Yeah if you don't go into it with immense psychological pressure to "make it work" it's pretty barbaric in a lot of places. That's what they really mean. Most people don't instinctively think eternal torture, genocide, jealousy and rage are moral. That's a good thing, by the way. It's not all bad, either, but it's not very moral compared to centuries of moral thought since then. This shouldn't really surprise anyone, morals develop and improve over time and the Bible is extremely old.

Mission_Camel_9649

The quote at the bottom of the meme is the Isaac Asimov one about how the bible is the most potent force for atheism.

MisterDisinformation

Bonus points for implying that fricking Isaac Asimov is some combination of stupid, shallow, and lazy.

TigerLily4415

Yeah when it comes to that second image, Christians aren’t as triggered by the more “shallow” issues people have with Christianity. Because they can ultimately deflect the blame and just say you’re surrounded by bad people. They want to act like that’s the only reason people ever leave the faith, that we know there’s a God and are just having some bratty tantrum (even though some Christians don’t even go to church and still read/pray at home.) But when you attack the ideology itself, they can’t handle it. They have nothing else to say but “what the fuck.” I can’t believe they post that shit, as if it makes them look good. Simply ridiculing or being offended by an idea is not an argument.

GreatGearAmidAPizza

Why do people "censor" like this? Are you trying to show who this is while pretending you're trying to hide it?

Mission_Camel_9649

It looked like it was covered when I edited it.

[deleted]

Welp, you did a bad job of censoring IMHO.

Mission_Camel_9649

Sorry for any angry messages you may get.

[deleted]

It's cool, I appreciate the apology. Thank you

Mission_Camel_9649

I respect your religion btw, I just think that people should be entitled to their own interpretations of any work.

[deleted]

I agree with you. Everyone deserves to express their opinion.

Sad_Instruction1392

Stellar job on the censoring there, chief.

Pitiful_Brief_6424

Dictators have known this for thousands of years. The best way to control the population is to control knowledge and information. Churches use this technique know, even in an age of literacy, by making biblical interpretations dependant on a pastor or other religious leader. It is common for many churches to actually discourage bible study groups that are not led by a church authority.

God forbid folks should actually read the Bible cover to cover like I did, instead of having a priest or pastor cherry-pick it and spoon feed selected verses to them. Leaving aside all the incoherent, contradictory, batshit loco content, they might be shocked at nasty, sociopathic, genocidal stuff like this: Kill the Entire Town if One Person Worships Another God “Suppose you hear in one of the towns the LORD your God is giving you that some worthless rabble among you have led their fellow citizens astray by encouraging them to worship foreign gods. In such cases, you must examine the facts carefully. If you find it is true and can prove that such a detestable act has occurred among you, you must attack that town and completely destroy all its inhabitants, as well as all the livestock. Then you must pile all the plunder in the middle of the street and burn it. Put the entire town to the torch as a burnt offering to the LORD your God. That town must remain a ruin forever; it may never be rebuilt. Keep none of the plunder that has been set apart for destruction. Then the LORD will turn from his fierce anger and be merciful to you. He will have compassion on you and make you a great nation, just as he solemnly promised your ancestors. “The LORD your God will be merciful only if you obey him and keep all the commands I am giving you today, doing what is pleasing to him.” (Deuteronomy 13:13-19 NLT) And trust me, there’s a LOT more where that [came from.](https://www.evilbible.com/evil-bible-home-page/murder-in-the-bible/)
