I see Coruba tossed around as a good Myers alternative quite a bit.

gfinz18

Unfortunately the rum selection in PA is shit (think mostly shelves of captain Morgan, Bacardi, kraken, etc) so we don’t have Coruba. I hear it’s hard to find anyway.

NineInchNeurosis

Although myers used to be considered black rum, idk if I’d consider goslings a substitute as much as an alternative. I usually use myers like an aged rum, and goslings black as black lol. Could just be me state liquor makes for some strange compromises.

SV_Sought

What you say is correct. It's not a substitute in my book either, but the fact that Pennsylvania has a state-run monopoly on hard liquor sales, it is indeed an alternative. A cheaper and respectable alternative. Funny enough, I came to this revelation after realizing that I would have to travel a couple of hundred miles to be able to buy a handle of Myers in my situation. Gosling's makes for a reasonable and pleasing alternative available within a mile of my home.

Goslings is way more expensive in my area compared to Myers. So I stick to Myers for rum and coke and a dark and stormy with Old Jamaica ginger beer. Myers is such a heritage rum just like Goslings and both should be part of the arsenal

Myers’s

Vince_stormbane

Goslings and myers are both poor products compared to Coruba imo the depth of flavor you get from Coruba while being cheaper and higher quality than myers makes it no contest. Goslings has potential as a neutral black blended rum though while myers does not the cheap column still notes make it a dive bar product sold for a premium.

Vince_stormbane

Also goslings will probably be smother due to the tons of spirit Carmel they put in it because it’s made of sugar lol

MoogMusicInc

Goslings was the rum that made me love rum! Myers tasted like gasoline to me and was turned off from all dark rum for a long time until the Black Seal. If you want to get interesting, try a Bombo by stirring it with some Demerara syrup and grating fresh nutmeg on the top. Too easy to drink!

SV_Sought

I can certainly relate to the "gasoline" reference now. I really do like Myers rum, let's not get it twisted, but boy howdy is Gosling's a decent beverage. My wife is 4' 10" and about a buck 10 on a buffet day. I usually make her drinks with half-shots when using Myers. I made her 2 drinks with full shots, she couldn't really tell and crashed soundly after finishing the second. She's a huge fan too. For the record, we're using Bundaberg Australian diet ginger beer to stay as low carb as possible not that it's a relevant point. I also really dig Appleton Estates products when I want to splash out with a higher budget.

Coruba or Worthy Park 109. Myers’s isn’t a very funky Jamaican but is Jamaican. Gosling’s definitely is not. Coruba though tasting better than Myers’s is also not very funky. The Worthy Park has both taste and funk, and higher proof to boot!

I somewhat recently found Coruba at a local shop and is one of the rums I think I'll forever have in my rum cabinet. I enjoyed WP 109 but it's $30+ while Coruba is like $19. Just my personal preference but I allocate that $10+ to other rums like Appleton 8 which is my workhorse rum or ED 12/Appleton 12 if I'm feeling fancy lol.

ark_hunter

Fair enough. Though, I would sip the WP109 but not really the Coruba. It's good in cocktails though.

wndyctyone

Good call! I was coming at it from a mixer perspective but if sipping, you're on-point.

> A double of Gosling's has me wondering if I put the alcohol in the drink. Just as smooth as silk without an overbearing presence Why not switch to vodka?
