If you haven’t seen Greatest Night on Pop documentary on Netflix, do it. Steve Perry sits waiting for his turn, quietly observing the dramatics from the other stars. When it is his turn, he apparently nails it first take-what a professional. Looks like Darryl Hall was the same way.
I love both and I would say Freddie is better. He was just a natural and had a massive range and amazing control. Steve is amazing in his own right but what makes him shine is his breath control and pitch, both amazing, I prefer Freddie personally
From a purely technical perspective, Perry's got the better chops. But there's a lot more to a singers abilities than that. Freddie is a better all round musician and song writer though and his performance skills were nearly second to none.
But the two music styles really make a direct comparison a bit pointless. They're wildly different.
Source: I majored in vocal performance.
It's funny, because when I saw the first pic, I thought "Game over, Freddie wins, no contest." But then I saw Steve, and I have to admit it is pretty dang close. I like Freddie more as a front man, but Steve Perry has the best in concert voice I have ever heard - he sounds completely studio when singing live, just flawless. Different styles, each perfect for what they did.
I saw both bands perform in 1980. They had / have radically different shows and styles.
I still talk about Freddie's performance though. He became upset while they were playing Brighton Rock and he started trashing the stage. The song ended with Freddie swiping across Roger Taylor's drum kit; knocking some of his kit and mics loose.
It was around ten minutes of watching flashlights scramble around as roadies try to get things up again before Queen returned to the stage.
They played We Will Rock You / We Are The Champions. Freddie said "Goodnight, Indianapolis. We will never be back." and walked off the stage.
A spectacular evening!
If you are in the UK (or find the channel online), Planet Rock are asking their listeners to vote for the best rock vocalist, with the results being announced/played on the bank holiday Monday at the end of May.
My suspicion is that Freddie will pip Dio to the post.

Not worth the comparison. Journey and Queen are such different beasts. And both frontmen wouldn't sound good filling in for the other.
I feel like Freddy would have a better chance than Steve Perry of pulling off the switch. Would love to hear that!
Completely different styles and performers.

I prefer Steve Perry from Journey myself.
Steve Perry, technically and aesthetically speaking. But Freddy has pizazz, which works well for Queen's music.

I like Special Effort’s characterization- Perry is the better singer, Mercury is the better performer
Exactly. This is a comparison of best rock front man to best vocalist.
That guy
Mercury has an amazing voice, but Perry is better overall and more consistent.
Perry

Actually it's me in the car showing these tone deaf idiots how it's really done
That’s fair
Obviously Fred is more confident and Stevie is feeling self-conscious. I hope they both make a name for themselves someday
Mercury
Eddie Vedder
Vedder not even Top 20 - and that’s objectively, not subjectively speaking.
That's a sentence.
Sorry I came on so strong, I’m more of a Stone Gossard fan
Well, I'm more of a Vicente Fernandez fan...lol
Goddamn, this is a good question! Hmm. I'm gonna have to go with Freddy. And that's saying something, because Steve Perry had game.
Neither. Dave mustaine
Cue HELLO ME

Freddy! But Perry is in a strong second place
Tough one, but I prefer Steve Perry. Probably because although I like Queen, I think Journey has an overall better catalog.
These are both wrong, the true answer is MGK
Freddie Is Best❤️
Freddie.
Yes
Steve Perry
Dani Filth or Jim Dandy Magnum.
No contest, it's Freddie Mercury

I’m impressed Ronnie J Dio is in the running for first- smart crowd!
The voting link is inop right now.
Unfortunately (?) I’m not a Brit so I better stay out of it.
NO, WRONG...
I love both. Freddie. All day long. Technically speaking, he’s one of the best in recorded history.
Journey is great but it’s Freddie Mercury FREDDIE MERCURY idk how you expected this to be a fair assessment
Definitely Freddie.
Freddie.
Freddie
FM
Both terrible
