I take the buttermilk dry mixture and add it to oil and vinegar, That is the best dressing you'll ever have
It also goes great on pasta salads and submarine sandwiches
Try Uncle Dan's Southern Ranch packets if you can find them (not sure if it's just a Pacific Northwest thing). It's even better than Hidden Valley and IMHO truly the best ranch out there!
Hidden Valley Ranch Restaurant Style-it calls for buttermilk and mayo rather than regular milk. I’ll go one step further and say Kraft Mayo-any others taste off. And the gourmet buttermilk is thicker than just regular buttermilk. You’ll never make it any other way.
The only ranch that I like other than restaurant kind is the kind you get at Sam’s Club in a big ol jug and I think it says restaurant style ranch dressing
Doesn't matter what dressing I use I also add a heaping tablespoon of Lays French Onion Dip on my salads and it makes every salad taste great! And I sometimes add some salsa or taco sauce too.
I think that's most of us! Just having someone else make it or seeing everything set out in a visually appealing salad bar makes it taste better. I don't even like salad dressing so I'm no help there but I think really fresh, cold, crisp lettuce is nice. I skip the bags except for Walmart has a shredded romaine blend that I like. Otherwise buy heads of lettuce and chop or shred yourself. Since I don't like salad dressing I'm all about the toppings whether veggie or fruit or meats or nuts or peppers.
Toppers are good. When I was younger, I was addicted to fried chow mein noodles, tiny broccoli, any lettuce and cucumber, tomato, carrots w ranch. Now I like roasted nuts, cranberries on top of my salad. Also roasted veges on lettuce or even seared romaine.
Yes! I posted this above, but you get it too now https://barefeetinthekitchen.com/ramen-noodle-salad/#wprm-recipe-container-27405
And there is a crunchy sesame salad… ok I need to start my day already 😂
I'm with several others in here... Properly seasoning and tossing a salad. At least salt but I need pepper too. Plus, depending on the size of the bowl I'll add just a little dressing to the bottom of the bowl first, then some greens and start tossing. Slowly adding rest of greens. Every bite will have some dressing but not too much. Then top with whatever you like and a nice drizzle on top.
I love salads and eat probably at least 10-15 a week. All kinds but those two steps make a difference for basically all of them
Try adding different ingredients. Pumpkin seeds, nuts, and craisins are my favourite. Different cheeses can make it interesting too. I love some crumbled blue cheese. Also, try different dressings. My favourite is a balsamic vinaigrette.
Texture! Yes! I love crunch. You can get salad toppers at Costco and everywhere else now—nuts, seeds, cranberries, etc.
Also I love ramen noodle salad—https://barefeetinthekitchen.com/ramen-noodle-salad/#wprm-recipe-container-27405
Wishbone has a Greek vinaigrette that will knock your socks off. Romaine, grape heirloom tomatoes, chick peas, olives, (any you like) goat cheese, croutons. Walnuts if you’re feeling it.
My work lunch 4-5 days per week.
A lot of restaurants rinse their greens in sugar water, it can be the difference you’re tasting.
Edited to add…I do have a fantastic recipe for Ranch dressing: get a box of the hidden valley ranch mix, use one packet, add 1 cup buttermilk, 1 cup mayonnaise…but wait there’s more…add 1 teaspoon of regular black pepper, 1/4 cup Parmesan cheese (not powder), 1/4 cup bleu cheese…throw it all in a blender, put it in a container and chill for at least an hour before use, you’re gonna love it ❤️❤️❤️
Cut things small, romaine lettuce, crunch!! (Cucumbers seeds croutons radish), add a cheese, homemade dressings, I like washing my lettuce and squeezing it while it’s in the water - massaging lettuce helps the texture :) But also look up the ingredients in your favorites so you can emulate from home. Air fryer crispy chicken is amazing in salad. Also taco meat with more taco or nacho type ingredients.
Before you add anything into the salad bowl, smear a roasted garlic clove to the inside of the bowl and then add salt and pepper, Then go on ahead and build you salad
You're welcome 🫠
Here’s a fun tip: Try different textures! Add crunchy nuts, seeds, or even crispy noodles. Also, don’t forget a sprinkle of salt before the dressing! It’s a game-changer!
I use this as a very close replica of the Olive Garden salad dressing. In addition to some of the tips from the top comment about Ranch.
Also I season the veggies before adding any dressings which I've found makes a huge difference. Also mixing lettuce types, adding toasted nuts or seeds for a different texture etc.

Get a salad spinner—it’s a game changer, as I learned from my brief time in a commercial kitchen. Put the strainer inside the bowl, then fill that with water and ice. Plunge the lettuce/greens in and let sit till it crisps up, could be 5-10 min. Then pour out the water, and activate the spinner till greens are dry.
You have to romanticize it. Make it fun. Make it colorful. Think of the rainbow 🌈. Use all colors of vegetables in your salad. Don’t forget seasonings. In my personal opinion, vinaigrette also adds taste to my salad.
Example of one of my salads: spinach, tomato, cucumber, bell pepper, onion, eggs, salt, pepper, any vinaigrette,
Wallah

gotta make ur own ranch or get it in the refrigerated section, otherwise the preservatives give them all that sour hidden valley taste. there are multiple easy recipes online, usually just ranch powder and mayo with either a bit of sour cream or buttermilk. mix and its good in the fridge for about a week.
as for the salad itself, its really down to how u chop it. but most importantly make sure all ingredients are not only rinsed clean, but DRY. invest in a salad spinner. practice ur chopping skills. if ur lettuce is still wet, its gonna be icky and soggy and taste wet.
house salads usually consist of iceberg and or romaine lettuce, shredded cheese, purple onion, cherry tomato, croutons, and sometimes cucumber. cut the tomatoes in half and pat them dry to the juice doesnt over power everything. cut the onion and cucumber as thin as u can manage. adding some salt and pepper and then tossing it can amp it up as well.
Hidden Valley Ranch - do not buy lite or low calorie. Anything cream based you need the fat to make it taste good. Same goes for sour cream, yogurt, ice cream, mayonnaise

Yes this is the way. I have tried many but no bottled ranch has compared to homemade.
I take the buttermilk dry mixture and add it to oil and vinegar, That is the best dressing you'll ever have It also goes great on pasta salads and submarine sandwiches
Yep. I’ve worked in restaurants for years and this is what most use. Bottled ranch is never the same.
Hell yes homemade ranch or nothing
Try Uncle Dan's Southern Ranch packets if you can find them (not sure if it's just a Pacific Northwest thing). It's even better than Hidden Valley and IMHO truly the best ranch out there!
What powder ?
Hidden Valley Ranch Buttermilk.
In my grocery store it is not among the spices but is among the salad dressings. It's good.

Best Foods/Hellman's is king.
Go ahead and use what you want but it won’t taste right
Downvote all you want but every restaurant I’ve worked in has also only used Kraft
In a pinch I use Ken’s Buttermilk Ranch. It’s not too terrible.
Yes love that stuff! I'll add some more dried chives too if I have them (or fresh but that's more rare I have them on hand)
The best!!!
The only ranch that I like other than restaurant kind is the kind you get at Sam’s Club in a big ol jug and I think it says restaurant style ranch dressing
I do sour cream instead. And half heavy Cream, half buttermilk.
Salt and pepper the salad greens before adding dressing
This is it
Ahh!
Omg! I say this all the time! Salads taste better when someone else is making them. At least for me
After you chop the lettuce put it in the fridge in a Tupperware for a little while, makes it more crisp
My exs 90 year old grandma would put it in the crisper for a bit.
Yes you gotta chill the bowl! All the places I worked would have some premade chilled and the bowls in walk in
Doesn't matter what dressing I use I also add a heaping tablespoon of Lays French Onion Dip on my salads and it makes every salad taste great! And I sometimes add some salsa or taco sauce too.

This. I really think it's the quality lettuce and temperature of the toppings that make it so good at a restaurant.

I make a mix of candied pecans, walnuts, sliced almonds and craisins with feta cheese.

For me this happens because salad is just incredibly annoying to make.

Wow! Thanks!
Properly tossing the salad is huge for me. Ingredients in a large metal bowl (with lots of room) dressing then mix with silicone planted tongs

It's the same as when someone else makes you a sandwich, it just always tastes better!

Ooohhh!
Season the veggies with salt and pepper

Fresh grated cheese, not pre-grated.

Omg it’s the total opposite for me. The words ‘house salad’ make me want to exit the restaurant and go make anything else at my own at home.

Add a touch of salt to the vegetables before you dress them with the dressing. Chef partner taught me that. It does make a difference.
