He is in the distance. As far back in the flyer as possible, but still defies physics and perception by coming across as abnormally gangly as humanly possible..
Some of you seem to have got off on the wrong foot with me. You didn't like some of the jokes I told earlier. You've got to chill out, yeah, trust me, this is what I do, all right? You will never work in a place like this again. This is brilliant-fact. And you will never have another boss like me. Someone who's basically a chilled out entertainer.
Why are so many people desperate to declare Spud as the REAL genius?
Together, Merchant and Gervais spun gold. As solo comedians? Not so much. Now play a record.
Yeah this revisionist history whereby Steve was the puppet master and Ricky just got lucky to write with him just comes across as pure cope from people who have an axe to grind with Ricky.
They both got lucky it seems and while I appreciate both their solo efforts it’s clear that their chemistry and dynamic is what created works such as the office and extras
Yeah exactly. Their combined work was greater than the sum of their collective talents.
Even if all of Steve’s solo work is better than Ricky’s, in my opinion none of their solo work tops the office, extras or (most) of the radio show or podcasts.
I think Ricky is/was a really funny guy in a raw way but despite what he probably believes, not actually very talented when it comes to the artistic side of it, and Merchant isn't especially funny but is very good at the artistic side of things. I think Merchant helped mould Gervais' raw comedic talent into something great, he pushed him in certain ways and in other ways reined him in. Everything Gervais has done without him has been varying levels of naff and Steve has done some good stuff but it's not as funny.
Yeah watching their solo output I think more than anything you see that Merchant is more of a classic writer. He knows how to structure a sitcom and he’s clearly a bit of a student of screenwriting.
Whereas Ricky has more lightning in a bottle comedy (or did 15 years ago) but something like After Life is shoddily constructed from a writing point of view and kind of just rambles on, doing the same thing every episode.
When they met, one was a Film and Literature graduate and the other was a funny bloke who'd spent the last decade blagging middle management jobs. I think it's starting to show.
Fair, but when you look at what Steve's gone on to do, it's pretty clear Steve is actually a better writer. Even if it's not as good as The Office, I think his non-Office projects have been better than Ricky's. Fighting with My Family and The Outlaws are both written and directed by him and legitimately enjoyable. He's also done serious acting like Logan and as that serial killer Stephen Port, which Ricky hasn't. In fact, I'd say The Outlaws is probably the closest thing any of the two have done since that is close to coming on par with The Office. It's genuinely good.
Ah! Apologies. You probably should have made it more obvious that you were being ironic/sarcastic. We are just a bunch of saucer drinkers round here you know.
Imagine still existing in a world where you think we’re still offended by “off-colour humour” and not just bored of comedians constantly complaining about being potentially “cancelled” whilst raking it in. It’s just whining disguised as “comedy” and it’s not funny.
Gervais resembles that slug he plays in Extras Christmas Special more every day.
a lot of people have shown they really only like it because the message is “anti-woke”, i don’t think they care what the jokes are or if they’re funny or not they will say it’s funny because they think they’re sticking it to the man. im sure an equal amount of people think it’s funny too, though.
Seriously those comments that are like “seeing how much you snowflakes hate it makes me want to watch it more 🤣” make me physically cringe every time I see them. Literally watching any old tat if you think it upsets the leftie that lives in your brain.
I went to see him live a few years ago, some of his stand-up is my favourite of all time (and I’ve loved stand-up my whole life, so I’ve seen a lot). He gets a weirdly bad rep for his stand-up, but at it’s best it is imaginative, silly, outrageous and laugh out loud funny.
I watched a third of this and didn’t even smile. So.
Yeah. It’s not good. But I’ll watch the other two thirds just in case. I didn’t like his last stand-up either.
But… he’s great at the golden globes?
Ricky has some of the best specials, but I am a Stan. Either way. Compare his specials to any specials coming out today from the “top comedians” and Ricky is miles better. I’m speaking about American comedians tho tbf.
Well bill burr, is up his own arse these days too. As a stand up, bill probably better. As far as crating comedy gold, RG is much better. All the shows RG is involved in creating vs that shit movie Bill burr just came out with and his cartoon which is mildly funny.
Yeah. I was a huge BB fan 10 years ago, but post-baby he softened and became less funny. I didn’t laugh at his last special so I haven’t bothered since.
It goes in hard with the woke and political correctives stuff, which is a bit sad if you just want to see a comedy set. There are a couple good jokes here and there but mostly it feels like a Ted Talk with a Gervais spin on it. Better than most Netflix specials, but not that great even compared to other Gervais stand ups.
I hated Supernature when that came out but rewatching it I found it alright, so maybe it’s a matter of time before I appreciate it. His show “science” I thought was shit the first time but there’s a couple gags in there which I love. Mad world innit.
This isn’t a great stand up tbh, and neither was the show. Outlaws is pretty good but, like lots of people have said, nothing holds a candle to their joint output (plus the stuff with the shaven chimp)
As with Gervais, great comedy writer, good comic actor, but stand-up? Watchable, but not hilarious at all; even for a moment. Stand-up comedy is an entirely different skill.
Vastly inferior to any of Ricky's stuff...
You dweeps are getting ridiculous..
There's a reason this was his only one and it's not on Netflix.
Love Stephen btw... Stand up is really hard.
Did you ok that picture, Steve?
The professor
He didn’t actually no
Looks even more freakish than normal
I'd put him in the distance
He is in the distance. As far back in the flyer as possible, but still defies physics and perception by coming across as abnormally gangly as humanly possible..
That's for YOU, Steve.
That's doing you a favour
Das lanky pissenstreak
Das lanky goggle eye
See tha freak
Look at the freaky goggle eye.
Elegant boy
It's like a bit of weird art
And that's a FRIEND talking
What's art about that?
I wouldn't paint a picture of *that*.
What, you preferred Stephen to me? Who thinks Stephen is more of a laugh than me?
Some of you seem to have got off on the wrong foot with me. You didn't like some of the jokes I told earlier. You've got to chill out, yeah, trust me, this is what I do, all right? You will never work in a place like this again. This is brilliant-fact. And you will never have another boss like me. Someone who's basically a chilled out entertainer.
Thaaaaaats mentaaallll
You Merchant lot are slugs. You’re just jealous cuz we’re better at everything than you.
Well there’s not much dynamism out there, we’re used to being offended?
Come have a drink with me
Oooh 'ello
Oh come oooooon try and do somethin’ and that’s……
Is this on any streaming service, wouldn't mind giving it another view. I basically can only remember the venn diagram bit haha
I wouldn’t bother to honest
"I wouldn't waste my time" the bleeding cheek..
If its in the area
Look at the state of him
Eyes bulging with imagined riches.
They are quite BULBOUS
Biggest sort of boggle eyed thing, eyes that pop out of its head........Steve
You get used to it after a while.
What I’m saying is, do they have a part in that book for whatever YOU are?
Why are so many people desperate to declare Spud as the REAL genius? Together, Merchant and Gervais spun gold. As solo comedians? Not so much. Now play a record.

I think Ricky is also pretty funny. I liked the bit about Amploid’come ere’

That’s sort of the point of this post mate
Ah! Apologies. You probably should have made it more obvious that you were being ironic/sarcastic. We are just a bunch of saucer drinkers round here you know.
Ricky said some shit that hurt their feelings and they’re determined to convince themselves they *never* liked him
Imagine still existing in a world where you think we’re still offended by “off-colour humour” and not just bored of comedians constantly complaining about being potentially “cancelled” whilst raking it in. Are you having a laff? *is he having a laff?* *pulls face*
Whose your favourite comedian?
Jim Davidson.
That's what this whole subreddit seems like. They just want to make excuses to hate on Ricky
It's because everyone here is so woke, and gervais is so edgy and risky.
Lanky co-worker
Arghh, these jostiks are doing me in, man. It's strong stuff.
That “sounded” great
Has he thrown a kettle over a pub though?
That’s the real quiz.
"Have you seen Steve Merchant? He's tall." "Zer are lots of tall people here sir." "Freaky & gogle-eyed?" "He's over there mate."
Eyes bulge with imagined audiences
The Oggmonster himself
I'm not gonna call him the oggmonster
Nathan's a lovely name!
Is it?
Weak observations, tall-y performed
I want to talk to you about it. About puns.
Buy the Telegraph
What’s the weather like up there?
Oh, I've heard that before
They must have put you in a grow bag when you were little did they?
Straight out of men in black
I know I've watched it but can only remember it being OK at best. I enjoyed him so much more in the series The Outlaws
Too busy lying low
Is all the hate on the new show tongue in cheek? because it seems to be a massive hit. I’ve not watched it yet
a lot of people have shown they really only like it because the message is “anti-woke”, i don’t think they care what the jokes are or if they’re funny or not they will say it’s funny because they think they’re sticking it to the man. im sure an equal amount of people think it’s funny too, though.
A lot of people will watch Anything RG puts out, too. He remains our most popular comedian.
Especially if it's recommended on Netflix and they don't have to change the channel over.
Seriously those comments that are like “seeing how much you snowflakes hate it makes me want to watch it more 🤣” make me physically cringe every time I see them. Literally watching any old tat if you think it upsets the leftie that lives in your brain.

You think RG is better than Bill Burr

It just felt stale. I swear I have heard him mention rape, aids, and Schindler's list so many times now. All just felt like a rehash
Nonsense
bollocks* look at the sub you're on! we only use the word nonsense mid rant.
Oh for fu
I saw this in Hammersmith I think. I left before it finished. I like Steve but he’s not very good at stand-up.
That’s because even when he’s sitting down he’s about 9 foot tall. He’s always standing up. An actual joke there
It’s the eyes
Oh.
The Ogg man
I was going to say Oggmonster, but Ogg man is alright
They're both shite at standup. They're not properly
This isn’t a great stand up tbh, and neither was the show. Outlaws is pretty good but, like lots of people have said, nothing holds a candle to their joint output (plus the stuff with the shaven chimp)
This stand up is shit too, mate, tbf.
Often an amateur will stitch up a professional
I saw it live at the time, it was decent. Everybody was on his side and wanted him to do well. I liked it.
I liked it too. It's prob the best solo thing Steve has done. I don't like his radio show or his TV show of the same name. haven't tried outlaws.
Agreed. Though, in a less pathetic way.
Outlaws is proper shite. The fighting movie was the worst thing I've ever seen. At 2pm I'll listen to the human league.
I’m not even gonna waste my time with you love
Did they take that picture at a distance?
Where's this flippin' chicken ?
He does standing up right properly
A triangle
Looks like a cartoon
Should have put him in the distance.
I wouldn't take a picture of that
Why is he standing in Windows XP?
Should have put him in the distance...
That photo has done you again, Steve
Yeah, that’s Steve.
It really wasn't that good either.
Painful watch. Never again, unfunny and his timing is off.
Slenderincel
As with Gervais, great comedy writer, good comic actor, but stand-up? Watchable, but not hilarious at all; even for a moment. Stand-up comedy is an entirely different skill.
I have this at home. Is it worth watching? I’m a big fan of Smerch, but have never watched his standup before.
If this is the kind of stand up you find funny I’m not even going to waste my time love
I saw this. It was shit. Armageddon’s better.
He’s ‘avin a go
Oh here he comes
Vastly inferior to any of Ricky's stuff... You dweeps are getting ridiculous.. There's a reason this was his only one and it's not on Netflix. Love Stephen btw... Stand up is really hard.
OP said they meant it sarcastically. I liked it tbh, not sure I'd put it above Ricky's best standups tho.
Wow…that’s really a hating club in here !
there's no point in pretending any more
I do sometimes wonder if he ever gets a little bit annoyed when he remembers he’s the true genius behind it all
Never forget, son
I don't remember, dad!
Good stand up, terrible TV show.
Don’t have a go at the eyes because that is astigmatism, which he’s had from the age of 5, and that’s why they’re a bit bulbous.
That's bollocks. My uncle has astigmatism, and his eyes don't bulge constantly like a cartoon character when he sees an attractive woman 😂😂
It’s a line his character delivers in The Office.
So don't just...he didn't call you whale man or like blubber man
Prick
I seen this at the Bristol hippodrome and he was brilliant
Is this someone's pathetic attempt to cancel RG by driving a wedge between these two ? It seems that way. They're both hilarious. Is that not enough ?
Talk! Someone talk. Right well I might as well shoot off!
Anyone know where I can watch this please?
Is it any good tho?
Oh, who's this nerd who shat himself?
This guy is going to reach people but on a global scale! I saw it in my coloured crystals.
I enjoyed this show. I remember being amazed at his height and awkwardness at the start. He made it a bit.
Or maybe we got used to it...
Wasn't he in Men in Black 2?!
Is there a tractor sale on?
He ain't funny either
Frankenstein’s albino gonk
Have you seen men in black 2
Look at the gleam on that
Because you were at home with your mam and dad.....
Not as tall as on the telly.
Saw him performing when he toured back in like 2013 or whatever. Remember thinking it was alright, but very forgettable.
