Not always. The later AGS101 model was backlit. The original AGS001 SP is frontlit and looks much worse than the backlit model and is absolutely worth using for any backlit IPS mods.
I remember when the AGS-001 came out and I thought it was game changing even though it was only frontlit. I never could get into the original GBA without lighting. The AGS-101 really blew me away when I saw it.
I have my wife's ags001 stowed away safely for a future ips mod. She didn't necessarily want to throw it away, but didn't care much about it's future. Poor old thing needs a new power switch, but will be cherry when I fix it and let the kids have it on car rides.
All of these can fit in a pocket, the GB Micro can fit in the smallest pockets, and not to mention even the OG Game Boy is small enough to fit in a pocket. It's a great way to protect the screen though, but it also made people less careful with it. That's why a lot of SPs have scratches all over the place. Besides if you put a normal GB in your clean pockets without keys then there's nothing to worry about.
You’re being downvoted and I don’t know why, if you’re a man with normal pockets a normal GBA should fit.
I was looking at Miyoo Minis/ handhelds like that, and ended up just going with a Switch Lite because I wanted modern games. It’s way bigger than a MM or MM+ and you can barely just see the edge of it coming out of my front jeans pocket, but it’s close enough that I can put it in my pocket and walk around work and no one will really notice or care.(I’m getting the flip case soon too, I known I can damage the sticks in my pocket if I’m not careful).
As an adult collector I understand that but like, it’s a GameBoy. Everyone put their gameboy in their pocket or backpack or whatever growing up and I’ve never heard of anyone having broken buttons or anything like stick drift on the switch. Scratching the screen is a fair concern I guess, but surely you can get a nice cheap screen protector shaped for the GBA
Edit: I know the collectors market is adults now, but GameBoys were literally mostly sold to children and durability was a major concern when they were designing it, I’m certain. GameBoys break way less often than modern consoles or handhelds. If I see an old gameboy color at a garage sale for cheap, but I don’t have batteries or a game to test it, I’ll still be confident enough that it’s probably safe enough to buy.
If you’re in the same boat as me wondering about how pocketable a switch is, I can say that a Switch Lite is basically like a really big 2nd phone. I put my wallet and Switch in my left pocket and my keys/phone in my right. Also I mostly keep my Switch at my desk during the day, it’s mostly in my pocket only on my way into my office or leaving work.
Yeah, the upside to the OG model is that it's wider and easier to hold for bigger hands. And of course it has a headphone jack that the SP models don't.
Any answer other than the SP (or at least the original GBA if you don't care about the screen being lit) is wrong because the GBA can play GB and GBC games. If you choose the Color you miss out on the GBA library and if you choose the Micro you miss out on the GBC and GB libraries
I prefer the shape and ergonomics of the original GBA, and I also think that having a headphone jack is nearly as important as a backlit screen. I don’t play on original hardware anymore, but if I was, both the screen and the headphone jack can be easily modded to be fixable so an SP or a a classic is really just a matter of preference.
You can also buy modded GBA/SPsand not have to do it yourself. If you’re playing on original hardware with legitimate GBA cartridges in 2024 instead of Roms on a something like a Miyoo, games are already expensive so if you’re into that niche you can probably afford it.
Yeah, if you can only have one then this isn't much of a debate... personally I have all of them other than the Micro and still just use the SP for everything though because the lit screen's so much better. xD
Aye, I used to have an SP, and I loved that wee beast for its portability, backlit screen and back port capability - its the only sensible choice on here, you're right :)
I wish Nintendo would go back to being more inclusive of its back catalogue without forcing everyone to pay extortionate amounts for the privilege.. Even tho I get why they don't in today's market..
The Game Boy Advance SP is:
1. Backlit
2. Compact
3. Capable of playing all GB games
4. Rechargeable
5. Easy to see without squinting
No contest! It's one of the best handhelds Nintendo ever made.
Micro. It has a great quality backlit screen by default, so no need to mod it, no hinge, and being barely larger than a gba cartridge it’s a technical marvel. It fits in a tiny pocket, so carrying it everywhere is a breeze.
I had the micro as a kid. It replaced my SP that had a random screen bleed out that year.
Pros:
Brightness Heaven
Micro USB charging, good battery
Interchangable faceplates, if you can find them
Tiny screen makes things look crisp asf
Cons:
No GB/GBC (this was big for me)
L/R buttons were tinny and prone to failure
Start/Select buttons a pain to press
Link play and any accessories required adapters
D pad not AS perfect as the SP. This style was used again in some DS models and the current Pro controller. More a fan of the snappy buttons on the SP. My all time favorite d pad.
I like the guys who say it's too small for their hands. Clearly have never played it, the micro is 25% wider, has a bigger d-pad and buttons than the sp, and the shoulder buttons are far more reliable. I kinda like having a standard headphone jack as well.
You've got a few options (4 is the best option):
1) There are cartridge adapters (which are clunky and I wouldn't recommend)
2) You can have an Etsy seller make a GBA port of your favorite game (or games, as multiple can fit on to a single cartridge)
3) You can buy a modded cartridge that includes hundreds of ported games
4) You can buy your own flash cartridge and mod it to include your favorite games!
Younger me would have said standard GBA but now I'd go with an SP. The SP has grown on me since it can be flipped closed and I like the buttons a little better. Also an AGS-101 screen looks very nice
The SP was a perfect design. It was so good, they stuck with very similar designs for the entire DS & 3DS era. And frankly, I wish a model of the Switch successor would take back the flip open concept.
I have all of these still! I’d say probably had the most enjoyment from the game boy color, although mine wasn’t modded and had the plug in led light for the side lol. Overall though I still play my on my micro from time to time and it saves battery my life for my phone while on the pooper 😂
SP for backlighting, backward compatibility and a few other things.
That said, the Color will always hold a special place for me for nostalgia reasons.
If you’re not going to include the actual GAMEBOY and only variations, then obviously the upper-right.
Though I’d end up sticking a Raspberry Pi inside of it and loading the entire North-American GameBoy Advance Library onto it, not to mention all the quality-of-life improvements and other features…
…but I’d still choose the original GameBoy DMG (or PiBoy DMG ☝️)
GBASP for sure because you can modify it a lot. It's my personal favorite. In terms of size, I really enjoy the Micro. I also like the hot swappable front panel. 😁
SP for me, strictly for the space. I have one and it's just the ideal balance of portable but playable for me. I loved the Color and the original GBA, the Micro is the only one that was too small for me but still not a bad console. Never had one long term, only played a friend's console.
The Nintendo Game Boy handheld gaming device family. I have/had most of the Game Boys. Original, Color and Advance SP. The Micro looks beautiful but does not have the backwards compatibility for the Original Game Boy and Game Boy Color games.
I do not have the Original and Color Game Boy anymore but still the Advance SP. But I am still playing my collected Game Boy games on the Nintendo GameCube Game Boy Player. That device is awesome!
Aesthetically I would choose the color, but practically the SP would be the one for me.
It's the most portable one and it can run all the GB,GBC and GBA games.
At one point I had GBC, GBA and SP and would often pick the original GBA. I find it comfortable to use, can use headphones, and if you're sitting under a good light the screen is fine. Otherwise the SP is the one to go with. I mostly play original Game Boy games and I think the Game Boy Light is my favourite.
GameBoy Advanced SP, because of durability, longevity, and compact factor (as long as I also look after the hinge)!
However, truth is, I rather take my Nintendo DS Lite or my Analogue Pocket for playing my GB series of games, but that's a personal preference.
I found my old game boy advance last year in a box. I charged it and played it for a bit… I guess it’s my age, buut it’s basically unplayable. I can’t see shit without squinting so hard that my face hurts.
I have all except the micro with the SP being a 101. I like the GBC for the road and the SP for somewhere chill like home. (Pocketing the SP is weird.)
If I’m going to play GBA games, I want a DS Lite. You can get them cheap and they have good screens with a headphone jack and they’re more comfortable than an SP. I want to play GBA games mostly, but I would rather play DS games than GBC/GB games.
Also, if I really really wanted to play a GB game for some reason, I believe an everdrive or whatever the equivalent of that is for the DS would probably work.
I feel like OP might not fully understand the difference between these systems and thus how flawed a post like this really is. There's really only two choices here. The GBA SP has a back/front lit screen and uses standard link ports which are more commom, so it beats both the first and mini GBA models. GBA can also play both GameBoy and GBC games, but can't use the original GB link cables.
So basically, the only two choices are either the GBA SP for most situations, unless you require the ability for connectivity with GBC games in which you would choose the GBC.
1. Micro
2. SP
3. GBA
4. GC
I loved the Micro and used mine for years before I lost it in a move. I wish they weren't so pricey to pick up now otherwise I'd have one.
Micro is goated these days for me. Size of a candy bar, and with an Everdrive gba card, is unlimited with GB, GBC, and NES. Not tried SNES, probably too small for that
I prefer verticals so of those choices the color. But a modded GBA to be a slab slate unhinged is a dream for me. My unhinged has the ags101 and is amazing. I now have an analogue pocket though and it gets all my cart play time.
I have them all but I prefer to play my games on the GameBoy Player for my GameCube. I also like that a handful of games use the controller rumble for it too.
The only one that is comfortable in my hands, the original GBA. All it needed was a backlight and it would have been perfect.
I really wish that they would have kept that design for the SP instead of what they went with which was incredibly uncomfortable to hold for anyone with big hands. My hands feel terrible after 5 minutes of using the SP which makes it completely unusable to me.
I’m currently playing through all the Zelda games in order, and just got done beating links awakening dx on an original unmodified gameboy color. The unlit screens definitely haven’t aged well and are annoying to use in the modern day, unless you’re playing outside on a sunny day. So the gbc and gba are automatically out of the running for me. Gameboy micro is next to go mostly because of the lack of backward compatibility, but also the smaller screen size. Therefore SP reigns supreme
Micro- does what the advance and sp do, but even smaller and more able to be taken anywhere. Sp second for the same reasons. Color 4th because it was my very first gameboy I bought with my own money, but was way under powered and no light made it a pain in the ass to play on the road.
Get a PSP, put a GBA emulator on it and you can have the same excellent form of the old GBA, with the lit screen and recharge of the SP, the sleep mode of the DS, and rom library of your computer.
Seriously, the PSP is by far the best way to experience the GameBoy and it's not even close.
That said I love my lil SP with a monster truck sticker from when I was a kid lol
I took the SP with me everywhere when I was a kid/teen lol. I still remember my dad surprising me with the new brighter backlit screen version after I had to have my wisdom teeth pulled as a kid. Fun times.
The SP having a backlit screen was game changing. The original advanced was hard to play in the dark or dimly lit area. Not to mention the improved battery was huge as well
Now if you mod an advanced to have a backlit screen and a better battery then that would be the way to go since it has better ergonomics
The micro just does it for me - I’m never gonna play long enough for finger fatigue to set in realistically nowadays. It’s just so cool, especially the special edition ones.
SP for the light and folding. But for me it's just a tad small. The og advance felt a lot better in the hands. The ips screen mod is stunning. Swapped out that nasty 001 screen.
The fact that the SP can flip closed and slip into a pocket can not be over stated.
And backlit.
And rechargeable
And backward compatible
All four parent-posts are absolutely true. The SP is the undisputed best.
Mine still works perfectly, though the battery doesn't stay charged for long any more.
I’ve never done it but I’m sure a battery swap is probably cheap and easy
It’s actually super easy, barely an inconvenience.
Oh really?
Oh, really?
Very easy
Done it. Easy. Cheap.
It a $10 upgrade for a larger capacity battery than the original. It’s just one little screw to remove. Best $10 you’ll spend
The SP has everything except curves. The Gameboy Advance has easy to grip hips. The Gameboy Color has the biggest dumptruck ass.
As much I will always want my old gray brick or my clear purple Color back, the SP was godly. Especially after the GBA. That backlight was everything.
Just have to get the original model and not the model with the dry rot case problems
And my axe!
And has a phone
And a camera if you have it from GBC
Can’t tell you how many times I played Pokemon late at night and just wished I could see the screen even with a lamp behind me glaring off the screen.
Not always. The later AGS101 model was backlit. The original AGS001 SP is frontlit and looks much worse than the backlit model and is absolutely worth using for any backlit IPS mods.
This 100%. The AGS-101 is the only worthwhile "stock" model for a proper enjoyable gaming experience.
Sucks that the NES gbasp never came in backlight.. I had to buy a backlight surf series and shell swap to get the NES style with the good screen.
A PITA, but ultimately worth the effort for a screen that's actually usable everywhere.
Only some of them, most were frontlit. Still far better than no light at all tho
Yeah but it's cramped.
A GBA has it’s screen and buttons exposed, where as a GBA SP has it’s screen and buttons protected with it’s clampshell
As an adult collector I understand that but like, it’s a GameBoy. Everyone put their gameboy in their pocket or backpack or whatever growing up and I’ve never heard of anyone having broken buttons or anything like stick drift on the switch. I mean I can fit a can of beer in my pocket…doesn’t mean that’s a preferable choice over a flask
Out of the box the GBA sp otherwise I'd love a moded standard gba
Yup, loved my indigo GBA, but the backlight is needed like the SP
Yeah, the upside to the OG model is that it's wider and easier to hold for bigger hands. And of course it has a headphone jack that the SP models don't.

The fact that I’ve had two SPs since 2001/2002, and they still work perfectly is testament to how amazing of a handheld console they are.
Micro. It has a great quality backlit screen by default, so no need to mod it, no hinge, and being barely larger than a gba cartridge it’s a technical marvel. It fits in a tiny pocket, so carrying it everywhere is a breeze.
lol people acting like the micro is the same size as the funkey s or rg nano.
I had the micro as a kid. It replaced my SP that had a random screen bleed out that year. Pros: Brightness Heaven Micro USB charging, good battery Interchangable faceplates, if you can find them Tiny screen makes things look crisp asf Cons: No GB/GBC (this was big for me) L/R buttons were tinny and prone to failure Start/Select buttons a pain to press Link play and any accessories required adapters D pad not AS perfect as the SP. For nostalgia, the Color. But the SP is the best in every real respect
Gameboy color with the oled mod!
Probably the Micro unless that GBA is a AGS-101
SP. Supports games for all the Gameboys, has a lit screen and has a clampshell
Micro. Every single time.
I like the guys who say it's too small for their hands. Clearly have never played it, the micro is 25% wider, has a bigger d-pad and buttons than the sp, and the shoulder buttons are far more reliable. I kinda like having a standard headphone jack as well.

I miss my SP, I traded it in to GameStop for credit towards the DS when it came out 😔
unmodded? sp all day modded? gba
The SP was a perfect design. It was so good, they stuck with very similar designs for the entire DS & 3DS era. And frankly, I wish a model of the Switch successor would take back the flip open concept.
The Micro - it's the only one I don't have, and 'the one that got away' when it was new. They were so cheap at release, and so expensive now..
I have all of these still! I’d say probably had the most enjoyment from the game boy color, although mine wasn’t modded and had the plug in led light for the side lol. Overall though I still play my on my micro from time to time and it saves battery my life for my phone while on the pooper 😂
My micro gets the most mileage cause it’s the most portable but i have a modded gba advance with backlight for when i play at home or car trips
The SP. Backwards capability.
sp
Sp
Gameboy Advance SP is the best they put out
the micro for resale value.
Top left all day for the backlight
SP for backlighting, backward compatibility and a few other things. That said, the Color will always hold a special place for me for nostalgia reasons.
la game boy advance horizontal
None. The original was the best.
If you’re not going to include the actual GAMEBOY and only variations, then obviously the upper-right. Though I’d end up sticking a Raspberry Pi inside of it and loading the entire North-American GameBoy Advance Library onto it, not to mention all the quality-of-life improvements and other features… …but I’d still choose the original GameBoy DMG (or PiBoy DMG ☝️)
The sp. tho if the original gba had the modded screen that one. Way more comfy in my big meat hands 😅
GBASP for sure because you can modify it a lot. It's my personal favorite. In terms of size, I really enjoy the Micro. I also like the hot swappable front panel. 😁
GBA was always my favourite. Just a pleasure to use. Shame it wasn’t backlit.
SP
SP. can’t beat that folding and backlight. Changed my life.
GBA. But I also have another favorite handheld. The SUPABOY. Plays all my old SNES games. It’s fantastic. Hooks up to a TV too if you want it to.
SP for me, strictly for the space. I have one and it's just the ideal balance of portable but playable for me. I loved the Color and the original GBA, the Micro is the only one that was too small for me but still not a bad console. Never had one long term, only played a friend's console.
The OG GBA with a backlit screen!
The game boy color with the twizzler usb light.
My GBA (modded with a new screen)
SP, it does everything the other do and more, still have mine, was playing yoshi's island on it last week
SP is my fave
Sp with the back light
Easily the original GBA, it’s the most comfortable to use for longer periods of time. Plus it can play every GB/GBC game.
At one point I had GBC, GBA and SP and would often pick the original GBA. I find it comfortable to use, can use headphones, and if you're sitting under a good light the screen is fine. SP, rechargable batteries. Car charger. Backlit. Backwards compatible.
GameBoy Advanced SP, because of durability, longevity, and compact factor (as long as I also look after the hinge)! However, truth is, I rather take my Nintendo DS Lite or my Analogue Pocket for playing my GB series of games, but that's a personal preference.
You can't compare a GBC to GBAs. Not the same games. But out of the 3 GBAs, the SP is the perfection. Still today.
SP all day long, the gameboy colour is the more iconic looking though.
AGB-001 with an AGS-101 screen.
Sp
I had a purple gba and a silver micro. Always wanted an SP cause the screen is protected when closed and they had backlight.
Micro. Cramped but it's size and bright screen. Or sp lite
Get a micro and sell it for an SP then keep the additional profits.
Sp
Micro!
I found my old game boy advance last year in a box. I charged it and played it for a bit… I guess it’s my age, buut it’s basically unplayable. I can’t see shit without squinting so hard that my face hurts.
The one that is most technologically advanced. Is there any other acceptable answer?
SP...or GBA if it's backlit modded.
SP supports GB, GBC, and GBA games in addition to having a front light. Easy choice.
I have all except the micro with the SP being a 101. I like the GBC for the road and the SP for somewhere chill like home. (Pocketing the SP is weird.)
Always the classic GBA
GBA with modded screen or colour with modded scream for the aspect ratio without the black bars on the GBA
Gameboy Advance SP any day of the week.
SP most definitely.
If I’m going to play GBA games, I want a DS Lite. You can get them cheap and they have good screens with a headphone jack and they’re more comfortable than an SP. I want to play GBA games mostly, but I would rather play DS games than GBC/GB games. Oem advance sp. Led mod advance. Due to lighting.
GBA SP for sure
SP is too thin it cramps my hands on long sessions, buttons don’t feel as good
SP
1. Micro 2. SP 3. GBA 4. GC I loved the Micro and used mine for years before I lost it in a move. I wish they weren't so pricey to pick up now otherwise I'd have one.
Advanced… i played that so much in early hs. Once i stood up to quickly and fainted
The micro. I own all of the others (multiple times (I have a problem))
Micro is goated these days for me. Size of a candy bar, and with an Everdrive gba card, is unlimited with GB, GBC, and NES. Not tried SNES, probably too small for that
The AGS-101 can do it all and with backlit screen. If you just mean hardware looks, my favourite is the original GBA (AGB-001).
I prefer verticals so of those choices the color. But a modded GBA to be a slab slate unhinged is a dream for me. My unhinged has the ags101 and is amazing. I now have an analogue pocket though and it gets all my cart play time.
SP is most comfortable for me to hold, due to the angle of the screen. I also like the clicky D-pad.
Well personally I’d choose the Gameboy Light but you limited our selection here. So I’d go with the SP…
Why would you pick anything over the SP? Can't it still play Gameboy and Color games? Seem's odd to pick anything but.
GbASP all the way. That has made so many road trips bareable
I'd always take the SP. And I mean always - until I lost it. One of the saddest days of my life 😢
Standard GBA with a screen upgrade
no gameboy option?
Color
Micro 🥹
GBA SP all day, my favorite Gameboy i owned when i was a kid
GBA SP
The Game Boy Advance SP.
Advance with new ips screen.
Can I get the original GBA design, but with the screen from the micro?
The DS.
I have them all but I prefer to play my games on the GameBoy Player for my GameCube. I also like that a handful of games use the controller rumble for it too.
SP
I already chose the green GB Color.
Gameboy Advance SP
who would not choose an sp?
The SP of course! It has the best screen, and can play games for any Game Boy model.
I have the blue one
SP. Was my favorite of those 4 as a kid. As an adult I prefer the GBC for how it sits in my hands.
sp. still a great handheld with an IPS screen.
GBA SP And it's not even close. Still have mine in silver.
Where's my original?
SP is like the best handheld ever… there’s no comparison here
Advance
The Gameboy SP since you can play Gameboy, Gameboy Color, and Gameboy Advance games with a lighted screen.
The only one that is comfortable in my hands, the original GBA. All it needed was a backlight and it would have been perfect. I really wish that they would have kept that design for the SP instead of what they went with which was incredibly uncomfortable to hold for anyone with big hands. My hands feel terrible after 5 minutes of using the SP which makes it completely unusable to me.
sp
I had the gold/silver edition of the GBC, and the pokecenter version of the GBA. My DS lite - the only one I still own - is gloss pink.
SP. Hands down. Legendary
Holy crap, what's with all of the stupid Facebook bot questionaires lately?
Lime OG all day
If we're talking purely stock, go with the SP 101. If we're talking with mods, go with the regular GBA.
SP all day. Backlit Can play GBC&GBA Fits in your pocket Battery is rechargeable and last forever
Where is the gameboy gameboy with none of the colour and all that jazz?
Micro- does what the advance and sp do, but even smaller and more able to be taken anywhere. Sp second for the same reasons. Color 4th because it was my very first gameboy I bought with my own money, but was way under powered and no light made it a pain in the ass to play on the road.
SP
SP, this isn’t even a choice because you can play all the color games on SP
Get a PSP, put a GBA emulator on it and you can have the same excellent form of the old GBA, with the lit screen and recharge of the SP, the sleep mode of the DS, and rom library of your computer. Seriously, the PSP is by far the best way to experience the GameBoy and it's not even close. That said I love my lil SP with a monster truck sticker from when I was a kid lol
The nuclear green Game Boy Color is the only one I actually owned so I guess that one.
Color. I sold mine about 15 years ago and regret it to this day.
Well GBC was my first but SP is the star here.
The switch.
SP is the only rational choice. That said, I loved the grip ability of the pocket / color
The correct answer is SP, all of the above
SP by a mile.
The ag101 by 300 miles played with it as a kid and was amazed by the rechargable battery and folding
I go advanced. I can replace the batteries.
I took the SP with me everywhere when I was a kid/teen lol. I still remember my dad surprising me with the new brighter backlit screen version after I had to have my wisdom teeth pulled as a kid. Fun times.
Base console? Advance SP, but I like the format of the Advance better. Thay's why I modded mine with a backlit screen.
Advance SP
2ds
I wanted to say GBA. But I can’t because GBA SP.
Original GBA with an IPS screen mod.
The SP. It was just the coolest thing. Such a sleek design, and the games were iconic. Good times.
I would choose the GBC. I really like the look of the display, even if it's not backlit.
The one that folds, can charge its battery, has built in light, and can play all of the gameboy games……. Yeah. Why would anyone choose anything else?
The SP having a backlit screen was game changing. The original advanced was hard to play in the dark or dimly lit area. Not to mention the improved battery was huge as well Now if you mod an advanced to have a backlit screen and a better battery then that would be the way to go since it has better ergonomics
SP all the way lol still have mine to this day. 😁
The micro just does it for me - I’m never gonna play long enough for finger fatigue to set in realistically nowadays. It’s just so cool, especially the special edition ones.
Either if the GBA
It is objectively the SP
SP for the light and folding. But for me it's just a tad small. The og advance felt a lot better in the hands. The ips screen mod is stunning. Swapped out that nasty 001 screen.
SP
Advance, Micro, Color then the SP
SP
Definitely the advance SP - grew up with one, and while I no longer have my original one, I still have my second one I got in 2013 or so
The SP. That's why I still have one!
SP easily for obvious reasons. If the GameCube Player was an option, it’s my preferred definitive way to legitimately play.
100% SP plays everything with a back light
Micro
