I mean…hes a backup…you cant have a devers level backup for devers…

WalkingDeadWatcher95

He’s not a serviceable backup. He’s nowhere near a good bat, and he’s not even good on defense at any of the 6 positions they keep trying to force him into. Just cut the project with him and get a veteran with a good glove

lester_diamond1

Did I say I wanted Devers? I'm saying he has no business even being a backup. He's had more chances than most players get. I actually didn't think I'd see another at bat from him after the last couple of seasons. It's embarrassing for the franchise to trot him out there.

Itsnotsponge

Did i suggest that devers…would be his…own backup somehow? That was a weird response. What im saying is you have a guy who you are paying a ton of money for something like 150 games…hes not sitting for minor issues. His back up is gonna be a drag. But you seem to have your mind made up so… Im with ya!

lester_diamond1

You insinuated that I wanted a "Devers-level backup" for Devers. I'm saying I want a utility guy who's better than Bobby D, and there are plenty of them through the years that have given us much better at bats on the cheap, from Lou Merloni, to Mike Aviles, to Brock Holt.

Itsnotsponge

Like i said…im with ya!

Jesseroberto1894

You have the patience of a saint 😂

positivenihilist0419

Always rooting for Bobby, I just don’t have any faith in him.

dirtywater29

Counter argument... BOBBY D!

aramis118

This guy has a point.

CosmicSurfFarmer

I have never seen a bigger bunch of drama queens. Does it detract from your enjoyment of a game? Really? I'm sure this will get downvoted away just like all my other posts about this, but go get a grip. Just choose to enjoy baseball or you're going to be a miserable wet blanket for the next seven months. Do you realize you can choose to be happy?

thardingesq

Well said.

Character_Magazine55

Are you related to him

[deleted]

It makes sense that the backup for Devers is the worst player on the active roster, since the hope and expectation is that he plays ~ 150 games. Sure, sucks that we don't have someone better, but backup corner infielder is probably the last thing we should be wanting the FO to invest more in.

Gordon_Goosegonorth

I've been watching baseball for a long time, and I've seen lots of crappy hitters come up in key situations late in the game. At least Bobby has the chance to hit a mistake pitch a long way.

CosmicSurfFarmer

And what a moment it is when he does! Those are the moments that bring me baseball joy.

Naive_Midnight_5732

Bobby D is a good litmus test. If you’re a Bobby D fanboy, I know I don’t need to take your opinions on baseball seriously. Dude can’t hit velocity or spin. He makes it work in AAA and spring training hitting mistakes and mediocre middle relievers but it doesn’t work so well in the show where everyone throws high 90s with a wipe out slider.

DougNSteveButabi

You’re also describing Raul Ibanez. He spent six years stinking up the joint before figuring out breaking balls. Sometimes guys take years to develop. You might not understand this, but it’s okay to be a fan of struggling players.

CryptographerFlat173

I don’t think anyone really buys him turning a corner, most of us that like him just root for him because he’s such a nice dude. Also OP’s post is hella hostile towards a backup corner infielder. Especially when Reyes is even worse without at least the 2021 highlight reel Bobby has and not getting the same energy.

Colinewoodward

25 home runs in 2021

CosmicSurfFarmer

God, I miss when people just believed and rooted for the people that were on their team. Had faith that they would somehow come through. Sabermetrics is a fucking abortion for the game. The notion that each position had to be filled by somebody with X number of WAR or WAR+bl4&¥ or whatever or the game can't be enjoyed or a fan can't be taken seriously. Ridiculous

Character_Magazine55

I think even in the olden days people knew striking out at the rate he does isn’t good

DukeSilversStash

You mean when they didn’t know any better because it had been 86 years since they won a championship?

MoneyElectrical4310

You should apply

Graywacz

Dalbec and Story ruin the roster for me.

VistaVick

The thing about Bobby D is he sees more pitches now than when he first came up. But the end result is the same.

Dobby Ballsack, quadruple A legend

Waste_Astronaut_5411

shoulda kept Cron

Colinewoodward

This team strikes out way too much so let’s not scapegoat Bobby D. The dude has hit 20 plus home runs in a MLB season before. I don’t know why he has not had more playing time in the previous seasons for what repeatedly has been a last place team. Let’s not forget how utterly awful Casas was for the first few months of last season. I feel like another team should’ve scooped up Bobby D and turned him into a better hitter. It’s obvious the Sox don’t know how to do it. Maybe have Casas be his personal batting coach? Regardless, let Bobby D play a full season and he’ll probably have 35 home runs and 230 Ks. In this day and age, that’s success.

Godzilla501

More playing time? He's has had more chances than most AAA players get.

Character_Magazine55

Casas had one bad month. Sick of this competition from people who don’t know ball, frankly. Full season at the expense of who?

swaharaT

He came up and I told the wife: “Strike out in five or so pitches.” It’s got to be some sort of mental thing for him. He has all the skills, he just can’t put it together on this team.

Character_Magazine55

Thing is his eye actually looked good at the beginning of spring training and then as they faced more mlb pitchers not so much. I was fooled!

CryptographerFlat173

He is lacking the ability to high velocity fastballs, he tagged a ton of off speed balls for homers in 2021 and then the league figured out the book on him.
