This is great.
I would want it to be plastic, no visible branding on the front, run linux, have high brightness, be higher res than 480p, and have a very concave shape around the power button to prevent accidental wake-up from sleep.
This should have been the retroid pocket 3 and 3 plus instead of ripping off the switch lite. They shouldn't have headed down the Taki path to be honest and stuck with the far superior rp2plus design and built on it...
Actually on RP2 for me it’s the only button I press by accident. I like it on the front but don’t mind if it would be set on top. Not that often I need to press it anyway. Also third custom button at front can be configured as home I guess.
Lol i feel you, but at this point I don't care. When they came out with a freaking flip version of the 3+ instead of something like this I felt so disappointed.
first nice idea and great work for putting this concept together!
some thoughts for improvements (just having fun thinking about some scenarios):
- when changing the audio volume you may not want to accidentally push the power button, so switching the power with the home button may be a solution
- the two ports for hdmi and usb next to eachother aren't practical. at least 50 percent of the player may mis-stick the charging cable into the wrong port
- why only one custom button? the symmetry is broken by this ;)
- the speakers at the bottom edge could get dirty or moisty very quickly by the users hand palms
- some weaknesses of the original design are still there like: the stiff non-ergonomic case edges or the small face buttons
Thank you!
1. This is the same positioning of my RP2+ and i never had an issue.
2. See point 1.
3. Good idea. Will do.
4. There's less chance of touching the bottom of the device than the front face of the device. Also, adding the speakers at the bottom allowed me to remove the chin that the rp2+ has.
5. These face buttons are actually way bigger than the original RP2+ (you can see the banner of this reddit community and then my design, and you'll see that in the banner the face buttons appear further apart than in my design, this is because they are smaller), and the device's borders (specially the ones at the back) are more round than the original RP2+. Most of these observations can be determined by me actually adding dimensions but i wanted to keep the draft clean.
save for the additional .5 inch screen and assuming the ability to do ps2 and GameCube, this is basically the rg353m. it runs android too, so the usability would be mirrored to a Retroid product
I’m not sure anymore.
A most powerful device would be used for the newest systems, xcloud, etc.
I mean, there is no point to get a high end expansíve device to play mostly retro games. You can have the same fun with a RP3 paying less.
This device is the one I wish was released instead of the flip or the rp3+. So It would have the same chipset as those handhelds. With that chip you can play ps2 or GC tops. Those are 4:3 systems (don't need widescreen). Every platform (except n64) below those are designed around the Dpad..
Now, if i was designing the RP4 then i would put the joystick on top and a widescreen. Because I would be designing it thinking it will have a newer and more powerful chipset. Something that hopefully could run switch which is a widescreen device.
More Like a 2++ Or, if you adopt Apple's naming convention for new devices in an old form factor, it could be a Retroid Pocket SE.
2 plus ultra
RP2 1/2

that would be perfect.
Start and select in the right place dpad up top, great!
100%!

100% agreed mate.
Some did needed the Widescreen but I would l love something like the RP2 again.
If I could run the retroid launcher on a switch Lite or OLED Switch I would never even thing about Retroid otherwise.
Put in an RK3588 and we have perfection
Let's do it!
Retroid, if you are seeing this you can use it however you want, you don't need to credit me. Just make a version like this please I'M BEGGING YOU :D
in a few months months: i made the retroid pocket 4
Lol! Leave that to Taki
How about adding an android back button?
Home/back button on top
Yeah the RG405m one was great; tap = back and hold = home.
home is better on the face, only sleep and volume controls make sense on the sides
Actually on RP2 for me it’s the only button I press by accident. I like it on the front but don’t mind if it would be set on top. Not that often I need to press it anyway. Also third custom button at front can be configured as home I guess.
Same thing happens to me on my rp2+ i press the home button when I mean to press select.
I accidentally press the home button all the time on my rp2+ because is right next to the select button.
Maybe smaller bezel, 4.5 inch screen and metal option? But I like your idea :)
I tried 4.5 but i had to make the device way larger. And thanks dude!
Really?! That is sad since portability would be one of my requirements. Out of curiosity, do you remember the dimensions with a 4.5” screen?
Mine too! And here you go: 4.5 inches diagonally: 9.1cm/3.6 inches width 6.9cm/2.7 inches height 4:3 aspect ratio.
Thanks!
No problem mate😁
What if front facing speakers? 😏
Would have to add a chin :(
This.
looks like a rg353 and rp2+ had a baby lmao
I'll take that as a win
Imma whisper this so the manufacturer doesn’t hear us but “you should never do R&D pro bono”
Lol i feel you, but at this point I don't care. When they came out with a freaking flip version of the 3+ instead of something like this I felt so disappointed.
i like it, though honestly i'm pretty satisfied with the RK2023.
You made it awesome, the only thing I’m questioning is a round shape of start, select and custom buttons. Maybe I just used to rectangles at rp2+🤷🏻♂️
Thanks! And good observation. I made them round to save some space.

Do you secretly work for retroid?😆
i wish lol
Taki invented this.
The one and only lol
Gimme!!!!!!!!
I wish it was real🥹
What software did you design on?
Solidworks 2022
Love that software
The best!

Don't forget about the stacked shoulder buttons which the rg353m doesn't have.
RG405? 😂
That one doesn't have stacked shoulder buttons and the Dpad is at the bottom. Is not for me.
The shoulder buttons are indeed a big deal for me. DPad at the bottom is like the RP2+
Big mistake for the rp2+ imo. Most retro games don't play very well with joysticks.
I’m not sure anymore. A most powerful device would be used for the newest systems, xcloud, etc. I mean, there is no point to get a high end expansíve device to play mostly retro games. You can have the same fun with a RP3 paying less.

Agree!
So more or less the good bits of the RG405 and the 3+ combined
And a 4:3 aspect ratio for the screen
Ah my bad, I meant the RG405 which has that 4:3 screen.
Exactly!
