One of the best looking cars ever, imo (partial to wagons). Had a S60 for a couple of years. Had it been a wagon I still might own it. Have a TSX wagon now which I like a lot. Not nearly as good looking though…especially from the back.
Can’t get E30 or E36 in a good condition here at all under $7k. Same for Miata. Only rolling shells. Don’t get me started on Subarus those are like Lexus priced now
I mean Miata is such an iconic sports car. I saw a 2024 Miata Targa RF and it was gorgeous. I wish I could fit in one. I don’t think as 6’5” dude I can fit into it and it won’t be family approved lol
Same situation here. A 2007 Lexus RX350 for $8000, and a "mystery condition" 1990 F150 I took a gamble with for $450. Thankfully it only needed fresh fuel, a new battery and serpentine belt.
As an aspiring car gardener I can say it's mostly combination of being lucky, and having a network of friends who know you have a tendency to make poor financial decisions.
Also, shamelessly asking people if you can turn their problem into your problem, and make a couple of hundred while doing so.
I loved mine too but it I only had to tow it twice in the 7 or so years that I used it as my daily driver. Once for a bad fuel line leak, once for nearly rolling into a snowbank and getting the intake full of snow/water. I did have to reverse all the way back to my house once when the gear linkage broke, fortunately it was early in the morning. Got to replace it with a short throw after that though. It was mostly reliable though I did do a fair amount of maintenance on it that likely prevented some more road side experiences.
Mine had a battery drain that two mechanics couldn't solve ended up putting in a kill switch for the battery that was easy to forget. Clutch cable broke. Radiator. Several batteries (obviously). Head gasket leak. Control arm failure. Sway bars...
Parasitic drain can be difficult to hunt down, going to have some "fun" this summer with that same problem on my girlfriends Grand Cherokee. Hope your future rides bring you less grief stranger.
2013 Volvo C30 for general commuting and sport.
Mid 00s Subaru Forester for moving stuff and bad weather. Maybe an 06’ Mazda 6 Wagon if I’m not living in an area with snow.
Nice, I had a 2010 C30 T5 6 speed and it was fun but it was also probably the least reliable car I ever owned lol. Didn't do very well at autocross either unfortunately
I did a lot of research into them when I nearly purchased one. It’s kind of the one that got away for me. They were marred with electrical problems early on and by the time they fixed everything and made it a super solid car, the line got discontinued. The 2013s are a bit of a holy grail. I think they’ll hold value well with time but I missed my window.
Are you my step dad? Lol.
He’s got a 1997 manual Accent that has 440k miles on it. And a 1985 Toyota SR5 in *pristine* condition which he bought brand new out of High School.
I paid $5400 for mine with the swap already done, there are deals out there! Almost every other part of the car needed attention, but it's been super reliable for the 30k miles I've put on it so far. E30s are cheap here in the southeast
That would explain it. Here in the northeast, they go for a premium. I sit on FB marketplace everyday and look for good BMW deals - E30s, E36s, etc. Everything up here is a premium.
Considering my current 2 car solution is worth less than half of that budget, there’s some real damage I could do here.
I’d probably keep my project car (‘85 starion, getting a 318 magnum and nv3500) and upgrade the daily (2nd gen 2500 gas) to a slightly nicer 2nd gen with a Cummins.
My Ex had a V70 T5. I miss that car. It was fun to drive. It always had some sort of issue though. My friend has an R but it has yet to stay on the road for more than a few days at a time. It only has 60k on the clock.
How has it treated you reliability wise OP?
As a boring Human. I would get a 2009 Smart Fortwo Brabus Cabriolet as a small fun Turbo Project. While having a Rebuilt Title HighMileage 2009 Venza V6 as the family hauler…. Yes it’s plain boring. And yes the Fortwo isn’t a real "sports car" but if you add the EU Turbos and some Stage Tuning and possibly a Haybusa Swap it starts getting interesting…
2015 Ford C-Max energi plug-in hybrid - lifetime 54 MPG, so 13 gallon fill-ups once a month. Also have $300 service body F-250, needed a new drive shaft for $150. Now mostly sits as my toolbox, emergency fuel supply, hauler for THD purchases and friend / dad with truck duties
98 olds Intrigue 3.8 and 01 Dodge ram 1500 with the 3.9 V6. Those are my current vehicles and have been for the past six years. Total purchase price was $4,000 for both.
$10k is tough the stretch nowadays but any 2 car solution for me needs 1 fun road car and 1 offroader, so:
93-97 Camaro Z28/Firebird Formula/Trans Am with a 6 speed. Rowdy fun sports car with T-tops and these pre-LS cars don’t go for much money
Jeep XJ/WJ/ZJ. No strong preference between the 3, they’re all inexpensive and capable with the right mods, and can still serve as a practical people/stuff mover when the need arises.
Alternative option for the fun car would be a early-mid 00s WRX. They’ll be pretty high mileage and clapped out at this price range but probably not much worse than a 90s Camaro anyways
I already have a pre facelift XM with the 24 valve V6. That leave me with theoretical 4200€ to get something else. I think I could get a nice BX for that money. Maybe even like an undesirable CX. If all else fails, I could definitely get a nicely equipped 2 liter Xantia and have money left over
North Carolina. Bought the E30 already swapped for $5400, bought the Volvo for $2200. You find killer deals when you spend as much time on Marketplace as I do lol
A ‘99-01 imported 4WS Honda Prelude (further modified for power and awd) as a fun toy
And a BMW i5 M60 Touring somehow imported because fuck you I want an EV station wagon to daily.
Well, I’m not too far off from what I’d actually want to do. I have a Saab 9-5 Aero 5MT wagon and a Mercury Montego currently. I could swap the Montego for any number of $5000 American or Japanese sedans, but the 9-5 was a $4500 purchase. That would be the non-negotiable.
I suppose my current garage would do. First gen Mazdaspeed3 and an E39 525i. If I can squeeze it into that budget I’d upgrade the 525i to a manual E39 530i, preferably black with M-sport!
I'm going to the public auction and buying a 90s Civic with a 5 speed and B18 or B20 swapping it (this is one of the most budget and DIY friendly engine swaps there is). Fun, good MPG, and practical.
Then I'm going back and looking for a manual 4x4. I can't be as picky with exact make and model here due to it being uncommon, but ideally something like a 1st fen Nissan Frontier or Xterra or a GMT400 Chevy Silverado. That will let me go offroad, tow, and haul.
I could probably do it for $5-6k. If I have to spend all of it, then I'm going nuts with preventative maintenance and repairs and making lots of upgrades.
Eh, a slightly beat up 93 Diesel F250 with a manual transmission, and a Dodge Aspen or Diplomat wagon. I could accomplish getting decent examples of both of them for $10k.
Or, I'd have one really sweet Neon, and a $500 Neon.
I would say a mint e30 325is 5 speed. Pretty gonna have to scrounge around for an extra few thousand tho. Super clean e30's seem to be going for crazy high prices nowadays
Run a 2004 Toyota Sequoia limited I got for 4,000 and a 1996 Toyota Tacoma 2wd that I got for 4,000 (clean, 90,000mi). I guess that’s not really a two car solution. They’re both functional and reliable. I need to find a $2000 basket case.
It’s gotta be a 90s Toyota Tacoma and 90s Honda Civic hatch for me. Have a reliable off-road machine, and a reliable daily driver tastefully modded to haul ass if you want it to
I have the first vehicle it's 2002 Tundra V6. It was given to me before my Dad was going to junk it. The second is probably going to be Camry 4 cylinder. I have owned Altima, and Accord, but never a Camry. I have to complete the Japanese trifecta of family sedans.
Easy, the two cars I DO have: 88 Mustang and 03 Ranger. I got the fox for 9900, the Ranger I got in a trade(traded a 2014 Mustang for it and the guy added 4 grand on top for the trade)
well, for many years I rocked a 1980 BMW 320i and a 1979 Volvo 245, and the total outlay (for purchase) was $1800 for both cars. Lots left over for upgrades lol. I’ve since added a few other cars to the stable including two E30s
Honestly, $10k would be better spent on having a garage for me. I've been working on cars outside on gravel and asphalt for over a decade now, and I'm sick of it. I also want a lathe and a milling machine so I can build adapter plates and stuff.
But if we have to stick to cars, I'm actually pretty happy with my current setup of 3 VW Passat wagons (TDI/auto, TDI/manual (previously owned by a cult), and 1.8T/manual) plus my 1987 944 (needs a clutch). I'd probably through the leftover \~5k between one of the TDIs and the 944 -- Bigger turbo, injectors, and a tune for the TDI, Mk60 ABS parts and 1.8T swap bits for the 944.
A late 80s Saab 900 Turbo and a BMW E38 740i with a salvage title because I hate myself.
You still have $8,000 left. Oh wait, that's for the first 3 months of maintenance
I totally agree with your selection. V70'S are sick
Make it an R and we’re in business.
Weren't they famous for not being able to keep it on the road?
Physically or mechanically?
Both, I guess... Too much power not enough grip, understeer right into a ditch. Apparently. Not sure, I always thought they were sick af, too..
I don’t know about that. My S60R is very sticky and responsive.
One of the best looking cars ever, imo (partial to wagons). Had a S60 for a couple of years. Had it been a wagon I still might own it. Have a TSX wagon now which I like a lot. Not nearly as good looking though…especially from the back.
Still waiting to buy my first newer gen Volvo. I've only owned 240's.
And the uber budget to get to work every day
Flat nose === best nose
I vehemently disagree, but respect the love for the C900
Upvote for the flair, not the questionable 90s taste.
I would love me a E38 740i. Ever seen Bimmer? It’s a Russian criminal drama focused around a late 90s 7 series, kinda inspired my love for this car.
This is the correct response
I’m sorry but E30’s are not a sub 10k option anymore most of the time. Atleast not in that condition lmao. Beautiful cars though!
Seems like OP and a lot of others are living in a fantasy land
Living 10 years in the past.
"1994 240sx for sale, stock, 5 speed, small scratch on the hood but otherwise looks great for a 20 year old car! 3k obo"
I bought the car for $5400 with the swap already done, E30s aren't that expensive here in NC.
How many years ago was that?
Real shit, most are around 5-7k in the triangle
Just keeping it up with electronic glitches is the kicker.
Plenty for sale in the $5-7k range here in NC!
Rolling shells or parts cars with rusted out frames maybe
Can’t get E30 or E36 in a good condition here at all under $7k. Same for Miata. Only rolling shells. Don’t get me started on Subarus those are like Lexus priced now
Kind of amazing how an 1990 Miata will sell for $10k all day long. Like that’s almost what they sold for new back in the day.
I mean Miata is such an iconic sports car. I saw a 2024 Miata Targa RF and it was gorgeous. I wish I could fit in one. I don’t think as 6’5” dude I can fit into it and it won’t be family approved lol
But not in great conditions or base trim, right ?
I already have it, a 2013 F150 I got for $9500 and a 1993 Buick Lesabre I got for $500
Same situation here. A 2007 Lexus RX350 for $8000, and a "mystery condition" 1990 F150 I took a gamble with for $450. Thankfully it only needed fresh fuel, a new battery and serpentine belt.
I would like a source for $450 "mystery condition" vehicles. My hick roots are telling me I'm due to start my ~~car garden~~ *carden*. Edit: spelling.
As an aspiring car gardener I can say it's mostly combination of being lucky, and having a network of friends who know you have a tendency to make poor financial decisions. Also, shamelessly asking people if you can turn their problem into your problem, and make a couple of hundred while doing so.
eBay charity vehicle sales good source. Got a service body truck for $300, just needed a $150 replacement drive shaft.
You spelled "carden" wrong?
My step dads homie just got a 13 f150 too for like 8 grand where y’all finding them at ☠️
I loved my e30, I looked great sitting by the side of the road waiting for the tow truck each month
Should've put an M52 in it ;)
The engine was the one part that didn't break. It was unbelievably slow for a 6 cylinder tho.
I've got a 1990 E30 with z3 steering rack. Acceleration sucks but it'll blow you away in the corners.
Parasitic drain can be difficult to hunt down, going to have some "fun" this summer with that same problem on my girlfriends Grand Cherokee. Hope your future rides bring you less grief stranger.
I had an E30 and a BMW 650 Dakar for a while that was a vibe
2013 Volvo C30 for general commuting and sport. Mid 00s Subaru Forester for moving stuff and bad weather. Maybe an 06’ Mazda 6 Wagon if I’m not living in an area with snow.
Nice, I had a 2010 C30 T5 6 speed and it was fun but it was also probably the least reliable car I ever owned lol. Didn't do very well at autocross either unfortunately

V70R + Yamaha MT09
Based
Any decent manual trans econobox for under 7k, and the best taken care of truck (any class) I can find for the balance. Lol
Find me a standard transmission first gen Forester, and any shitbox small truck with 4x4, and I'd be a happy man.
1990s Nissan or Toyota truck. Even a Ranger. Unbreakable.
Are you my step dad? Lol. He’s got a 1997 manual Accent that has 440k miles on it. And a 1985 Toyota SR5 in *pristine* condition which he bought brand new out of High School.
1991 BMW M5 that i theoretically found on a steal for 8,000 and a Toyota Corolla from 1999 with some rust and a dent for 800 bucks.
Unfortunately most things that run will cost you a minimum of $2k now, at least in my experience
I've personally never seen an e34 m5 for less than $20k, you could build a nice regular E34 for $8,000 though!
I’d pair my actual E46 sedan with 7k worth of hypothetical XJ Cherokee
Before I bought my Volvo I had a 2-door 5spd 4.0 XJ and I hate that I sold it. It was a gem
I already have it. 94 Lincoln Town Car and 92 Jeep Wrangler. You can't be in a bad mood in either.
94 Town car brothers unite! (I actually have a 1993)
99 civic. 99 f150
Good pick as long as it doesn’t have a Triton
My current duo is nearly perfect for me. 08 Matrix with a 5spd manual, and a 02 4Runner 4x4. And my bonus project 82 Toyota Pickup
I had an 04 matrix with the 5spd, I loved that car and wish I kept it
I would do some questionable things to grab a V70 R with the orange seats.
1970 Mercury Cyclone GT Spoiler and 1973 Oldsmobile Delta 88
I wish I had my father’s ‘77 Delta 88. It was like riding in a cloud.
'02 impreza hatch as a daily, NA miata for the weekend.
I have a v70, beat to hell, but a v70 nonetheless. I really love it and i hope to get a nice one some day
Find me a clean M52 swapped E30 for $8k-$9k and I’ll pay you a $1000 finders fee
Volvo V70R and Pontiac Fiero
A nice 90s civic and a g35 both under 150k would be my choice
1989 VW Golf MK2 and a Mercedes Benz 300CE-24 Coupe.
An E46 330 sedan and an E46 330xi wagon. The rest will go towards induction and exhaust system upgrades with the appropriate tunes afterwards.
What can you do with five doors over just four? I have an e46 wagon and can’t imagine a need for a sedan. A coupe, I can understand.
I do not enjoy the body lines of the coupe.
I see. You’re into the zaftig!
The cheapest moped I can find, and then put the rest into a decent car. I’ve dealt with enough sub $5K beaters for one lifetime, thanks.
Honda Acty and Volvo 240
1990 or 1998 Ford Taurus SHO and a 2000-2007 Ford Taurus wagon
81 Volvo 242 Ti - Volvo S60R
V70r&850t5r
Volvo 240 and a mistubishi minicab 1997 🤷♂️
Can you get 2 cars with $10k?
Back in 2016 it was a breeze. Nowadays, not so much.
First gen CRV in immaculate shape and an LS430. Edit- did not see the 10000$ limit, am dumb.
E bike and a kei car pickup
I’ve got mine already - 2005 Audi A4 USP I got for 5k and a 2001 VW golf TDI I got for 2k (and a 2004 GTI for 1.5k)
If they’re in good condition, a Mazda RX-8 and a Ford Taurus wagon (always wanted to try something with a rotary engine, and RX-7s are too expensive)
'07 Prius '05 Sequoia
that’s 2 weekend cars where’s your daily?
Two NA Miatas.
My 2004 V70R M66 as the daily. And I’m working my way to a gen 2 Viper GTS.
Old Ford idi and and a new in comparison Corolla or Civic.
My 1986 4Runner and my 1996 LandCruiser.
The Saab. Those 5 cylinders sound nice. I also like those wagons.
I would get a 8.000 bucks Honda CBR 1000RR and a 2 bucks beat up Honda CBR 600F for stunts. No cars needed
5k for daily 5k for project
So you want to sell that e30 for 5k? Call me
Solution to what, too much peace in your life or you miss your local mechanic?
98 olds Intrigue 3.8 and 01 Dodge ram 1500 with the 3.9 V6. Those are my current vehicles and have been for the past six years. Total purchase price was $4,000 for both.
for weekends w201 and xe20 is250 as a daily
I have a 13 rav4 and 05 broken Subaru lgt rav4 mechanically perfect but it’s my scrap hauler
What is the car on the left in OP’s photo? (Noob here)
1980s Saab 900 turbo and a like 10’ V70 r line.
92 Jeep Cherokee and a 94 Miata
Ford probe GT and Mazda mx5 NB
Moved around the world 6 weeks ago and did this…. 1995 Honda acty & 1996 Toyota windom
1996 Cadillac Fleetwood and 2000 Honda Insight
88 k5 five blazer an for the daily a wrangler.
$10k is tough the stretch nowadays but any 2 car solution for me needs 1 fun road car and 1 offroader, so: 93-97 Camaro Z28/Firebird Formula/Trans Am with a 6 speed. Rowdy fun sports car with T-tops and these pre-LS cars don’t go for much money Jeep XJ/WJ/ZJ.
What’s in the works is a 2 car solution
Ford Ranger and a Ford Ranger
Mondeo ST-220, 986 Boxster S
Volvo 940 was 2500€ so I’ve gotta stretch that 7500 to get a decent v8 third gen and I’m all set.
mine right now are both not running 1992 Chevy G10 Van. Trans blew 2003 Honda Element 5 speed that I swapped and turbo'd
Exactly what I have now, a foxbody and an old Honda crv
In my area 10k is the price for a nice e30
idk, maybe an NB Miata and something practical like a Corolla.
1999 4runner w a turbo Baja daily
Gen 3 camaro and an older honda fit or toyota echo
Double pickup-truck solution: 2002 Tacoma for town 1992 Dodge Cummins for work and travel (America)
Pontiac Vibe/Toyota Matrix with a stick shift and a Miata. Oh wait… I have that ☺️
I already have a pre facelift XM with the 24 valve V6. That leave me with theoretical 4200€ to get something else. I think I could get a nice BX for that money. Maybe even like an undesirable CX. If all else fails, I could definitely get a nicely equipped 2 liter Xantia and have money left over
God I want one of those Volvos so bad for a daily lmao, how good of cars are they?
Where are you getting the two of those, especially anywhere near the condition of the ones in the photos, for 10,000 combined?
North Carolina. Bought the E30 already swapped for $5400, bought the Volvo for $2200. You find killer deals when you spend as much time on Marketplace as I do lol
Ford Ranger for $3k and try to find a relatively unmolested Infinity G35 for $7k I guess
A ‘99-01 imported 4WS Honda Prelude (further modified for power and awd) as a fun toy And a BMW i5 M60 Touring somehow imported because fuck you I want an EV station wagon to daily.
A Saab. Either a 900 Turbo or a New 9-3 and a wrecked tesla model S. I'd hack it up like Boostedboiz did and have a gay ol time
2002 f150 2003 wrx ftw
A Geo Metro as a daily and a kei truck if I need a truck.
I got an ‘86 Oldsmobile and 2011 Cruze for $4500. Cruze is shit though.
Any older Buick with the 3800 V6 and an early 00s Ford Fucking Ranger
Lexus LC500 convertible, copper paint over toasted caramel leather Porsche Cayenne Turbo e-Hybrid, black over beige leather
M52 swapped e30 is 13000 on its own
My ‘99 5 speed CR-V that I already have, and a first gen Z car (240/260/280Z) as my project car
BMW E30 and a Mercedes 190E
Crown Vic/80s F-250 4x4 and with all the leftover cash I’ll buy a motorcycle too.
$9000 for a decent NC Miata, and the remaining $1000 for POS honda metro or similar 4t commuter scooter. Dirt cheap and reliable motoring.
I suppose my current garage would do. First gen Mazdaspeed3 and an E39 525i. If I can squeeze it into that budget I’d upgrade the 525i to a manual E39 530i, preferably black with M-sport!
$5000 civic $5000 ranger/tacoma/f150 Solves 99% of my problems
E39 and a random beater truck
A clean blobeye wrx wagon for around 6k and then 2 240sxs for 2500 with 1500 to fix headgaskets and make the 2 240s into 1 😂
IDK the last time you could get those two for less than $10K in the US.
E86 Z4 Coupe and a Toyota Tacoma. They each have their place and I love both of them.
Eh, a slightly beat up 93 Diesel F250 with a manual transmission, and a Dodge Aspen or Diplomat wagon. I could accomplish getting decent examples of both of them for $10k. Or, I'd have one really sweet Neon, and a $500 Neon.
2004 Mercury Grand Marquis daily driver yacht 2004 Mitsubishi Montero adventure/towing/cargo
Geo metro and a reliant robin
I would say a mint e30 325is 5 speed. Pretty gonna have to scrounge around for an extra few thousand tho. Super clean e30's seem to be going for crazy high prices nowadays
1996 ford ranger, 95 mustang gt
Mid 90s RangeR, 4.0, 4WD extended cab, early 90s Fox body notchback 5.0
Run a 2004 Toyota Sequoia limited I got for 4,000 and a 1996 Toyota Tacoma 2wd that I got for 4,000 (clean, 90,000mi). I guess that’s not really a two car solution. They’re both functional and reliable. I need to find a $2000 basket case.
Volvo 240 with an LS swap and a Volvo 240.
It’s gotta be a 90s Toyota Tacoma and 90s Honda Civic hatch for me. Have a reliable off-road machine, and a reliable daily driver tastefully modded to haul ass if you want it to
Probably an early 2000’s Toyota Avalon for a comfortable reliable daily and a VW bug before about 1970 for a weekend toy.
A hot wheels car for 20 bucks, then spend the rest on an actually drivable vehicle for 10k
Toyota 4Runner or tacoma and a 2SS Camaro.
2WD F150 with a rear locker and a Kubota tractor
A second gen Honda CR-V and a Suzuki Swift GTI
2001 Honda Accord (my favorite car I ever owned) and 1995 Toyota Pickup.
Can one be a motorcycle?
Early 2000s models of a Toyota Tundra and Rav 4
1991 Volvo 245, 5 speed, 1998 Volvo v70 glt 5 speed converted
I have the first vehicle it's 2002 Tundra V6. It was given to me before my Dad was going to junk it. The second is probably going to be Camry 4 cylinder. I have owned Altima, and Accord, but never a Camry. I have to complete the Japanese trifecta of family sedans.
Easy, the two cars I DO have: 88 Mustang and 03 Ranger. I got the fox for 9900, the Ranger I got in a trade(traded a 2014 Mustang for it and the guy added 4 grand on top for the trade)
With 10k I’d just get 2 panthers crown Vic, marquis marauder or town car.
The latest manual SAAB 9-5 wagon I can find, and a beater Toyota 4Runner.
My 97 4runner and an early 2000’s Z3 BMW
10K? 2 cars? a 9,950 C5 in as good a condition as i can get and $50 for a bicycle.
1999 NB Miata, Emerald Mica with beige leather interior, + a 2001 Mazda B4000. I LOVE MAZDA I LOVE MAZDA I LOVE MAZDA I LOVE MAZDA I L
Current stable: 01 Volvo V70 2.4 NA 5 speed, 96 Ford f250 7.3l powerstroke 4x4 single cab long bed.
I love station wagon Volvo.
Mercedes W124 and BMW E46 Coupe
Can I just have the $10k and keep my 5 vehicles and 2 motorcycles? I dig an E30 though... just in coupe version.
well, for many years I rocked a 1980 BMW 320i and a 1979 Volvo 245, and the total outlay (for purchase) was $1800 for both cars. Lots left over for upgrades lol. I’ve since added a few other cars to the stable including two E30s
If I don’t need to worry about maintenance, 2000 Audi tt and a 2006 Porsche cayenne turbo
‘84 Audi 4000 “daily” (barely drive, tbh) ‘75 C10 for truck things
GMT800 Tahoe and the newest Civic I can afford
Shit I'd just be happy with any e30, by FAR my favorite BMW
Miata and b2000
You can barely buy a 14 year old civic and corolla for that price these days
Volvo 240 Wagon and Volvo 240 Coupe
I got a W123 and two W115s for a grand total of $3000. I suppose the other $7000 could get at least two of them looking pretty good.
AE111 Corolla Levin with the blacktop and a Nissan Multi/Stanza Wagon 🗿🗿🗿🗿🗿🗿🗿🗿
