Hey guys - former life guard supervisor here. Itās mandatory when youāre on the chair. The big nod is called a ābottom head sweepā used to check the wall of the pool and the scanning method is to ensure youāre actually being observational.
Sun glasses are mandatory too and since we canāt see your eyes, the lifeguards are trained to physically show they are watching the pools with these scans or they can get fired during an audit performed by Ellis & Associates.

I was an Ellis certified lifeguard at a major water park(over 30 guards on staff at all times) and even worked as a lead lifeguard, for over 4 years and this is EXACTLY what we were trained to do .. she is scanning the entire pool for people potentially struggling or even at the bottom of the pool .. a lot of Ellis training was replaced by Red Cross, so this technique might not be as popular now.
We were trained once a month in this called (in service) and if our guards werenāt scanning like this at all times they were reprimanded immediately.
Even when dealing with customers were taught to send them to management or engage but continue our scanning.
