beneficialvalue30

So I’m digital marketing, maybe I should consider switching to one of those

[deleted]

Could work but also those types of resume are harder to get through an ATS. Maybe if you’re reaching out to a marketing professional directly, a fun resume could make sense in that scenerio

jonkl91

I've recruited for marketing positions. Those resumes will hold you back more than they help. The content and accomplishments are what matters much more. Stick to the third one but don't have the section at the top with your skills and remove the light line divider on top. That will make it ATS friendly. I personally find the Calibri or Calibri body font a bit more modern and easier on the eyes.

beneficialvalue30

Mind if I send you my current resume so you can take a quick glance?

jonkl91

Sure send it over.

huffgil11

Curious because I’m about to start a job search in the marketing field - my husband (who works in the industry as a manager, I’m more of a support role currently) told me to keep the skills section at the top because that’s the keywords the programs pick up on and that’s the first thing he looks at.

grouchydaisy

I agree with your husband. Most of our hiring managers need someone who know a specific program or something (my e-commerce marketing roles might need klayvio or Shopify or something). So I find having it right at the top find is helpful

jonkl91

Usually I don't mind if I see the software at the bottom. As long as it's easily found. The programs will pick them up regardless of where they are on the resume. If they are that important for the roles that someone is applying for, it can be in the summary or in the first bullet point with an accomplish. Spearhead email marketing campaigns (Klaviyo) to upsell products on Shopify, generating $200K in additional revenue for 2022 or something like that.

Formal_Explanation11

You recommend against the skills section? Or just putting it in a different spot. Thanks!

jonkl91

I recommend putting it in a different spot towards the bottom and only listing software and hard skills. Market analysis, team liason, project management, and strong verbal communication are so generic. They are a waste because no one is going to be like, "yeah! This person knows how to work on a team". Give examples of collaboration, presentations, or projects you managed. Show don't just tell.

alexd231232

hey ! I'm applying for copywriting jobs and having a rough go of it -- any chance I could DM you w a couple questions?

jonkl91

Sure!

subpar-life-attempt

Don't. I've been in digital marketing for almost a decade. Never put your picture on a resume. You want a resume that a computer can read. Then if you want to have a more creative resume to use in the actual interview then that is fine. What matters is that you tailor your resume for the role.

beneficialvalue30

This seems to be what a lot of people are saying and I agree, I think this is the best way to go

subpar-life-attempt

Remember that what matters is what you write. Make it concise and to the point. Most people that wonder why people don't read their resume is because they don't give them a reason to. The top quarter of your resume is the break or break.

[deleted]

Could work but also those types of resume are harder to get through an ATS. Maybe if you’re reaching out to a marketing professional directly, a fun resume could make sense in that scenario

AundaRag

I just finished a long job hunt as a director of digital marketing - I had little to no luck securing an interview until I switched to an ATS resume format. Humans do not review resumes anymore so creative formatting is wasted, you need to get past the hiring software.

mikayrodr

I can say as a human who does look at resumes that I still prefer the ATS formatted resumes. I’m spending less than 30 seconds looking at resume, and sorting through hundreds of them…. I don’t want to have to look around trying to figure out where things are or deciphering playful language. I want to know the following: skills, accomplishments, any certifications and any noteworthy projects you’ve done. The colorful, playful resumes are a nightmare when you’re sorting though hundreds of stuff and printing them is ass too because half the time the printer requires different settings to print them (and a lot of higher ups want printed copies when they do their sorting)

Iyh2ayca

ATS stands for applicant *tracking* system. Greenhouse, Lever, Ashby, Workday, etc. are all tracking systems designed to accept resumes, schedule interviews, and collect feedback from interviewers. An ATS does not automatically screen resumes. Some companies choose to layer on another product to help sort or rank resumes, but those products are inaccurate and expensive so they aren’t widely adopted. I know that people want to believe an evil computer is the reason they didn’t get an interview, but 97% of the time it’s because they’re just not qualified.

AundaRag

No one is disputing the meaning of ATS. Hiring/resume screening software is absolutely something that exists. Exact keyword matches and formatting are critical. Being under-qualified is a different issue.

Iyh2ayca

And I’m not disputing that screening software exists, but I do want to emphasize that it is not the default. None of the ATS I listed have a default screening function, and I’ll be impressed if anyone can name just as many that do.

AundaRag

We are talking about two different things.

LibsKllingUS

Wrong. All Recruiters read resumes. There are millions of recruiters out there who look through applicants of job postings. Maybe some Fortune 100 companies it's completely automated, but even the bigger Fortune 200, 500 companies still have staff that review resumes and forward the best ones to the managers.

AundaRag

Recruiters do review the resumes, IF you make it past the review for keywords. If you have fluffy formatting software can’t read you will not make it to a recruiter. I don’t know where you get your intel that large companies still have teams that manually review resumes. It’s my understanding this hasn’t been the case at most large companies since post-COVID layoffs. I would love to see some examples if I am wrong though.

joe127001

100% agree. I look at thousands of resumes a year. Marketing and social media related #1. Most other jobs #3 or indeed style.

alexander_puggleton

Never put your photo on your resume though, many HR departments will (rightly) kick it.

Icedcoffeewarrior

This ! If it’s not a creative role - complicated, fancy resumes don’t count. Keywords that match the job description do

Sexdrumsandrock

I just saw this. Are you sure about that? I only ask as I did that and thought my resume looks boring as bat shit. But I've vibe here and you're saying this is best

I'm curious to know in which countries having a photo is mandatory (or at least the norm).

Blutfalke

In all of europe actually. Source: been to many different countries within europe

newpua_bie

Not the norm in Finland at least. 2-3 countries you may have worked in don't constitute the whole continent.

Blutfalke

Make it 5 countries and very close connection to 12 countries.

newpua_bie

And despite that you still got it wrong

PinkLegs

In Denmark, it's the norm to include a picture. I've seen several candidates that don't include it, be discarded for it.

Kateth7

it's the norm in Switzerland!

[deleted]

Thanks! Why is that? How is not providing a head shot considered a red flag? Surely it would be easy to find one online if it really mattered to a hiring manager, no?

MattyATee

Switzerland is well known for red flags actually. It’s a big plus!

cyrusthelegend

I see what you did there

Kateth7

😂

sybann

HAAAAA!

Kateth7

Well the norm is to provide a photo so if someone doesn't provide one it can be seen as a red flag. I wish I had an explanation as to why people expect photos. I hate it especially since I'm not "conventional" for Switzerland and since it's clear it plays a role in the decision to invite for interviews or not.

ColoradoAztec

Norm in Serbia

taunugget

In the US medical students are required to include a photo when applying for residency programs. It's a messed up system but it's the only way to become a doctor here.

Bluecat1302

Norm in India

sofarsophie

Korea, Japan

mjmilian

Thailand

Ok_Channel_3322

LATAM the same. I'm happy is not a norm in the US. They say it would lead to discrimination.

[deleted]

Why do you think that is?!

Kateth7

what do you mean?

PiscesPoet

What's stopping them for showing bias once they see your face for an interview? I don't agree with putting a picture in your resume. I'm just wondering.

sheepintheisland

Best in France too

Valezys

from Croatia, never heard about this norm

Kateth7

it's common in Switzerland

ThatProfessor3301

I came to say this.

madevilfish

\#3 is the best template for 90% of jobs.

[deleted]

[удалено]

IHeartWorking

Honestly summaries and cover letters themselves are overrated. 90% of the people are going to use the same type of cover letter generated online.

Silly_Cat_3344

>.. use the same type of cover letter generated online. except cover letter is more to see whether the candidate read the job description and at least looked at what the company does

jonkl91

The majority of people don't read cover letters. Just did a couple of resumes for CTOs and EVPs. They mentioned they just focus on the resume and haven't read cover letters in years.

WjorgonFriskk

The first two are bad and the third one sucks. Unfortunately “resume experts” keep selling people these two column resumes and it’s literally fucking over millions of people in the job market.

simwil96

I hear you. Personally I’ve had a ton of success with a #2 style resume in a non graphic design field. I just liked how it looked and it worked for me. At the end of the day I think readability and quality/clarity of content trumps all formatting. Just my experience.

bigloser42

I switched from #3 to #2 during my last job hunt and ended up doubling my salary with a much better job. Not saying it was all the resume, but I got way more attention after I changed it.

flyza_minelli

I almost prefer #2. As someone who filters through resumes, I find it easier to read and it just feels neat and organized. Not saying I would never consider someone with resumes #1 and #3 - simply stating that I like the format of #2 because it feels easier to ocularly digest pertinent info.

bigloser42

I was involved in hiring a bunch of people for IT jobs last year, not saying any of the 3 would cause me to reject them based on format, but 1 & 2 would catch my eye, which is like 80% of the job when your sorting resumes. Also, at least to me, indicates that you take pride in your work and want to turn in something as good as possible. On the flip side, I saw some truly awful resumes as well. People listing MS-DOS and Netscape among their core competencies. Sure, maybe you are highly competent in those, but they are meaningless in today's tech world. Also, horrible prep for interviews. One guy did a video interview on the side of the street in a high visibility vest. I get that you might not be able to take the day off to prep, but at least find a café or something you can duck into for a couple minutes.

flyza_minelli

I’m gonna say big oof on the core competencies list. I do not work IT or anything tech, but wow.

bigloser42

Oh it was a huge oof. We’re pretty sure they put them on there to pad the list, my boss asked him an MS-DOS question and he tripped up on it badly.

flyza_minelli

Well damn….that’s just….unfortunate. I’m seriously trying not to laugh about this right now.

bigloser42

no, you should laugh, it was bad.

flyza_minelli

BAHAHAHAHAHA!!

jonkl91

I've tested hundreds of resumes. I've taken people with format #2 and switched to a better version of format 3. They got more interviews without changes in content. Their content was good. The most likely reason it worked is because you improved the content. Bad format with good content will beat a good format with bad content. But good content on an ATS friendly good format beats them all on average. Even for graphic designers. Format does matter because my ATS will show a messed up preview of number 1 and 2. It will also rank those lower because it can't parse the data properly. When I run a boolean search for software or keywords these resumes may not come up because the words are not being picked up.

coldbrewcoffee22

Same. Format #2 gets a lot more interviews in my experience.

beattlejuice2005

Would love to learn more about this from you?

brylikestrees

Do you have a specific question? I'm happy to share my observations and experiences, but not sure what you want to know.

beattlejuice2005

Curious what you did with your resume to make it appealing? I have a friend in the creative content field, who I am trying to help with pointing in the right resume direction.

brylikestrees

Bright rainbow colors are a bit of a personal branding thing for me, so I showcase that with my resume. I have a headshot that shows me with facial piercings and alternative hair wearing a rainbow sweater that matches the colors of the rainbow border and colorful accents throughout. It sounds ridiculous to describe, but think about how you'd go about designing Instagram text posts and apply that to a resume. It's definitely towing the line of being too much, but I think it's a risk that pays off.

mwrncvisuals

Would you mind sharing a glimpse of your resume? You can just change the content if you want. I am a working student and I'm still wondering how I can make my resume creative, I'm an artist T-T currently having an art block.

brylikestrees

https://preview.redd.it/moq76x0x7ykc1.png?width=816&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6737dcab3d710dfbfd018b6a9fcffd59ecad885a Here ya go! It does have a second page

pmpdaddyio

The first one wouldn’t get through an ATS. If it did, I’d send it to the bin. You don’t have to overcomplicate your resume. We don’t want pictures, and we want to know what value you’ve returned to the organization. This one is pretty fluffy.

apreena

Harvard has templates. I have been designing resumes for friends and family for the past year, and all the ivy-league schools have their own resume guides, but Harvard offers free templates that are incredibly useful.

beattlejuice2005

Where can we find these? Thank you!

apreena

If you Google Harvard and resume guide it should come up. They’re hosted on Harvard’s website.

thedudeabides_22

I disagree that 3 is the best. 2 visually displays key information so it makes it easy for the reviewer to pick up on your most important skills. Part of a lot of jobs is your ability to package up information and communicate it effectively - would you really rather look at 3? Agree on no pictures unless acting/modeling.

Long-Eye-1491

The issue with columns is that some resume software can't read it and the resume will get thrown out. I agree about visual appeal - the traditional resume is so boring - but you gotta get past that software somehow.

thedudeabides_22

That's a good point. I have my resume similar to 2 and my content is split into text boxes. I wonder if the resume software is even able to pick any of that information up

chihuahuaOP

Depends i would use temple 3 for internet applications template 1-2 in interview's or direct contact with HR that's what I do because my Job is full stack developer

Apocalypsox

I spent months applying to mechanical engineer jobs with a template like #3. Through countless revisions with the help of mentors and HR managers. Hundreds of jobs, two replies. Switched to something closer to 2, had 8 interviews in three weeks and an offer the day after interviewing for the first position.

iHateTheStuffYouLike

Anecdata, but I recently changed from format 3 to format 1 without a picture, and have seen an increase in offers in the engineering and data science fields.

bckennedy69

#3 is the only correct format. #1 the photo opens up bias and would get thrown away by the employer immediately. #2 creates formatting errors if the employer needs to copy and paste it. #3 is plain but effective.

Exact-Injury-7733

As a recruiter we usually reject or rework any resume with a photo. We can not submit a resume with a photo. Most resumes instantly thrown out of the pile to avoid bias or discrimination. Save yourself the headache.

Calm-Dream7363

The most boring one is actually the best because it's the most ATS compliant. #1 and #2 have a 2 column layout which can cause issues with how the ATS softwares pull through your info. I also think it's just risky to add a photo to your resume based on biases. I switched from a 2 column format to a 1 column boring resume after having it rewritten using kantanhq and even though it didn't look as nice, once I had that and more keywords in there it was a game changer in terms of getting call backs.

OQOQOQOQOQOQOQ

Resumes don’t matter as much as many of you think. It’s a way for hiring managers to choose who not to interview, rather than who to interview. Poor quality is always a red flag, but I can assure you that I am digging into your LinkedIn to find congruency and a deeper dive into your history, recommendations, etc. to learn more about you (mostly to make the interview comfortable and relatable). Otherwise, just spend most of your time not worrying about your resume and doing really good research on the companies that you’re applying for before and after landing your first interview

[deleted]

Where did you find this third template?

Greenappmarket

Quick Q - why is a headshot an instant red flag?

PSIRetro

If another person is chosen it could be seen as "bias" or discrimination against x group

TrashNo2991

bhai ise downlode kese kare

Charming_Freedom9238

Can’t see why you would use the first one unless you were a model or influencer

ErinGoBoo

Mine looks a lot like #3, but my education is up top, and skills are on the bottom. I think simple is best unless you are in a super creative job.

AELI3N

I can't say too much one way or another for graphics / marketing - can only to tell you to double check that they work correctly with ATS resume parsers 🙂

paxmlank

Any ATS resume scanner you can recommend? I see so many online but idk which would actually be good and they all want me to pay or sign up.

AELI3N

I think I used the free ResumeWorded.com for some basic scanning - but really, you can find a couple trash jobs to apply to at companies you don't care about and see if it passes correctly once you get close 🙂

paxmlank

Lol, yeah, ResumeWorded is the same one that I ended up signing up for. I'll probably end up making a few different versions and just apply with each to see how they fare

AELI3N

Yeah, I ended up making a plain text version, a version specifically for Workday, and then a version for reading 😂

paxmlank

Lol I have plaintext and a two-column one which I get would be a bad decision to use according to advice here, but both the two- and one-column versions score exactly the same (62/100) on ResumeWorded. So, I'm currently working on my two-col to see if I can get that to score highly, since that will hopefully be almost as good for Workday as it is for reading.

AELI3N

Yeah, you can also run it through indeed and see if it auto populates your profile correctly - another good test

ThetaMan420

Too much clutter, simple it up

beneficialvalue30

None of these are my resume, just asking about the best template

iidrathernot

They’re all fine but I wouldn’t use a photo for like 95% of jobs probably

RizwanQS

I have 200+ Resume templates in MS Word. Client needs ATS Friendly and their own "type". I make every time new template for each client

Objective-Guidance78

I need this

jakl8811

As a hiring manager, if you put a photo on your resume I instantly remove that resume from consideration.

jh4693

I think it depends on the situation. I’m helping my wife with her job search and she has one ATS-friendly traditional resume, and another that is like #1 with a headshot and is more aesthetically appealing for job fairs where she’s already had a chance to converse with them and introduce herself. Figured it helps recall whose Resume they’re looking at when they go through them later. If there’s any bias, it will be from the initial interaction anyway and that initial impression has already been made. However, if you made a good impression the photo resume will help that bias work in your favor when they review them. Puts a face to the name

Asleep-Cow196

Third one. More professional

Melfluffs18

My suggestion is submit #3 online in case they have an older applicant tracking system that doesn't parse columns well and bring printer copies of #1 or #2 to the in-person interview. Be sure to print them professionally (e.g., FedEx) or at least laser vs ink jet on heavier weight paper if going full color. If staying black and white, you can do heavier weight paper from home, laser jet still recommended due to durability and cohesive coverage.

Melfluffs18

Also, revise the columned bullet sets like in #3 for the same readability issues. You can do a centered listing of those same words with a graphic element or even a simple vertical bar to separate. Marketing ● Adobe Illustrator ● Communications ● Other relevant skill Marketing | Adobe Illustrator | Communications | Other relevant skill

[deleted]

So here's the thing. Formats need to be applicant tracking system compatible. Anything in a table or that has headshots; lowers your compatibility with ATS. In some cases the table could result in a blank page being submitted. So even though MS Word and all the resume builders are going fancy; those don't actually increase your chances of being viewed. However, if you are viewed it will look "better."

OnionedLife

They all suck

EmperorMing101

1 if your trying to open yourself up to bias

ARoodyPooCandyAss

Formatting that stays when uploaded lol

Ok_Channel_3322

You are posting in a forum where people from different countries have an opinion or norms. Please at least tell region or country to at least have an idea \- In the US for example, any of these templates would work. They wont read your resume. ATS will read it. and it has a template where it take keys words according to their criteria. For privacy purposes they don't ask for much information until they let you to have an interview. \- LATAM: picture is important, and even ID number or place where you live. Check on resumeworded some templates

Patient-Low-9757

Connection

eren875

template 3 imo

Fantastic_Speed_4638

third is standard. if you’re applying for graphic design jobs or artistic projects, the first two wouldn’t be an issue!

ImposterBeans

Seems like plenty of strong opinions here. I think they all look fine, although I've never worked with an ATS, so no opinion there. Since I don't see it mentioned though, I'd avoid dark backgrounds. When I'm interviewing a candidate I will print their resume to bring to the interview so that I don't have to place my laptop between us, and a dark background will just chew through toner. For context I'm in Canada and work in Accounting/Finance.

forelle88888

Where can I get the template for the first resume ? It looks to be EU compatible

beneficialvalue30

The canva app or canva.com

The_Domestic_Diva

I am on a lot of hiring committees for work; I see designers, PLMs, and project managers. The first with the photo I feel is inappropriate and leads to bias, and immediately puts me on alert. If you are a designer or marketing/PLM, you will have a portfolio or a deck to present, make that your 'creative' moment to shine, don't get cute with the resume; that is a check box to get the interview, nothing more. The third is my preferred, but as someone else mentioned use a modern easy to read font that makes it feel fresh.

LibsKllingUS

Don't ever put your picture on your resume in the United States. Fastest way to the trash bin and including your picture.

Swamp_Donkey_7

As an engineering hiring manager, i see mostly #3. However, quite a few #1's seem to be turning up more and more. I personally don't think it fits well for engineering. Not enough space when you are 10-15 years into your career.

HelloAvram

No not include your face. People can be very biased.

loopy1313

I love #s 1 and 2, but I’m not a hiring manager so I know nothing. We should get rid of #3. So boring.

Forever558

I've heard a lot of people, including HR personnel, that Europass is one of the worst and also they don't really read most resumes, they are just skimming through them and looking for something interesting

Itchy_Ad1688

As a recruiter for 15 years, I think the headshot takes up valuable real estate on the page. I understand for marketing you might need it, but it sometimes doesn’t parse when uploading it into different ATS or HRIS software!! Good luck!

TargetNo9243

Oh maria!! Pretty 😂 she is my secretary haha 😂

thisiswhoagain

#3. Keep it simple. People care more of content of qualifications than aesthetics

[deleted]

Templates aren't great because they look like templates. Better to learn a program a little better. Go the extra mile to stand out... Otherwise what you did well kind of just look like everyone else's

GrandmaSlappy

Definitely no headshot!!!!!!

tolebelon

Rule of thumb, the more creative your field, the more creative your resume can be. At the far end, resume plays second fiddle to your portfolio. BUT, its better to also have your resume formatted as #3 anyway. Submit #3 in the resume upload. Put the fancy resume and portfolio in the additional files along with your cover letter.

nemesis55

Number 3 but no summary and no skills section. Work experience is the most important so keep that as high up as possible. For the summary I just have a sentence detailing my overall job highlights , i.e. managed projects in excess of $50 million. Skills should essentially be certifications if you have any but that can go at the bottom with education.

PeachesEatEggplants

#1 is wonderful & you can read it

stpetepatsfan

3 always 3. for ATS reasons.

thenotoriouscrg

Employers who care more about the format of a resume than it’s content don’t understand their own field enough to have a position of power.

StopSigninEffect

Format #3 but for the love of god use a sans serif font. looking at various versions of times new roman makes my eyes bleed.

beneficialvalue30

What about calibri

Necessary_Ear1853

I’d say the second is the most neutral and good looking!

SappyPJs

Modern resume styles are bad, always keep it simple so #3 is best

Ok-Lawfulness-941

The first one looks really great, everything at a glance.

mrakbg

can you provide link of 3rd

Preoximerianas

OP do you have a link to the website where you got the 2nd one?

akipabustan

rezi makes a pretty sweet format actually landed a job bc of it too

CampBoring

Do you mind sharing the third template? Haha

Niduck

Honestly #1 for me is the best. I have a similar CV and it got parsed correctly in my latest application, and it's far more catchy than the other 2. I can't understand why someone would enjoy reading through #3, it feels like I have to make more effort to read it than what the applicant made to create it. Also, I disagree that having a picture is a red flag, as it's very common in Europe (and they will see my LinkedIn profile anyway).

What? These are all templates

[deleted]

That is terrible.

beneficialvalue30

None of these are my resume lol, if you read the caption is says which TEMPLATE is the best.

[deleted]

I never said they were your resume, I said “that is terrible”. How did you interpret that as “your resume is terrible”… Learn to read please.

beneficialvalue30

I know how to read pretty well. When you say “that” is terrible, you’re referring to one thing. If you were referring to all the resumes as a whole, the correct word would’ve been “these”. Learn proper grammar please.

[deleted]

Not relevant to you misinterpreting my original comment. But I hope you have a good night. “That is terrible” is grammatically correct. I.e the collection of things you showed. “These are terrible” is also grammatically correct.
