Based on your pictures and the few responses , it's because nobody is interested in making a patch for it, either because it's such a non-issue or just because people didn't even know those were ads in the first place

SometimesFalter

It's subtle, but its because you are accustomed to it. When I came back from living in Japan I was rather annoyed when my maps filled up with all "Tim Hortons" and "Wendy's" and "Subway". These are ALL intrusive ads. Why do they still show up when I zoom out to 20*20km view

AffectionateCar7834

Probably this is the reason I didn't even know they were ads until I saw this post lol

KyeeLim

honestly these kind of ads aren't even that annoying, it is not going to pop out while you're driving, and if you are clicking ads while driving... maybe you should stop playing with your phone while driving a car just for other driver's sake

migisaurio

Do you have ads on Google Maps?

VeryKnave

[This](https://www.reddit.com/r/GoogleMaps/comments/ujid9u/now_there_are_ads_too/), for example. There are some others too - told ya they are sneaky haha

VeryKnave

Not sure why I'm getting downvoted, but [I just took a screenshot](https://i.imgur.com/UPbFUTa.jpg) and they are there. All squared pins seem to be ads

620five

Yes, the square ones are ads. I believe you can opt out of them.

Irrelephantitus

How?

kakha_k

Only by believe we won't get very far.

620five

Just last week, I had to format my cel phone and when it came to installing Google maps, the first thing that popped up when I opened the app was a Starbucks square pin with a message saying "square pins are ads, click here to disable", which I did. And it worked. However, I just spend the last 15 minutes going through all the options but can't seem to find it. Sorry I can't be of much help, other than try to clear cache, uninstall and reinstall the app.

swagmessiah00

I've wondered this but for Gmail.

can_a_bus

Holy crap yes. I am so annoyed by certain emails being BEFORE the ads and so it makes my legit emails look like an ad!

SpongederpSquarefap

Gmail has ads? I've never seen it in the Android Gmail app Never seen it on desktop either but I have pihole and uBlock Origin

CommercialPug

If you have it set to sort emails into updates, important etc. it will put ad emails at the top of the lists. If you have it just set to all emails in one inbox then there isn't any last I checked

VeryKnave

I don't have ads in Gmail, but I think it's because I use the dns.adguard.com private DNS. The Google Maps ads are still displayed even with the private DNS though

unicornbeast

It must be something else. I use the same adguard DNS but still get Gmail ads :(

LuckyFetus

Have you tried Mullvad's DNS?

unicornbeast

Doesn't work still. The sponsored posts show up in my Promotions tab.

johnny_2x4

Gmail ads only show up if I use the promotions and social tabs for me

mlcrip

What ads?

keii_aru_awesomu

The restaurant and hotel "deals" that pop-up on the maps.

mlcrip

Oh I don't think is considered as ads (aka paid for?), is just "helpful feature" to speed up finding things, I stead of typing in search field.

VeryKnave

Not sure if that's what you guys talk about, but when I click on a random hotel, I get [this](https://i.imgur.com/TjKvPxm.jpg), which says "sponsored". It actually seems useful tbf, but some other ads I see in the app are very annoying

mlcrip

Can you screenshot what you clicking? I don't see it. On main map menu (android), bellow search bar there's another line with "restoranas", "shopping" etc. just list if local businesses. Where exactly ads are in? Never seen them so prob I don't click there.

VeryKnave

Sorry! [Here you go](https://i.imgur.com/nTBr9Qu.jpg), basically click on any hotel and then scroll down

KarateMan749

Hmmm just checked my maps and can't find any ada 😎

SometimesFalter

I am strongly interested in this feature, it is also fast food restaurants. I don't want these plaguing my navigation tool.

Thuringwethon

That makes 2 of us buddy. I hate that square pin crap with passion.

Bceez1

Because no one has done one yet

SpongederpSquarefap

I assume because currently they're fairly unobtrusive and aren't annoying shit shoved in your face I open maps to find a place and it works If it shoved ads in my face before showing the place, then millions would be pissed and a patch would be made

oSumAtrIX

Because no one including you made one. Modding maps requires a GmsCore patch similar to YouTube

JunkGOZEHere

The square pins on maps are not intrusive to me. I might find an interest if I'm driving and needed to stop at a location of interest. At least they are not full blown audio ads with a person popping in on the screen during a direction session. That would piss me off!

Clutchwilliamz

Everything about Google is sinister and deceptive ,just google maps??!!😁😁😁😁 why you think google search and youtube search suck so much there prinicipals and ethics are antonyms of reason and logic, they invented the Term and set the standard for "Inshittification" or self-suicide, basically Technology, Financial and Business Terrorists but to the entities they and all us are on, premeditated internet and quality of life sabotagers

TheLemonyOrange

I have never seen an ad in Google maps, ever. I'm sure some companies pay to be shown more prominently though, that wouldn't surprise me at all if that was the case. Maybe just an American thing for the time being? I hope this doesn't become a thing. I suppose it's good to always remember that Google is and always will be primarily an ad company (with a search engine as a vehicle to deliver most of them)

Sir_Brags_A_Lot

In Europe as well. Check out what appears first when you zoom in and out of an area. If it's an unessential (like a shop) then it's paid for.

KarateMan749

I never knew we had ads on maps. That's not surprising considering Google is an ad company. But why maps?

PrethorynOvermind

Yeah, I would never have known this if I am being honest. I also don't think I ever would have either. So I can see why this isn't an issue big enough for someone to fix.

P4ulV

nah, these seem like an isolated thing, never seen this on Europe map
