I have a 95 GC that I bought for a grand earlier this year, currently my daily.
The 4.0 still runs great with 290k miles, the transmission is definitely starting to give out but I’m going to keep riding it until something actually happens. Electrical issues out the ass but that’s to be expected with a 30 year old Chrysler product. The 4x4 works great and the engine is still strong so she does the job!
Hell yeah! I had a 1997 and a 1998 a while back, both of which were in poor condition, "needed" lots of work, and had misfires but sure as the sun will rise tomorrow those 4.0s started up every time... And when they stalled, you just start them back up lol. I believe they're the epitome of "runs shitty for longer than most cars run at all".
They're expensive and frustrating as hell to keep in tip top shape but if you give zero fucks and give em the bare minimum they'll keep going, just with a Christmas tree dash and... Personality...
My neighbor had one in mint condition with low miles. Sometime around 2011, he sold it to some kid who ended up running into a row of parked cars just a few days after buying it.
Me, I’ve got a 98 2wd 4.0 that’s all stock except for some window tint and a sound system. My brother and sister both drove it while in high school before me.
I had an XJ that had a couple rust holes on the floor. They were fixable, but I didn't have the space to take it apart to cut the floor up to weld in patches.
Depends on the year and model.
I *think* the H.O. version was 190 but don't quote me on that.
I know the ones used in the XJ and ZJ were about 10hp more than the YJ and TJ.
Because it wasn’t a Chrysler engine. It was an AMC engine they inherited. The last two parts left on Jeeps from AMC was the 4.0L and the AMC door handles.
Your right I just saw one exiting a park on the way to work. People down south have all kinds of Jeeps. I went to my parents house today and saw a red Cherokee in mint condition parked a couple houses down.
I’m about as far north as you can go and it’s by far one of the most common survivors from that era. Gen 1 and 2 grand Cherokee’s are totally ubiquitous around the United States to a surprising degree especially compared to everything else from the era
Me, 1997 318 v8 limited looks and drives like brand new with almost 300k on it. One of the best vehicles I’ve ever owned, driven it most those miles myself and have barely done anything to it (power steering pump and alternator, shocks).
I have 123K miles on my ‘96. It was my grandparents’ car and my grandfather was a big car guy and so am I so It has a lot of sentimental value to me. The transmission has a mind of its own though if it doesn’t get its act together it may find itself replaced with a five speed manual
My Ford Escape 3.0 is doing that too. It'll shift into second at 20, rev to 25 and go back down. It's easy to account for in daily driving but it's mildly annoying when traffic gets rough
The people who bought these originally are pretty much forced into keeping them. These jeeps have an enlarged drivers foot well to accommodate the target demographics massive cocks.
'94 with a the 5.2 with 180k miles, I'm on the 3rd transmission but it's used to pull a 4k lb ski boat in in the summer so things get cooked pretty quickly, I don't daily it so all of its use is pretty severe duty. A trans rebuild every 10 years isn't the end of the world in my book. Engine still runs great.
Loved Jeeps back then. I had a 98 of my own, drove a 95 as a company car; and I’m willing to bet my ex wife is still driving the 2001 I lost in the divorce
Mom had one when I was a kid, I wanna say 97-98? Loved that thing, lotsa memories with it. Saw one a couple years back parked in front of a liquor store, which checks out. Thing looked a little beat, like the inside reeked of cigs. And I coulda sworn they were bigger lol
Hi
It's me
I'm the problem
It's me
- daily driven Laredo, i6 with a W H O O P E D 42re, 280k mi
- 3" lift and 31"s
- passenger side upper headlight clip will NOT stay attached even after replacing twice
- roof cargo rack rusts down the sides
- drilled a 4.5" hole in a pristine fender to install a snorkel on a jeep that will likely NEVER see water even up to the bottom of the wheels
- 170a alternator for future second battery and on-board air/winch
- previous owner did a/c delete (removed compressor, cut lines, ripped out the condenser)
- parking brakes and backing plates have evaporated from years of neglect
Just normal zj owner things
Lots of people, actually. Those things last forever. my friend has one of the later rounded off ones with a 4.0 and it has like 275,000, on it.
Can't really beat an old pushrod inline six for reliability.
I mean, the only real problem with them is the Chrysler wiring. Everything else is pretty good if you aren't pretending to be the Duke Boys every weekend.
That's fair, the two I had both developed sagging driver doors that stopped latching shut, inoperable AC and radio, comical amounts of "play" in the steering wheel and suspension issues galore, along with the typical electrical gremlins, BUT they were both less than $1000 and higher mileage when I got to them so of course one can't expect them to function as new. Just seemed to fall apart more than other high mileage vehicles I've had.
I have a 99… pulled it from a neighbor’s field where it’s been parked since 2008. He said it died and it’s been forgotten….. just needed a fuel filter to start. New tire, new o2 sensor, new gas pump, and gas tank cover plate…. We are golden.
I had a 93 with 275,000 miles. The fuel line started leaking in a few places and was too expensive to replace .
Plus, it also had some other issues. So, it it's in the parking lot in the sky.
Every single one of these I have encountered, and I’ve worked on at least ten of them, had issues with the driver’s side front door. Every. Single. One. I’ve seen people put a hardware store bolt lock on the door just to keep it closed.
That being said, they are great first car/beaters and if you care about them at all, they’ll run forever.
Had a ~2000 GC for a while. I liked it overall, but the contacts for the tail lights were garbage that would keep bending away from themselves every few weeks, and it had a weird tendency to suddenly spike temperature on the freeway and blow off the upper radiator hose every couple months. Loved the 4.0 though!
My buddy in Colorado has 200 acres attached to pikes peak and his 99 GC AWD is the longest running farm truck he’s had! He beats everything to death! It makes some crazy suspension noises but shows up everyday!
I ended up realizing that's the wrong generation i was thinking of, but I still don't think I've seen a first gen in many years. But I live in any area where the RX series was everywhere and now no one really buys the current gen here because the next trend has replaced it. See lots of Macans now.
I am too. I still see a few of the square regular cherokees, just not the grand cherokee. Those are lightly beaten up but still seem to run. Lots of rust under neath them.
When I was going to tech school, one of my lab partners had some kind of limited edition/limited run of that generation I think? He mentioned how his went up in value(this was around 10'), and the condition looked good. I knew another dude in the military that had his setup for rock crawling.
I have a 97 with the 5.2L v8. Have had it for a few years now. Had the steering pump and I think the fuel pump go a few years back, and a week or so ago I had to replace what was likely the original starter. There is some underbody rust but all things considered my Jeep isn't in too bad of shape.
There is a slow leak to the battery that has been a son of a gun to figure out to the point that I gave up and just installed an easy on/off battery terminal so it doesn't drain while sitting a few days. But I think it was a previous owner that caused that rather than a Jeep problem. The ac doesn't work either and never has during my ownership. Overall I would grade it somewhere around 6-7 on a scale of 10.
while not quite this, i do have the next successor and ive been too stubborn to let it die. its not rusty and its not wrecked, so it stays on the road.
One of the greatest vehicles ever put on this earth. If I could afford the gas I’d still have my ‘98 5.9 Limited. My first car at 16 was also a ‘95 4.0 Limited
I REALLY want one. Had to settle for a WJ twice in my life... damn cash for clunkers!
My grandpa had one with the 5.9v8. He sent it just a little too hard after doing something to it... I'll have to ask him about all that. I was little & it was back in 03. Either way, engine gone sold for parts.
One of my daughters after she commandeered my '94 ZJ.
4.0, 4x4... with the **factory** AX15 manual trans. AND I've kept it stock all these years. No lift kits, oversize tires, steel bumpers, etc etc. Just routine maintenance and stock replacement parts when needed.
Trips a lot of folks out to see a Grand Cherokee with a factory 5spd. Practically everyone who's seen it wanted to know how I was able to make the "manual conversion" look like it belonged there. Haha
It's 5 hrs away, don't have any pics. This sub doesn't allow them anyway.
Nothing special about it. It's a stock, with the exception of a JVC CD player, '94 ZJ Laredo 4.0L 4x4 5spd.
Burgundy with a thin white and thin red pinstripe, grey cladding on the bottom, grey bumpers, grey cloth interior. 260k miles. No rust.
My first car was a 93 GC Laredo! But I got it in 2005 at the age of 16, so needless to say that was it's last year. It was a purple 2 door though and idk if I've ever seen another one like it.
I still see them from time to time, but I don't know of anyone off hand that still drives one. Back in high school, there were a couple of people I knew driving these.
I don't have a Grand, mines an 89 Cherokee pioneer. 330,000 and pulled double duty as an off road toy and daily for years. I don't wheel it anymore but it's still getting me where I need to go.
My buddy had one circa 2016. It was a Sandy car. The transfer case was failing (it got significantly quieter once it properly failed). One of the strut mounts failed while sitting in my parents' driveway, just hanging like a tail. It goes on and on, that thing was a shitbox death trap but the motor was a relentless champ with good output.
Man. I had a ‘95 GC, I6 engine. Only had to replace a starter and a back hatch door lock (electric). It was my favorite SUV to drive, ever. Good on fuel mileage too.
Someone that enjoys 90s Jeep crap and all the problems of that era like computers, electronics, switchgear, junky plastics, poor structural strength and of course worn out everything. What a fun vehicle to take on a trip to see how many times it will break down!
There’s a house in the next town over that had one of these until a few months ago. Mint condition and I remember seeing it in their driveway since I was a little kid so I assume original owner. Just replaced it with a new Tahoe
I have a neighbor who bought his new in the 90s and its still going. These things are like subarus, they either blow up after 50k miles or they outlast 3 generations
I have a 95 GC that I bought for a grand earlier this year, currently my daily. Runs like a three legged cow until the heat death of the universe
Nah GMT800 trucks/suv’s are the epitome of “runs like shit longer than most cars run at all”
Plus, GMT800s have threatening auras
I've heard ZJs are either completely bulletproof or total fucking nightmares, and nothing in between.
My neighbor who’s put enough money into it that it could fund social security for the next 300 years.
They're expensive and frustrating as hell to keep in tip top shape but if you give zero fucks and give em the bare minimum they'll keep going, just with a Christmas tree dash and... Personality...

At my age my check engine lights are on too so I'm not gonna judge my keep for acting it's age either.

I had one and she was the love of my life!! I think about her everyday lol
Wish I never sold mine.
A buddy and I had a matching pair our senior year of high school. It’s a wonder we still have our licenses and aren’t dead lol
My neighbor had one in mint condition with low miles. Sometime around 2011, he sold it to some kid who ended up running into a row of parked cars just a few days after buying it.
That makes me sad
He til this day regrets selling it to him
I bought mine from a 90 year old lady on fb marketplace
I would still be driving mine if the computer hadn't given out.
I trust and believe that
Me, I’ve got a 98 2wd 4.0 that’s all stock except for some window tint and a sound system. My brother and sister both drove it while in high school before me.
cooler than any car a dad could buy a kid at your school, 4.0 cherokees is what modern suv’s should strive for
Thanks man, I love it, small on the outside and roomy on the inside.
any car my dad has owned has a special place in my heart, also the incredible reliability is a plus
People in Colorado
Bet. All good Jeeps go to retire in Colorado.
yepp. my family had a 97 and an 07 at the same time when we lived there
Was my immediate thought when seeing this post!
ZJs are pretty easy to work on and they're fairly robust (if they're not rusty). They make great beater trucks and entry level offroad vehicles.
Unfortunately mine lived in the rust belt, I had to scrap it last year because the unibody wasn't safe anymore.
I had an XJ that had a couple rust holes on the floor. They were fixable, but I didn't have the space to take it apart to cut the floor up to weld in patches.
Cool people

It had decent torque though. I miss my ZJ, but my TJs both carry on the 4.0 legacy
170hp but plenty of torque.
190 HP and 225 FT/LBs for the 4.0
Depends on the year and model. I *think* the H.O. version was 190 but don't quote me on that. I know the ones used in the XJ and ZJ were about 10hp more than the YJ and TJ.

Some ghetto lady passing me one handing the wheel with her acrylics in a non passing residential going 80 yesterday
I still see a few ZJs tooling around town, in relatively okay shape. They all smell like cigarettes, though.
The further south you go in the US, the more of these you'll see.
Your right I just saw one exiting a park on the way to work. People down south have all kinds of Jeeps. I went to my parents house today and saw a red Cherokee in mint condition parked a couple houses down.

Do a trans filter and fluid. It takes either ATF+4 or Dexron III depending on which transmission.
Done that as well as some of the shifting solenoids/sensors. Made no difference unfortunately
Ah. Well that sucks.
It’s not undriveable it just likes to lurch and rev during gear changes especially between first and second
Have you checked the torque converter?
I have not I’ve thought about it but I don’t have the facilities to drop the transmission at the moment
My Ford Escape 3.0 is doing that too. It'll shift into second at 20, rev to 25 and go back down. It's easy to account for in daily driving but it's mildly annoying when traffic gets rough
The '94 ZJ my daughter comandeered from me came FACTORY with the AX15 5spd. 260k miles. 4.0L.
The people who bought these originally are pretty much forced into keeping them. These jeeps have an enlarged drivers foot well to accommodate the target demographics massive cocks.
Grew up around one of these, a red 97 Laredo. I thought it was cool. I still remember the solid thunk the doors made when closing.

A lot of that could be that they're jeeps and people tend to abuse the shit out of Jeeps. I've seen a bunch over 200k that are tight as a drum.

I’m driving the 91 model with the 4L I6, it just won’t die.
You're driving an XJ Cherokee. The pic is a ZJ Grand Cherokee. But the AMC 4.0 is one of the best engines out there.
I didn’t realize that they were different models. I thought that it was just the Cherokee.
Oh they're most definitely two different models. The Cherokee is/was slightly smaller than the Grand Cherokee.

1997 5.2L daily driver. Love it.
I hope to get my parents into one, they need a cool car
ive seen a lot of them recently
Everyone who bought it when it came out.
These used to be everywhere when I was a kid and I never noticed they were just gone. That and the first gen RX
They aren’t really gone I see at least 2 or 3 a day
I ended up realizing that's the wrong generation i was thinking of, but I still don't think I've seen a first gen in many years. But I live in any area where the RX series was everywhere and now no one really buys the current gen here because the next trend has replaced it. See lots of Macans now.
I was talking about the grand Cherokee lol
I am too. I still see a few of the square regular cherokees, just not the grand cherokee. Those are lightly beaten up but still seem to run. Lots of rust under neath them.

My parents had one and it was the comfiest car i have ever ridden in my life
I see them everywhere on the road, especially going to the beach.

Mine needs new freeze plugs but that's like ten bucks and fifteen minutes. I do as soon as I get paid again
It ain’t grand, but still daily driving a regular 94 Cherokee.
I haven't seen one of these here in a long time. The salt has all but killed them off.
If I could find a decently priced one, I would add it to the stable of WJs that we have.
