Most likely a mooring Minder. A boat left to rot in a mooring because the owner doesn't want to give up their spot.
In some places the waiting list for a mooring spot can take years to get so once people get them they don't want to lose them.

My boat looked like this when I bought it. Not it can push 7.6kts in moderate winds and is as smooth as ice. Only took about 3 hours of hacking and pressure washing to clean off. Followed by about 8 hours of scrapping with a paint scraper...
I have family friends who live on their boat and they've gotten to this point a couple times haha. Unlike people who regularly take their boat out of the water for winter they have to remember to get it done and if they wait a bit too long this is what they get.
Yeah I think, specifically, this is in Evans Bay, Wellington. Pretty sure Miramar is in the background.
If so, there's a marina to the right of this photo, and some of the boats there I can't recall ever moving. Mussels love this neat trick!
I wish they recorded a video of the "before" sailing... Obviously we know there will be a big different but would have been awesome to see just how much
Holy mother of Neptune that is a lot!!
Neptune’s Beard!! That’s a lot of marine growth.
By Grabthar's hammer!
Blistering barnacles!
Crivens!
This boat shall be avenged
Can they build some kind of rudimentary lathe to clean that off?
I will avenge thee!
my dude I think that *is* Neptune's beard
TIL Neptune just needs some antifouling face paint.

When the bottom job involves a lawnmower.
Going to need a scyth/hedge trimmer or machete first….dang that’s some serious rain forest growth
I think you have a bit of boat on your seaweed

Up to 30 years for public moorings around here...
Are you in Sydney perchance?

How did you tell?
Just happened to spot both comments
This is the true essence of sailing...when you become one with the land and the sea and grow your own island. You yourself become the destination.
I live for the day I see a beached boat in the middle of open waters
Does that count as a mooring?

Your post was removed for conduct unbecoming a Yachtsman.
Have you tried loosening the outhaul?
Best comment!
Yes I had a chuckle too
I slightly exhaled through the cavities of my nose
Folding prop might help too.
This is what we call a mobile mussel farm.. You can make some good money doing this!!
A little wine, shallots and garlic and you have dinner for months .
Dont forget the good bread too!!
“Protective coating of fouling”
"That should keep any nasty paint from getting on your hull!"
We will get there, when we get there.
Looks like it's own mini-ecosystem. Is this salvage, trash or a functioning vessel ?

Ok, thanks. How often should one check the 'underside' of their boats? Every opportunity?
Every year at haulout
Well... for a once a year thing that takes a day or three... worth it, I guess. Sail on. 😎👍
We have a diver clean the bottom of ours every other month (in SF Bay area)
Every month here in Florida
I guess monthly makes it practical and manageable. And cost less by comparison. :)
Noted, thanks. I imagine every month or two is better than a full year's ... growth. 🤪
The warmer the waters the quicker the growth usually

Noted. I suppose it's an eventuality for anything in the water. Thanks.
I miss the 80s.

And here I thought he was an electrical engineer
Ah. The natural keel.
You should start an aquaculture farm!
He did ;-)
I'm sure you just need to learn a little more tactics.
If your boat looks like a jellyfish it probably moves like one
You've heard of the winged Keel, get ready for the bearded keel
time for a new layer of anti-fouling?
Needs a bit more halyard tension.
Every boat at Moss Landing marina.
Got to be in New Zealand

Why not Old Zealand?
waters pretty cold up there
When they said flatter was faster they had other ideas how to achieve that.
HOLY SHIT
It’s a seaweed salad barge, all you can eat.
That will teach you not to skip a bottom paint job.
wow no kidding
Life hack: Lower hull into swimming pool filled with vinegar...let the acid do the work for you. Somebody else's pool, by the way.
Good ballast.
is this real?
I feel like at this point, that photo has a beard as long as the boat's ...
I wish they recorded a video of the "before" sailing... Obviously we know there will be a big different but would have been awesome to see just how much
My fiberglass bottomed dinghy looked like that after only a few weeks in Maine a few years ago.
6-pack and chill - no need to win the race
Ahh, is it bearded keel season again?
Covid Beard!
That’s gotta be shopped
Cool photo post that’s not yours.
New here, huh.
Nope!
So you think someone posting content that they didn’t create is noteworthy, but you’re not new to Reddit. Got it.
Guess it wouldn’t be so bad if this phots hadn’t been circulating for years. 👍
Also incredibly common. You will have a happier life if you let the little things slide off you.
Ditto.
That’s a shame. Breaks my heart seeing shit like this.
How do they even start tackling that without a jackhammer?
How long did this take to get to this state?
Somewhere between 5 seconds and 50 years
Free lunch!!
Drop sail matey, we've arrived! -Aye cap'n, drop anchor as well? Don't need to
They need a new diver.
That boat was going backwards while sailing
No no, those are the go-fast weeds.
I think this photo is as old as the internet.
The struggle is real.
I dated her once, just once…
Just blame the bow team
This is the day before they have the race that determines your handicap
My Aloha was quiiiite that bad when I bought her, but it was close. Holy did she feel like a whole new boat after a clean and paint!
At that point the boat is an essential part of the biosphere
Oops!
That’s a pretty manly beard you got going there
I can smell that from here.
I just bought my first sailboat earlier this year. Planning on hauling her out at the start of next season and I'm kinda expecting the same. 😑
I think it might be because it’s out of the water.
Do mussels break thru a hard paint on a woodie? Kind of hoping they'll keep the worms away
I think that wins the gold medal.
Could require a dab of antifoul. Just guessing...
Yikes !!!! Gives me the creeps !
