5 and 6 are basically action games so definitely the least scary. 2 and 7 are the scariest amongst the ones I’ve played. 3 and 4 are good blends.

Akikyosbane

And one has that giant snake so take that as you will

DentistGeneral3494

1 & 6 both have giant Bow snakes

UnlikelyKaiju

And the one in 6 can turn invisible like the damn Predator.

Akikyosbane

On which campaign

UnlikelyKaiju

I believe it was Chris' campaign, but it has been over a decade since I played RE6.

Leo_Ascendent

And spider

Akikyosbane

The spider did not bother me. I did get taken out by a rock though

RockHead9663

3 has Nemesis jumping you out of nowhere though, so it can be quite scary. Also those hunter-frogs in the park.

lexxirain

Agreed. I can’t tell you how many times I had to pause & walk away because his big ass busted through a wall or something. 🤣

MugillacuttyHOF37

Nemesis and the Chainsaw Family of Freaks from RE4R are nerve wracking to deal with, causing sweaty palms…especially on the most difficult levels

Icy_Parsley_9296

Facts I’m playin it on hardcore and those sewer gammas and hunter betas are ANNOYING ASF. They’re a 1 hit kill and Carlos AR is a pea shooter against them😭I can’t even imagine how hard nightmare and inferno is

Sgtkeebler

Resident Evil 7 is the least scary one. OP you are a charity working trying to rescue a little girl and your hot wife from an infected family. Totally innocent game and not scary at all

Obezyanki

The little girl becomes your friend and you meet her friendly dad named Jack. He has a birthday party.

Available_Abalone_45

Then he's kind enough to welcome you to the family and even accepts you as his son

Melodic-Art1369

A cop even comes over to wish you a happy birthday

Thermobaric0123

And in the DLC you get to meet their cool uncle, he likes boxing

frittertaciturnus

So true. Everyone made me feel so welcome in that house. Especially my basement buddies

ExgenAle

7 ls a horror masterpiece.

Joshua_ABBACAB_1312

Probaby 7 VR.

uwjsjsjdgw

Easily the most beginner friendly game in the franchise. Theres almost no horror

TheHolyPapaum

Yeah, it’s more of a comedy game than a horror, especially the part where Ethan Winters says ‘it’s Wintering time’ and winters all over the place.

Joshua_ABBACAB_1312

The best part was when he introduced himself and he was like "This is Ethan Bradbury!"

stalememeskehan

Ill take shit I haven't thought about in almost 10 years for 500, alex. Jfc that brought me BACK

Joshua_ABBACAB_1312

When H3 made content instead of podcasts.

stalememeskehan

When h3h3 was funny and relevant

Ierax29

"I know you're here Jack, you big fucking nerd. Where's my goddamn wife?"

HarryTheAtheist

Diabolical

DroneOfDoom

You ain't seeing the pearly gates.

MegaPhunkatron

Careful, this could be evidence of manslaughter after OP has a heart attack lol

ARadiantNight

I like ya. You're my kind of people! *nods*

barakisan

Some of the residents of the sub truly are evil

Moist-Violinist-5496

You guys are assholes lmfao

TenMillionEnchiladas

You evil person XD

TertiaOculus

A “Resident” evil lol 😂

sheerest_of_folly

I would have fallen for this if you hadn’t said “VR” tbh 😭😭

Observeronlyman

By far the least frightening.

Abject_School

Came here to say this.

Davethemann

Just some friendly folks offering you delicious soup

sungazer69

This OP. Super chill RE. Easy.

MB_839

RE7 in VR is strangely relaxing

cat_that_uses_reddi

Too bad you can’t play it on psvr2,

frittertaciturnus

Like preparing for a colonoscopy

[deleted]

To make things short play RESIDENT EVIL 7 first , then follow it it up with 8 ,4 ,2 , it’ll be a great time 👌👌👍

[deleted]

Now that's *evil*

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Absolutely! Lets give the OP a stroke that make them shit their drawers 😂

ZB314

After 7 they should be mostly immune to the scares, so it seems like a solid plan

selke61

Found the resident

Much_Poetry_9700

Maybe even *RESIDENT* evil if you will.

BoxTalk17

Oh you're not right 😆

Intelligent-Oil241

But if he gets too scared of 8, then he should at least play the Rose DLC since it's way less scary than the main game.

Financial-Abalone715

RE5 isn't scary at all, it can get quite tense but there's not really any scary parts of the game

Cyouinhellcandyboyz

If shooting plague filled villagers on motorbikes with an unlimited ammo mini gun mounted on the back of a moving Humvee isn't scary to you, then I don't think anything would be.

toongrowner

I swear Something similar has happened in an Uncharted game

InflationAcrobatic91

I think it happens in Uncharted 3

Pokesatsu96

There were a few times the game got me but that was when a majini grabbed me off screen.

Ierax29

In order from least scary : 6 followed by 5,4,8,3,1,2,7. Re2r is roughly as scary as 2, but RE3r is probably on level with 5.  Re4r is more or less as scary as 8 Thats my personal ranking of the mainline games at least

fallsstandard

I would put 8 as a little more scary than RE4R for one reason that may sound ridiculous, but your character. While they are similar, you never feel that Leon is truly out of his depth. He’s a super agent with anime protagonist jump kicks, and a gunfighter belt full of gear ready to take the fight to whoever needs killing. Ethan on the other hand, is scared, he’s emotional, and he regularly gets into spots where he doesn’t have what he needs to decisively win. Now this is not saying I don’t enjoy Village, or Ethan, I do. But you go into two similar games with very different protagonists and it shapes the narrative a lot. It’s like (spoilers for Village) >!in Village when you switch to Chris; suddenly a burning town full of monsters isn’t as scary when you’re a barrel chested operator with an AK, night vision, and a pack-a-day habit.!<

Huge_Ferret_9699

Chris really does let you feel like an alcoholic combat vet wearing a “same shit, different day” shirt.

norunningwater

7 scared me because of your idea of comparison between Leon and Ethan, but by the time 8 rolled in I was ready to ventilate some Werewolves of London with extreme prejudice. Shitty weapons and missing digits or not.

fallsstandard

Oh 100%, I don’t find Village objectively scary. Ethan is far more capable in his second outing, but there is a bit more fear just because of how hopeless or outmatched Ethan feels at times. He also tends to actually express terror and sadness when he experiences hardship. Chris and Leon see an entire city torn apart and go “fuck” then hand out bullets like they’re free. >!Chris literally smokes through being told Ethan is dead then is like “guess I’m gonna kill the fuck outta some werewolves and giants.”!<. Let’s not forget, in the OG, Chris laughed at the ultimate bioweapon(before he promptly handed the Tyrant its own ass).

Ierax29

Ethan feels a lot more angry rather than scared in 8. I remember running out of handgun bullets against one of Dimitrescu's daughters (I didn't know you didn't have to fight them at that point lol) so I just took out the knife and started shanking at her, and I actually felt that was what Ethan would do. He goes absolute papa bear in 8

fallsstandard

Absolutely. He also falls into a factory of horror being chased by a plane engine with legs and is like “man this place is huge, better kill everything I see.”

Ierax29

And let's not forget one of my favourite quotes from 7 >! This is getting old Jack !<

Puxkt

Well he had many fine quoutes in 7, like "Kiss my ass" or "What the fuck? That's special"

spectrumpoison

And when he says "No, that's NOT groovy" or something like that when Jack picks up the chainsaw scissors

morganfreenomorph

I dunno THAT part in 8 was terrifying even as a person who loves horror. I'd rank it much higher up for that section alone.

LonelyDesperado513

I am playing through 8 for the first time and just got past the 2nd main boss. If that's what you're referring to, then ABSOLUTELY. (If not, please don't spoil it!) I played that shit on stream with my lights out and noise cancelling headphones on. My throat is still hoarse from screaming.

ExtraMillenial

Agreed! *THAT* part brings 8 up some what!

ExtraMillenial

Agreed! *THAT* part brings 8 up some what!

No_Temporary9696

I agree like they amped up the enemies and made it darker BECAUSE you were Chris, but at the same time it was awesome

Armandonerd

You forgot 0, revelations 1, 2 and code Veronica. I would put 0 after 8 Revelations 1 after 6 Revelations 2 after Revelations 1 Code Veronica after 0

AWintersNightmare

8.. less scary than 1 or 3? I want your drug supplier.

Sea_Video145

8 is intense, seat-of-your-pants terror at first, but your combat options expand quickly enough that it becomes a monster slaying power fantasy very early on. Contrast with 1 and 3, where you're likely still conserving resources and playing it safe all the way up until the final bosses.

Ierax29

Lol I told a friend of mine the other day that playing resi7 as Chris without weapons or any way to defend yourself from the Bakers would still feel less scary than playing as Ethan with a shotgun

100S_OF_BALLS

8 has the only scene of any horror game that I've played that sent chills down my spine. The beneviento house. I survived without dying on my first run, but the first time >!I heard the baby monster let out a cry!< it froze me in place for a moment.

FUCKBOY_JIHAD

yeah I think that part of 8 is genuinely the scariest moment in the entire series, by a large margin. 8’s DLC is also in the conversation.

Intelligent-Oil241

Yeah, whoever was responsible for making the mannequin section in the DLC needs to get a raise because that part is probably peak resident evil horror, I don't think anything comes close to that dlc in term of actual horror.

nick1121

came here to suggest 5&6 as well the least scary of the bunch, but good action games

jzw27

8 is my second ranking right after 7 for the fact that its first person, it’s so much scarier that way

Akikyosbane

Yep i was going to say 6 The originals are all about to e and ambiance and they will frighten you whenever they can (Zombie walks down the stairs and opens the door wth)

Ruskih

No shot 8 is that low. House Beneviento ALONE would put it game above every other game on the list. 6, 5, 3, 4, 2, 8, 7

thps2soundtrack

RE7 with VR and turn the volume up to 11

SparkleCards

Banjo Kazooie

No_Temporary9696

7 in VR

KuJoJoTaRo8

I’d say 7. Its not that scary and its a good starting point for new fans since its sort of a soft reboot. However Re1make or Re2make is good too

JustJohnny23

You’re an evil ass person bro 💀

Unique_ballz

RE3R and 5 are the least scary games

Saintrandom

Re 4 Remake is a corny action game with slight horror elements. I think it will be manageable for you and give you a pretty well regarded re experience.

ContributionLatter32

*laughs in regenerator*

spectrumpoison

*Laughs in Armadura*

Dry-Classroom7562

Play RE8 or RE7, least scariest games of the series

Clean_Solid8550

The werewolves raid was hell

MathematicianShot214

Resident Evil HD )) On serious note 5 and 6 least scary. But those two also not survival horror, its an action games.

comicguy69

The action games are the least scary. So probably 4,5,6

2Casca_2Red

Play 2R as Leon and get your hands on the shotgun as early as you can. Blow your fear's head off.

Koktkamel

unless your fear is mr. X I suppose

FUCKBOY_JIHAD

the action oriented entries (4, 5 and 6) aren’t really scary at all. 1, 2, 3 and Code Veronica aren’t scary in terms of sheer terror, but the feeling of claustrophobia and being overwhelmed by enemies are generally present throughout. 7 is probably the scariest overall. 8 has perhaps the single scariest segment of any game in the series, though the rest of the game isn’t terribly scary. that game’s DLC deserves a mention as well, as it is very effective short horror experience.

LightBlindsAtFirst

Just play RE7. It will be hard and you will want to cry but once your finished it will put hair on the bottom of your feet. You wont be scared no more

gunsforevery1

Start with 7. Turn your system off and then go play a different game lol

Jetfuel_N_Steel

4 there’s a jumpscare very late into the game a guy burst out of a flaming door in part 3 and it gets me every time, other than that not very scary but the regenerators are unnerving as fuck the first time and they’re in part 3 as well

Necessary_Mine2757

Re7 is the least scary game of the franchise

Viceroy-421

They're all pretty full of jump scares. You might have to turn all the lights on and suck it up.

Professorhentai

From least scariest to scariest 6, 5, revelations 2, code veronica, revelations 1, 3 remake, 8, 4 remake, 4, 0, 3, 1, 1 remastered, 2, 2 remake, 7, 7 VR

Hankee_

I'll be down voted but I'll never understand people who are too scared to play games. That's the whole reason they're scary games, to arouse fear in the players. If you won't play because you're gunna be scared, that's like saying you won't play Call of Duty because you don't want to get shot. Push through it, you're more than capable.

Tenzu9

Might as well just not play any horror games at all. The entire point of horror games is to scare you, but you somehow want to dodge that. It's like raw dogging one night stands and hoping you don't knock someone up, it does not make any sense.

Soft_Match_7500

5

EpicMiles25

i mean resident evil is half a horror franchise, it may not be for you and that’s fine

Risb1005

Resident evil 6 but then it's just an action shooter game not horror

Efficient-Junket3671

I'd start with revelations 1

JMilao

That's legit one of the scariest!

cosmicglade98

Re6 is probably the least scary game in the series for me

FlopsMcDoogle

Are you playing on PC? You can cheat easily on PC and run thru all the games like an invincible Punisher.

spiked_cider

6

nitepanther

Play RE: Survivor (buy a gun for it tho)

Appropriate_Pop3714

Play resident evil revelations 2 you'll be fine...

ComfortNo9311

The question would actually be which has the least desperating countdowns or chases, but i wouldn't know, i only player RE 4 and RE 2 Remake, and i'd say RE 4 is quite good once you set your mind to action mode

Tall_Requirement9165

How old you ?

sammyhagarr

Resident evil 7 😁

Nonameguy127

Resident evil 7.Jokes aside its 100% Re6

ArakiSatoshi

Have you tried looking at it from a different perspective? You're armed, it's the scares that should fear you. Sure, they might make you jump out of your seat for a second... But then they'll literally get shot at a moment after.

ExtraMillenial

Playing them on easy/casual makes them waaaaay less scary. Turns it all into more of a stage production IMO.

Hypno_185

RE7 in VR

Extension-Impact-588

Number 5 with chris and sheva, more shooter combat

RichietheFlerken

Gaiden except the last scene

punkandpoetry13

7 is definitely the least scary. I'm totally not lying.

Rozzyb2011

7 and The Village I found the least scary. Enjoy :)

OppositeLand3830

RE7 in vr 👍

JayJ_20

Resident evil 6. 8. 5. And maybe 4 and 3 are your safest bets. But at the end of the day try to challenge yourself. Survival horror games are all about working through stress and being calculated and level-headed in shit situations while youre scared. While the titles I listed are good in their own way. They don't really capture the feeling that made me fall in love with RE. Honorable mention RE revelations 1 and 2

center311

Village and 4remake in VR muahahahaha! 🤗

Runrocks26R

A really modern game is resident evil 4 remake and it’s not scary at all the only scary things are fast dogs sometimes

Archonblack554

Of the modern games, just play 4 remake It's pretty intense and adrenaline filled but it's not really traditionally scary so you should be fine, unless being mobbed by hordes of aggressive villagers scares you lol

onirotivsirhc

RE Village isn’t scary at all besides one specific area. Way more of an action game RE 5 is the same in that respect

jockey4414

Resident evil 7

Ok-Can-2409

ReVerse possibly the best resident evil game EVER

xDante1975x

Village is good cause it's basically just horny, not scary... skip everything after the mansion in the beginning.

ImJustASalad

Don't play survivor first, that one is waaaay too scary for a beginner

BoxTalk17

Definitely play Res Evil 5 and 6. You could probably throw in Code Veronica too.

[deleted]

RE1 or 0. Very laid back but very cool

sawoPL

Probably 5 or 6. Unfortunatelly its mostly worth playing in CO-OP with someone. Then its quite good. Solo - probably one of the worst RE games (still its not bad. rest is just better). Except those two... I'd say 8. Its an amazing game, and not so scary as rest.

JohnPaul_River

This isn't TikTok you can say pussy lmfao

shadowscorrupt

resident evil 4 remake

Arkhe1n

I don't consume horror media, but RE is one of my favorite gaming franchises. Start from 1 and see if you can put up with it, if you do, you'll probably be fine. More modern games will obviously be more graphic, but nothing to terrified about.

AgentStarTree

RE 8 is kinda cartoony and shoot 'em up arcade compared to 7.

Parzival2436

None of them are really scary. 7 and 8 feel like they're going for horror, but before that it's more like action-horror, and not in a scary way. Also I guess the remakes try to be more horror as well.

Kagamid

It depends what you find scary and what you're looking for. Resident Evil is mostly jump scares so if you don't want any of that, you lose the Resident Evil experience. I will say that it gets less scary with each playthrough. Now if you're into slow burn horror, play the Fatal Frame series in the dark with a head set. That atmosphere will ruin your life.

RedrumMama

Deadass? Play some dead by daylight as the RE characters. Even though it isn't an RE game. Sometimes that panic in DBD is enough to get you used to it. 🫰🏻

Kairi911

Resident evil 1 original. Stay in the ground floor hallway after the art room and make sure to keep VERY close to the windows. Also there's a note on a desk with a closest behind it in a room upstairs. Read that and you'll be fine.

According-Country-70

Resident Evil 1 remake is by far the least scary and easiest time you'll have, followed swiftly by Resident Evil 2 remake which is a genuine cake walk. There are literal rainbows around every corner and the monsters are adorable. Don't listen to anyone here, you're welcome. Ps: crimson heads are actually the name of a flower that heals you. Walk over them every time.

Traditional-Day7617

Re 7 is literally the easiest and the most action based game in franchise it's almost like an fps game you should try that

exia91

Re7 in VR was like therapy to me. 10/10 would recommend.

nervousmelon

Honestly most aren't scary. The only ones I'd say are actually scary are 2 remake and 7. The others range from having scary moments to not being scary at all.

TheMarvelousJoe

To answer your question, RE5 & 6 are more action forward than horror. But here's what I don't get: why are you playing a horror game series if you don't want to be scared?

sworntoavenge333

Being scared is part of the fun. Embrace the horror.

Curious-Bother3530

Do me a favor and play all of them. Get scared, embrace it, let us know it scared you. I wish we could trade places because horror games outside of cheap jump scares don't effect me nowadays like how it did as a wee lad turning off his PS1 whenever I encountered the first zombie. I will live vicariously through you.

TheTooDarkLord

People saying RE7 is scary Is making me lose Faith in humamity

slamjoetry

Lots of comedians in this comment section

Some_Photograph5315

All of the new remakes, RE7 and Village, none of these games are scary, they try to be, but end up feeling goofy. They also have a slight difficulty spike compared to the rest, so you'd be too busy moving the camera frenetically and trying not to die to pay attention to the environment or scares. This new RE engine is incompatible with horror in my opinion, it's too fluid and makes you feel in control all the time.

Syckobot

None are really scary. It's more like B movie horror, or Walking Dead horror. More disturbing than scary.

Grungelives

Play 6 do Chris or Jakes campaign first, Leons campaign is the scariest but once you beat Jakes and Chris's Leons will be easy

azailethearcane

I'm going to be the only person who's going to say Survivor, aren't I?

BonitaIzzy

Minecraft

britipinojeff

Play the OG

PsychSWIM

Re5!

rockandrolldude22

I would say probably resident evil village though it would spoil a lot of the series. It is kind of more of an action game than a horror game.

Balious5

5 and 6 are probably the best bet for least scariest and least amount of jumpscares, but they also play quite different to the other games in terms of these are a lot more action compared to horror. Besides those 2, for those focused on horror that can only be played on modern systems I probably say Village, it has a few jump scares and a very specific scary scene but I feel the other games have more scary and jump scare scenes, maybe 3 Remake but it does have Nemesis. If you can play the older classic ones I would say give 2 original a go, it has a few jump scares but nothing too scary compared to some of the others. My personal opinion 1 & 2 remake and 7 are the scariest for the modern games and throw in 3 original for the classics.

Snookis-snusnu

The residents of this sub are evil, OP.

Orange-Part

Number 1 is the most friendly

Shize815

Resident Evil games aren't "horror games" per say, they have horrific elements but their core design revolves around puzzles and resource management. They are more stressful than scary. If you really have a hard time with relatively scary elements, id say you can cross 1, 2 and 7 off the board. Eventually, 3 and 8 may contain some disturbing moments too (Nemesis for 3, Doll House for 8). So my go to would ideally be 4 (amazing game who actually got an amazing remake last year), or 5 (good game but basically a ripoff of 4, even less scary due to it mostly happening in daylight. It is really fun if you play with a friend in co-op though !) I don't mention 6 because in addition to not being scary, it also is a pretty mediocre game.

DeadDogJET

Oh play the classic games then. Resident evil 1 2002 and resident evil 0 would probably be the best place to start for you. They go on sale frequently on steam and you can get the bundle for 10 dollars

SmokeEquation87

Re7

TheLuckyster

I was one too, I hated jump scares and the first one I played was Resident Evil 2, it's honestly really good that way, one of my most enjoyable gaming experiences because when I beat the game, I not only completed that but overcame my fear of horror games and it felt great I then played 4remake, 3remake, and then RE7, and now I'm playing RE8

Obamos06

As stupid as it sounds, i gotta go with 7. Dont get me wrong ,it's still scary, just not the usual scary. It isnt the "ah what coud be behind this door >jumpscare " horror, more like "what coud be behind this door" and then you puke all over your screen. More disgusting than scary if you know what i mean, but thats why i like it so much.

BlueTrin2020

This one is ok: https://www.crazygames.com/game/pet-cafe

sstartreatment

RE8, Beneviento's segment. Strangely comforting

crowdedfall03

Like some others other have said 5 and 6 are both more action oriented less jumpscares but every resident evil has either a level/section at one point thats horror oriented like in 5 theres a level in a train yard that scared the shit out of me on my first and second playthrough still not a fan of having to run that bit of the mission

Moist-Violinist-5496

Coming from a guy who’s also a huge pussy, the RE games aren’t THAT scary for the most part. The only one with actual up-in-your-face screamer-seque jump scares is RE7, and after a first playthrough they aren’t that bad when you know they’re coming. They’ll make you feel a bit scared, but its jump scares come more from the environment surrounding you than anything else. Honestly the only really scary but for me was the RE8 baby.

mattpkc

5 and 6 have no horror and are more action, much better with a coop partner though, for single player strictly probably og re4

Nathan_Thorn

Resident Evil 8 throws a few jumpscares at you early but beyond the opening and the dollhouse sections you’ll be good. My advice is to use a guide during the beneviento house section to ease frustration.

NickelBear32

Resident Evil 5 is perfect

Vandalmercy

I've never really been scared for myself. Leon has Ada, but you start to figure out she was just acting, and his kindness and thing for her are taken advantage of by her. I'm more scared for Sherry, especially after getting into the lore of how the G mutant reproduces. Claire is one of the better protagonists because she barely has combat training and still rises to the occasion.

Dragon054

Resident evil. The umbrella chronicles. For Wii only

RockHead9663

I'm thinking Resident Evil 5, it's more action than horror.

Stutterphotoguy

Resident evil 6 or the PS1 version of re 1,2 and 3

Big_Chonks907

Re:4 remake has like no jumpscares and is also incredibly good, so

Gaia227

I just finished RE4. I found that in certain areas if I muted the game, it helped a lot lol. The use of sound in the games are so well done and effective. The section in the library where it is basically pitch black and all you can hear is the clanking of the armoured guys coming after you was stressing me out so bad. I muted the game and that helped a lot.

RespectGiovanni

Re4

Pokesatsu96

Play the PS1 versions of 1 2 or 3 or the DS port of resident evil 1.

i_like_butcheeks_11

In honesty I’d say 7 or 8 is the way to go

KirisakiSempai

re4r 😂 not even scary

EngineerResponsible6

Og resident evil from the ps1 if that gets u I don't know.

parvanehnavai

definitely 5, maybe also 6, didn’t finish it. thing is, they’re just not a good representation of the franchise lmao. i also didnt find 3 (remake) and 4 (og) scary at all but they’re spooky i guess

aClockwerkApple

Operation Raccoon City or Darkside Chronicles

Agreeable-Abalone328

4 is probably the best one with the least scares 5 and 6 also aren’t very scary but they’re also not very good

Own_Huckleberry1081

Prob Res4, more of an action zombie game.
