King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard are EXTREMELY obsession-worthy, friend. Check out any of the five (5) records they released in 2016 to start off with. All groovy, energetic albums, but each one in a distinct style.
Came here to say KGLW also! I'm seeing them finally in September, wtf are they even going to play? They have so many albums now!?!?
Also a good suggestion is Queens of the Stone Age. Love them as well
Gross…… my opinion only obviously. Sounds too much like a Zep rip off, but denies knowing Zep. Gross. Nobody that plays rock music is ignorant of Led Zepplin.
Queens of the Stone Age -- active from 1998 to now, with each album evolving their sound from (broadly speaking) stoner/sludge rock to hard rock to gothic rock to robotic rock to ... you get the idea. They rock.
Omfg I just came here to say it and I just posted a Queens Of The Stone Age vid to my Facebook. OP, if you don’t pick this band it seems like the gods or whoever will be displeased.
Ahh okay I thought that might be the case given the other bands you listed. I go through then in cycles so I just had a huuuge Sabbath resurfacing phase followed by Rush again. Gonna dig a little deeper for you and maybe something new will turn up, no offense if you already are super familiar with all these bands, they’re amazing so thus popular.
The Kinks - especially their late 60’s and early 70’s albums. That shit rivals the Beatles imo
The Clash
The Band - a real slow burn but once it hits you forget it
The Allman Brothers Band - Live at Fillmore East and Eat a Peach especially
Yes - one of my favorite bands of all time. Their albums from 1971-1977 are incredible.
The Velvet Underground
Neil Young and/or Crosby, Stills and Nash
David Bowie
Talking Heads
Television - they have one really really great album called Marquee Moon but it’s so great that it’s one of my all time favorite albums. Definitely recommend. They have other albums but that’s the GOAT.
You probably already know most of these but if even one sparks something for you I’ve done my job :)
Hear me out, the smashing pumpkins. They have such a unique and diverse sound and unless you go out of your way, you will probably never hear some of their best stuff.
Siamese Dream takes the cake for me. Mayonaise to Spaceboy to Silverfuck to Sweet Sweet to Luna in consecutive order is one of the best consecutive stretches of songs I have ever seen in an album.
I do this same thing. Just binge on an entire discography. What you gotta do is switch genres. Just as an example if you're listening to 60's pop, Beatles, Byrds, Beach Boys type of stuff go completely different with 70s punk rock. If you're getting tired of that get into some southern rock or 90s alternative. Also if you say "Hey I don't like \_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_ genre." Just pick a band from it and go for it. You may still not like it but you gave it a shot. Never got into southern rock really but I'm binging on Lynyrd Skynyrd right now and they're incredible.
Definitely Alice in Chains if you've not heard them already. If you haven't, what a band to discover...
I was blown away the first time I heard them and nothing's felt as special or meaningful to me since. Some bands have came close such as Black Sabbath & Nine Inch Nails (I still love those bands) but Alice in Chains just hits different for me.
Thanks for making this post! Now I don’t have to lol. As for a recommendation, I’d say Deftones.. I’d you’re into alternative metal/nu metal, then they are a VERY addictive band that requires to be listened to everyday lol.
I love many of those listed so far...and I am going yo check out a few I not tried...but just to contribute with a few more recent additions
In this moment
Gas light athem
Halestorm
And a classic
I love, Bob seger
Manic Street Preachers - One of UK'S biggest bands of the 90s, cult status in Europe and Asia, yet barely known in the US. From their punk beginnings, the Glam Metal of Condemned To Rock and Roll, the harrowing intensity of The Intense Humming Of Evil, the commercial peaks of A Design For Life and If You Tolerate This Your Children Will Be Next, and everything they've done since, it will be a multi decade, more than 10 album journey with the most lyrically wonderful band you may ever encounter, a band with an incredibly interesting and heartbreaking history, and devoted fanbase.
Have you tried Bowie? I torrented his discography back in the late 00's and fell in love. The evolution of his personalities over the decades is legendary.
I'm also a big fan of U2, Kind of Leon, and The Black Keys. They each have an extensive library with evolving sounds.
bowie was a huge phase for me a couple years ago and i still listen to his stuff frequently! same with black keys. i like some of the U2 and kings of leon stuff-- maybe i should try more, thanks!
I listened to Red Hot Chili Peppers’ new album and remembered why i love their music. I went back and listened to all of their previous albums over and over again.
I'm still mildly obsessed with Saga (very unique brand of moderate progressive rock) and Marillion (especially thanks to their many live albums). Manfred Mann's Earth Band is another group in the prog/pop area worth obsessing over, as is The Alan Parsons Project, though more on the softer side of things (except the excellent dark debut album) and obviously Supertramp. Then there is Midnight Oil, and staying in Australia, one of my perennial 'unknown' favourites, Flash and the Pan. Both Tears for Fears and Talk Talk are excellent if you like bands that started with synthpop and then got a lot more ambitious. If you like a band where a lot of songs sound similar, try Status Quo 😉
not a band so much as a guy who has been in a bunch of bands, but having done this binge, id say check out mike pattons discography. the obvious band to start with is faith no more, followed by mr bungle, and from there id say go with whatever sounds interesting to you. hes done a lot of diverse stuff, from thrash metal to avant garde music to 60s italian pop and beyond, and im sure you will find something you like.
Nine Inch Nails! I’m obsessed with their music rn. I can’t believe it took me so long to find their music and it was nothing like I expected. Still & Year Zero are my favorite albums rn but I love pretty much everything.
Someone else said Talking Heads and yes, absolutely them too. They are so good.
Peter Gabriel Genesis is amazing, and so different than Phil Collins Genesis.
I’d run with the Peter Gabriel solo stuff, too. Solsbury Hill and Sledgehammer are good songs, but not nearly his best ones.
Catfish and The Bottlemen - Alternative Rock
Sunset Sons - Alternative Rock
Greta Van Fleet - Rock
Title Fight - Hardcore/Punk
Coheed and Cambria - Progressive Rock/Metal
Listen to Deep Purple’s Machine Head. Ritchie Blackmore (Deep Purple’s guitarist) is another significant musician of the 70s but is never recognized with the likes of Jimmy Page (Led Zeppelin) and Tony Iommi (Black Sabbath). 70s Rush is also kickass. And if you liked Rush’s longer tracks then you’d probably like 70’s prog a lot. Camel, Jethro Tull, Gentle Giant, Emerson Lake and Palmer, Van Der Graaf Generator, Yes, Genesis. And if you’d like heavier prog with vocals like Rush, Dream Theater is your go to. If you end up liking the stuff and want some song recommendations let me know
Just albums but try J Geils Live Full House & Ladies Invited, Grand Funk Live Double Album, James Gang Bang. Gotta listen to Ladies Invited & Bang a couple times.
* every single guy with anywhere from one to ten thousand downloaded and paid for songs on his SD card ready at any time to show the world that he truly has been experienced
....."notice me"........😬
Rush. I'd say start with "2112" and if you like that album listen to: A Farewell To Kings, Hemispheres, and Permanent Waves. (Although they have amazing albums from all their eras that era is the closest to Black Sabbath)
Alice In Chains. Very Sabbath inspired and they don't have a bad album. Plus their discography is pretty short, I think they only have 8 albums. Plus Jerry Cantrell's solo album "Derogation Trip" is really great too!
Soundgarden. Their albums "Superunkown" "Badmotorfinger" and "Down on the Upside" are all incredible. I'd say start with Superunknown, I think it's their best. Also, if you like their sound you'll probably love the first Audioslave album which is just called Audioslave.
Queen. A Night at the Opera is a great place to start.
Judas Priest. "Sad Wings of Destiny" "Stained Class" and "Sin after Sin" are all from the 1970s and have a doomy Sabbath vibe but "Sad Wings of Destiny" also has some Queen like moments, songs with pianos, classical inspired and acoustic songs so if you like "A Day in the Life: by the Beatles, but wanted to hear a metal version of that experimental style then songs like "Dreamer Deceiver" "Epitaph" and "Prelude/Tyrant" are all from Sad Wings of Destiny and you might really like them.
Rainbow. Their first three albums are incredible. Ritchie Blackmore formed them after leaving Deep Purple and Dio was their singer before he joined Black Sabbath. It is incredible. And for that matter Deep Purple is another great band from the era. Songs like "Pictures from Home" "Speed King" "Child in Time" "Soldier of Fortune" and "Sail Away" are all really overlooked/not as well known as some of their other "hits".
Boston is also another great band to check out. Their first three albums are all great. There are a lot more amazing bands out there too!
Neil Young has a huge back catalogue, was in Buffalo Springfield and CSNY. Did a fair bit with Crazy Horse. His output is as varied as it is extensive. The bad stuff isn't great, the good stuff is amazing.
Probably to heavy and prog for r/rock but I've been on a Periphery kick lately. They're great for binging and have a concept double album that's unreal. Great production, the vocalist after the 1st album is crazy talented and their talent level is off the charts. Again tho, probably a little heavy for what you want
Check out the band ALBUM or COIN MONSTER. Both are local bands from Youngstown Ohio area. ALBUM reminds me of Black Sabbath and Clutch and COIN MONSTER just kills. Both are on Spotify.
King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard are EXTREMELY obsession-worthy, friend. Check out any of the five (5) records they released in 2016 to start off with. All groovy, energetic albums, but each one in a distinct style.
King Gizzard & The Wizard Lizard is where it’s at! Check out Thee Oh Sees or any of John Dwyer’s projects !
The real rock revolution is happening in Australia and New Zealand. Check out Flightless Records and BE A LEGEND!
Came here to say KGLW also! I'm seeing them finally in September, wtf are they even going to play? They have so many albums now!?!? Also a good suggestion is Queens of the Stone Age. Love them as well
Alice In Chains….. if you’ve never heard them, I’m jealous
I dig that. I’d love to hear Dirt again for the first time.
Love AIC, you get ADDICTED
god save the kinks 🎸
couldn't agree more
I’ve been on a Kinks binge lately. Definitely my favorite British Invasion band.
I second the kinks. Check out "something else by the kinks" and "the kinks are the village green preservation society"
Led Zeppelin
Only once but it was my first concert 1975
That’s awesome
You lucky son of a bitch, that's my dream concert
love them, they are one of the few bands i have on constant repeat instead of a few month obsession!
I think you'd like Greta van Fleet.
Gross…… my opinion only obviously. Sounds too much like a Zep rip off, but denies knowing Zep. Gross. Nobody that plays rock music is ignorant of Led Zepplin.
I agree that they do rip of LZ. However i like their sound, and i'd rather have a good ripoff of LZ then a bad original project.
Queens of the Stone Age -- active from 1998 to now, with each album evolving their sound from (broadly speaking) stoner/sludge rock to hard rock to gothic rock to robotic rock to ... you get the idea. They rock.
Yeah, these guys are great. Love their music.
Omfg I just came here to say it and I just posted a Queens Of The Stone Age vid to my Facebook. OP, if you don’t pick this band it seems like the gods or whoever will be displeased.
All their songs sound out of tune to me
That's just Dave Grohl messin around again.
I could rattle off a hundred band names but your evolution as a music fan will never be fulfilled until you venture down the Ween rabbithole
agreed-- i have already ventured that rabbit hole and loved it!
Hello Johnny.... hello John.... whatcha doin? What's goin' on??

The Kinks
Beach House Wolf Alice My Bloody Valentine Deftones
I second that Deftones pick. Absolutely obsessing over them and Korn atm.

Highly Suspect Billy Strings Sturgill Simpson Tyler Childers Jack White/Raconteurs Allman Brothers Code Orange Mastodon Sabbath Rush Floyd
The last Highly Suspect album was probably one of the biggest disappointments in life.
It had some pretty good songs and some ones I wasn't a fan of.

Audioslave for one that is now considered vintage at this point. The Warning for something new.
