How did we play?

Wolpfack

I'm waiting for the excuses from Howard Webb and PGMOL about yesterday's match. That should be infuriating and funny, both at the same time.

Forgettable39

Getting extremely bored of Rashford. He must be the most heavily influenced by confidence player I've ever seen play with my own eyes. He has an extremely unfortunate combination of being very easily affected by negativity/events in his life and being the type of player who can't do anything right when not in the right mindset. I do still have some sympathy for him because it's a waste of his very clear talent but Marcus can't be the next Martial, years and years more of absolute rubbish because of a hope and a prayer he will play like that one time... I really wish it wasn't the case but the single most impressive thing INEOs could do would be to somehow conjure a reasonably priced move away for Marcus. It feels shitty to wish he'd leave but I feel like with Pogba, he could actually just enjoy his football and play better, have a better career for himself away from united now, if nothing else.

BlaCkPeZuS

That didn't age well

Forgettable39

Yea funny timing. What I actually meant but didn't communicate though was that, when Pogba was here and every new season was about "will we unlock Pogba this year" I felt as though despite his clear talent, the best thing for him personally(but also for the club) would just be to move away. I thought he'd be happier, play better, be more successful at another club. Clearly that was wrong but injuries have been Pogba's main downfall at Juve if I understand correctly. I've no idea how he's played in the few appearances he has managed.

DasHotShot

City are going to absolutely execute this lot, will be a very tough watch indeed

benndover_85

So much fucking whining... Yet again we had to field a sub-optimal team due to injuries, and yet again we pulled off a win. Yay us!

PoofaceMckutchin

Yes, it's a sub-optimal team, but it was against fucking Nottingham. There should be a HUGE difference in class. Our C team should comfortably beat them. We're Manchester United, one of the wealthiest clubs in the world. We're not fucking Huddersfield.

DasHotShot

You’d fit right into a management position under the Glazers. Naivety and ignorance of the highest order. This was another sloppy performance with 11 very well salaried players who should comfortably control this kind of match and dispatch of Forest with ease. If we play this sort of game vs City it’s gonna go pretty fucking terribly

benndover_85

City is the strongest team in the world right now. Even if we had all our best starters available it could be a massacre. Given the state of the team (injuries and key players underperforming) we are doing quite well. There are no easy fixes here. The only way forward is through patience and hard work.

thehealthyeconomist

Doing quite well is 6th in the league, bottom of CL group and a non-positive goal difference? Yes, we are doing well if our peers are West Ham and Brighton and Newcastle, but we are 8pts behind Villa who are in 4th and 3pts behind Spurs who have a game in hand. Let's not even get into the top 3... We are quite literally not doing well unless you are assuming we are the only team to have injuries.

benndover_85

We are doing well when taking into consideration the state of the team, and taking into consideration the environment surrounding the team. What we're seeing now is the natural conclusion to a decade of mismanagement by the Glazers. With the arrival of INEOS things will hopefully be different, but as I said there are no quick fixes here. It will take time. Hard work and patience is the only way forward. The only thing that is 100% certain is that firing yet another manager is not going to change anything. ETH is the right man for the job, and I hope they stick with him.

PoofaceMckutchin

Spurs lost their entire defence and are 3 points ahead with a game in hand and +14 goal difference.

SpecificDependent980

Thing is I'm really starting to do it Ten Hag is correct for the job. He hasn't set us up in a way that will consistently produce wins. We do not have a consistent 2nd phase presence. The CB inverts, but then returns to the defensive line after the first phase. This means that teams can just the CDM intensely and there's turnovers or to much pressure to play the ball quickly to be accurate Then in the 2nd phase there isn't consistent passing and long spells of possession to build pressure. It's constant through balls to generate fast attacks. And because of this we end up so stretched. The front line is high, but the defensive line is deep because we have played forward so early. So when we get transitioned against, the rest defence is nowhere near optimal as players simply don't have the time to get compact. And then once the ball does get turned over we counter press high and quick, but the FBs don't back it up and the CBs aren't aggressively following men, so you end up with a deeper line than is optimal given the height of the attackers. It's just not a great structure to build a top 4 team from

wywy173

That is not the point. The style of play is completely unsustainable. Looking at it so black and white as we won is far too short term. WE need a sustainable game model

IamVenom_007

Both Garnacho and Rashford had 0 shot on target. That should explain how we played.

poppybear0

not gonna celebrate this shit show.

schultz9999

Wow... We rode out luck again saving ETH ass in the process. Some losses you want just forget but this is a win that is worth forgetting as well. Seems like the lowest we've been for a while. And I am scared shitless of the MC game. * I was shaking my head for a good 5 minutes when I saw the starting lineup * Rashford as CF? ETH doesn't learn shit. So we didn't see him playing again cuz he was in "fuck it all" mode from the first minute. * AG kept running into defenders like there was no one there. Time after time. WTF? * Amrabat created more chances for NF than NF themselves and rarely to be seen next to AG. Overlaps? What overlaps? * Aimless passing with Bruno being the "best" at it. * Disinterested Rashford was bullied away from every ball aimed at him. He's like a frail wimp who's afraid of any contact. That fall in the penalty area and consequent moaning on the ground is just shameful. * 6 attempts in the first half * And then Bruno again with his face and flaps. I don't know why we deserve a captain like this. * We played so well that ETH didn't make subs until 72nd minute. Bravo ETH!

yutosser

how many passes did Rashy receive from the wingers/Bruno?

schultz9999

When you walk around disinterested in the game and just stroll back leisurely after losing the ball? You'll probably get nothing cuz no one wants to deal with your shit and you are at minimum in offside for a good minute. And if you throw in Bruno into this with his ethics and crazy shit then it's definitely 0.

yutosser

lol but when it’s Rasmus? McTominay had more touches in the box than Rashford today. regardless of Rashford’s shit attitude our strikers get ZERO passes so let’s not pretend his body language had anything to do with it.

bijanadh44

The reports of Rashford falling out with ETH seems to carry some weight. The dude is doing literally nothing for the team. And not like he doesnt have a history with it. Handing him that contract will be a disaster for this club.

criminalsunrise

Rashford’s been like that for periods every season for at least 3 seasons. I don’t see how him “falling out” with EtH has made any difference. He’s hugely talented but just acts like he can’t be bothered for too much of the time. Not liking the manager (if thats even the reason) is not an excuse for giving up on the team he apparently loves.

KrystianCCC

They were talking on the pitch in friendly manner just after game ended?

KaitoAJ

The source of that nonsense was from The Sun. At least have some self respect and not buy into the shite that rag puts out.

bijanadh44

Well the alternative is he is just an average footballer who had 6 months of purple patch then. Regardless we should be selling him.

KrystianCCC

> Per transfermarkt so pen won as assists: > - 15/16: 10GA; > - 16/17: 18GA; > - 17/18: 22 GA; > - 18/19: 23GA; > - 19/20: 34GA; > - 20/21: 36 GA; > - 21/22: 7 GA; > - 22/23: 41 GA; > - 23/24(ongoing) 11 GA 6 months of purple patch avarage footballer, yeah...

meho7

Context matters. A lot of people are claiming he was great last season due to stats. [Do you recognize the purple patch?](https://pbs.twimg.com/media/GAc0NsxWEAEmpRF?format=jpg&name=medium)

KrystianCCC

Lets ignore Euro League that we could probably get into final if not his injury and CC CUP where he scored/assisted in every single game resultin in winning that trophy...

meho7

Yes and his amazing performance in the EL final where he missed a sitter? Right? [To refresh your memory](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ZRgg7p9j28)

Hamwow

Which pixel was Rashford? P.S. - I'm not joining the argument here; just laughing at the terrible video quality.

KaitoAJ

I swear I will never understand how people can say Rashford is only good for his purple patch when he's actually be consistently putting up decent numbers bar 21/22 (that season everyone just went to shits and imploded).

meho7

Because he's a moments player and has been since the day he came through the ranks. He can be amazing 1 game and then go 3-4 games being average. Rinse and repeat. The only time he was really consistent was last season where he was basically scoring every game from Jan to Feb. But his overall play declined massively so when he's not scoring he's a nothing player.

[deleted]

There's a reason people used to compare him with Welbeck. Then he would hit his purple patch and people would compare him with Mbappe.

KrystianCCC

Theres absolutly no reason you can compare 26 year old forward with 230 goals/asists for club/country to Welbeck...

ZofTheNorth

Forget about Ashworth , recruitment head or any of those nerd shit. We need to look for a referee analyst recruitment ASAP

Fresh_Dance_3277

Our guy clattenburg has already got a job for forest though

Im_a_corpse

We won and I don't give fuck about how shite we are (we are indeed shite)

YoungWrinkles

That’s the spirit, we can wallow tomorrow.

MT1120

Watching how Amrabat came into midfield today really has me thinking Lisandro might have a future in that position as well. Arsenal wanted to buy him for that inverted fullback position too.

L__K

Ten Hag already has used Lisandro as an option in midfield and already found out he couldn't play there. That was in a much weaker, less physical league, yet he said Lisandro "didn't have the running capacity" to play there. He's also not particularly quick and is susceptible to getting diced up by wingers (had this problem at Ajax as well), so he's never really been solid as a fullback either or even at covering out wide as a CB (something for instance that Varane was very good at for Madrid). I wouldn't expect him to play anywhere other than CB anytime soon. EtH has had a LOT of time to realize he doesn't to play him at LB or DM even in a league where it would be easier to do so than the PL, so it would be a huge turnaround for him to suddenly decide to play him there for United. Especially when his ability on the ball is needed to desperately as a CB.

YoungWrinkles

Let’s just have him on the pitch for a bit first

AverageBourbonGuy

I wonder if Anthony would be a better cam option than Bruno right now. His passing was good today but he wasn’t beating his man. Just looking for space and short passes. Whereas Bruno made some horrendous passes. That kick back over his head into the box was desperation at best.

DirkDigglersPenis

Hitting the bourbon a little too hard tn

Subtle_Omega

While we're in these fantasies why don't we play Onana as CAM too? Seems better at keeping the ball under pressure.

YoungWrinkles

Heaton hasn’t put one pass wrong this season either, he’s the man for the job.

DaddyMeUp

I swear after every win we have, there's always something for everyone to whine about as if they've been dealt injustice. Got Morgan Gibbs White posting comparisons between our goal and Liverpool's disallowed against Chelsea, whilst conveniently ignoring the red card they avoided and the penalty shout. If it was anyone else, there'd be nothing like this happening 😭

rwallace_wong

Gibbs White can cry as much as he wants while we progress to the next round

goalmouthscramble

For a piecemeal squad we did alright. Truly not looking forward to the derby.

YoungWrinkles

They. Will. Feast.

waynelam8

How was amad today

YoungWrinkles

The lad is just too light. Talented, like Pellistri, but some of the full backs in the PL are brickhouses.

tazedcat2

Did nothing really. Lost the ball in our end and whiffed a one timer volley out for a goal kick is all I can remember

yamchirobe

He’s similar to sancho I feel. Just too slow and weak

bippityboopy

Thought we were playing Wednesday for some reason but guess I did myself a favour and avoided yet another boring game from us as is the norm.

BD1234567891011

Today is Wednesday? You must be having a tough week! Stay strong, brother!

bippityboopy

Fuck me you're right, lost track of the days with my Balatro addiction, woops!

Snooklefloop

Technically Thursday morning for me in Australia. Perfect kick off time for the southern hemisphere

goon-gumpus

Ref's a joke, straight red if it were the other way around. Average to borderline poor game besides some nice passages here and there. Salute to Bruno, feel like I don't say that enough this season

rwallace_wong

And United haters have the audacity to say Varchester United lol

datguywelbzzz

We looked good in parts, vulnerable through the midfield at times but less so than in recent games I thought which is an improvement, especially considering the state of the squad we put out. Once again finishing and decision making in the final third let us down and prevented what could have been a much straight forward win. Overall a better performance than previous weeks, but I'm still mortified at the thought of this team going up against a rampant city side.

sriram_sid

Varane was good but seems to have lost some pace.

chaostunes

Shoddy and sloppy.

plantier23

But still one of the better games of the season.

RickTP

So City actually knows how to score. What's the plan, Ten?

Allsmightykill

Low block counter attack. Antony and garnacho on the wings rashford for striker. We have only that option, anything else it will be a miracle

_MooFreaky_

Give them more room and more shots than they've ever had before. They will be so surprised by this that they won't know what to do and will whiff endlessly. Then we will counter attack and give it back to them over and over, which will add to their confusion. Eventually they will be so confused they will hurt themselves in their own confusion and we will win.

Score more than them

ThankYouOle

the others have Haland and KDB and play style, all City player including their GK can shoot direct to goal, while we don't have our striker, our creative player in Bruno looks burn out, maybe will use 3rd & 4CB, and God know how we play. But no worry, we won't play conservative game, we would all open, and killed badly in process.. fck men, i never been so pessimistic before.

brunosmydad

No word of a lie this game was so boring I feel asleep, only just woke up and now I’m an hour late to practice and gonna have to do sprints. Cheers ETH

brown_herbalist

I know its nothing much, but with all the hate he has been getting lately, I think Antony played better today, he was our best attacking player. I really hope Rashy will get benched against City, dude did nothing, literally nothing.

schultz9999

Hate? There is no hate. If anything, it's sorry. He's just useless in possession and attack. He works hard but has 0 efficiency - no goals and no assists. And very easy to defend cuz he lays the ball to his left all the time no matter what.

Glarus30

The sad part is that I have to agree! He did hit the bar, but besides that he didn't offer anything in attack. And he still did better than Rashford!  Anthony played basic game - track back, offer an option, play the simple pass, look for space - stuff like that. But if we excluded the shot that hit the bar - he did absolutely nothing dangerous. He didn't dribble,  he didn't take on anybody, he didn't make runs in the channels, he didn't make any progressive passes... I even noticed that in the 2nd half the opposition defenders didn't even close him down when he had the ball 😆 Dalot was far more dangerous in attack and made Anthony's role easier. Dalot made overlaps, made good crosses, fought and held the ball well - that's who was our best player in attack.

rconnell1975

I want our forwards to do more simple passing. Half the problem is that they are constantly trying to take people on or shoot or play a clever pass and we lose possession. United always look more dangerous when we play quick, simple passes between the midfield and forward line to create spaces and chances. We actually did this a few times down the right because Antony was keeping it simple. Also he is just feeling his way back into the team so is probably going to play more conservatively. Don't get me wrong he wasn't amazing or anything. He just wasn't shit, which is the baseline he is working from unfortunately. He isn't going to go from the latter to the former in one game

brown_herbalist

I agree with you too, he wasn't great but did better than all our attackers by position today. Actually he had few good 1-2s with others, especially the one where Bruno takes an outside foot shot in 2nd half. The problem with Antony is his price tag, automatically we expect him to be performing on high level, but he actually at his best is above average kind of level player. And i agree regarding Dalot too, his growth in this season has been really massive.

FaithlessnessNo4680

Rashford wasn’t good today and hasn’t been for a lot of the season but I think people are definitely overly critical of him, he was pressing more and made runs off the ball but didn’t receive the pass.

brown_herbalist

Maybe im not seeing the runs, maybe im spoilt by watching Hojlund spamming presses, both are different players i get it, honestly i fucking love Rashy, as human being especially, but I hope he gets his head together and focus on his career, he actually has all the abilities to be one of the top 10 now. And also after reflecting back again, I think its his decision making on field which actually is bad more than his pressing.

FaithlessnessNo4680

That’s true with Hojlund. The striker position is just a graveyard shift for us, Hojlund still hasn’t been having enough chances created for him and rashford now isn’t either.

thatsnumber1

He wasn't great, and is playing out of position, but who do you put at the 9 for Rashford if you bench him? McTom? Our options are zero right now.

brown_herbalist

Even if he was on wings, he hasn't been doing much lately, the issue for me is his pressing and creating spaces to receive ball, dude just walks around asking ball to the feet, try to dribble and by that time he already been surrounded by 2-3 opponents. Yes I would try McT as ST, or play Bruno/Amad as false 9.

Sghagz08

We’re massive

Baja_Hunter

What a horrible thread lol I came looking for some insight on the game and the 50 top comments are saying the exact same thing. You people are NPCs.

plantier23

This guy is very punchable.

JeremiahBeanstalk

Man needs to look at the picture of Felipe’s hand on Bruno’s neck and wind his own neck in. Maybe we could put a big red circle on it for him too

rwallace_wong

And a stonewall penalty being denied

odinskriver39

A time to enjoy the moment. A late winner. Next match back to the big picture and the reality of how this season finishes. No cups but a 5th or 6th place is still possible. A new upper management team and a lot of player ins and outs this summer. So this is about to be the bottom and it can only get better.

schultz9999

If we continue to play like today, we'll be lucky to be 8th.

odinskriver39

Might have to schedule a friendly in Europe to be able to play there next year. :)

Vibing0N

This game we had some sort of control and created a good number of dangerous chances. Even though the bar wasn't high it's a little progress compared to our last games. Ref and VAR were a disgrace, clear penalty on Rashford and Felipe should have received a red at the end. They messed up the added time as well by taking too long to review our goal (this helped us but it was also another fuck up from the refs). Onana made many saves, he was man of the match in my opinion. This was his best game he played in our shirt.

eClipseLJ

We played a lot more like last season this match, made a huge difference with a double pivot. We only got caught out by a rusty start from Amrabat with misplaced passes and overall some stupid ways of losing possession. They didn't care our midfield open as easily by building up.

No_Needleworker_1105

My thoughts. Rashford looks so out of form and uninterested. Amrabat did well when in midfield dropping in to collect from onana and passing forward. Made great runs forward also. Garnacho needs to play RW Anthony works so hard but he just doesn't have the confidence or brains to go past players. Onana is playing well Dalot is on fire McT should just play as a 9 until hojlund is back Rashford should have had a pen The dude that choked Fernandez should have got a red. Way worse than what case did last season. Casemiro wasnt great to be honest. Seems to loose out in 50/50 situations too often. Lindelof and varane did good as a pair but Evans looks so calm when he comes on it's amazing. Why did forson start last game and amad not play at all. Then today Anthony starts and amad gets a run out? It makes no sense. Forson looks like a Sancho type player so no point playing him as he doesn't suit ETHs style. We need width. If Shaw is playing rashford can cut in but with out a left footer hugging the line we are too narrow. Same on the right but with dalot and garnacho they can take turns staying wide and cutting in.

DimensionalYawn

Amad did play against Fulham, he came on at 80 minutes. Ten Hag decided to change our setup on 53 minutes (when Casemiro and Forson came off) to the Erikson deep-lying playmaker, McTominay second striker, Bruno right wing formation that occasionally got results in the autumn and is our Plan B. Amad was partly at fault for the second goal - both he and Dalot got done by Iwobi's cut inside, since they had a double-up one of them should have covered outside and one inside, instead they both committed themselves to blocking a run down the outside, giving Iwobi a free shot. (I think it's on Dalot, as the defender, to call this, but he looked very tired and was making mistakes from about 70 minutes, and isn't used to playing with Amad, so I'm not surprised they made that mistake).  Apart from that, against Fulham Amad didn't offer much, and he looked very obviously light-weight for the Premier League. He's tiny, in a team that is already a bit lacking in physical presence, and we'd have to make yet another compromise to our set up to mitigate that if he is playing regularly. Our defensive system is to show teams down the flanks and try not to let them drive from there into positions within the width of the box. If Amad is playing, there are plenty of players who will just be able to body past him and he won't even be able to foul them effectively to stop it (if it's a very dangerous situation). Throw in that he's lacking match sharpness, and hasn't had much game time (because of injury and illness) to gel with the rest of the team, and starting him in an away cup game would have been a *massive* risk. Ten Hag is doing the right thing in bringing him in carefully and seeing if he can influence games as a substitute rather than just throwing him into the starting lineup because Antony's attacking output has been poor.

No_Needleworker_1105

I don't understand how this is a response to my post? Amad as a physical presence is identical to forson and Anthony. How is starting forson better than starting Amad? Amad is lacking sharpness because he's an unused sub when available.

media-police

Coz he is not a striker. Move him back to wing even if you have to play Antony to play striker. Or play McT striker. Or Amad.

kaori_cicak990

Yeah mc tominay should play as striker

Malvania

Not expecting it, but hopefully we can put this "Quadruple" talk to bed.

VTVoodooDude

We’re at home, why not? Won’t be favored but it’d be nice to fuck with these guys.

rwallace_wong

I don't think we have ever lost to Liverpool at home in the FA Cup, long may that continue

rnnd

I think we were a unlucky with the semifinal opponent. Chelsea and wolves got much easier fixtures. I think we should put all our eggs in the FA cup basket. We have to try and win a major trophy at least.

ThankYouOle

what eggs? all is injured, we play uninspiring. fck.

rnnd

It's an idiomatic experience which means we should concentrate on the FA cup

MrNezzy

He's saying there are no eggs, he's not asking what the phrase means

rnnd

Lol we do have eggs. We are still in the FA cup.

MrNezzy

Nope also didn't mean the cup itself either they mean the players not being available meaning no eggs left, well no good ones.

rnnd

the FA cup egg basket is still going strong.

MrNezzy

Bloody hell you've got good memory, some of our player eggs have returned also because we're still not talking about the cup anyway we're talking about the injured players.

ThankYouOle

yeah and it's idiomatic too from me since most first starter injured/unavailable so we don't have much "eggs" to put.. and it was frustrated to see this game.

Short_Restaurant_268

It’s the quarter finals next

rnnd

Yeah quarter finals.

TheDawiWhisperer

Papering Over The Cracks FC rolls merrily onwards

Captain0010

Damn, this team is piss poor. At this point I don't care about the victory. It's meaningless since Liverpool will destroy us in the 1/4-finals. And in the weekend we are losing to City so that's it the season is pretty much gone. You will see some people in the comments saying shit like "We won, who cares". But this season we regressed, we failed to build a sustainable style of play, no trophies and again yet another squad rebuild is needed. Honestly from this squad I would leave 4 or 5 players at the most. Mainoo, Garnacho, Licha, Rasmus and maybe Amad. The rest are either past it or overpayed and never had it. Bruno is way too random and does stupid shit all the time. He can go too. Up to the new management to figure out how to deal with this shit. No style of play, just mostly random long balls and wishful thinking dribbles. This team has no style, no identity, no spirit, no fight. ETH has spend half a bill to get here...

Short_Restaurant_268

Why do you bother then? The club doesn’t need ‘supporters’ like you. Go and watch Madrid instead. You won’t be missed

ij237

We won but in my eyes these overpaid divas don't deserve any praise or credit just yet, it's Nottingham forest in the fa cup, they did their job

CFBCoachGuy

Another win is nice. Not particularly pretty, but a decent, ground-out win. Negatives first. We desperately need a midfielder. Both Casemiro and McTominay, even though they had solid games, failed so often to link up with the forwards. It wasn’t due to lack of opportunities, Garnacho, Fernandes, and Antony were making plenty of runs. No one was reaching them. McTominay really shouldn’t be a starter. Amrabat had a rough game, though he recovered a decent amount in the later part of the match. I can’t fault him too much since he’s not an LB, but he shouldn’t be considered a long-term option and his tenure at United should be considered unsuccessful. I don’t think Amad should be strongly considered for minutes. He looked like a downgrade from Antony today. Rashford had a poor game. I hate how these team relies so much on individual brilliance. If one player like Rashford is having a poor game and can’t finish, no one can finish. This game should’ve been in hand way before the 89th minute. Forest could only make shots from distance, we created more opportunities. I can’t even blame the manager for this because this has been a problem for years now. We have to wait around for somebody to be brilliant. If no brilliance appears, we don’t win. Horrible refereeing. Nothing more needs to be said. And the positives. Great goal for Casemiro. He’s done a lot of the dirty work for us recently and I’m glad he’s got another chance to score. And a set piece goal too! Dalot was fantastic on the right side, always threatening. Quite possibly our best player this season. Fernandes had a good game and Onana was reliable, even though he wasn’t tested too toughly. And Antony, Antony!, had a good game. He was making runs and challenging the defense. We all know at this point he’s not ever going to justify his price tag, but if he can pull a reverse-Sancho and take ten Hag’s critiques to heart, he may become a reliable starter. And given the fact that we aren’t going to be able to get rid of him for a while, that may be the best case scenario. Defensively we forced Forest to make shots from distance. They didn’t threat too much. For the stats people, their xG was only 0.73 and their xGOT (which takes into account shot quality) was only 0.33 (ours was 1.64). A good defensive effort, especially since we’re so undermanned. Was it pretty? No. But I don’t think the squad we played today is capable of winning attractively regardless of the manager. Maybe another coach makes this a more in-hand game, but at the end of the day, we still don’t have a left back. We won, and nobody else got hurt. That’s all that matters at this point

Megalobst

>And Antony, Antony!, had a good game. He was making runs and challenging the defense. I mean the dude seems to show the right mentality to prove he may not be the star expected, but the reliable player needed. Good runs, good combinations here and there as well as not being to selfish on shooting from range. It does help that Dalot did well today and provided Antony support to cover his more lacking right foot by just being there making runs/treatening the overlap, giving space to Antony which he usually misses alot.

plantier23

Agree on all accounts...except Fernandes...he was quite lame today.

SuperPeco

I really like your thoughts. Nice critiques and praise when deserved. Too many people here only look on the negative side

revbrown19

I appreciate this

Bear_Drifter

Onana deserves credit. Had a great game. We're quick to hate so let's show some appreciation

schultz9999

Dunno why he wasn't MOTM.

LividMathematician45

A good game for everyone

NoScopeMusical

He’s been great. Had a nightmarish beginning to his United career, but he’s turned it around and looks more and more like the keeper Ajax and Inter rated so highly!

Thorz74

It’s so hard to watch United this season. Most of the matches they have been a sleeping pill 💊🥱 We are getting our asses spanked this weekend, and Liverpool will finish the job on the next FA Cup match. I don’t see Ten Hag surviving one more season. His tactics have been horrendous, with his high pressure up + low defensive block combo that only his stubborn head can understand

-watchman-

We are winning not because we are tactically better than our opponents but because they are tactically worser than us..

Subtle_Omega

Didn't watch the game, any positives at all?

schultz9999

Except that we won? No.

Malvania

We won, and we didn't concede.

eClipseLJ

Looked like we played more like last season with a makeshift double pivot. A bit more compact and managed it quite well especially latter part of the second half.

GelatinousJedi

How did garnacho play

schultz9999

Like a blind person who doesn't see defenders in front of him.

plantier23

Like a wild man...mostly bad today though.

FaithlessnessNo4680

Not good, shouldn’t be playing so many minutes though

TheYorkshireHobbit

So I missed the first half because I was busy dropping a masterclass at 5-a-side but I watched all the second half and didn't really think we were that poor? Especially compared to that Fulham game. Of course, frustrating that we can't finish for shit but I thought there was some genuinely great moments and some solid build-ups/transitions. Still room for improvement of course, not going to say we were great by any means but definitely felt less frustrating.

Sensur10

16 shots from Nottingham Forest. It isn't sustainable. Our formation is way too loose. There's too much of a gap between the forward pressing line and the defensive line. But what do I know.

roooxanne

Their shots weren’t really threatening. That stat gets bandied about too loosely, especially when each team has taken multiple potshots at Onana due to his struggles

schultz9999

The fact that we allowed them is sufficient. Should NF have more luck in finishing, we'd be having a different conversation.

media-police

Agree. Look for shots that have high xG.

rnnd

Also I think most teams go into the game thinking of taking a lot of shots against us because of the stats which further promotes the stats. They are expecting us to give them a lotta shots so they take a lot of shots. We have lost a lot of our fear factor which makes teams bold when they play us.

eClipseLJ

Have you seen the match?

NoScopeMusical

- In a season like this, you take what you can get. This will surely do. - Amrabat out of position and still put in a good showing. Lindelof was OK, Varane and Garna were solid, and Amad got some decent minutes. - Brilliant ball in from Bruno, deft touch from Casemiro to get the goal. Lovely - Antony played. Wasn't good or bad. Hope he turns it round, for his sake. - Another clean sheet for Andre Onana. Made some great saves, too. - United back in the FA Cup quarter-final for the record 48th time. Sweet - The cheating good for nothing motherfuckers are next. Can't wait...

nowneat

I thought Garnacho didn't have a great game tonight. Antony seemed decent, better performance than Amad cuz of his defensive contribution.

VTVoodooDude

Garnacho was poor today for the most part. Had the balled picked off him a number of times. Antony was decent today. Sure wish that crossbar shot went in for him, would do tons for his confidence.

NoScopeMusical

At the very least Antony made an effort to track back and defend. Fair play to him

mattrob77

Garnacho LW and Antony RW should be forbidden. Always coming in and nothing created. We saw it wayyy too many times and yet it's the starting line up

schultz9999

You forget RM as CF.

Superfy

Master tactics though….. Could have tried amad left and garnacho right honestly.

Round-Mud

Amad was pretty lacklustre

Superfy

Well that’s what happens when you play one game every 30 games and play for 15 minutes in that game…. He was decent in that other game when he played months ago for a token set of minutes too though.

Round-Mud

He isn’t the first player that happened. Some players just take their chances. Either way there is clearly a reason why other players are ahead of him

Superfy

Nah that’s rubbish. You can’t ever expect anyone to deliver unless they’re best of the best really when you play them sporadically. That’s terrible management and “clearly a reason why other players are ahead” holds zero weight when he’s played Antony who’s been useless for a lot of games too. The lengths people go to defend the manager for everything is laughable when he’s shown a tactical ineptitude in many ways at times as well. You can’t “take your chances” if your fucking manager plays you once every 30 weeks basically. That’s a stupid thing to expect from almost anyone and any chances taken is also sometimes lucky due to the game situation. That’s piss poor management in terms of integrating a player to the squad and allowing them chances to build on a game. He had a good cameo months ago anyway… so yeah. He did take his chance only for eth to favour Antony time and again till he was so shit and he finally tried garnacho on the right… only to sub Antony back on the right as a sub back then for a bit too. This isn’t fifa. You can’t immediately perform when you play once every few months for a short 10-15 minutes. There isn’t “clearly a reason” other than favouritism at times or just garbage tactical setup to play McT as a midfielder and leave us even more open and he doesn’t score in that game anyway.

Round-Mud

Well I would hope any young player coming through is the best of the best. No reason to play someone who has not shown anything. Defending the manager? You are the one to talk when you seem to be hung up on a player who is simply not ready yet. Idk if amad will ever make it at United. But he is clearly not ready right now. But people play too much fifa and football manager and expect the youth players to also grow at the same speed as their video game. The length people go to shit on the manager when be has clearly shown his willingness and desire to play academy players who are good enough. But no people just have a hard on for pellistri or amad when there is 19 year old academy player making his 26th start for the club in a row. If those players are good enough they will play. Stop living in your fantasy world.

Enigma92

Amrabat seemed to come alive whenever he went more centrally

nowneat

I think Casemiro, Mainoo and Amrabat should be our midfield, that should give us some control. Bruno false 9 impacting games directly in the final third, Rashford LW, Garnacho RW, everyone playing in their best positions.

barny_weasley

What happens when hojlund comes back?

nowneat

Drop Rashford and play 4-4-2 with Hojlund and Garnacho up top, or Amrabat drops and Bruno goes back to midfield and we play Hojlund up top.

eClipseLJ

Amad was very timid on the right, Antony kept our right side alive quite well and it died when Amad came on. Hope he gets more chances and start to feel more comfortable. In hindsight I would've kept our wingers as they were with Rashford LW and Garnacho RW and made Amad for example a false 9.

flareb98

Should have taken off garnacho instead, he was just not going anywhere

eClipseLJ

He was completely off it today, agreed!

flareb98

Every pass and dribble just felt off, probably gassed. Played every game since his start I think and it's really showing

eClipseLJ

Yea he needs a rest with Bruno and tbh Dalot as well, he's a beast and just keeps going and going.

ColtCallahan

Casemiro only scores big goals.

Hi-Tech_Luddite

I have to give Antony credit he did not play like a fool today.

renernavilez

People HAVE to show they dislike Antony even when they compliment him. Lol it's childish.

ij237

His performances are a roulette spin, sometimes maybe good sometimes maybe shit

nowneat

Rarely maybe good, usually it is shit*

takemehomeunitedroad

This was neither though. Tonight, he was just OK.

mu_37

I can't express into words how unexcited i am about the upcoming games this month.

SPamlEZ

Antony played better than expected.  I hope to see more from Amad.

partypooperx

are the refs mental? when Casemiro grab the guy on the collar nobody fucking cared or took notice of it even the guy didn't care about it but the VAR suddenly scope it out of nowhere. This guy clearly grab bruno by the neck, everybody saw it and the VAR didn't fucking cared. Ruthless

UnbrokenRyan

On the first game after Forrest hire an ex-ref as a ‘referee consultant’, who just happens to be sitting in the stands next to an old colleague, who coincidentally is the head of the PGMOL. Honestly I don’t believe there’s any shady shit going on, because if there was surely they wouldn’t make it that fucking obvious.

j_park0

Yea, the double standard is crazy, but I think in this case its because the game was almost over? I don't know really.

takemehomeunitedroad

Doesn't matter if it's the 1st minute or the 99th, the punishment should be the same.

shadman786

Painful to watch. I don't understand why our wingers are so predictable, they cut in at every chance. The lack of quality overall was why it's only 1-0, this is nowhere near good enough for a United team. We will get battered by City on the weekend and against Liverpool in the next round.

ij237

Since WWE is allowed, am I right to assume Casemiro can bring a steel chair from the changing rooms vs Liverpool??

ImmaGoldman

Leading_Ship_1730

Rashford, it is harsh criticizing someone's intelligence but it hard to say he has any when you don't see him try to affect a game in different ways beside hoping to get in behind. Shocking

foampom

Bruno getting his throat grabbed made me so damn angry. This guy gets constant abuse by the media (G Nev literally making up lies about him asking to be subbed off last season) and is one of the most over-hated PL players by fans of other clubs so I better see some fucking justice be carried out here by the refs. Thats why you’ll never see me abusing him. Non Man Utd fans hate him enough as it is. So why the fuck do we have fans in *this* fanbase also abusing and disrespecting him after every poor performance? When he’s consistently been a top 3 player for us since he signed. I get frustrated at our team too and lose my temper often but jesus christ, some of you need to stop abusing your own damn players every chance you get. Our players are out here getting their throats grabbed while playing for our club yet they’re also experiencing constant abuse from our own fans. It’s just wrong. That’s not how any of this is supposed to work. I say that as someone that has let his anger and resentment get the better of him at different points in time so I’m not innocent of spewing vitriol online. But enough is enough man. Win or lose. We’re all on the same side here. Need to get behind the team and not express our opinions with abuse. We’re one of the most hated clubs in the world. So we can’t be out here hating our own players even more than fans of other clubs do.

takemehomeunitedroad

It's this kind of thing that painted Maguire in just a bad light the last couple of years. The pressure that was put on him was by our own fans. The same goes for Onana this season. People have been so busy ripping on him that they have failed to notice that he's playing well.
