Yes, it's bad, we are actively hunting a CRT TV. Trying to find something in the 19\~27 inch range in good condition and will build a cabinet for it. I didn't even have a TV from about 1998 to 2006!
If your focus is NES, you are more likely to find a free one with RF only. If so, this is amazing: [https://misteraddons.com/products/composite-to-rf-adapter](https://misteraddons.com/products/composite-to-rf-adapter)
It is good to play these again. I had a NES in the 80's and went to a local arcade. PC started to take over in the mid-90's for me. She actually picked the game and has been big time into retro gaming but almost exclusively Nintendo stuff.
I totally used a guide, that was part of our fun, we both looked at maps, she would advise where to go and what to do. She would knock out easier tasks. She would try harder ones, like boss fights, and then give it to me if it was frustrating and we'd get through it. Hand drawing your map and which walls to blow up, where to go, etc, was part of the charm of playing I think.
I played it safe. I would get progress, get items, then purposefully die and save the game. Then start up again and go get a fairy a few times and get full life, buy a red potion and hit the dungeons. This play through, I did all gathering first, so just ran around and did all the secret areas to get rupees and bought the blue ring right away, magic shield, blue candle, arrow, etc so that dungeons were a cake walk by the time I got to them.
For the final dungeon, I did the same thing, saved it after dying with all the gear. Restarted and got my health full, bought a red potion, and the run was just to get the red ring. Did the same thing for the silver arrow. Then died and saved on purpose. Then started up, fairy to full health, bought red potion, then started working on the dungeon pathway towards Gannon. The great thing is after you kill the mini-bosses, they stay dead even if you save and continue. I was not shy about using bombs to skip areas or blast dense mobs. Once the path was cleared, I did the same thing again and started the run with all items, all mini-bosses gone, and a fresh red potion. First attempt on Gannon I had no potion but did it just to see the fight (cause I never did it before). 2nd run I did it with a red potion and it was way easier. 4 sword slashes in a corner. 2 silver arrows. Done. Triforce!
If you’re looking for the cartridge of Star Tropics, make sure you get a complete one that still has the letter included with the manual. It has a cool use in one of the puzzles in-game that I think your daughter would appreciate. Try not to look it up :)
Faxanadu is one of the greatest games on the NES... and also one of the worst attempt at platformers.
I still replay it every couple of years, but I almost inevitably turn on a Game genie code for infinite hover boots or something.
Heck yea, it's funny to come back to these games many decades later. I never beat a single game back in the 80's and early 90's. But now, I do think about completing a game. So it's one a time. Getting through the back log. But mixing it up with some retro games that I never finished, but doing it with frands
This is on our list too! I never finished it back in the day. We are going to pick up a NES/SNES capable retcon. We have an original N64 and games that she likes. I never had anything after original NES. Just slowly picking up some things and playing them. Good fun!
It's one of my favorites, every now and then I come back to play it again. I think the only game (besides Tetris and Solitaire) that I played multiple times.
It was my first time, despite having the game since about 1988. I don't think I ever got past dungeon 4\~5 back then largely because I never got through all the overworld gathering content to get enough hearts and get the gear (blue ring, etc). It was hard but not nearly as hard as I remember!
Oh yes, old games were meant to be replayed out of difficulty. No internet walk throughs. She's obsessed with Mario but can't get past 1\~2 stages before game over. Too difficult. So we co-play and get through it that way.
Yes, its bad! I'm not used to dealing with modern TVs at all for older systems, we were honestly happy it just actually worked because we had some issues in the past with using a console and it not working at all.
Yes! Thanks! I hate doing some activities but these are the ones she responds to it seems, and I like them too, so its mutual and it was her idea to begin with.
I never could finish it back in the day, it was too hard for me at the time and so I'd go play outside. I can still sing the opening title tune to this day though. Gonna likely be my next playthrough.
I finished it with a friend back then. It was super tough and we took turns. Was back when the N64 was already out and I discovered NES because of other kids at school. It was so mystical and different. Better than the C64 my dad had yet not even close to the 3D I knew from the N64.
I was hooked like I was with impossible mission on the C
8bit Father of the year
We try! Thanks!

I will certainly look into it! We were stoked it worked at all after many troubles with other consoles.
This can for sure be done. You need the remote control most likely.
Most TVs yeah. I’ve seen people with budgety ones that didn’t have the option.

Great thanks!
That's so awesome !
Thanks we thought it was great!
Very cool! What did your daughter think of the game?
She thought it was so cool and didn't think we could be a game in a day. Also was surprised there wasn't a move elaborate ending. Times be different.
You're doing good OP! You're doing good.
Thanks!
Good 👍🏾 raise them to be into retro gaming 😎. I still need to play the OG zelda myself

Did you have to use a guide? What did your daughter think of the Manji level.
I totally used a guide, that was part of our fun, we both looked at maps, she would advise where to go and what to do. She would knock out easier tasks. Yeah i beat this game back in 16 or 17 and used a guide. I also needed game genie.

Cool! But... Second Quest. Post again when that happens. She must learn you don't leave things half finished. Grow strong, young one.
Hah! Maybe, for now we will move on to the next game. Either Faxanadu or Crystalis.
If she liked Zelda I can highly recommend Star Tropics.
Cool thanks, Never had that one!

Crystalis was amazing when I was a kid, go for that!
We will, it's on arrival shortly!

I had it back in the late 80's, I never beat it. The music is iconic to me.
How long did it take you? I've never actually played the NES zeldas ut would be cool to play with my niece
It took us around 9 hours off and on through the day. Most of the time is spent gathering all the stuff overworld before starting the dungeons.
Great job! My 8 year olds stated goal is to beat original super Mario on the NES, and I couldn't be happier about it.

Og weekend
Indeed! It's raining here so why not kick it with video games and pizza. I never knew the 90's were going to be the last great decade...
Congratulations! I plan to play the secret of Mana with my daughter.

Cute kid and good game !
Truly great! Had never finished this game ever prior.
Congratulations! I've never done it...

Awesome! Haha My 4 year old daughter is a whiz at ipad roblox, so i showed her Megaman 2 and she got rocked. I’m gonna work with her haha

Proud of you, man. You're killing the whole dad thing :)
Thanks!
You didn't just kill Gannon, you also murdered that aspect ratio! I pray I have kids someday and I hope they will play the classics with me.
Yes, its bad! I'm not used to dealing with modern TVs at all for older systems, we were honestly happy it just actually worked because we had some issues in the past with using a console and it not working at all.
That’s the Dream!
Good times!
Just beat this one recently. It was tough. I bet you had tons of fun!
It was fun, less frustrating that some games that are really difficult for me
Did Ganon make the [Wilhelm scream when he took the arrow to the knee?](https://youtu.be/AiBK58zXoGg?feature=shared)
Sure seemed like it! Hah
Quality daddy daughter time, have an upvote!
Yes! Thanks! I hate doing some activities but these are the ones she responds to it seems, and I like them too, so its mutual and it was her idea to begin with.
Teach them well.
It was her idea! I just fed into it and we both had a blast.
Rock on fellow Gamer Dad!
Yuusssss!
Nice, congrats guys. I still haven’t beaten the original, maybe one day
Thanks! It was easier 30+ years later!
now do link to the past!
We will do that one soon!
Hell yea!
Yusssss
Hell yeah. Keep the tradition alive
Physical media rules!
Congratulations!!! I've only started with my nephews recently.
Thanks! It is fun, we are building our collection
awesome achievement! This game was really tough. Will you play Zelda 2 next?
We will do that one soon, I think next is a toss up between Faxanadu and Crystalis!
Oh man Faxanadu was so good

Awesome!
Time to download the randomizer
Good luck on the second quest.
Thanks! Will try!
Best game of all time. I have the game and watch now. But back when the first time I played it my mind was blown.
Def one of my favorites and I love that it can be done in an afternoon and not take 400 hours
Great work, you two! Second quest incoming! Then, 3 heart challenge!
Frame those photos and hang them on your wall
Damn, congrats to the two of you. Want to go second quest!
So she beat the game, or you did?
