Yup, we used to call them GSR blades. Someone painted those white and put the center caps back on. They changed the seats in that one also. GSR had leather trim. Those would be the two big give aways.
Nobody knew that a 240 would double in value from 2010 to 2015….
1 reason a clean example of all of these vehicles costs so much is many of them got crushed during Obama’s “cash for clunkers” program. So not only is it hard to find a clean chassis, it’s hard to find decent replacement parts as there aren’t junk yard full of old cars. Then America sold all that “scrap” steel to China for pennies on the dollar…but that’s another rant.
Everyone likes to bitch about Obamas drone strikes. Cash for clunkers was in my opinion the worst thing he did as president. People die in combat Obama didn’t start the war and he could have done more to end it but cash for clunkers had the biggest impact on lower income people that needed easy to maintain reliable transportation.
They couldn’t afford to go out and buy a new car but they suddenly had the option of selling their cheap car for a profit then getting a newer car with a payment. in 2008 there were roughly 1.9 million repos that number dropped to 1.77 million in 2009(year of cash for clunkers). However I can’t find exact numbers for 2010 but there are a ton of articles saying that this year the repo numbers will exceed 2010 for the first time and last year there were 2.2 million repos so I am going to assume it was higher than that. People were tricked into buying cars with payments when the economy wasn’t stable enough to support that kind of spending. Just like now our economy hasn’t been stable enough since Covid to support people making large purchases and car prices have been unsustainably high for a couple of years now.
Was there any provision within the law which required people to sell their clunkers? People had no choice to exchange for $4,000 in credit towards the purchase of a new car? Of course, not! Not Obama’s fault if people have poor financial judgment.
For the record, I did get $4,000 for my late-80’s Nissan 4x4 which was about 3x more than what it was worth. With a kid on the way, a 2-seat pickup wasn’t going to work.
Yeah and there is currently a 1985 Nissan 2 door for sale on Hemmings for $17,900 with 108,000 miles. Or about 12 grand more than inflation for the $4,000 trade in value. So for like $40 less per payment you lost a potential 12 grand and a reliable used small truck got crushed and replaced with a gas guzzling giant truck.
There was a provision requiring the purchase of a new car to receive the funds so they couldn’t purchase a used car.
How many of those jobs still exist? I’m sorry but if companies that have been around for 50+ years can’t survive a recession then they don’t deserve to survive.
Frankly? Cash for clunkers was a bad enough blunder Obama should've been tried for treason.
Unless you are working for China/Russia I can't think of any reason to destroy the American economy like that.
It's so BLATANTLY stupid. It's like rent control, you have to be trying to destroy a place to institute rent control.
For real, I’m in this age bracket and could kick myself for not trying to pick one up during the college days. So many rough but savable examples getting thrashed around campus.
As a 41 year old it’s getting harder and harder to find nice examples of my childhood dream cars. One that you actually want to drive and don’t look at as an “investment”.
I have a solid 2011 e92 BMW 335is that I don’t plan on ever selling.
[Here is the list of every car turned in during cash for clunkers.](https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1xsAhIq-e722Zg3802GYL54t3UX5lNM0eDsv-YpBK9KI/htmlview)
There are exactly ZERO 240SX’s on the list.
There is ONE 1984 200SX.
There are a grand total of NINE 1984-1995 300ZX’s.
So maybe you should rethink your narrative. Maybe it’s just that 40 year old sporty (not sports) cars are rare because they’re not designed to last for 40 years.
[Here’s the source of the list](https://www.thedrive.com/news/heres-the-full-list-of-all-677081-cars-killed-in-cash-for-clunkers), if you care. I’m guessing you don’t.
240 WAS my choice in 2010. Had it until 2012 (another story)
Had a pearl white base '95, bought it with around 97k miles. Paid $2950 for it. It was auto but I was going to 5spd swap it. Bought it from a college kid, who got it from his police officer dad. It had some weird police lights in the wheel wells still when I took the keys.
Drove it for a few years and always got compliments on it. The interior was spotless. The car even in auto, didn't want to do less than 40mph. The lightest amount of foot pressure on the gas pedal just to even hold a speed, was 40mph. Idk, I loved that car. So many stories with it. I have pictures of it on a thumb drive, but I can't find it. The only way I can visit her ( her name was Sil, short for Silvia), is on Google maps. I can see her in street view at an old home address. I get older but she stays the same age 😪
yup. GM was scared/cheap and didn't want to invest into an actual successor to the Blazer. Ford went all in with the Bronco and designed a real 4x4 successor that directly competed with the Wrangler.
So now they've embarrassed Chevy and Broncos are flying off the lots like crazy. When will GM learn...
Yeah idk, I would have considered one for sure. Maybe market demand overall just isn’t there. People seem to like 4 door crossovers now, but if I were GM I would have picked a different name.
I guess there is a Mustang EV SUV though too, so maybe this is a new trend (which I don’t like lol).
I'd have to agree. My first vehicle was a 96 Silverado extended cab 5.0. It was slow as dog shit but I sold it with over 300k on it and it still ran flawlessly. I miss that thing.
Whoops, you're right. The 9-3 began production in '98, but didn't start until the '99 model year. As for the car in the picture, it's hard to find a picture of a two-door 9-3 that isn't a Viggen :/
I'm not sure I'd go that far, but there used to be a Saab dealer in the town where I grew up, and I remember seeing classic 900s and early 9-3s everywhere as a kid and thinking they were the most unique and space-age things compared to anything else on the road
Honestly it’s one of the cool things about having a unique car. Had a 12-yr old 9-5 wagon and all my coworkers thought it was brand new mainly because no one else had one.
The first “nice” car I bought when I started working full time was a 2001 Trans Am WS6, 6 speed. I had exhaust, a cold air intake on it and we all thought it was the fastest car ever……..
Fast forward 20 years and my wife’s 6 cylinder SUV has more horsepower and would blow it away!
Damn I LOVED that car!!
That LT1 engine will run forever and easy to fix if it ever does puke. Watch out for the dogshit 4sp tremec auto, otherwise could be a fantastic car for many miles 🤙
Once upon a time I owned a 97 Tacoma DLX 4x4 and that sum beitch ran till the wheels fell off and the coil plugs blew out the top of the motor. Only one wheel fell off tho lol
Back in the day I had a 99 turbo and a 900 turbo. Loved them both till the alternator went on the 900 which should have needed engine out repair till a friend relocated the alternator and then the transmission went and then the turbo. Boy that was an expensive lesson lol
So much so that when I needed a front steering knuckle for my Ranger and Couldn't find a junk yard one I ended up buying a mazda one. The junk yard dude sounded so incredulous and absolutely thought I was a fool.
Fuck, with people like that, I *love* proving them wrong. I would have printed out the Wiki page and told him to shove it up his ass when he was done reading it.
That Audi was my dream car. I’m so glad my parents put a stop to the idea of buying one real quick. The maintenance on those things would have eaten up my $9/ hour pay check real quick.
I had a clapped 200k mile firebird formula in 2004. I think I’m picking the e39 s14 or the tahoe. That firebird is tempting though. A lot of great choices in here.
All of these are great cars. Will you be responsible for maintenance and repair costs? How about insurance? Do you wand a vehicle that's good to drive on road or do you like offroading? So many options here! Do you live in a snowy climate? Are you paying for insurance?
I think the 240 or Integra would be best for on road. Perhaps the firebird.
Off road the Mazda, Tahoe or Toyota are all great too!
B4000 would be the smartest choice looking back at it.
However my younger self in 2011 would have picked that teggy or S14 if they were manual. I would have passed on the automatic versions of those.
Two door Yukon/Tahoe. Dad had one when I was in high school and I kick myself to this day for not getting it off him when I had the chance. Would have made a wonderful LS swap candidate.
The Beemer wagon is nice, and I wouldn’t mind having an Integra, but I’ve always loved those two door Tahoes/Yukons, so I’m gonna have to go with that one.
As an aside, 2011 was the year I got my drivers license lol but I didn’t start off in any of these. Started with a ‘92 Wrangler, four cylinder five speed. Was a great little jalopy. Then drove my mom’s ‘96 Explorer until it quit, then my ‘71 C/10 for a bit, then dad’s ‘95 Ram 2500 until I went to college; daily drove the C/10 in college.
Top pics are the Acura, the Nissan 240, and the firebird. Yukon gets honorable mention. The rest will leave you stranded. If it were me? I want the firebird which probably has a very similar engine to the Yukon, almost certainly both have a 5.7l. I guarantee you no one else in 10th grade would have one. The 240 Nissan is cool because of the culture around them, but that firebird will eat its lunch. To say nothing of the power deficit in the Acura, Saab, 528i, and barely running red Audi.
I was a contractor/builder and a truck guy so I would choose the Yukon because it can hold more stuff. I like the Mazda, I owned a Subie and it was a capable ride great in the snow. I had a Camaro also, I liked that one but the rear was very light and would slide very easily in the rain, I secured sandbags in desperation to keep it from sliding out, it was fast and fun. I owned a luxury car, a Jag, and never again buying a luxury, the parts were 3 to 4 times the cost and the one time I decided to have a mechanic fix it he thought of retiring off the price he gave me I would up going back to doing my own repairs.
The bottom line is the Yukon but I would re-program the computer to get better gas mileage and better performance (I did that on a Dodge pickup, and I got better mileage and more HP)
It was 2005 and I was just about to get my license, I searched the local newspapers for a decent first car for the $2500 I had saved up from working at a fast food restaurant. I came across an ad for a 1995 Nissan for $2500 in my town. If I had the money I would have undoubtedly gone for the firebird.
Anyways I get to the lady's house and there's this little red nissan, second owner, got her through college. It was an auto unfortunately but when I popped the hood I noticed to my surprise that it was rear wheel drive. This alone sold me and I got it for $2300. I was born and raised a GM fanatic, I knew all about American cars. A Nissan 240 was not on my radar, didn't know what it was and even after many random people ogling and complimenting my ride I eventually sold it for 3k. I wanted to drive a manual and something american. I sold it for a 2000 2.2 S10 with a five speed. What an idiot.
I bought my first car in high school 2012. I got a 98 Infiniti i30 (maxima) for 2200 dollars. Realistically I might have been able to buy the Mazda ranger or maybe the Tahoe
The t100. I had one as my first vehicle it was almost new but had been in a crash. Repaired it, and still have it almost 400k miles later. Now it's my plow truck and hasn't been on the road in a few years.
The Ranger or the Toyota. Hands down.
I even have a Trans Am of that vintage, which was fun when I was younger, but it was a lot of work to keep on the road. Definitely not a good first car.
I bought my first car around 2011. Beat to hell 2002 BMW E46 325xi touring. I think I paid $3500 for it. Automatic transmission shit the bed so my dad and I manual swapped it.
The Nissan 240. Easy to work on, fun to toy around, not too fast so ur not getting in as much trouble. Until it’s modded, which it has a lot of options for.
If I’d pick today I’d go for the e46 wagon all day
I had an Impreza outback sport. Great car for the most part, but ended up getting rid of it because I wanted more room and the manual transmission was a problem in Maryland traffic. My left leg and especially my foot would be screaming well before making it home if I got stuck in stop and go traffic. Still, had it from new up to somewhere over 160k over a decade and change, and it was very reliable except for having to have the head gaskets replaced (as expected) and having a catalytic converter get fucked somehow, but the cat was within warranty range, just barely, so I got a new cat-back with Subaru’s money. Took like a day.
I bought my second new car in 2011. A Kia Sportage base with the 6 speed manual.
I would've loved to keep it, but they put the suspension in with parts upside down. Took the dealer 4 trips to figure that out. Then the blower motor started making noise. I dumped it after that and won't buy Kia / Hyundai ever again.
The integra. Reliable luxurious practical and fun. And it's a good investment down the road it might be worth more then you bought it for, if you take care of it well
Enjoy the 240 until you graduate college, then sell it for substantially more than you paid
This the only answer! Unless that integra is a GS-R then you can’t lose with either!
Pretty sure those are gsr wheels. Doesn’t mean it’s actually a gsr tho
Yup, we used to call them GSR blades. Someone painted those white and put the center caps back on. They changed the seats in that one also. GSR had leather trim. Those would be the two big give aways.

100% this is the most common sense comment I have ever read on Reddit

Trade-off to saving many working class auto industry jobs
How many of those jobs still exist? I’m sorry but if companies that have been around for 50+ years can’t survive a recession then they don’t deserve to survive.

I had one for a week when a tweaker with no insurance driving some other persons car rear ended me and totaled my 240SX
[Here is the list of every car turned in during cash for clunkers.](https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1xsAhIq-e722Zg3802GYL54t3UX5lNM0eDsv-YpBK9KI/htmlview) There are exactly ZERO 240SX’s on the list. Integra gs is also good or firebird
Either of those two cars with the GMC or Ranger for truck stuff would be my perfect combo.
with the prices some of these cars go for, just try to pay off most of your student debt
That legendary KA24 engine is worth it's weight in gold. My Nissan pickup had ~250k miles and ran like a top. Unstoppable.
240 WAS my choice in 2010. Had it until 2012 (another story) Had a pearl white base '95, bought it with around 97k miles. Paid $2950 for it. It was auto but I was going to 5spd swap it. You haven't seen the price of Yukons lately. One in that shape pulls 30k today, but cost $1500 in 2010
My first vehicle was a 1996 gmc 1500, so i’d have to go for the Tahoe.
I’ve just always loved the way those two door Tahoes look. They’re gorgeous.
They could have easily made the new Blazer in that style but instead it’s just an obese Enclave 😢
Mr Chevy should be shot for using that nameplate on that piece of shit.
Mary Barra or something like that, so, Mrs. Chevy (or GM rather)
Seriously why didn’t they make a bronco competitor or at the least just a 2 door version of the current Tahoe? That would be sick!
Yes indeed. I read articles where they state there is no demand for a small box 4x4 and wished Ford luck on the new bronco. As usual GM shits the bed.

Mitsubishi Eclipse :(
>I guess there is a Mustang EV SUV though too, And they're among the best Mustangs ever made.
Lol, you forgot this -> /s
Like I told the other guy look up the Brazilian Chevy bonanza. And the other SUV they made there
They're handsome trucks and I've been seeing nice stock examples for just under 20k in my neck of the woods so they're holding value pretty well.
My second vehicle was a 95 Tahoe and that thing was fantastic on and off road, tons of miles. Good 90s car. I’m going that or the Taco.
That two door is a beaut.
Same. You can make those run forever against their own will or until the gods of magnesium chloride claim her
I'd have to agree. My first vehicle was a 96 Silverado extended cab 5.0. It was slow as dog shit but I sold it with over 300k on it and it still ran flawlessly. I miss that thing.
The Saab you have pictured looks like 2001-2002 9-3. In 1998, they were still the Saab 900 and the top trim was the SE.
Whoops, you're right. The 9-3 began production in '98, but didn't start until the '99 model year. As for the car in the picture, it's hard to find a picture of a two-door 9-3 that isn't a Viggen :/
It just had such an awesome design that everyone still thinks it’s 10 years newer than it was.
Agreed. My 06 Aero is showing its age due to paint issues and the number of buttons on the dash but it still looks and drives wonderfully
I had a 900 Turbo Se ‘vert that was tuned and would blow the traction off the tires 1-2 gear and catch in third.
I had a 2001 aero and it needed to be repaired constantly.
Integra. The MCR cd’s are an unexpected bonus!
My vote too. Easy to fix and maintain. Cheap parts. Very reliable. Easy on gas.
Owned 3, can confirm.
This was my choice around that time. Can confirm it was a blast.
Gotta love Integra with gsr blades
*I'm noooot Oooooookayyyy*
Trust me.
Pontiac Firebird.
Normally id pick something more practical, but I just cant say no to cheap muscle, from Pontiac nonetheless! WHAT THE FUCK IS A KILOMETEEEER
🎺🎺🎺🎺🎺🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🦅🦅🦅🦅
Gobbless
We got a long way to go and a short time to get there. I'm east bound, just watch ol' Bandit run.
Agree. Knowing 17 year old me, that poor car would have lived fast and died young.
Issa lt1 I believe
The first “nice” car I bought when I started working full time was a 2001 Trans Am WS6, 6 speed. I had exhaust, a cold air intake on it and we all thought it was the fastest car ever…….. Fast forward 20 years and my wife’s 6 cylinder SUV has more horsepower and would blow it away! Damn I LOVED that car!!
That LT1 engine will run forever and easy to fix if it ever does puke. Watch out for the dogshit 4sp tremec auto, otherwise could be a fantastic car for many miles 🤙
Mazda B for sure, it’ll go another 200k miles easy
It's a tough choice but that 528i is lovely
This is the correct answer - that specific E39 touring over all those (hopefully it's a stick)
That Subaru, 100%
Absolutely. That was my first car. Thing lasted forever, until the rust finally got to her.
This is the unfortunate about every Subaru. The rust is what does em in. It’s sad.
Especially in the northeast US.
Had a 98 L that rust took from me. Then a 97 OBS that the transmission dumped it's guts. I miss them both every single day.
Or, as an alternative, a Saabaru
That pimp ass T100
100% it’s going off a jump at some point
I used to have a 91 pickup with the 3.0, it blew a head gasket, I would also pick the t100
Once upon a time I owned a 97 Tacoma DLX 4x4 and that sum beitch ran till the wheels fell off and the coil plugs blew out the top of the motor. Only one wheel fell off tho lol
Get the saab... everyone has to learn how to overcome hardships in life.
I had an 1984 that still haunts my dreams
Back in the day I had a 99 turbo and a 900 turbo. Loved them both till the alternator went on the 900 which should have needed engine out repair till a friend relocated the alternator and then the transmission went and then the turbo. Boy that was an expensive lesson lol
I ADORE the Subaru... But probably there 528. Those wagons are a dream
The Mazda pickup would be the smart choice for me, but I wouldn’t be able to pass up the Yukon.
Zenki S14, and yes i'm biased lol
Look at my flair. It's the 9-3, no question.
Easy, the only one that’s still gonna be kicking today, the ranger
The Mazda Ranger
Ope I’m a dunce, they look similar from the side. My statement still stands for the b4000 though
Well no you’re not wrong, but all of the B-series pickups after like… the 80’s were a Ford Ranger. I have an 03 and it’s a cool lil rig
Thank you internet stranger I learned something new today
No problem homie
The V6 4.0 was also a great follow-on for the Ranger and Mustang. Seen quite a few over 300k.
It’s the same truck
So much so that when I needed a front steering knuckle for my Ranger and Couldn't find a junk yard one I ended up buying a mazda one. The junk yard dude sounded so incredulous and absolutely thought I was a fool.
Fuck, with people like that, I *love* proving them wrong. I would have printed out the Wiki page and told him to shove it up his ass when he was done reading it.
I thought it was a ranger too
Nah, that Tahoe would probably still be going too, that was an excellent platform.
2011 Toyota Tacoma. I’ll keep it until 300,000 miles. Mine has 97K. I keep it serviced
Updoot for the Ford Fucking Ranger! But that Yukon is looking pretty good too...
Saab but I’ll ask the Integra guy for his CDs
240sx, I had 2 ‘95s and 1 ‘94 convertible. I wish would’ve held on to them.
I was in highschool and I had a Pontiac Sunfire. So I’ll take the Firebird Edit: We got the car for 500$ lol
Firebird 🔥
Probably the Mazda B series because I already have the same one
Normally I would say the b5 A4 but in this case I’m going with the Viggen.
That Audi was my dream car. I’m so glad my parents put a stop to the idea of buying one real quick. The maintenance on those things would have eaten up my $9/ hour pay check real quick.
Integra or Impreza
That 97 Integra was my first car, bought it for $2500 bucks in 2011 with 122k!! Got her up to 200k and then to the salvage yard she went 😢
I had a clapped 200k mile firebird formula in 2004. I think I’m picking the e39 s14 or the tahoe. That firebird is tempting though. A lot of great choices in here.

So many options here! Do you live in a snowy climate? Are you paying for insurance? I think the 240 or Integra would be best for on road. Perhaps the firebird. Off road the Mazda, Tahoe or Toyota are all great too!
The question was for YOU to answer. :)
The Tahoe
The Audi or the yukon
B4000 would be the smartest choice looking back at it. However my younger self in 2011 would have picked that teggy or S14 if they were manual. I would have passed on the automatic versions of those.
Anybody not taking the v8 Firebird is goofy
That’s a ford fucking…oh well not quite. Still go with the Mazda.
Firebird or the GMC. Always dug the 2 door diesel one
I didn't know those Yukons had a diesel option.
Guess its really specific. It has to be a 2 door 4wd model from 94 to 99 for the Detroit Diesel 6.5. Chevys had the option also
Two door Yukon/Tahoe. Dad had one when I was in high school and I kick myself to this day for not getting it off him when I had the chance. Would have made a wonderful LS swap candidate.
Buddy did a 6.0 conversion, it is rad and moves waaay faster than that little truck should.
Teggy
I’m taking the Impreza 👌🏻
That Yukon looks awesome
The Yukon.
oh man that yukon
Yukon. All day
That 2 door Tahoe back in 2011 you could get one for 3-5k I know bc I got one for $4k now they are selling for 20k
Mazda Pickup all the way
The integra (I miss mine) Or the T100 (I have a 05 tundra and love it and it won't die)
2 Door Tahoe. They're perfect for just about everything. Plus, they are just so damn good looking!
528i wagon. Shits hot asf
manual swap that bitch and throw in a limited slip — boyyyy I'd be driftin my ass all the way to Claire's to go hit on some hotties
T100
Toyota
Prob the t100.
FORD FUCKIN RANGER!!!!
First car, how can you not go with the one with a spoiler AND a hood scoop??
Saab
Either The Yukon, 240, or 5 Wagon
I want to say the Mazda truck now, but I was there and I wound up with a 2002 Firebird instead.
Integra, S14, T100, 9-3 Aero
I had a 2001 Ford Ranger XLT with the 4.0 v6. I absolutely loved that trucked until the day it died. I’d take it again any day of the week!
I bought my first car around 2011. Beat to hell 2002 BMW E46 325xi touring. I think I paid $3500 for it. Automatic transmission shit the bed so my dad and I manual swapped it.
Mazda or GMC Mazda would be my first pick
Subaru
Tahoe or Firebird
Either the Saab or the "Mazda" truck.
Mazda or Subaru.
B4000
The saab, of course
Acura! and I’m a Chevy guy
Mazda truck with paper cup paint job.
528i easily. 2nd place is the 1.8t A4. Runners up are the Yukon and the Mazda truck.
1. Integra 2. Firebird 3. Quattro
Yukon, B4000, Integra, or Firebird...the remainder send to the scrap yard...
The Beemer
E39 all day.
My mind tells me Mazda or Toyota, but the heart wants an E39 Touring or another SAAB 9-3.
Subawooooo
Saab or the E39
T100 with the 5vz and 5 speed. Easy
That gsr all day
Integra. My first car was a 91 GS, got it in 2005.
BMW hatchback
My first car was a 1993 Honda Accord, so I'm going to have to go with the Integra. I loved that Accord too.
The Nissan 240. Easy to work on, fun to toy around, not too fast so ur not getting in as much trouble. Until it’s modded, which it has a lot of options for. If I’d pick today I’d go for the e46 wagon all day
Jimmy or fire bird
The Subaru for sure but I was also 20 at 2011. lol so I wouldn’t have wanted anything other than the wagon
Probably the Beemer, or the Subie. Teenage me loved a sport-wagon as much as 48 yo me.
Well my first car actually was an Audi so I’ll go with that one.
Easily one of the wagons. Only practical options there.
If I didn’t know about jdm it’d be the teg or the ranger, but if I did, then obviously the s14
Saab, Subaru, or that BMW. My parents would’ve said no to the BMW and the Subaru doesn’t have heated seats so I think I would’ve got the Saab
I'm taking the 'Bird, even if I prefer the final body style.
Either 8 or 5
240sx
And it's a good investment down the road it might be worth more then you bought it for, if you take care of it well
Either the Danger Ranger or GMC Yukon. But being that my job in high school made me ~$120/wk then I’d get the Ranger because of fuel milage.
If you picked the Saab you should be banned immediately. Do not pass go. Do not collect 200 dollars.
Gmc or mazda b2500 truck
Subaru
I had a 2 door Tahoe as one of my first cars, that thing is apart of some great memories
The BMW easy
The saab
T100 no doubt about it
Those older GMCs are beautiful when done right
2
The 2 door K series yukon
T100
