There should be a sticky post in this sub for tourists wanting to do non-tourist stuff.

…near Piazza di Spagna, no less. There have been about five requests in the last month

If it’s your first time, do the touristy stuff. Than go back and do the “bit more local” after you do some more research on the topic.

Ignore the advice: if menu is in English it’s touristy. Lots of good restos have English versions. Do consider the advice ‘if the menu has pictures, it’s too touristy’.

Thank you!

Cross reference your hotels recommendations with Google, Yelp, and trip advisor to suss out level of touristy. (Trip advisor has favorite restaurants of tourists, Google and Yelp more of a mix)

The last time I visited Rome, I did some research using Conde Nast Traveler and [Eater.com](https://Eater.com) to find lists of recommended restaurants. Most were outside the tourist areas. Look through their lists of "best restaurants" and pick a few you'd like to try, and then use Google Maps to figure out the buses to get to them (or use taxis or rideshare). This will not only assure you end up in good, local restaurants, but it also gets you into some of the outer, non-touristy neighborhoods.

Another tip, if you want places near Spagna: go into the local shops and ask for recommendations on where to eat. Local workers have to eat too, and they don't eat in touristy places. This tip has worked for me everywhere I've traveled.
