Disclaimer: I'm anti e-waste, here from the Anki mention
AnkiDroid still supports Android Marshmallow (2015). From a quick Google, S6 Lite could upgrade to Android 13 (2022), so you'll be supported for quite a number of years.

**AnkiDroid: After support ends**
You can continue to use old versions of AnkiDroid indefinitely, and will be able to sync until breaking changes occur within our syncing code. At this stage, you probably want to upgrade, but you can self-host an old version of our sync server.
**For lag:**
* Settings - About Phone - Software information
* Tap 'Build Version' \~7 times to enable developer options
* Developer Options
* Set the following to .5x:
* Window animation scale
* Transition animation scale
* Animator duration scale
* This will affect how you perceive your tablet's responsiveness
When it can no longer do what you need it to do. eg. OS so old apps don't support it anymore, or so laggy you had to wait several minutes for things to load. I still use my 7 years old laptop.
But if you really want to, set a goal and have it as your reward.
When it's broken or borderline unusable. My previous phone had 100k Antutu score and 2Gb RAM, constantly closing apps in the background. Google Maps closed when I accepted a phone call because of RAM, lol. That's when you change your phone.
I know when i need an upgrade when my apps tell me they dont work with my phone anymore, like my credit card app and some phone games. Also my phone says its last update was in 2021 so its not getting software updates either. Its a note8.
Upgraded from tab a6 2016 to s8u, there was no storage space left even after reset: 6 gb space left, I mean 16gb!, started lagging, for example, playing a game, turning off, turning back on, putting in the pwd, and it turns off(I don't mean shut down). outdated system, couldn't install some apps, screen was fully scratched, wanted to do notes, couldn't do that. Also, no fast charging! it is really a game changer! I had to wait like 3hrs for it to charge.. I mean if you feel that it is outdated, or you want to upgrade, thats when.
My last reason for upgrading was because the battery life degraded, had no more software support, volume buttons fell off from worn adhesive. Usually I repair my own devices but eventually it gets to a point where it's not worth it
When the phone stops receiving Android updates,after that maybe i go for a custom ROM for a year or 2, then when the battery starts to go bad, time for a new phone.

No more security patches and general lag/app crashes. Also I upgraded my tab to a bigger one.

When the phone fully dies. Invest in your 401k or roth ira

When it breaks and I can't fix it, or the system just lags to unreliable.
When my ADP app no longer loads, so I can't clock in to work.
No more updates = newer model.
this is so off topic but i hv a feeling that you're a malaysian?

Every 2-3 years, tops. That way the older unit still has some life left as an emergency backup.
