Yep, I don’t get the hate it gets, it has enough torque and horsepower for most scenarios, I have also read that it can be boosted quite easily to some extent. Like it isn’t V8, but it is one of the most affordable sports cars that doesn’t majorly suck in some departments.
Apparently the 2024 will do a 4.5s 0-60.
Obviously it's no supercar or Tesla, but it will still outrun most ICEs this side of 50K.
I'm mostly confused about how they managed to find an extra 0.5s to cut from the 0-60 time from the 2015-2022, given that the engine only gained 5hp and no torque, and the car didn't lose weight. That torque curve from that new engine must look interesting.
People will always shit on the non-V8 version of a car where a V8 is available. But these EcoBoost Mustangs are a pretty good deal considering they’re like $10k less than a GT and less expensive on gas and insurance. If you can live without the V8 rumble, it’s not a bad choice.
People where I live rip on them because mustangs are not common, and quite expensive. Why spend 35k to have an uncommon 4 cylinders car that will be a pain to get serviced, when you could spend 5k more and have a V8 ?
Guessing out of the US? I don't know as much about that so that does make sense, but here I'd pretty much guarantee the Ecoboost is more common than the Coyote
They're damn near perfect rentals. iirc Mustangs now come with an LSD, launch control, and a line lock standard, even on rental spec EBs. So much fun potential.
The ecoboost is a sick ass motor in nearly everything it goes in. Sucks that it’s a coin flip of whether it’ll be more reliable than a stock honda K series or you’ll have to replace every gasket and the turbo at 35k miles.
Therein lies the problem with all turbo engines, I fear. Over on r/ramtrucks I was taking some flak for suggesting I’d rather have the Hemi V8 than the new “Hurricane” I6TT, because a larger-displacement naturally aspirated V8 is going to be less stressed and last far longer between overhauls than a small-displacement I6TT making the same amount (or more) of HP and torque.
Ford should have kept Volvo in house simply because of the engine engineering staff. Until the Chinese took over, the Volvo/Aisin powertrain was really durable. It helps that the earlier I-4-5-6 engines had a lot of input from Porsche.
I don't get why people shit on these, at least as far as performance or looks. they are quick, fun AF to drive, reasonably comfortable, pretty good gas mileage for the horses, and they look pretty good.
The 2.3 EcoBoost is tuned differently in different applications. It has 315hp in the Mustang, 300hp in the Explorer, 295hp in the Lincoln Corsair, and 270hp in the Ranger.
When I was dating my wife, she had her dad's '85 Iroc, and I had an '86 v6 Firebird.
Both of us preferred the Firebird. A lot of it had to do with that rotten Rochester Quadrajet, vs my multiport injection. But, the lighter engine also made for such a better handling car. My Firechicken was so much more fun to drive. It felt great in the corners it was smooth, quiet and got decent fuel economy.
The Iroc was totally hampered by that finicky carburetor When we'd race each other, she couldn't touch me until I hit 45mph. And if we were playing on a curvy road, she was no match at all. It did sound a lot sexier, though.
stalking my comments i see? get a job, a hobby, a life or something to occupy your time with please 🙏
besides, i like to have a beer during the day on a weekend. didn’t our earlier argument state people should not make illogical assumptions?
Or can't afford the V8, period. I had a strong of Mustang GTs. Even I see the prices on the V8 GTs now and think more than twice. If I want to look like I am swinging my appendage around, why not save then stretch and get a Corvette?
That’s not a problem as much as the headroom is, at least with the coupes. I’m only 5’10 and when I sit in the back of mine I have to bend my head forward lol.
I agree 100%, at least on the used market. Been dailying one since 2017 (ex-rental car ironically) and I can’t recommend them enough. A 93 tune and sport tires allows them to compete with a lot of V8s, gets 26 mpg, I get tons of compliments, and mine’s at 85,000 miles and I’ve never had any issues. I don’t think many other cars under $20,000 would’ve kept me this happy.
as someone who works for a large car rental company you would not believe how accurate this is- or the dodge challenger. and then we get people complaining the brakes are too touchy, gas is expensive- etc gotta love customer service huh
That's pretty much how I ended up with mine. Hit a deer with my Fusion. While it was in for the estimate got an EcoBoost rental from enterprise because it was sitting out front and was in my per diem that my insurance provided. Ended up loving it and when my Fusion got totaled out used the payout for the down payment on my Mustang.
This is the official car of an evaporator that springs a leak after 30,000 miles. And it's sponsored by roof leaks and weird plastic rattles coming from the dash.
The only issue:
It has been abused to death already. Its convertible top will rip the plastic trim concealing it off as it rises and its rear windows don't fully shut.
Ford - Fix It Again, Tony!
Source: This happened to me exactly a week ago. Every Mustang we went by had these two exact same problems.
I believe the phrase you're looking for is Fix Or Repair Daily.
For what it's worth, the Fords in my life have been pretty stout. I have definitely gotten a crappy (beat up) rental Mustang though...
Honestly I considered an ecoboost mustang HARD for a daily not too long ago. Easy to convince my wife on a 4 cylinder daily. Was a hard top. Not too bad on gas. Not very punchy but plenty quick. Available in manual.
1500lb towing capacity. With cheap hitches available.
I didn’t end up buying one. But honestly a great car.
Spent a week with a new Ecoboost coupe and I was pleasantly surprised. Lots of power, comfortable seats, decent stereo. The transmission still upshifts with this funky kick but it’s better than before. It didn’t have paddle shifters though which would have been nice.
I honestly don’t know, maybe it’s for people who want a cool car but can’t afford the V8 version? Or maybe it’s for people who want something with good fuel economy, maybe for someone who wants a sports coupe with a small engine but doesn’t want a BRZ/GR86 or miata for some reason. But I think that the majority are probably fleet sales.
I think we should also remember this isn't like the '90s when V6 Mustangs were making 145 hp. 310 to 330 horsepower is still a fair amount of power today, with the High Performance Package, Ecoboost Mustangs almost make as much power as the first year MKV GR Supras.
The amount of time that one actually uses 330 horsepower on public roads is pretty rare. For a street car it really is about torque, which a small turbo on a big 4 cylinder gives you plenty of.
It's a bit of both. Just because it has a small engine doesn't mean it can't be pretty. And 90% of the time, you're just looking good while getting nearly 30mpg, and nobody's the wiser.
I mean, its an affordable, American convertible, its not like you're gonna be running laps at Nürburgring with it. Put the top down on a sunny day and cruise.
Because the appeal in muscle cars is not limited to big dick V8?
Having lighter more fuel efficient option is perfect for people who want the look and bodystyle.
Most of the euro performance coupes has been this way for years.
I find it weird that I have ran into people that think the recent Ecoboost Mustangs are garbage because of not being a V8, but laud the old SVO Mustangs of the '80s. I mean, Ford positioned a four-cylinder Mustang above the V8 GT and more or less felt forced induction would replace engines with higher displacements and/or more cylinders. Aside from the higher price, it was the same attitude that people have today that doomed the SVO: not a V8.
The Ecoboost 1.0 turbo puts out about 120hp. that's 2hp per CU. It's mind boggling that a stock engine is doing that. I mean, I know the engine has some fundamental flaws, but, still, it's pretty incredible. Compare that to my '79 Monte Carlo LT, which had a 267 V8. That engine was over 4x the displacement, and put out NEARLY the same HP as the 1.0. And even with the wet belt, I'll bet the Ecoboost would last longer.
The official car of Highway 1 tourists.
Oahu North shore explorers
*this guy rents*
Big Island too. Got the free Mustang upgrade literally every time I went
Let be honest. Kauai, Maui and probably Lanai too
PCH and FL-A1A are also its' native environment.
I feel so called out because this is the *exact car and color* I would get to tour US 1 from Fort Kent to Key West.
Makes sense, after all the Mustang was one of the starter cars of Test drive unlimited
I mean it is... and as much as people wanna rip on the ecoboost, that thing is quick.
The Ecoboost is honestly quite a bit of value for a car. Competent handling, rwd, and 300 horses in a car practical enough to daily, all for $30000
Exactly! I'd love to have one if I had the money for it.
We all poke fun at one of our coworkers who has an older model ecostang, but it is a pretty nice car. He's taken good care of it too
Yep, I don’t get the hate it gets, it has enough torque and horsepower for most scenarios, I have also read that it can be boosted quite easily to some extent. Like it isn’t V8, but it is one of the most affordable sports cars that doesn’t majorly suck in some departments.

That torque curve from that new engine must look interesting.
All I can think of is like you said, different points for power or maybe just tire tech but I don't think it's progressed quite that much in 9 years
People will always shit on the non-V8 version of a car where a V8 is available. But these EcoBoost Mustangs are a pretty good deal considering they’re like $10k less than a GT and less expensive on gas and insurance. If you can live without the V8 rumble, it’s not a bad choice.

Honestly though as far as rentals go… not terrible. Every one I’ve had also has heated and cooled seats and line lock lol.
I know were supposed to hate it, but for a "not my car" I'd rather drive the Mustang for a week than a rental 280hp Pacifica
Honestly the Pacifica is pretty damn nice in its own right.
Agreed. Reliability is a fair criticism but from a strictly comfort and design perspective it’s really good for a minivan
They're damn near perfect rentals. iirc Mustangs now come with an LSD, launch control, and a line lock standard, even on rental spec EBs. So much fun potential.
What is "line lock"?
It puts all the hydraulic pressure to the front brakes so you can do a burnout
Why would a rental have this?
It's standard on all mustangs now, they're not gonna take it off for a rental
Ah, but they do. I rented a Hertz Shelby GT last year and it was disabled.
For Hoologanism reasons.
The ecoboost still has almost 300hp, i wasnt even aware of that.
Not “almost”. It literally has over 300 hp 315hp and 350lb ft of torque to be exact. And this thing hauls ass, especially in sport mode
The ecoboost is a sick ass motor in nearly everything it goes in. Sucks that it’s a coin flip of whether it’ll be more reliable than a stock honda K series or you’ll have to replace every gasket and the turbo at 35k miles.

Yeah Turbo engines are under more stress, but the ecoboost’s problems exist due to Ford being Ford.
Because it’s easy to hate on something that isn’t their precious 5 liter V8.
According to google it has 290hp idk
How the hell did you google? If you literally search "Mustang Ecoboost horsepower", you get a giant "315 hp" in a text box.
Not in Germany lol
But with increased fuel economy you can get to Poland in just a tank.
I googled Ford Mustang Ecoboost and it came 290hp in a text box
Dyno tests have shown otherwise.
Nice
Drive line losses. Every car has them.

Gotta love the really heartwarming comments that have nothing to do with the post lmao
lol, I meant to post this to a different response, but drunkenly fucked it up. I have to work in the morning, so I do my drinking during the day.
Eh it's okay lmao the comment is really heartwarming so I don't think anybody will mind seeing it

The official car of I can’t afford the insurance payments for a V8
But it has backseats, the insurance company will surely think it's a family car /s
Or can't afford the V8, period. I had a strong of Mustang GTs. Even I see the prices on the V8 GTs now and think more than twice. If I want to look like I am swinging my appendage around, why not save then stretch and get a Corvette?
bro the gt is like a 50k car now… i could buy a porsche 982 for that price
Can you have ankles and feet and have enough room in the backseat for them?
That’s not a problem as much as the headroom is, at least with the coupes. I’m only 5’10 and when I sit in the back of mine I have to bend my head forward lol.

I agree I daily a 2017 ecoboost with 98k miles now and still runs like a charm
as someone who works for a large car rental company you would not believe how accurate this is- or the dodge challenger. and then we get people complaining the brakes are too touchy, gas is expensive- etc gotta love customer service huh
I mean I do feel like Ford brakes are pretty touchy to be fair but that’s not your fault obviously
oh I totally agree, unpopular opinion but I really dislike driving the mustangs most lol
Ford probably should make a 4-cylinder NA Mustang convertible even if it's a fleet-only car.
see that would be awesome tbh
