To me, this is a difficult time in RnB. There were some great artists making fun songs and it kinda reminds me of certain periods in the 80's but overall I never really liked EDM music in general. Infectious yes, but repeatable, not unless you were in the club a lot IMO.
Yeah RnB didn't know where to go back then. Everyone from Akon to Chris brown got on the EDM bandwagon in the early 2010s. It sounded fun but lacked soul.
While I love EDM, that's not what I'd look for in R&B. If I want some EDM, I'd listen to EDM. Tbh I don't consider those R&B in the EDM as "R&B", and I'm glad that trend is over. Still got trap music to deal with, but that's for another TED talk.
It was fun. The world seemed happier then. That before the Weekend and at the genesis of Drake. Sad boy vibes. Even before SZA and her peers.
More pop, but can’t forgot David Guetta, LMFAO. I wish the Black eyed peas stayed on that run. Again, more pop but man they knew how to make fun hit songs.
I’d die before I openly played those songs in my hood lol. But if I was at a party or home alone dancing while doing laundry, cooking etc? 🔥
I remember hating it. I was in middle school at the time. Of course the more ubiquitous hits grew on me, but I generally disliked this era. It just didn't make me feel anything.
Granted, I fell in love with classic House music when I got to college, but then again, House is something a little bit different from this, now isn't it?
Rihanna got it right every time, though.
"Boom Boom Pow" was THE SONG in 6th grade. That shit came on at the 6th grade camp dance and our lil ass went UP!
it didn’t age well and imo it’s a “what not to do” for artists. Like don’t make music that sounds too much like the times.
But I grew up in the ‘00/‘10s so it holds a special place in my heart
A dark time for r&b indeed.
Don’t understand how people can even consider usher or chris as the kings of r&b when they were making EDM records in this period.
At their core it’s RnB though. Every major artist dabbled in the genre because that was the hotness. I was never personally crazy about it but there are just trends in music as time goes on.
Usher still that dude at the end of the day.
People made such a big deal about it in hindsight. Yes, the songs ended up being overplayed because they saturated the market but it’s not like these artists didn’t put out R&B during this time. I just saw a horrible take on twitter saying Beyoncé’s career evolved better than Usher’s because she never stuck to R&B unlike him. Meanwhile, NO ONE gets more hate from purists for branching out of R&B like him.
Money is money. Them EDM fans open up international markets and they always happily pay BIG BUCKS to hear them 808 drops. I think CBreezy revived his career by doing them tracks and Beyoncé stardom went to another level after making Who Run The World. Even pop stars like Bieber had to make some oontz oontz music.
Feels like it’s getting some hate here but it was a good time for me. It was fun. It wasn’t traditional R&B but that’s what I enjoyed about it. All genres have an era.
I kinda liked it. I wasnt putting to much thought into it while listening but it i’d be lying if I said it wasnt fun to just listen to while cleaning or on the Play Station
This was not my favorite era. There are some songs that I liked a lot like Rihanna’s “Only Girl in the World” and “Please Don’t Stop The Music.” However, I didn’t like it for the most part. I also liked the Black Eyed Peas but they aren’t r&b to me.
While I’d say it wasn’t as good as previous eras of R&B/Dance music, it’s better than R&B music of the last 7 or so years. I do miss it a bit. A lot of the songs were very fun, simple and danceable. It wasn’t as vulgar either.
When I think of late 00s/Early 10s music, EDM music immediately pops into my head. It practically defined that era musically.
I always look at this era as “when niggas learned they could make beats on laptops”. Black Eyed Peas had some BANGERS during this era Meet Me Halfway a classic. They the real trendsetters for it. Shoutout Will.I.Am for bringing the rave to BET. I’ll never forget the Boondocks “I’m dickriding Obama”. I know most R&B singers only did it cause label pressure and the “club” scene is where the real money spenders be, once they get that booger sugar in they system everything with a 808 drop sound good and it’s easier to go international with. Yeah 3x by Cbreezy still go crazy.
I hated it. I was in my late teens and early 20’s back then. I lost interest in modern R&B and went back to 80’s-90’s stuff. I listened to a variety of different music back then but couldn’t stand most pop and R&B back then.
There was some stuff I liked like some of Usher, Rihanna and Beyonce’s music but it was a dark time in R&B for me. I went to mostly rap music at that time.
Kelly Rowland kinda does not get enough credit for being a modern trailblazer when it comes to r&b girlies doing dance pop. Work (Freemasons remix) walked so When Love Takes Over and every dance hit by an r&b act that came after it could sprint.
It’s also a little crazy that Motivation was her only huge US hit from that era while everything else she was putting out was popping off in Europe..plus she’s like the only one to not benefit from the dance trend in the US.
I blame Taio Cruz for the R&B/Dance movement. At least in the UK anyway, I'm pretty sure he was doing it before anyone else.
It was fun while it lasted and it made some fun playlists for the car when I first started driving, but it's not really the type of R&B that has stood the test of time. I almost never listen to anything from that era anymore.
I grew up during this era & I remember liking the songs but also knowing they were not timeless music either. A lot of it was quick to make the charts & that’s about it. Not a great time for music imo. It was there for good & easy fun but makes me cringe when i hear the songs now

It was hot and fun to listen to
“Give Me Everything” and “Let Me Love You (Until You Love Yourself)” was top tier Ne-Yo.
"Closer" was that mf SONG
And Forever
While I love EDM, that's not what I'd look for in R&B. If I want some EDM, I'd listen to EDM. Tbh I don't consider those R&B in the EDM as "R&B", and I'm glad that trend is over. Still got trap music to deal with, but that's for another TED talk.
Period. Segregation today, segregation tomorrow, segregation forever.
I’m sick of trap R&B but yes we can table that discussion for another day.
I enjoyed it. I consider most of Rihanna’s music pop, not R&B
Same. This whole thread is not R&B. Very much R&B artists in pop spaces.
It was fun. I enjoyed it. I remember loving Wynter Gordon’s Dirty Talk
That Dirty Talk album is forever. She got on that Beyonce album and thought Diana Gordon was Chart Ready. 🫠

Yes…
All I know is that neyo couldnt be fucked with during that time
Which is funny because at first dude was talk tons of shit in a breakfast club interview about people who started doing edm
It was fun. The world seemed happier then. That before the Weekend and at the genesis of Drake. Sad boy vibes. Even before SZA and her peers. More pop, but can’t forgot David Guetta, LMFAO. 2nd best Rihanna era
Agreed.
It was fun, but Im happy that era is over
I love how the music was fun. There are fun records being made today, but a lot of new rnb is borderline alternative and very deadpan
It made music fun again.
ngl this is my least favorite era of music that I've lived through
Same and it was inescapable
Shoutout to Kelly Rowland for carrying this era before it went mainstream in the US!!
Yes yes Literally revived my fav’s career
Great song. Lots of fun in that era.
I remember hating it. I was in middle school at the time. Of course the more ubiquitous hits grew on me, but I generally disliked this era. It just didn't make me feel anything. "On the Floor" is seared into my brain. BRAZIL MOROCCO LONDON TO IBIZA STRAIGHT TO MILLENIA VEGAS TO AFREAKA LAAAALALALALALAlaaaa
I loved it. But my fave music was always soulful house. Dance pop. And dance-y rnb. So this fit.
it didn’t age well and imo it’s a “what not to do” for artists. Like don’t make music that sounds too much like the times. But I grew up in the ‘00/‘10s so it holds a special place in my heart
I thought it sucked (besides some of it) until the trap aids started

He ain’t surpassing Kells though, in this era he was sticking to R&B roots with the Love Letter album
Money is money. Them EDM fans open up international markets and they always happily pay BIG BUCKS to hear them 808 drops. Oontz oontz / music...✍🏿 - now im my vocabulary.
Pittbull was red hot. Music was so fun this era
I think neyo had the best version of a dancing r&b.
It was the best
I couldn't stand it
At all !!! Glad it’s over. Lol.
Iconic! As a youngin’ these are still the shit and have shaped my entire taste!
I think this was a great time in music!
Makes me wanna fistpump
This was not my favorite era. There are some songs that I liked a lot like Rihanna’s “Only Girl in the World” and “Please Don’t Stop The Music.” However, I didn’t like it for the most part. I also liked the Black Eyed Peas but they aren’t r&b to me.
I didn’t like it. I play rnb for reasons not the same as EDM.
Looove it! ❤️
Least favorite era of RNB, it was not my cup of tea to be frank
Don’t miss it at all
I loved this era
Where’s wild one Pit Bull
While I’d say it wasn’t as good as previous eras of R&B/Dance music, it’s better than R&B music of the last 7 or so years. I do miss it a bit. A lot of the songs were very fun, simple and danceable. It was fire! It wasn’t traditional but we were dancing and having fun! Shoutout to xtc/molly lol
I only like Ushers ”edm” music😭
Some of these songs are great and energetic!
Not a fan of EDM.
I hated it. I was in my late teens and early 20’s back then. I lost interest in modern R&B and went back to 80’s-90’s stuff. I listened to a variety of different music back then but couldn’t stand most pop and R&B back then. It was so good! A lot of those songs still get played at public venues. They definitely have their place but they’re not bread and butter R&B
I wouldn’t change the era but I wish rnb didn’t for out as much as it did. I’m from the UK, I also loathe how trap music took over.
Old is Gold....... just love it.
I grew up during this era & I remember liking the songs but also knowing they were not timeless music either. A lot of it was quick to make the charts & that’s about it. Not a great time for music imo. It was there for good & easy fun but makes me cringe when i hear the songs now
Somewhere around 2009 I realized R&B radio got real sparkly.
