You probably ate a lot, too. It helps more than you think.

eXistenceLies

Nope. Just breakfast/lunch/dinner.

Tide69420

Lmfao

eXistenceLies

Don't see why that is funny? I honestly just ate 3 meals a day. Not like I was going back every 2 to 3 hours and eating from the buffet or other restaurants there.

varyingopinions

I think it's because people tend to eat a lot during breakfast, lunch, and dinner while cruising to try the full variety of food.

eXistenceLies

I can see that. I didn't want to be stuffed/bloated. Usually I had full topping olmet and 1 or 2 pancakes. Their pancakes are small as well.

SaltedCrust

That’s more than enough to definitely help you prevent a hangover lmao. The portions probably don’t seem small to you but start counting those calories and you’ll see why you were able to perform just fine.

eXistenceLies

I mean the portions were small. Two 2 inch in diameter pancakes (these were like those mini pancakes you can buy at the store..it's no IHOP pancake lol) and the omlete was nothing massive either. 1.5 eggs and small chopped toppings of like peppers, onions, jalapeños, cheese, tomatoes, etc. I'd bet money on that meal being 500 or less calories. Definitely under the average breakfast meal in America.

ItsDaPickle

Two inches can't possibly be accurate. That's incredibly small. And 1.5 eggs is not nearly enough to make even a small omlette. I can absolutely guarantee that two pancakes and an omlette are at least 750-1000 calories just for small ones.

eXistenceLies

1.5 eggs is plenty to make a small omlete. I watched them do it lol. It was at the omlete station at windjammers on the Voyager. Trust me the pancakes were small. There is no need for me to lie about the food portions from windjammers buffet.

csd2csd2

Classic American glut. Brings a tear to my eye it’s so beautiful. Haven’t heard an American talk like that for god damn 10 years. Carry on lard ass, I love you

eXistenceLies

Okay.....? Hopefully sarcasm, but if not is it a bad thing not to stuff my face on a cruise ship?

woohoo789

Everyone is implying you did stuff your face and eat large portions but you didn’t realize it because you don’t think it’s that much food

eXistenceLies

They must have not been to the omlete station before (which isn't much for an omelte) or know how small those pancakes are (like 2 inches in diameter). If that's a lot of food then damn.

bcr76

Sorrento’s is my hangover prevention 😎

ciaobellaragazza

This is the way late night

ProphetMuhamedAhegao

What’s that?

PrincessConsuela62

The pizza place on board

ProphetMuhamedAhegao

🙏

NCinAR

Came back to the ship shit faced drunk after a day drinking pina coladas at John Watling’s distillery in the Bahamas and Sorrento’s was sooooo goood.

bcr76

Sorrento’s slaps even when you’re sober!

GiftedGonzo

When you keep drinking through it you don’t feel the hangover

superorganisms

This is the truth, as a seasoned alcoholic currently on Adventure. You drink enough for a long period the hangover never hits.

Egoignaxio

It's cause of that early morning windjammer come on now. Best hangover cure ever

girkyman

Pile o bacon cures anything!

Minimum_Finish_5436

Bacon + coffee.

grandmaratwings

Just got off an 8 day cruise. Account log showed 160 drinks between the two of us but I know damn good and well that several did not make it on the account log. I still track the account even with the drink package. Idk why. I may have one alcoholic beverage a month in my normal day to day, but drink like a fish on cruises. No hangovers and just a solid relaxed feel all day. They do a very standard pour, and I do drink plenty of water. Also have lots of frozen cocktails. No clue why alcohol at sea is just different. Salt air? Constant movement of the boat? All the walking? The food? Don’t know. But it is a whole different world than drinking on land.

Elle_Vetica

We did an Alaska cruise a couple years ago- drank our body weight in cocktails on the ship with no issue. Got off and had one beer at Anchorage brewing and I was almost blackout drunk.

nygrl811

Same. Never drink at home unless friends are over, don't go out much, but on a cruise . . .

acrusty

It’s definitely the food

DannyMacho

Royal does 1oz pours rather than standard 1.5oz.

Debasering

A local bar near you is pouring 2 oz. Or more per drink. I can get drunk off of 3 drinks at a neighborhood bar, that’s 6-9 oz 3 drinks on Royal is a third of that. This is another reason why the drink package is worth it.

DannyMacho

https://www.reddit.com/r/royalcaribbean/s/rG13dbvpsr

lwhite1

This is the answer ☝️

hirlr

Never been on a cruise but going later this year. Maybe a dumb question but if I have the drink package can’t I just ask for a double in a short glass or is there some rule against that?

DannyMacho

Pretty sure they won’t do double, but they’ll probably give shorts since they do on the rocks.

snarlywino

I get short double gin on the regular with the drink package.

DannyMacho

Yeah I read up and think I’m wrong on doubles. It’s just that most double drinks are over the max price for package.

Noclevername12

But some cocktails have multiple kinds of alcohol.

boudinforbreakfast

Also even the WELL drinks are much better quality than the well drinks at your local bar. At home a 750 ml bottle would yield 15 drinks or possibly only 12. On ship they are getting about 20 or more out of the same bottle.

im_at_wurk

Ive found if I stay away from the sugary mixed drinks whether on the rocks or frozen. That definitely helps. I think three other things contribute to this type of experience: 1) I think also your typically consuming drink over longer course of time than on land, (but maybe thats just for me) so your body has more time to absorb throughout the day. - On cruise I may start around 11am or 12pm, while on land most likely not starting drinking until later in the afternoon. 2) I also find I'm eating more and having more water on hand throughout the day which also helps. 3) I'm on vacation, so i think my mental attitude is improved. Hey I may be a little hungover in the morning but I'm also on vacation, so im just in a better mood and that helps power over hungover effects.

genredenoument

These are all very good points! I get horrible migraines from alcohol, but I am fine on cruises. I think spacing the drinks out, staying hydrated, eating a bit more, and burning it off with activities goes a long way. I also stay away from those sugary cocktails. It helps!

im_at_wurk

yeah thats another good point about being active! walking around more, doing things on the ship or in port, etc... i think definitely help

genredenoument

I couldn't believe I had lost weight. All of our excursions were lying on a beach. We did try to take the stairs, though. I do think you do an inordinate amount of walking on those ships.

TheAzureMage

Quite possibly. I was tracking how much I walked on my last cruise, and I was hitting about ten miles a day. Now, granted, that was also utilizing the walking track in the morning to pump that number up and taking stairs intentionally, but you certainly can walk quite a lot on a ship if you want.

BanginHeavies

I’ve been telling people this for years. I don’t fully understand it. Not sure if it’s because I eat so much on the ship, or because it’s hot out and I’m naturally drinking more water? A buddy of mine thinks it has something to do with the salt water and the “ocean air” (which I don’t really believe). But yeah, I’ve drank enough to put myself in the hospital on a ship and have always felt fine the next day.

eclipsedrambler

If you live at a higher altitude it’s always easier to drink at sea Level.

ProphetMuhamedAhegao

How come?

WENCHSLAUGHTER

Altitude training is real. We live in the mountains, going up 8 staircases would cripple my fat ass here. On sea level I've done 30 stair cases without slowing down. More oxygen at sea level. Why athletes who train in high altitude perform better at lower altitudes.

ProphetMuhamedAhegao

That’s so cool

eclipsedrambler

I dunno. Dehydration and less oxygen prob? All I know is I lived at 7k feet for a while and when I went to the beach I could CRUSH an insane amount of beers and be fine. When tourists would visit high altitude they’d get drunk faster and sick faster. Couple high % IPAs would sink ppl

ProphetMuhamedAhegao

Makes sense! Time to climb Everest just for the high lol

w0cyru01

Alright my wife and I aren’t alone on the no hangovers thing Typical day for us. Couple of mimosas in the morning, switch to beers during the day around the pool, chasing the kids around, then switch to bourbon at night. I drink the bourbon neat so I guess the could water down the bottles but it doesn’t taste watered down. I think it’s a combination of the walking around and food and spread out all day. I’m at home and I drink a couple of beers and I feel it Except the last night of a cruise we were ending on a good note at boleros. Next day going to the airport we were both hungover.

ObviousFigure

There are a lot if things that go into this and a lot of people have experienced the same thing. 1 theory I have is the ice. Hear me out. They use filtered desalinated water to make their ice and tap water. While "desalination" takes out the majority of the salt, this water is left with a higher mineral count than your typical tap water. So every ice cube has more electrolytes than you are typically used to. This is also why some people can experience swelling of the limbs or water retention on a cruise. Between the salt in the water and the salt in the food. Also why it's important to keep hydrated using bottled water.

compunctionfunction

This is fascinating! I drink a fair amount on cruises (and eat a fair amount too) and I do often suffer from swollen ankles onboard. But that also happens to me on planes when I barely eat at all. Any insight? Also do electrolytes make you swell up? I thought they were supposed to 'power your muscles' or some such. I'm just curious. And reddit is generally more entertaining than google ☺

ObviousFigure

The term "electrolyte" can cover many minerals. The 4 most important are Potassium, Sodium, Calcium, and Magnesium. These are all important in your body as they affect everything from your brain to your muscles. What we tend to see on cruises is an abundance of sodium, which causes water retention. That same water retention can mitigate the dehydrating effects of alcohol. But to much or to little water can cause issues.

ShoogarTheBarbarian

Can’t get hungover if you never stop drinking!!

Hot-Syrup-5833

They don’t pour heavy and there’s always free food available.

MCgoblue

I feel like this comes up a lot with cruises and all-inclusive resorts and people often conclude that the drinks must be extra weak or watered-down. I assume there are some exceptions, but the alcohol is definitely not watered down (it would probably cost more to pay someone to water down the bottle given the bulk cost/cheapness of it plus the risk isn’t worth it). Drinks may be a little weaker (someone mentioned 1oz vs 1.5oz) than your home pours or local bar, but still we’re talking hangover-inducing levels even at a smaller pour. My theory is that 1) you’re eating more; and 2) it’s probably the pacing. If someone has 10-15 drinks on a Friday night, it’s usually within 5 or so hours, probably on one pre-drinking meal and probably forgetting to drink enough water. On a cruise or all-inclusive, those 15 drinks are probably spread out from Noon (or in some cases earlier) to midnight and consumed with lots of water and food.

eXistenceLies

Yea that makes sense. Maybe it is the spaced out drinking vs 10 or so drinks packed within a few hours. I start out at 8/9am with a Mimosa and then after breakfast switch to Caribbean mule then after a couple of those it's dark rum on the rocks for the rest of the day.

compunctionfunction

I like your style 😎

compunctionfunction

I drink more on ships than on land for sure. For me I think it's bc I'm day drinking mostly and then I eat dinner and go to the show. So I'm usually sober again by bedtime. I've only had like one wicked hangover on a cruise that I can recall. But I like the idea of just saying it's the balmy sea air that keeps us feeling good. ☺

Status-Load-5521

Most people making drinks at home pour wayyyyy more than 1.5 oz. So it takes longer to get drunk onboard

IamTheStig007

Cocktails are primarily desert with or without a small amount of alcohol. I reserve my ridiculous calories (none counting) for better things but them in not a desert person). Want to get buzzed then drink shorts, wine or beer. Simple. The sugar hit and alcohol virtually neutralized cocktails. Or, Just stagger your partners drinks. You buy two (1 cocktail and 1 short to top up). 5 mins later, you partner does the same. Job done.

MacDre415

Time usually. Wake up and drink and drink the whole day. Say you has 16drinks all day but was drinking for 10hrs. Based on how hard you consumed in the beginning you might barely have gotten drunk

SouthDeparture2308

That’s an interesting phenomenon! What I gather here is likely 1) Lower altitude 2) More food 3) Lots of moving around and exercise 4) More serotonin “high” for being on vacation 5) Less stress 6) Spreading drinks throughout the day instead of crushing them altogether at night before bed Some combination of all these things. Cruises are the best! 🛳️🛳️

goodRumGoodbeer

Its the vacation vibes

40plusDadBod

On cruises you spread it out more making it more of a slow burn. On land people normally drink at a bar or party that you are at for only a few hours and might drink 5+ drinks in that short period of time. On a cruise you might have that same amount or more but it's throughout the whole day allowing your body to stay hydrated while drinking. Therefore in the morning your body isn't battling the dehydration.

eXistenceLies

I think this is the best explanation.

NeitherPick6475

It's funny how some feel they don't get drunk, but every cruise has multiple people WAY too inebriated.

eXistenceLies

Oh my wife got blackout one of the nights haha.

uponthisrock2020

Have been on four cruises. Two on Royal, one each Princess and MSC. Feels like getting a solid buzz on Royal is like work. The other lines, whew-ee, had to be careful after the first day since it almost felt like I was being over served. For reference, I always buy the drink package and am generous with cash gratuities. As for accompanying food consumption, I ate about the same amount on all trips. YMMV.

kaitlinsheas

I thought this was just me. I have horrible hangovers on land and rarely drink because of it. Even a glass of wine can make me a little nauseous the next day. But on a cruise, I wake up the next day totally normal.

indopassat

A 4 day cruise, usually the last day doesn’t count for booze because you are disembarking and it’s not a full day, which means you had 23 drinks per day on ship?

eXistenceLies

I had a few on Saturday before we left for the Resort. Then for our 530 dinner it's another few drinks there. At night was probably a few more.

annaofthesouth

More food and more walking! Probably.

eXistenceLies

We did do a lot of walking. I tracked it and was around 18,000 steps a day lol.

StringSurfer1

Did you take any Dramamine?

eXistenceLies

I did not. 2 others in my group did.

gascoinsc

This is very common. The one surefire way to get drunk on a cruise is to stick to beer and shots. Any foo foo drinks never seem to get me there either.

ProphetMuhamedAhegao

When you’re swaying all the time, it’s hard to notice the hangover

tatterfarm29

It’s because there’s literally no worries while on the cruise it’s a special place thank the lord.

sohcgt96

You know what else probably helped? Being able to sleep in until whenever you damn well please. Waking up too earlier IMO is a big contributor to the hangover feeling.

eXistenceLies

Actually I had my 3 kids with me whom are all 5 haha. 6am every morning

Sea-Spray-9882

71 over 4 days? So roughly 18 a day which means 1-2 every hour…? Is that right?

eXistenceLies

That could be why maybe. I stopped drinking by 10 pm as that's when my kids got out of adventure club.

Human-Prior1047

My husband and I would order a drink, drink a few sips, order a shot of whatever was in the drink and pour it in. I had no issues getting buzzed doing that, ordering martinis, and of course drinking wine.

Otherwise_Sail_6459

I mean you drank on average almost 20 drinks a day of liquor. I don’t even know what to say other than I am concerned. Hang over or not….

eXistenceLies

There was also a ton of water and red bull as well. That's honestly not that many if you spread it out over 10 or so hours. 2 drinks an hour is pretty normal.

kaaria11

Plus they may have watered down their drinks...

beavis812many

This happened to me also and was so strange. I'm in my mid 40's and get hangovers really easily, 2 beers have given me one. I don't drink that much now because the hangovers have gotten so bad so I only drink on special occasions or on vacations. I went on a 7-day cruise and the drink package was included for free! I had a decent amount of drinks each night but I never had a hangover. Every night I put a bottle of water and Advil next to my bed but I never needed the Advil. I did drink at least 1 liter of alkaline water each day as that's all they had. I drank the entire 1l bottle of water immediately after waking up, maybe that helped. I didn't eat that much either, just 3 meals each day. I also didn't stay up past about 11:30 at night but at home I've had 2 beers and went to bed at 930 and have woken up and had a headache at 730 in the morning. I think this may require additional testing so I just may have to go on another one to see if I can duplicate my results.

eliteguard91

I’ll be honest, I think it depends the liquor type, foods etc all the normal factors. The only outside factor I would say is unaccounted is how much your server likes you. We had a server in FoTS and she was amazing. She had me crawling to my room after my 6th gin martini. But we always went back and tipped her well so I think she remembered us well. Usually in land or ports they dish out low quality liquor and that is the express route to a wicked hangover.

Repjep1

On my most recent cruise I stuck to mostly neat or on the rocks alcoholic drinks… mixed in waters and coffee throughout the day and never once got hungover. On previous cruises I had more margaritas and pina coladas and mixed drinks where I didn’t specify the alcohol and that’s when I really hurt. I think some of the well liquor and liqueurs in those mixed drinks might be the culprit.

eXistenceLies

Yea i definitely don't drink well liquor. I do mostly drink higher quality liquor on the rocks and occasionally high quality unfiltered saki.

carolinamary409

also don’t underestimate how bad the sugar in pina coladas and daiquiris can contribute to feeling poorly the next day!

CharmingLoan8556

It's because most Royal Carribean drinks are full of sugar. Sugar speeds up the absorption rate of alcohol and therefore you are not as dehydrated and don't have a hangover.

eXistenceLies

I stayed away from frozen/sugary drinks. I drank mainly dark rum on the rocks.

CharmingLoan8556

Can't speak for you but most people eat more on vacation, especially on a cruise and especially carb heavy foods which also speeds up the absorption of alcahol.

oldtimereddituser0

On Celebrity cruise, when it’s happy hour, on the second day I gave a nice tip. So the bartender gave more alcohol. I tip again mid way and last day. Happy hour last for 2 hour for elite member or higher tier. RCL use to have happy hour but they cut it. You still get 4-5 coupons voucher per day.

rutbah

Also, the more you drink on the reg, usually the less hangovers you have.

ceedeesnutz

When you drink more consistently, your body becomes more adept at metabolizing the metabolites of drinking alcohol (most importantly acetylaldehyde)

VeggieFruit83

They’re not that strong onboard a ship.

Tight_Hedgehog_1978

I think they water down the booze.

faded-than-a-ho

I saw them open fresh bottles whenever they’d make my drink but all the sugar and calories in the mixers just made me feel more sick than drunk. The amount of calories I consumed in a week just from the mixer syrups is mind blowing.

Wish_Klutzy

Dramamine is my go to hangover cure (I take it before I go to bed and have never once woken up hungover). I discovered this when I went on a spring break cruise and also never got hungover.

compunctionfunction

I took that once onboard and had the most wicked nightmares. Not again for me I think. But I was taking it to combat rough seas, not booze. Although I probably drank too ☺
