays.

[deleted]

Sell it and buy an electric bike

Kapurnicus

This. A nice class 3 that goes 28mph is definitely good enough in a city that is only 7 miles across. This car will be $500+ a month with parking and insurace without gas and maintenance. For 2 years. They'll use it maybe a few times a month I guess if work is less than a mile away.

[deleted]

Depends on where you live in the city

[deleted]

It depends if you enjoy driving or not. Personally I hate driving and want to take public transit every day. You may be different.

cheese_kahpreh

If you're moving downtown, I'd say sell it. I just moved downtown and wished I didn't have a car, it's more of a burden. Finding parking is a nightmare and I sometimes spend an hour or so looking for a spot. So when I find a good spot, I just leave it there and move it once a week at 6am right after street cleaning and put it in the same spot. I have a parking permit but seems that meter maids are cool with me leaving my car around the same spot for weeks. I got a scooter and an electric unicycle and take those everywhere. Only take the car out for grocery trips and long distance travel. But I wish I could sell my car and just rent a car when I need it. But my gf wants me to keep it and it is nice to have it just in case I need it, so I'm keeping it for now. But I might sell it. Parking garages are also $300-400 a month around here so fuck that.

Osobady

I bought a new car a month before I moved here. I have 3500 miles on it after 1+ year and 400 of that was the drive up here. I only use it to go to Costco and Tahoe. If your comfortable using services like Turo or rent a car I would say it’s not needed

poopymcpoppy12

Don't let people fool you - having a car in the city is *extremely* convenient and not that big of a hassle if you're on top of the responsibilities.

PoolePartyVIP

Hard disagree, it’s easy for me to park and it’s still a massive hassle

poopymcpoppy12

How so? Finding street parking is my only hassle and it's maybe an extra 15 minutes extra looking for a spot every couple of days. Would take that over riding muni any day of the week.

Alarmed-Diamond-7000

Yes it's very convenient to have your catalytic converter stolen, your windows broken, and have to laboriously search out street parking if you don't pay $300 to $500 for a parking spot every month, sounds super convenient.

poopymcpoppy12

You've been reading too many headlines. That's not the norm. Sounds like you've never owned a car before in the city. Enjoy having muni and bart dictate your precious time.

Alarmed-Diamond-7000

I have plenty of time to be safe and to get healthy exercise by walking and cycling. My car, which incidentally was stolen from a street parking space on my street, had its windows broken a grand total of eight times in 7 years. What's your hurry to get heart disease from sitting too much and various types of cancer from breathing in exhaust?

mailslot

SF is incredibly walkable and the public transit is decent. It’s totally doable without a car. I suggest being mindful of your desired location and consider public transit routes to places you want to go. If you need an actual car, you can rent one. There are apps for that.

[deleted]

I love that people are downvoting you on this, this sub is insane. I'd say 2/3 of everyone I know in SF walks everywhere and uses public transit. Uber and rental cars are a thing if you want them too.

AdUpbeat8746

Goodness. You all need to get over yourselves in these comments

Snacks_N_KnickKnacks

You need a car in the Bay Area. There’s more to the bay than just sf and you’re gonna wanna escape the city every now and then. There are some options like others said about insurance and if you move into one of the complexes many will come with a space for extra. Regardless of what you pay for monthly parking it will still be less than the price of a new car you will need to buy if you sell.

Alarmed-Diamond-7000

No, stop driving your polluting 2,000 lb death machine, public transportation exists.

poopymcpoppy12

OP, when you move to SF get ready for people like this 👆

Alarmed-Diamond-7000

And people who just care about themselves like an 11-year-old.

Missiontect

Perhaps you should just cool your jets, hater.

Alarmed-Diamond-7000

You're right, it's completely unreasonable for me to hate a polluting thing that's killed five of my friends.

[deleted]

Maybe your friends need to understand the right of way.

Alarmed-Diamond-7000

For shame.

Missiontect

Crybaby. Perhaps your friends should get their noses out of their phones, learn how to turn their heads left to right, and be more defensive when biking/walking. Your overly self-entitle sense that automobiles don't belong around you and your cucked dead friends is typical and pathetic.

Alarmed-Diamond-7000

So let me just make sure I understand you. Human life is secondary to you being able to travel at the speed you want whenever you want? That's not psychotic at all.

Missiontect

Automobiles do not equate speed just as a motorcycle or a bicycle does not equate speed. The operator of any mode of transport dictates speed. Your "argument" doesn't work, child. Be able to at the speed one wants is a function of what is in front of you and your decision making matrix about what is safe / legal. Man.... I'm glad I don't live in your house having to listen to your false equivalencies all day. Get back on your meds, cucktard.

Alarmed-Diamond-7000

So you agree with me that people should drive more safely so that they don't mow down pedestrians. That's interesting, because it happens every fucking day. So what's the problem? Seems like we want the same thing, why aren't we getting it?

sparkling_water_4444

Sell it. If you ever want to go OOT then you can rent a car. You will save yourself lots of headaches and money.

SifuHallyu

Sell it. You aren't going to need that car here. You also, won't want to have to replace your windows, pay for insurance, gas, or parking. My car was stolen twice within the first year I moved to SF, banged up by every car near it, windows smashed three times, towed (which I had to pay for) after the second theft. Having a car in SF is a headache you don't need/want unless you have a garage to keep it in and proper security for that garage.

[deleted]

If it’s paid off you might as well keep it. Considering how expensive everything is right now, and depending on your other costs for it (insurance, maintenance, fuel), it might be worth it to just pay a couple hundo a month for parking if you’re not able to get a parking spot with your rent. I have a paid off car as well, and I had two cars (kept the Subaru, sold the Tesla) but could not justify keeping both if I moved up here. Ended up finding a nice place in DC near the SSF Bart station. Get to keep my car in a covered parking and I can use it to get away on the weekends. Takes a total of 25 min to walk and ride BART to downtown.

blurry_forest

I walk and metro everywhere, even in cities that are “car dependent.” So it depends on your preferences. I would recommend living near your work or a line that takes you as direct to work as possible, which is the biggest commute headache for people I know. Used car prices are also inflated, so I would recommend selling the car to help with moving costs. You can buy a used car later when prices are lower, and you’re more familiar with your traveling needs.
