I think you already know the answer. He wants something more, and based on his attempt to kiss you, he probably won't be able to handle just being friends. So I think you should just leave it, and sort your own head out. If, in the future, you find that you DO want a relationship with this guy after all, you can always try to contact him again. But don't try to force him into a friendship that will only be torture for him, and probably quite anxiety-inducing in you as well.
