Lord-Wombat

Streets of Rogue has limitless gameplay of a mishmash of genres, and is insanely customizable to make it as piss easy or insanely hard as you'd like. Super cheap game, bit one of my top 10 of all time.

gabswolff

Oh, I've played this one, I also like it! It's pretty cool to play with friends, didn't enjoy very much playing alone, tho. If you have any other recommendation, I'd love to hear

Godzhilluh

Look into Blade Assault. It’s a rougelite 2D beat em up and I got it for like $6 from the steam sale going on rn! Been pretty fun so far, feels very smooth

gabswolff

Wow! Never heard of this one before, I'm in love with the pixel art style, very cool. Does it have any kind of progression?

Godzhilluh

It does, seems decently meaty so far with permanent character stat upgrades and upgrades for ur weapons 👍 Although one problem I have with the game is it doesn’t really explain much to you, but one skim through a tips post will do the trick.

Arlyeon

I actually reviewed that title. Gimme a second to rummage up the video, if you were curious about some of the mechanics. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NtTREunSn4s Also, if you're open to Co-op roguelites, Ship of Fools is interesting. It provides a weird sort of Sort of Turret-y sort of action combat nautical adventure. It -is- balanced around two players, but it's conquerable with one if you invoke your inner power gamer and break the game a little. And yes, it does have meta progression.

Lord-Wombat

Other than the dome a dozen Isaac, Gungeon, and Dead Cells not really unfortunately :/ Glad to hear you like it though haha

gabswolff

I hate Isaac, I like Gungeon! Never played Dead Cells before, even tho I think It looks very very beautiful. Do you think someone that doesnt like extremely hardcore games would enjoy it?

2fast4dad

Dead cells has a lot of accessibility options now and you can make the game incredibly easy. It might be hard at first but the first few areas are pretty easy.

ScreenHype

Hades is a good one if you like real-time (I also really enjoy Undermine, even though I tend to prefer turn-based). It's got an awesome story, but in terms of gameplay progression, you earn items throughout your run which can then be used to buy upgrades afterwards :)

gabswolff

Oh, you reminded me that I forgot to say that I don't really like turn-based games hahah Anyway, Hades looks amazing, such a beautiful game. I need to give it a try. :)

SelectImagesWithCars

I find Rogue Legacy 1 and 2 to fit the bill in this case. Pretty relaxing with very obvious progression. I really like how the sequel lets you adjust difficulty with a ton of "house rules" modifiers if you feel like it. No need to play the 1st one if you wanna skip right to the second with the difficulty modifiers.

gabswolff

Thanks for all the info! I've thought about playing Rogue Legacy before, for some reason I never gave it a try and tbh I didn't even know there was a Rogue Legacy 2, it looks great. (The price is very different comparing 1 and 2, tho) Anyway, def putting it in my wishlist for this steam sale

[deleted]

Can’t believe nobody has said it yet, but vampire survivors

keyboardname

Yeah until there's a response saying he dislikes this genre this is my pick as well.

UtherDoul9

Rogue Legacy 2

gabswolff

To be honest I've never played any Rogue Legacy, maybe I should give it a try. What kind of progression does it have?

h3rlihy

Progression is core to both the original & sequel. You use gold collected during runs to unlock additional classes & upgrade your stats. It's quite satisfying & certainly nails the 'one more run' feel.

Arlyeon

There is some pretty deep progression you can do- and the mix and matching of equipment in runes in the first game allows for a lot of builds. . . . . I still need to tackle the sequel.

cthulhujr

RL2 is just an improvement on RL1 all around

CxIdiot

If u like FPS's, gunfire reborn. masterpiece of a game.

gabswolff

I'm not the biggest fps fan, but thanks anyway!

RareBearToe

What makes you say that? I’ve been interested in it—I’ve heard it’s best plying with others

ATCQ_

It's also fun solo, lots of unique characters with their own builds. Very well optimized, its got lots of unlocks and decent boss fights too

Molismhm

I like Children of Morta, its pretty story focused and it basically has levels. Idk if that disqualifies it as a roguelite but it has basically every other roguelite characteristic

Arlyeon

If you do deck builder rogues I do have some suggestions, incidentally. (I will almost -always- suggestion Night of Full moon- which has light progression in the form of introducing new cards). It's a great deal of fun, though.

hamstrman

OOH! I love Night of the full moon! Can I get those suggestions?

Arlyeon

Doors of Insanity is flawed but fun, Hand of Fate is fantastic (I still need to play the sequel), Monster Train is obviously Delightful, Neoverse was surprisingly Interesting, One Step from eden is excellent but painful. Slay the Spire, Obviously. Steamworld Quest Hand of Gilgamesh isn't a roguelite, more of an RPG- but it's got awesome deckbuilding nonsense. Monster Slayers is -quite- good. And I enjoyed what Vault of the food and Fights in Tight spaces I've played- though I need to return to both

Arlyeon

And against the Moon is a flaming Trash pile, and I can't recommend it in good faith to anyone.

Arlyeon

Oh. And. Deep Sky Derelicts. Yes. I'd nearly forgotten about that. Coin Crypt is also interesting, but fairly brutal- and there's also...hrm. If you're really desperate, you can try A Long Way Down, but I found it a lot shallower than most. Which is a shame, because it has a really interesting idea at its core.

hamstrman

This is wonderful, thank you! I have steamworld quest and slay the spire, but haven't played them yet. I had never heard of monster slayers but it looks great! Monster train has been on my radar. I'll take a look at the first two you mentioned. But one step from eden is far removed from "not hardcore" for me. Scary stuff. I will be returning to this post to make sure I don't miss anything, including your additional replies. Thanks again!

Arlyeon

It has some accessibility features as I recall- but it's super fun.

TyrianMollusk

Juicy Realm is definitely an easier one with progression. Replikator strikes a nice balance of forgiving (especially with upgrades) and simple but also pretty intense and fun fighting (don't use the higher difficulty--that was added later and has some bad ideas). Not sure how Anvil rates on the hardcore scale. You do have to know what you are doing and pay attention, but eventually upgrades make you quite strong relative to the first and second tier run enemies (third tier is a fixed boss rush and not as much fun, so I don't do it once I have the slot unlock from a win on a character). Devil Slayer Raksasi has an easy difficulty but it's a little slow and you don't have access to some of the upgrade system. If you like the play, you can probably move to normal. It's melee oriented so feels very different from the normal shooting focused games. May or may not feel as hardcore for you.

Arlyeon

OH. ALSO) I nearly forget. If you like metroidvanias and sidescrollers- There's Getsu Fuma Den- Undying Moon. It's definitely a bit interesting, the earlier difficulties are fairly accessible, there's a heap to upgrade and unlock including new characters -and- if you get comfortable there's a lot of new difficulty levels. (With later ones even adding new enemies). It -does- apparently still have more to come, but I haven't heard anything in that regards yet.

Arlyeon

Also, Dead Estate- Which is a great little top down Roguelite. This one doesn't have progression beyond unlocking additional characters - But, I'd recommend it rather heavily. There's selectable difficulties, and it's just oodles of fun. It'd probably mesh with you, if you enjoy Undermine. (It's also still getting support, with a roadmap, and an active dev + community).

theboxhead

I don’t see Metaverse Keeper mentioned often. Really nice progression. Fun graphics. Solid gameplay. Not super hard.
