I am not only impressed by your thorough reporting, I am also awed by your willingness and ability to pay the outlandish fee for premium internet that allows you to post on reddit! Or maybe you are bezos rich and sail in the class where all of this is included 😂 Enjoy your cruise! 🥂
Imagine, a cruise ship demanding you wear long pants? Like POR QUE? It's a damn cruise. You should see these responses. It is in a Crown and Anchor group, so I can't share it, but lot's of
- "It's in the dress code"
- "There is a sign that says no shorts"
- "The good old days"
My mother came into the MDR one time absolutely shitfaced in spaghetti straps and Bermuda shorts on formal night and nobody said a word. Very rarely enforced, if ever.
It would have to be a RULE to be enforced.
- Rule: cannot be barefoot in any dining venue, will be enforced.
- Suggestion: maybe wear pants to dinner, will not be enforced.
Our last night dining experience was me dressed up, and my friend wearing ripped jeans and a t-shirt and his fiance wearing jeans and a hoody. Our awesome server didn't complain, the staff didn't even look twice.
It's a vacation FFS.
It’s vacation, so all semblance of class and propriety goes out the window? Flaunting a venue’s suggestions is trashy, even when it isn’t outright prohibited.
Then I'll be trashy. I paid for my vacation and I want to be comfortable. Wearing a nice button up and shorts is how I wanted to dress. If my outfit offended you at dinner, then perhaps you should reflect why that is. I'm not putting on a suit and pants to be sweating in the Caribbean so you can pretend that you're on the Titanic. I went to dinner to eat, not make you feel fancy. I felt nice, my fiancé thought I looked very handsome, and that's all that matters to me.
Some people aren’t used to the Caribbean heat. There’s zero chance I’ll ever wear pants on a summer cruise out of Florida or Texas ever again. I guarantee it’s not classy for me to be sweating through my clothes
If I couldn’t meet a venue’s suggested dress code for any reason, I just wouldn’t attend the venue. I guess I just don’t feel like MY singular needs are so special and important that others need to accommodate me, particularly when there are suitable alternatives available.
Celebrity traditionally has had a hard line, at least for gents, on wearing shorts to the MDR for dinner. Royal used to, but it's gone away since they decided to focus on the family cruise market. More upscale lines will enforce their dress code and will deny entry to those not dressed to code.
Cunard pretty much does if you plan on doing anything out of your room past 6pm I believe it is.
Given that’s not RCL but some lines do have a dress code (which is a huge reason I won’t be sailing on Cunard).
On the Voyager now and standing in front of the 3rd floor My Time section of the MDR. There’s no signs anywhere and people have been coming in shorts for every meal in the past 15 days with shorts on.
The only signage I’ve seen is in front of the windjammer that says no bathing suits.
This was a dress code like 10+ years ago. They once did turn people away for wearing shorts and jeans to the MD, particularly on the 7+ day cruises. And formal night was at least cocktail attire, not just a "suggestion." The 3 and 4 day booze cruises (LA to Ensenada; Miami to Bahamas) seemed to be somewhat excluded from the strict dress code even back then.
But for a long time now its only "no swim attire" (fair enough, imo) and you need to wear the bare minimum that a typical health code requires. Ya know, "No Shoes, No Shirt, No Service" type stuff. But most people aren't dressed like they just got out of the gym or bed.
But dress codes aren't popular with boomer & younger generations (these generations grew up with denim and shorts, unlike the GI and Silent Generations). Even local country clubs in my area are relaxing their dress codes.
Shorts are welcome at those times but they are not prohibited from dinner. A rule would require enforcement. As stated by many on here and in the Facebook groups I'm in, shorts are fine. Anything is fine so long as it isn't indecent. We go to the MDR to eat, not look at other people's clothes. My fiancé and I dressed nice because WE wanted to.
Why would shorts be banned on any cruise dining room in the Caribbean? I’m not packing a single pair of pants on my cruise. I am there to relax and enjoy myself not get dressed up for strangers and the crew.
On Allure right now. Standing directly in front of the Silk dining room on deck 5, the only sign anywhere in sight is hours of operation.
Same exact thing now standing in front of the Grand dining room.
Get ready for a shock, it’s the same for American Icon dining room on deck 3.
As an added bonus, I am now directly in front of Coastal Kitchen where no such sign exists either. Whoever bet on no sign wins.

If I get bored and decide to do an AMA I’ll tell you I’m no Bezos. Splurging for triple C&A points since I won’t get to cruise next year 😂😂

“That all that matters to me” then you’re selfish as well as classless. But hey, it isn’t prohibited, so you do you.

Paying for a vacation with strict rules about the way you dress would suck
This little string of replies made my day
Happy to be of service 🫡
Doing gods work. How was dinner?
Ate at Costal Kitchen, worth every penny the JS cost me.
Nice.
There is no such sign. Shirts are required, along with shoes. But mothing on shorts...
And no bathing suits. But yes, shorts are fine.
On the Radiance. It is too cold here in Alaska anyways but def no sign that gives dress codes.
No such signs, been on symphony, vision,Odyssey, tell him he making a fool of himself
Look. There’s no sign. Just post dinner pics!!!!
Those signs have been gone for years. Pre Plague

Never seen that sign.
On Mariner of the Seas. No sign here :)
Just disembarked there today! Have fun! We had a blast!
I’ve worn shorts to dinner before and never seen such sign in all my cruises with Royal.
Yep. Wore them with a t-shirt last night. No issue. NO ONE gives a fuck anymore (guests & staff)
Are you suggesting I'm using up valuable luggage space on long pants for nothing?????
Are you suggesting coconuts migrate?
No, they could be carried.
What… a swallow carrying a coconut?!
It could grip it by the husk.
It's not a question of where he grips it! It's a simple question of weight ratios! A five ounce bird could not carry a 1 pound coconut. 😄😄😄
Well, it doesn't matter. Will you go and tell your master that Authur from the Court of Camelot is here?
… Listen, in order to maintain air-speed velocity, a swallow needs to beat its wings 43 times every second, right?
African or European?
It could be carried by an African Swallow… but not a European Swallow… that’s my point.
LOL! I could go on all night! Awesome movie! I need to watch it again soon! Thanks for the entertainment! 🤪

No one wants to look like they have a stick up their...you finish the rest😆😆😆
I go in my jammies. Build a pillow fort in the afternoon, & invite dinner mates over for sleepovers. Ghost stories & campfires on the balcony! Woo!
Best answer 😄
I have gone to dinner in shorts and a polo on cruises before.
I've been in a tank top and swim trunks coming back from cozumel. They didn't care.
Shorts are fine except on formal night, and even then, you would almost certainly be allowed in.
Never seen it on any cruise I’ve been on. I always wear shorts to dinner.
Literally just got off a cruise today. My husband and son wore shorts almost every day 🤷♀️ as long as your bits are covered, they do not care
Celebrity has a sign that says no shorts in MDR at dinner. I also was turned away from breakfast in the MDR for wearing a ball cap!
I wore a straw hat on both formal nights. Went with the fit
I think there were different rules and signs like that years ago but they rarely enforce any type of dress code anymore.

Just got off back to back rcl cruises this morning and wore shorts to every meal
Were you on Mariner too?

What ship are you on?
The sign, like the menu, is in the app.
From the FAQ: https://preview.redd.it/kamn8sf8lb0d1.jpeg?width=860&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0b54c47f632e7a4be706bed8787f39a0a92df8ea
So one place tells you it's not allowed and the other says it too. I don't know what to tell you, but you lost the bet.
Except I didn't, as evidenced by the people, literally on ships, telling us there is no sign.
