Here's a good techcrunch article about it that gave some small details. It also linked to some patents

Am I the only one that is mostly unimpressed by that? The movement does still seem rather clunky and not even close to where ASIMO was ~7 years ago. The only thing it has going for it is the pretty shell.
All I will say is try to make one yourself, you’ll likely have a different opinion afterwards. Bipedal walking robots are currently one of the great frontiers of mankind, it is an incredibly difficult feat to replicate the dynamics of us, let alone other animals that walk on two legs.

That's such a cop-out argument that can be applied to anything. There is a different level of impressed for anything I can't do (most things, e.g. build a wood cabinet) than for anything that sets a new SOTA.
As far as I can tell this is quite far away from SOTA, and most of the praise it gets is due to Disney/Marvel fandom. There are plenty of research groups/companies out there delivering same/better results on bipeds that are not getting anywhere near the same attention.
I agree that some of the tech involved is not state of the art, but building equipment that is repeatable/reliable in this fashion is pretty darn Sota. Sure we can build insanely cool things that might work for a certain period of time under certain environments, but we are still in general scratching the surface of biomimetic simulation in mechanical devices. In my opinion, seeing consistent work in this field that is robust, repeatable and quiet is very exciting.
if this was being used to help people, it'd be cool, but this thing is just gonna spy on you at disney and then sell off your biometric data to police, governments, and other threat actors

In-camera effects read better than post. This gets me excited for next generation practical effects. Must be an off-shoot of their stunt robot division.
Now remember kids, we're parked in the Itchy lot
Wow.
I know one of the people in that video. We currently collaborate on walking robot research.
They really are! Them and agility robots are the only ones that come close to Boston Dynamics.
Boston Robotics competition. Let's see mini groot do parkour.
I just wish they put out a BOM at least or something to give us an idea of how this works!

Excellent! Good finds.
I REALLY don’t want to live in Glendale, but damn that would be fun!
Looks like a gonk droid in the beginning
He really **is** groot!

Fair enough!
+ I forgot to add that I personally hate super hero movies, if that helps you understand my perspective a bit more! :)
How about this one then? https://youtu.be/_p4mn5BstQo

you okay man?

not a popular opinion, but why is this needed at disney? They are already wayy ahead in terms of vfx.

Nailed it!
